The best alternative to Ring depends on the smart-home platform you already use. For Apple Home and HomeKit Secure Video, the documented choice is the Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4. If you want an Apple Home option built around a hub, eufy’s Video Doorbell S4 works through HomeBase S380. For Alexa or Google Home, Aqara G4 and eufy E340 are plausible options, but their supported actions and accessory requirements differ. Check the exact model—not only the brand—against the platform directory, then verify wiring, chime, hub, camera-coverage and storage requirements before ordering.

Quick platform-first recommendations

“Works with” can mean a live view on a smart display, spoken announcements, two-way talk, recorded-video access, or automation triggers. Those are different capabilities. Use this shortlist as a starting point, then confirm the exact function you need in the manufacturer’s current documentation.

Alexa or Google Home Aqara G4 or eufy E340 For G4, Aqara requires a compatible smart speaker for Google Home or Amazon Alexa features. E340 lists Alexa and Google Voice Assistant devices among its supported pairings.

How to verify compatibility before buying

A platform badge on a retailer page is not enough. Model names, regional firmware and required hubs can change the result. Apple’s Home accessories directory is the authoritative first check for Apple Home devices; it lists the product name and the supported HomeKit Secure Video designation. The directory currently lists “Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4” and labels it “Supports HomeKit Secure Video.” Check the listing at Apple’s Home accessories directory.

  1. Write down the exact model. Record the full product name, generation and any included or required base station. A brand’s other doorbells may support a different set of platforms.
  2. Check the platform’s own directory. For Apple Home, search the exact model in Apple’s directory. For Alexa or Google Home, open the manufacturer’s current compatibility page and look for the specific device and supported actions.
  3. Define the action you need. Decide whether you need a notification, live video on a display, two-way talk, a doorbell chime, an automation trigger, cloud recording or local recording. Confirm each action separately.
  4. List every accessory in the signal path. A smart speaker, indoor chime or hub may be mandatory rather than optional. Note the required model number and whether it is sold separately.
  5. Check your installation. Determine whether you have existing doorbell wiring, an indoor mechanical chime, a suitable Wi-Fi signal and a practical place to recharge or replace a battery.
  6. Recheck regional and software conditions. Before checkout, confirm availability in your country, supported firmware, current app behavior and any account or subscription requirement. Features can change after a product page is published.

Best option for Apple Home and HomeKit Secure Video: Aqara G4

The Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4 is the clearest Ring alternative for an Apple-first home because Apple’s accessories directory explicitly lists it as supporting HomeKit Secure Video. That is stronger evidence than a generic “works with Apple” statement: it identifies the exact model and the secure-video feature.

Aqara’s product documentation describes Apple Home functions including iCloud video storage, on-device AI detection, HomePod notifications and streaming to Apple TV. It also describes an on-device facial-recognition feature that can be used for automations. Those capabilities are part of Aqara’s documented feature set; confirm the current iCloud, device and regional requirements in the product documentation at Aqara’s G4 product page.

What the G4 is a good fit for

  • Households that want the doorbell visible in the Apple Home app.
  • Homes already using HomePod notifications or Apple TV for viewing.
  • Owners who want HomeKit Secure Video rather than relying solely on a doorbell maker’s app.
  • Automations based on the doorbell’s documented on-device recognition capability.

Important G4 caveats

Aqara states that cloud storage is separate, so the doorbell should not be described as including unlimited or no-cost cloud recording. Check the current iCloud plan and feature requirements before assuming that every HomeKit Secure Video function is available on your account.

The G4 can also stream and provide two-way talk through Alexa and Google Home, but Aqara explicitly says a compatible smart speaker is required to support those platforms. A phone-only setup should not be assumed to provide smart-display or voice-assistant behavior. The requirement is documented on the same Aqara G4 page.

Apple Home alternative with a hub: eufy Video Doorbell S4

eufy positions the Video Doorbell S4 as an Apple Home alternative only when it is used through HomeBase S380. The pairing condition matters: buying the doorbell without the specified base does not establish the documented HomeKit path. eufy’s HomeKit guidance explains this requirement at its HomeKit video-doorbell guide.

When the S4 route makes sense

  • You are willing to run a dedicated HomeBase S380 as part of the system.
  • You prefer a hub-based architecture and can place the base where it has reliable network connectivity.
  • You have confirmed that the exact S4 and S380 combination, firmware and region still support the Apple Home functions you need.

What to confirm before ordering

Verify that the listing includes the correct doorbell model and that HomeBase S380 is included or available to buy. Confirm whether the specific Apple Home action you want—live view, notifications, two-way talk, recording or automations—is supported through the base. eufy’s documentation establishes compatibility through S380, but it does not by itself provide a current, like-for-like table of storage fees, retention periods or response times against other models.

Best alternatives for Alexa or Google Home

Aqara G4 for smart-speaker and display use

Aqara says the G4 supports streaming and two-way talk on Alexa and Google Home, provided that a compatible smart speaker is present. This makes it a candidate for homes where a voice assistant or smart display is the main way to answer the door. The smart-speaker requirement is not a minor setup note: without compatible hardware, the advertised ecosystem features may not be available.

Use the G4 when you also value Apple Home support, because its platform documentation covers both HomeKit Secure Video and Alexa/Google behavior. Confirm the exact display, speaker and account combination before purchase; “Alexa compatible” or “Google compatible” does not identify which devices can show video or carry two-way audio.

eufy E340 for Alexa or Google device pairings

eufy’s E340 product page lists an existing mechanical chime, HomeBase S280 or S380, Minibase Chime T8023, Alexa devices and Google Voice Assistant devices among its compatible pairings. That gives it a practical role in homes that already have one of those accessories or assistants. The exact accessory and function should be checked on the E340 product page.

eufy’s own HomeKit guide describes E340 as a non-HomeKit alternative. Do not select E340 expecting it to appear in Apple Home merely because another eufy doorbell has a HomeKit route. For an Apple installation, consider the G4 or the S4 with HomeBase S380 instead.

E340 power detail that is easy to miss

The E340 page says the battery must remain installed even when the doorbell is wired. Wired power therefore does not mean you can remove the battery from the system. Plan for charging or replacement and confirm the wiring requirements for your installation.

Choosing among the models by real-world requirement

Apple Home integration

Choose G4 when you want a directly documented HomeKit Secure Video model. Choose S4 only when HomeBase S380 is part of the plan and you have confirmed the current combination’s behavior. Treat E340 as a non-HomeKit choice according to eufy’s own guide.

Alexa or Google display and voice features

G4 documentation covers streaming and two-way talk with a compatible smart speaker. E340 documentation lists Alexa and Google Voice Assistant devices among its pairings. Compare the particular display or speaker model, not just the assistant’s name, and verify whether you need a live view, announcement, two-way conversation or all three.

Wired versus battery installation

Start by checking whether your existing transformer and wiring meet the doorbell’s requirements. If you choose E340, remember that its battery remains necessary in wired mode. For any battery-powered installation, identify the charging interval and whether removing the unit affects your security coverage; the reviewed documentation does not establish a universal battery-runtime figure for these models.

Chime, speaker and hub dependencies

An indoor mechanical chime, a manufacturer chime, a smart speaker and a hub are different pieces of equipment. E340 lists compatibility with an existing mechanical chime, HomeBase S280/S380 and Minibase Chime T8023. G4 requires a compatible smart speaker for its Alexa and Google support. S4’s Apple Home route requires HomeBase S380. Put these dependencies on your shopping list before comparing doorbell prices.

Camera coverage and package visibility

Measure the area you need to see: a visitor’s face, the step, packages below the camera and the approach from either side. Compare each model’s published field of view and aspect ratio, and check whether your mounting position leaves a blind spot. The supplied product information does not provide a common, independently tested coverage table for G4, E340 and S4, so do not infer that one has better package visibility without checking the exact specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage, retention and privacy

Separate three questions: where clips are stored, how long they are retained and what fee or account is required. Aqara notes that cloud storage is separate for G4. S4’s HomeKit compatibility depends on HomeBase S380, while E340’s page identifies compatible bases and chimes. The available documentation does not establish a complete, current comparison of storage fees, retention windows or local-versus-cloud behavior across all three models. Verify those terms for your region before purchase.

Notifications and app expectations

Decide whether you want alerts in Apple Home, the manufacturer’s app, an Alexa or Google interface, or more than one. Test the notification path you care about during setup: a platform may support a live stream but not every automation, or a voice announcement but not recorded-video browsing. Keep the manufacturer app installed if it is required for firmware, account setup or settings management.

Installation planning checklist

  • Door position: Mark the camera’s intended height and angle, then check the view of faces, packages and the walkway.
  • Power: Identify wiring, transformer ratings and battery access. For E340, retain the battery even with wired power.
  • Network: Check Wi-Fi signal at the mounting point and place any hub or base where it can remain connected.
  • Indoor alert: Decide whether an existing mechanical chime, Minibase Chime T8023, smart speaker or another accessory will provide the indoor notification.
  • Platform account: Sign in to the intended Apple, Alexa or Google account and confirm that the doorbell model is supported in your region.
  • Storage: Choose the recording destination and verify any iCloud, manufacturer-account or hub requirement before relying on recorded clips.
  • Privacy: Set activity zones and notification behavior so the camera covers your property without unnecessarily monitoring neighboring spaces.

Troubleshooting common selection mistakes

The doorbell does not appear in Apple Home

Confirm that you bought the exact model listed by Apple, not another doorbell from the same brand. If it is S4, verify that HomeBase S380 is connected and that the current firmware and region support the Apple Home path. E340 should not be expected to appear in HomeKit based on eufy’s guide.

Alexa or Google shows alerts but no video

Check whether your model supports the particular action you want and whether the required smart speaker or display is compatible. Aqara specifically requires a compatible smart speaker for G4’s Alexa and Google support. Recheck account linking, device permissions and the manufacturer’s current setup instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The indoor chime is silent

Identify which chime path you selected. E340’s documented options include an existing mechanical chime, HomeBase S280/S380 and Minibase Chime T8023, but each has its own wiring or pairing requirements. A smart speaker announcement is not automatically equivalent to a wired chime.

Battery planning was overlooked

Wired installation does not always eliminate battery maintenance. E340’s product page explicitly says the battery must remain installed in wired mode. For any model, confirm how the battery is accessed and how the doorbell behaves while it is being charged.

Cloud recording assumptions are wrong

Do not assume that platform compatibility includes recording at no extra cost. Aqara identifies cloud storage as separate for G4. For every model, read the current storage, retention and account terms for your country and decide whether local storage, a hub or a paid plan is acceptable.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Apple-first household: Check Aqara G4 in Apple’s directory. If you prefer the S4 design, budget for HomeBase S380 and verify the combined setup.
  2. Alexa/Google-first household: Compare G4 and E340 based on the exact smart speaker, display and chime you own. Confirm two-way talk and live-view behavior separately.
  3. Existing eufy accessories: E340 may fit if you already use a compatible mechanical chime, HomeBase S280/S380 or Minibase Chime T8023. Do not treat that accessory compatibility as Apple Home support.
  4. Mixed or changing ecosystem: Pick the platform action that must work today, then verify whether the doorbell can also deliver the secondary actions you may want later.
  5. Subscription-sensitive buyer: Compare storage destination, retention and recurring fees as a separate decision. The available product pages do not establish a complete fee table, so confirm current terms before checkout.

What is not established by the available documentation

There is no reliable, like-for-like evidence here for a universal winner in image quality, detection accuracy, latency, battery runtime, storage cost, retention length or long-term reliability. No hands-on test was conducted for this comparison. Those factors can vary with wiring, Wi-Fi, firmware, region and account configuration. Use the platform and accessory facts above to narrow the field, then verify the current technical specifications and terms for the exact package you intend to install.
