The best VESA monitor arm is one that fits your monitor’s mounting pattern and weight, and can attach safely to your desk. Screen size alone is not enough to choose one: check the VESA hole spacing, the monitor’s weight without its stand, the arm’s full supported weight range, and the desk attachment before buying.
How to choose a VESA monitor arm that fits
Confirm the VESA pattern
Measure the distance between the centers of the mounting holes, horizontally and vertically. A common pattern is 100 × 100 mm; smaller displays may use 75 × 75 mm. For example, Ergotron’s LX specification sheet lists both 75 × 75 mm and 100 × 100 mm VESA FDMI MIS-D patterns. Check the monitor manual or manufacturer specifications rather than assuming that a screen of a particular diagonal uses a particular pattern. If the monitor has no mounting holes, a model-specific VESA adapter may be an option; confirm that it fits your display before purchasing.
Weigh the monitor without its stand
Compare the monitor’s weight after removing its original stand with the arm’s minimum and maximum supported weights. A maximum rating alone is not enough: a screen that is too light for an arm’s range may not stay positioned properly. Also check any restrictions for thick or curved displays. Ergotron’s HX single-monitor sheet lists 20–42 lb, but says displays deeper than 6 inches reduce the maximum capacity to 28 lb; curved-screen arc depth also matters. These figures are product specifications, not a guarantee that every display of the same weight and shape will fit.

Desk thickness, underside clearance, and material determine whether a clamp can be installed safely. A desk with a suitable grommet hole may allow a grommet attachment instead. Check the arm’s clamp range and the desk maker’s mounting guidance, especially for glass or other surfaces that may be damaged by clamping. Ergotron’s LX documentation lists several desk attachment options, but the exact options depend on the configuration and SKU.

Match the arm to your layout
Choose a single arm for one screen, a heavy-display arm only when its weight and depth limits suit the monitor, and a dual or stacked mount when the number and orientation of screens require it. Multi-screen versions have their own per-display limits; do not apply a single-arm rating to a dual or stacked configuration. Compare lift and extension with your desk depth and preferred viewing position, and check the exact model’s movement range.
Recommended option for a typical single monitor
Ergotron LX Desk Monitor Arm
The LX is a plausible candidate for an ordinary single-monitor setup when the display meets its weight and VESA requirements. Ergotron’s specification sheet dated December 15, 2020 lists a 7–25 lb capacity, 75 × 75 mm and 100 × 100 mm VESA fit, 13 inches of lift, up to 25 inches of extension, 360-degree pan and rotation, and a 10-year warranty. The sheet describes its screen-size guidance as approximate: a larger monitor may still fit if it stays within the supported weight, but fit and movement must be confirmed for the specific display.

Heavy displays
For a heavier monitor, check the exact arm’s lower and upper weight limits as well as display depth. Ergotron’s HX sheet from 2022 lists 20–42 lb per monitor for the single-arm model, with the maximum reduced to 28 lb when the display depth exceeds 6 inches. Do not treat this as a blanket rating for every HX configuration: the dual and stacked versions have different individual-screen limits. Confirm the current SKU’s specifications and use the manufacturer’s Mount Finder for model-specific guidance.

Two screens side by side or stacked
Pick a dual arm according to whether the screens need to sit side by side or one above the other. Check the supported weight for each display and the mount’s range of motion; a configuration that supports two screens does not necessarily offer the same capacity or adjustment as a single arm. Ergotron’s Mount Finder and mount-selection tool can help narrow compatible arrangements. Confirm the resulting model and specifications before buying.

- The desk is suitable for the clamp or grommet attachment, with enough clearance to install it.
- The arm supports the screen count and orientation you need, with enough lift and extension for your layout.
- The exact SKU’s current specifications, attachment options, warranty, price, and availability have been checked.
