Coolify, Dokploy and CapRover are the strongest general-purpose Vercel alternatives when you want to run applications on your own VPS in 2026. Coolify is the broadest open-source PaaS, Dokploy offers a modern Docker-oriented control panel, and CapRover is the established, template-driven choice. Dokku suits developers who prefer a buildpack-based command line, while Kamal is a deployment tool rather than a complete hosting platform. Easypanel is the main closed-source option with a free tier.
Self-hosting gives you control over servers, data location and deployment architecture, but it also makes you responsible for operating-system updates, backups, certificates, monitoring, incident response and capacity planning. The right choice depends less on a feature checklist than on how much operational work you are prepared to own.

A managed platform hides most server operations behind a deployment workflow. With a self-hosted alternative, you rent or own a virtual machine, install a deployment layer, connect your repository and expose the resulting containers or processes to the internet. You control the machine and its data, but there is no provider team automatically handling every operational concern.
Responsibilities that move to you
- Provisioning a VPS, selecting a supported Linux distribution and restricting network access.
- Applying operating-system, Docker and platform updates without taking production down.
- Managing DNS, TLS certificates, reverse-proxy rules and domain changes.
- Backing up databases, uploaded files, environment configuration and deployment metadata.
- Monitoring CPU, memory, storage, logs, process health and certificate expiry.
- Planning rollback and recovery procedures, then testing that backups can actually be restored.
- Responding to outages, compromised credentials, expired certificates and resource exhaustion.
These obligations apply whether you deploy one personal project or a multi-tenant service. A dashboard can simplify them; it cannot eliminate them.

Coolify: the broadest open-source alternative
Coolify describes itself as “An open-source, self-hostable PaaS alternative to Vercel, Heroku & Netlify that lets you easily deploy static sites, databases, full-stack applications and 280+ one-click services on your own servers.” That breadth is its main advantage: one installation can cover a static front end, a server-rendered application, a database and supporting services without assembling a separate tool for each.
Why choose it
- Its documentation includes framework guidance for Next.js.
- Nixpacks-based detection is reported to recognize frameworks such as Next.js, reducing manual build configuration for conventional repositories.
- The one-click catalogue is useful when you need Redis, queues, databases or other common components alongside the web application.
- The interface is closer to a managed PaaS workflow than a raw Docker host.
Important qualification
Roundups often describe Coolify as the closest self-hosted match for Vercel’s preview-deployment experience. Primary documentation did not establish the full scope of preview behavior here, so confirm how pull-request environments, automatic cleanup and preview domains work in the version you install. Do not assume that a similarly named feature has identical isolation, build caching or URL behavior.
Dokploy: a Docker Compose-oriented control plane
Dokploy’s project description calls it an “Open Source Alternative to Vercel, Netlify and Heroku.” Coverage of the current project credits it with Docker Compose support, databases, multi-server management and a Vercel-like interface. That combination makes it attractive if your application is already represented by a Compose file or if you want to keep deployment configuration close to standard Docker tooling.

What to verify before production
- Whether your required Compose features, health checks, secrets and persistent volumes are supported exactly as written.
- How deployments are serialized when several services share a host.
- How database backups are scheduled, where they are stored and how restoration is performed.
- Which multi-server functions are included in the current release and which require additional configuration.
The project’s former GitHub documentation repository was archived and made read-only on 30 October 2024. Current documentation is maintained at docs.dokploy.com; use that source rather than old repository instructions when installing or upgrading.
CapRover: established Docker deployment with templates
CapRover describes itself as a “Scalable PaaS (automated Docker+nginx) – aka Heroku on Steroids.” Its model is straightforward: package applications as Docker services, let CapRover manage the application routing layer and use its template marketplace for common deployments. Roundups frequently position it as the long-running, stable option with a large catalogue of application templates.
Compatibility requirements
The getting-started documentation states that CapRover is tested on Ubuntu 24.04 with Docker 25 or newer. The project no longer publishes a 32-bit ARMv7 image. Therefore, check both the operating-system architecture and Docker version before provisioning a server; an ARMv7 board that worked with an older image is not a supported target for a new installation.
When it is a good choice
- You prefer explicit Docker application definitions over automatic framework detection.
- You want templates for common services and a mature routing pattern.
- Your team is comfortable inspecting containers, logs and nginx behavior when an application fails.
Dokku, Kamal and Easypanel: the smaller or more specialized choices
Dokku
Dokku is buildpack-based and CLI-only. A git push can provide a compact Heroku-style workflow, but you trade away a graphical control panel and must be comfortable diagnosing buildpacks, plugins, processes and host-level services. It is a sensible choice for a small number of applications where a terminal-first workflow is a feature rather than a limitation.

Kamal
Kamal is a deployment tool, not a hosted platform with an integrated service marketplace. You define the container image, servers, roles, proxies and supporting infrastructure yourself. That extra control is valuable when you already use infrastructure-as-code practices, but it means you must design database provisioning, backups, observability and administrative access instead of selecting them from a panel.
Easypanel
Easypanel is closed-source and offers a free tier. Its appeal is a graphical experience without requiring you to assemble every deployment primitive manually. Evaluate licensing, exportability, upgrade policy, support boundaries and the free tier’s current limits before putting a business-critical application on it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHosting a Next.js application on your own server
Next.js can run outside a managed platform. The official self-hosting guidance states that, when you deploy with next start, the proxy works in a self-hosted deployment with zero configuration. Environment variables are server-only by default unless you deliberately expose them to the client, which helps keep secrets out of browser bundles.
Prepare the application
- Ensure the repository has a production build script and a start script. A typical setup runs
next buildduring the image or release build andnext startto serve the result. - Separate server-only secrets from browser-visible configuration. Values intended for the client normally use the framework’s explicit public-variable convention; database passwords, signing keys and private API tokens must remain server-side.
- Declare the Node.js version and package-manager behavior so local, CI and production builds use the same toolchain.
- Identify persistent data. The application bundle is replaceable; uploaded files, generated assets and databases need volumes or external storage plus a backup plan.
Deploy through a self-hosted panel
- Provision a supported 64-bit Linux VPS with enough CPU, memory and storage for the operating system, deployment panel, build process, application, logs and database. There is no verified universal minimum for these products; workload and concurrency determine the requirement.
- Apply operating-system updates, create an administrative access policy and restrict inbound ports to SSH and the web ports you actually need.
- Install one platform—Coolify, Dokploy or CapRover—and follow its current installation instructions. Do not mix multiple PaaS control planes on one host unless you understand their port, Docker and upgrade interactions.
- Connect the source repository and select the branch or release that should deploy. Review the detected build and start commands instead of accepting them blindly.
- Configure production environment variables in the platform’s secret store. Never commit credentials to the repository or paste them into a client-side configuration file.
- Attach a persistent database volume or connect to a separately managed database. Define migrations as an explicit release step and test a rollback that does not destroy the data volume.
- Map the production domain, enable TLS and verify both the canonical hostname and redirects from any alternate hostname.
- Run a production build, inspect application and proxy logs, and test server-rendered pages, client navigation, image handling, API routes, authentication callbacks and background jobs.
- Schedule backups to a destination outside the VPS. Perform a restore test before treating the deployment as protected.
Be cautious with standalone Docker builds
The Next.js documentation and the framework’s Docker example have been the subject of a GitHub issue concerning the standalone server approach. Because the example and guidance can diverge, check the current Docker instructions for the Next.js version you are deploying. A container that builds successfully may still omit required files, assets or runtime configuration if the standalone output is copied incorrectly.

Preview deployments: do not assume Vercel parity
Preview environments are more than “build every branch.” A useful implementation needs an isolated URL, the correct environment variables, a database strategy, automatic cleanup and access controls. Some self-hosted panels can approximate this through multiple applications or automation, but the exact behavior differs by product and version.
- Ask whether pull requests create independent environments or merely redeploy a shared staging service.
- Check whether preview databases are cloned, shared, ephemeral or unsupported.
- Confirm how preview secrets are separated from production secrets.
- Determine who removes old environments and their storage.
- Test webhook retries and provider limits before relying on previews for every pull request.
Coolify is frequently described in roundups as the closest match for this workflow, but full preview support was not confirmed in primary documentation for this comparison. Validate it directly before making previews a selection criterion.
Resource planning and operating costs
Unverified roundups sometimes quote approximately 2 GB of RAM for Coolify and approximately 1 GB for Dokploy. Those figures are secondary estimates, not official requirements, so they should not be used as guarantees. A build can temporarily need more memory than the running application, and a database, log retention, monitoring agent and image cache all consume capacity.
Estimate capacity from workload
- Count simultaneous builds, not just running applications. Parallel builds can exhaust memory even when production traffic is low.
- Reserve storage for container images, build caches, logs, database files, temporary uploads and at least one local recovery copy.
- Measure peak CPU and memory during builds, migrations and traffic spikes rather than relying on idle readings.
- Keep database storage and backups on a growth plan; a full disk can stop both the application and the backup process.
- Use a separate database host when failure isolation, storage performance or compliance requirements justify the additional cost.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Use SSH keys, disable password login where practical and restrict administrative access by network policy.
- Run the panel and applications with the least privilege their deployment model permits.
- Keep the host kernel, Docker engine, panel and application images updated on a documented schedule.
- Store secrets in the platform’s secret mechanism or an external secret manager, and rotate them after staff or vendor changes.
- Terminate TLS at a maintained reverse proxy and monitor certificate renewal failures.
- Centralize logs or export them before a host failure; local logs disappear with the server.
- Alert on disk usage, memory pressure, failed deployments, unhealthy containers, backup failures and certificate expiry.
- Document the exact steps to rebuild the host from a clean image and restore the application and database.
Common migration problems and fixes
The build passes locally but fails on the VPS
Compare Node.js, package-manager and operating-system versions. Clear stale build caches, verify native dependencies and reproduce the production command in a clean container. Do not “fix” a failed build by committing generated files that should be produced during deployment.
Best Value
- 【No Drill Mounted】Cable management tray can be assembled in as little as 3 minutes or less-simply. Side clips easily clampe the edge of desk, pass through the holes on the sides, and secure excess cables with baskets. Desk cable management supports inward or outward installation to meet your needs in different scenarios, and provides you with great convenience when collecting and organizing wires.
- 【Rubber Pad Protects Desk】Wire organizer under desk built-in soft rubber pads on the clamp protect your desk from scratches, so you will not damage your furniture or office.
- 【Sturdy and Beautiful】Cord management under desk is made of high-quality carbon steel and holds about 15 lbs. The wire basket has 2 holes on each side of the tray to enable your cables to pass freely. Cable baskets are suitable for desk thickness use from 0.4" to 2.4".
- 【Space Saving & Keep Organized】Desk cable management tray holds all your power cords, outlet strips, USB hubs and computer transformers hidden from your feet, and the data cables will not enter the vacuum cleaner to keep your desk clean and tidy. Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
The application starts but returns 502 or 504
Check that the process listens on the interface and port expected by the platform, then inspect container health and reverse-proxy logs. Confirm that the platform’s route points to the running service rather than a previous container or an internal-only port.
Pages work, but images or uploads disappear
Container filesystems are usually replaceable. Move uploads and generated persistent content to a mounted volume or external object storage, and include that data in backups. Re-deploy after a controlled restore test to ensure the application can read the restored files.
Authentication callbacks fail after moving domains
Update the production callback URL, cookie domain, trusted origins and any provider allowlists. Test both HTTPS and the final canonical hostname; a redirect that changes the host can invalidate a callback or secure cookie.
Deployments consume all available memory
Reduce build concurrency, remove unused images and caches, increase capacity or move builds to a separate worker. Monitor peak usage during next build, not only while next start is serving traffic.
How to choose among the alternatives
Choose Coolify when
- You want one open-source panel for applications, databases and a large one-click service catalogue.
- You value framework-aware deployment and a workflow that feels closer to a managed PaaS.
- You are willing to verify preview behavior and operate the underlying servers.
Choose Dokploy when
- Your applications are already described with Docker Compose.
- You want a modern interface and the possibility of managing more than one server.
- You are prepared to validate current documentation because older repository instructions are archived.
Choose CapRover when
- You prefer Docker and nginx automation with a mature template marketplace.
- You can meet the documented Ubuntu 24.04, Docker 25-or-newer and architecture requirements.
- You want a stable, established project rather than automatic framework detection.
Choose Dokku when
- A command-line-only, buildpack-based workflow is sufficient.
- You operate a small deployment surface and want minimal platform abstraction.
Choose Kamal when
- You want to define deployment behavior yourself and already manage infrastructure as code.
- You do not need an integrated PaaS dashboard or service marketplace.
Choose Easypanel when
- You prefer a closed-source graphical panel and its free tier meets your requirements.
- You have reviewed its current licensing, limits, backup behavior and export options.
Final recommendation
For most people searching for an open-source Vercel alternative they can run on a VPS, start by evaluating Coolify, Dokploy and CapRover in that order of breadth, Docker orientation and maturity. Use Coolify for the widest catalogue and the most PaaS-like workflow, Dokploy for Compose-centered deployments and multi-server administration, and CapRover for a proven Docker-and-template approach. Select Dokku or Kamal when a terminal-first, deliberately assembled stack is more valuable than convenience. Whichever platform you choose, treat backups, upgrades, monitoring and recovery as part of the product you are building—not as features the self-hosting panel supplies automatically.
