If grip is the problem, start with tyre upgrades. Funselektor has confirmed that tyres and parts can be upgraded, and its clearest documented gameplay benefit is improved grip. A winch upgrade should not be assumed to increase pulling strength: the developer said stronger pulling power through winch upgrades was not planned at the time of that statement. Because final prices and measured upgrade effects are not published, the safest approach is to diagnose the failure, change one relevant variable, and retry the same obstacle in similar conditions.
What upgrades exist in Over the Hill?
Over the Hill uses vintage-style 4×4 vehicles from the 1960s through the 1980s. A vehicle guide based on Funselektor’s August 2026 progress update describes four vehicle categories. Every vehicle is currently a 4×4 with low and high gears, and none has a differential lock.
Funselektor’s official FAQ confirms cosmetic add-ons and upgrades for parts and tyres, while noting that the team was still reviewing how strongly they would affect gameplay. The official Steam listing says upgrades and equipment are found throughout the world. Merchants and cabins provide vehicle colours, accessories and other cosmetics, so finding an item and purchasing a cosmetic are separate parts of progression.

Tyres are the best first choice for a grip problem
The official FAQ states that tyre condition and weather affect grip. It also confirms changing weather, including sunny, rainy and snowy conditions, plus a day-night cycle. That makes tyres the most defensible first upgrade when the symptom is wheelspin rather than lack of recovery range or collision damage.

When a tyre upgrade is likely to help
- The vehicle spins its wheels while climbing a route it can otherwise reach.
- A wet or snowy surface causes noticeably worse traction.
- The tyres are in poor condition and the failure follows a long or damaging run.
A tyre upgrade is not a promise that every slope becomes climbable. Terrain, route choice, throttle control, gear selection and weather still matter, and no measured tier list or grip percentage has been published.
What a winch upgrade does—and does not—mean
Do not buy a winch upgrade expecting a stronger pull. Funselektor said stronger pulling power through winch upgrades was not planned at the time of the developer statement. Recovery success depends first on whether an anchor is reachable and whether your driving line lets the vehicle load the winch effectively.

Check the recovery problem before spending
- Stop applying throttle if the vehicle is digging in or damaging itself.
- Look for an anchor that the winch can actually reach; a winch cannot help when no usable anchor is available.
- Try a different approach angle, gear or line before treating the equipment as the cause.
- Only then compare recovery equipment descriptions and costs shown in your current build.
Community advice pairing tyres with a winch may be a sensible player preference, but it is not a controlled comparison or an official best-order recommendation.

Damage, repairs and the limits of an upgrade
Funselektor says that as you damage a car, its visuals and performance deteriorate. If the vehicle becomes harder to control after impacts, a repair option and conservation of repair kits address the documented cause more directly than buying an unrelated performance part. The available information does not establish that an engine, suspension or other upgrade restores damage-related performance.

A repeatable way to test any upgrade
No final per-vehicle specification sheet, complete model list, price table or measured upgrade-effect table has been published. Use a controlled comparison instead of relying on a universal tier list.
- Write down the failure: wheelspin, becoming stuck, collision damage or an unclear item effect.
- Record the vehicle category, current tyres, parts, recovery equipment, gear and visible damage.
- Read the displayed upgrade description and price before confirming the purchase.
- Change one relevant variable only. For a grip problem, that normally means tyres; for recovery, evaluate equipment and anchor geometry.
- Retry the same obstacle with the closest practical match for route, weather, tyre condition and vehicle damage.
- Compare the result while noting that one attempt cannot establish a percentage improvement.
Can you undo an upgrade purchase?
Refund, resale and upgrade-undo behaviour have not been established in the available official materials. A demo guide confirms that mounting and unmounting are supported, but that does not prove that a purchased upgrade can be refunded or converted back into currency. Check the current in-game build screen for an explicit remove, sell or refund command before committing resources; do not assume one exists.

- Grip on the terrain and weather you actually drive.
- Recovery usefulness, including reachable anchors and approach geometry.
- How much damage and repair-resource pressure the option addresses.
- Sensitivity to weather and tyre condition.
- Currency efficiency once repeatable prices and measured effects are available.
Per-vehicle power, weight, ground clearance, turning behaviour, factory tyres, suspension, upgrade prices and measured gains remain unpublished or unverified. That means the best upgrade can differ by vehicle category and route, even though tyres are the strongest documented starting point for a grip complaint.

Bottom line for your next purchase
Buy tyres first when the symptom is slipping. For a stranded vehicle, improve the line and confirm a reachable anchor rather than assuming a stronger winch. For a damaged vehicle, prioritize repair options and protect your repair-kit supply. Read each current description, change one variable, and retest before building a personal upgrade order.
