The best Vintage Story setup depends on what you want from the game. Choose Exploration for a low-pressure first world, Standard for the intended survival experience, Wilderness Survival for severe consequences, Creative Building for construction, or a custom combination when you want a specific balance. You can then tune world-generation rules, appearance and class, clothing, graphics, accessibility, and—on a server—administrative settings without installing a mod.
The labels and effects below come from the Vintage Story Wiki and a December 22, 2025 hosting guide. Wiki pages are community-maintained and version-sensitive: the settings reference was last verified for version 1.19.7, while the clothing reference was verified for 1.22.5. Compare names and available options with the build you actually run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart with the preset that matches your goal
When you create a world, Vintage Story lets you select a pre-made template or customize individual rules. A preset is a starting point, not a permanent commitment to one play style. Use the table to decide where to begin.
| Preset | Best for | What changes | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exploration | New players, relaxed exploration and learning systems | Hostile creature aggression and temporal stability threats are turned off; hunger and temperature pressure are reduced; inventory is retained on death. | You learn fewer of the survival pressures that define a Standard world. |
| Standard | The full survival experience | Temporal stability, hunger, realistic temperature, first-night monsters and inventory loss on death are active. | Early mistakes can cost food, equipment and a whole inventory. |
| Wilderness Survival | Players who want the harshest preset | Immediate inventory drop, random respawn within a massive radius, reduced health and stronger creatures create severe penalties. | Recovery after death can be a major expedition rather than a short setback. |
| Homo sapiens | A survival world without the mystical-lore layer | Mystical features such as traders and ancient ruins are removed. | Some exploration, trading and lore content is unavailable. |
| Creative Building | Construction, testing and design | Starts with a flat building world and Creative Mode. | It is not a conventional resource-and-survival progression world. |
A practical first-world choice
For a player who has never learned Vintage Story’s food, temperature and temporal systems, Exploration is the safest starting point. For a player who wants to learn those systems without the most punishing death rules, Standard is the better baseline. Wilderness Survival is a deliberate challenge, not an accessibility setting.

Build a custom world instead of accepting every preset rule
After selecting a template, open the individual world settings and adjust only the rules that solve your particular problem. The most useful controls fall into three groups: threat, realism and resource or terrain distribution.
| Setting | What it controls | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Grace Timer | How long monsters are delayed at the start of a world; the documented range is 0–10 in-game days. | Increase it when you want time to establish shelter, food and tools before the first serious nights. |
| Death Punishment | The consequences of dying, including what happens to carried items and recovery. | Choose a gentler option if corpse runs are blocking learning; retain a harsher option when risk is the point. |
| Dropped Item Timer | How long dropped items remain available; the documented range is 5–60 minutes. | Use a longer duration when distance, difficult terrain or multiplayer latency makes recovery slow. |
| True Winters | Whether winter follows the more demanding seasonal and temperature rules. | Enable it for a stronger climate challenge; leave it off when you are learning agriculture or travel. |
| Temporal Stability | Whether temporal instability and its related survival pressure are active. | Keep it active for Standard-like play; disable it for a calmer exploration world. |
| Climate Distribution | How climate is distributed across the generated world. | Adjust it when you want a different spread of temperatures and environmental regions. |
| Surface Deposit Frequency | How frequently surface resource deposits occur. | Change it when prospecting and early resource availability are too scarce or too generous. |
How to tune without losing the intended game
- Choose the preset closest to your goal.
- Change one or two rules that address the specific friction you have identified—for example, the grace timer and dropped-item duration.
- Leave hunger, temperature and temporal systems together if you want the survival loop to remain coherent.
- Record your choices in the world name or a note so you can reproduce the setup for another save or server.
Changing every slider at once makes it difficult to tell which rule changed the experience. A staged approach also makes it easier to return to a recognizable Standard or Exploration baseline.

Customize your seraph before you enter the world
Vanilla character creation changes more than a single skin color. You can choose hairstyle, facial hair, eye color, skin tone, voice pitch and starter clothing. The class selection contains six choices and affects hunger rate, movement speed, crafting abilities, combat strengths and weaknesses.
| Class | How to think about the choice |
|---|---|
| Commoner | The balanced default. Choose it when you do not want a strong specialization to shape the opening hours. |
| Hunter | A specialized option for a play style that leans toward hunting and combat-related strengths; inspect the in-game description for the exact modifiers in your version. |
| Malefactor | A specialist choice with its own strengths and weaknesses. It is better selected for a deliberate role than as a blind first pick. |
| Clockmaker | A specialist class associated with crafting-oriented advantages and trade-offs; read the creation screen before committing. |
| Blackguard | A combat-focused specialist with corresponding weaknesses. It suits players who want class identity to influence encounters. |
| Tailor | A clothing-oriented specialist. It is useful when garment creation and outfit management are central to the play style. |
Class effects are rules, not cosmetic labels: a faster hunger rate changes food planning, movement modifiers change travel, and crafting or combat bonuses alter which early tasks feel efficient. If you are unsure, Commoner avoids locking your first world to a narrow strategy. You can still personalize appearance and clothing without selecting a specialist class.

Use clothing for warmth as well as appearance
Clothes are equipment that changes the player’s appearance, but many garments also provide cold protection. Accessories can be purely cosmetic. Starter clothes come from class selection; additional pieces can be crafted from cloth, leather or related materials, found as ruin loot, or purchased from traders. Tailors can craft many pieces that are restricted elsewhere.
Warmth and cold damage
Under default world settings, a character without clothing begins taking cold damage below 0°C. A documented worked example gives a full, good-condition fur set +6.5°C warmth. Treat that number as an example tied to the stated garment condition and version, not as a universal value for every outfit or future release.

Condition and repairs
Clothing loses condition while worn. The clothing reference records a 100% condition decrease after 54 days (six months) under default settings. Repair effectiveness depends on the material or tool: flax twine restores 10%, linen restores 50%, and a sewing kit restores 75%.
- Keep a spare layer before a long winter trip instead of waiting for the worn set to fail.
- Use the least valuable repair material for routine maintenance and reserve a sewing kit for expensive or hard-to-replace pieces.
- Check condition before entering cold regions; warmth from a badly degraded garment should not be treated as equivalent to a good-condition set.
Set graphics, interface and motion comfort deliberately
Graphics options are most useful when you treat them as a trade-off between visual quality, frame rate, readability and comfort. The settings reference was last verified for Vintage Story 1.19.7, so a newer build may rename, move or add controls.

| Goal | Settings to inspect | Useful adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce GPU load | SSAO, shadows, particles, dynamic lights and resolution | Lower the expensive effects first, then resolution if necessary. Occlusion culling can reduce the amount of unseen geometry the GPU processes. |
| Stabilize frame rate | FPS limit, VSync and RAM optimization | Set an FPS limit appropriate to the display and test VSync according to whether tearing or latency bothers you. |
| Improve readability | GUI scale, minimap and block or coordinate overlays | Increase GUI scale until text is legible at your playing distance; enable the overlays you need for building, navigation or troubleshooting. |
| Reduce motion discomfort | View bobbing and camera shake strength | Reduce or disable both if walking motion or impacts cause discomfort. |
| Change camera and pointer behavior | Immersive mouse mode and immersive first-person mode | Choose the mode that matches whether you want a continuously captured pointer and a more immersive camera presentation. |
A safe performance-tuning order
- Apply the resolution and FPS limit you can sustain consistently.
- Reduce shadows, SSAO, particles and dynamic lights one at a time.
- Enable occlusion culling and observe whether busy scenes become smoother.
- Adjust GUI scale and overlays separately; visual clarity is not a performance failure.
- Turn down view bobbing or camera shake whenever comfort is the limiting factor.
Because the documented settings page targets 1.19.7, use the in-game search or category labels in your installed version rather than assuming an old menu location is unchanged.

Server owners can alter several rules through startup parameters and serverconfig.json. A December 22, 2025 hosting guide documents controls for pausing time when the server is empty, public advertising, the length of an in-game month, winter severity, food spoilage, cave-ins, block gravity and the number of rotating local backups.
Server rules worth considering
| Control | Why an administrator might use it | Player-facing consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Stop time when empty | Prevents the calendar and unattended processes from advancing while nobody is connected. | Players do not return to a world that progressed entirely without them. |
| Public advertising | Makes a server discoverable to the wider server list. | More visibility also means you should review access, moderation and backup practices. |
daysPerMonth |
Extends or shortens the in-game year by changing month length. | Seasonal planning, agriculture and travel have more or less real-time breathing room. |
harshWinters |
Enables a more demanding winter rule set. | Cold-weather preparation becomes a larger part of multiplayer planning. |
foodSpoilSpeed |
Adjusts how quickly food quality declines. | Storage, preservation and scheduled communal meals become more or less urgent. |
caveIns |
Turns cave-in behavior on or off. | Mining and underground construction require a different safety discipline. |
blockGravity for sand, gravel and stone |
Applies gravity behavior to those block types. | Excavation and construction can trigger collapses, so supports and distance matter. |
| Rotating local backups | Sets how many backup copies are retained in rotation. | More copies provide more recovery points but consume additional storage. |
Change server settings safely
- Stop the server and make a copy of the existing configuration before editing.
- Confirm the parameter names and accepted values against the server version you installed; the guide documents examples, not a guarantee that every release uses identical syntax.
- Change only one or two settings.
- Start the server, connect as an administrator and verify the behavior in a controlled area.
- Play for several in-game days before changing anything else, so seasonal, spoilage and timing effects have time to appear.
- Keep scheduled or rotating backups and test that a backup can actually be restored.
For a realism-oriented multiplayer world, a longer daysPerMonth, harsh winters, cave-ins and tuned spoilage can work together, but each rule increases planning and administrative responsibility. A public server should prioritize recoverability before adding irreversible hazards.
Quick Recap
Ready-made vanilla profiles
| Goal | Recommended starting point | Personalization |
|---|---|---|
| Gentle first world | Exploration preset with default generation. | Choose your appearance, set a comfortable GUI scale and disable view bobbing if motion is distracting. |
| Classic survival with less frustration | Standard preset. | Increase the grace timer, select a less punishing death rule and extend the dropped-item duration while retaining hunger, temperature and temporal systems. |
| Hard survival | Wilderness Survival, or Standard with additional hazards. | Add True Winters, temporal threats, harsher death consequences, faster spoilage, cave-ins and block gravity gradually rather than simultaneously. |
| Builder or creative project | Creative Building. | Alternatively use a naturally generated world and enable Creative Mode when you need terrain variety with unrestricted building. |
| Multiplayer realism | Standard-style survival on a managed server. | Extend the month length, enable harsh winters and cave-ins, tune spoilage, and maintain rotating backups. Validate every parameter against the installed server version. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing Wilderness Survival as a first tutorial: severe penalties can hide whether a problem is a missing skill or simply an intentionally harsh rule. Start with Exploration or Standard unless challenge is your explicit goal.
- Changing every world rule: you lose a recognizable baseline. Adjust one or two variables, then observe several in-game days.
- Ignoring clothing condition: a fur set’s documented warmth assumes good condition; worn garments require repair or replacement.
- Copying an old settings guide verbatim: the settings reference was verified for 1.19.7 and clothing data for 1.22.5. Confirm labels and effects in your build.
- Enabling server hazards without recovery: cave-ins, gravity and harsh winters are manageable when backups and rollback procedures are already working.
- Treating class selection as a cosmetic choice: each class changes hunger, movement, crafting and combat behavior, so read the modifiers before choosing a specialist.
