For most 2026 survival worlds, build an iron-golem farm first, then a general hostile-mob farm. Iron supplies rails, hoppers, anvils and other infrastructure; a general farm adds mixed drops and experience. Add a creeper farm when gunpowder is your limiting resource. Guardian and raid farms can outperform simpler projects for specific loot, but they demand more preparation and are far more sensitive to edition, location and release.

If you want to run these farms with friends, Godlike.Host provides Minecraft Java, Bedrock and modded Minecraft servers with a game panel, backups and SFTP/FTP access.

“Still works in 2026” does not mean that an old schematic is guaranteed on every installation. It means the underlying mechanics remain available and the design has been checked against your exact Java or Bedrock edition and game release. Mojang maintains separate guidance and continuing changelogs for both editions, so verify a design against the patch you actually play before investing hours in construction.

Quick picks: which farm should you build?

Farm Best use Relative investment Edition and location sensitivity Player involvement
Iron golem Reliable iron and poppies for infrastructure Low to medium Village rules differ sharply between Java and Bedrock; location is usually flexible Java designs can run while their chunks are loaded, without the player standing at the farm
General hostile mob Mixed drops and XP Medium Spawn-proofing and AFK geometry matter in both editions Usually requires a nearby waiting or AFK position
Creeper Gunpowder for rockets and TNT Medium Ocean placement and filtering details must match the edition and release AFK position is part of the design
Guardian Large quantities of prismarine, fish and XP High Tied to an ocean monument, water handling and the exact design Waiting position and transport system are essential
Raid Emeralds and raid loot High to very high Java and Bedrock behavior diverges; some Java builds depend on coordinates and terrain Requires a controlled village and a functioning raid trigger
Spawner or fall grinder Early, simple XP and drops Low, if a suitable spawner exists Spawner location and mob type determine the result Often requires the player to deliver final hits for XP

These categories describe the job each farm does, not a guaranteed production rate. No authoritative, independently verified items-per-hour figure is established for these designs without naming the exact build, edition, release, simulation distance, AFK position and test method. Treat any uncited rate as a claim to verify, not a promise.

How a vanilla mob farm actually works

A mob farm is a structure that makes mob drops easier to obtain in larger quantities. Its performance comes from controlling four stages:

  1. Spawning: a valid, usually dark, area gives the game places to create mobs.
  2. Transport: water, fall shafts, movement rules or another mechanism moves mobs away from the spawning area.
  3. Killing: fall damage, entity damage, a player hit or a specialized chamber finishes the mobs.
  4. Collection: hoppers, water streams or storage gather the drops while you wait in the correct location.

Hostile-mob caps and the number of competing spawn spaces make the surroundings as important as the farm itself. A dark platform surrounded by caves, the night-time surface and unlit terrain gives the game many alternative places to spend its hostile-mob quota. Spawn-proofing those spaces, or moving the farm over an area with fewer alternatives, is often more valuable than adding another platform.

AFK distance is part of the design

The game only attempts spawning and processing within edition-specific simulation and activation ranges. A farm therefore needs a deliberate player waiting position. Stand too close and mobs may fail to spawn or appear outside the intended chamber; stand too far away and the area may stop processing. Use the AFK coordinates specified by the design, then confirm that the farm is inside your chosen simulation distance.

Why surface farms slow down at night

A surface farm has the greatest competition when night falls because the surrounding ground becomes dark enough for hostile mobs. The same design can look productive during the day and weak overnight unless the surface, caves and other dark spaces are lit, filled or otherwise made invalid. Ocean placement is one way to reduce competing land and cave spaces, but it does not remove the need to follow the build’s AFK geometry.

General hostile-mob farm: the flexible baseline

Choose this when you want a mixture of drops—such as bones, arrows, string, rotten flesh and gunpowder—and a repeatable source of experience. It is the best all-purpose comparison point because the design can be scaled from a simple tower to a large, spawn-proofed structure.

Build sequence

  1. Survey the area. Decide whether the farm will be over an ocean, high above land or near a perimeter you can spawn-proof. Record the height of the surrounding terrain and caves.
  2. Construct dark spawning floors. Use the exact dimensions and ceiling height of your chosen design. Small changes can admit spiders or prevent other mobs from fitting.
  3. Add movement channels. Water streams, open trapdoors, pathing manipulation or timed flushing move mobs toward a central shaft. Keep the collection route separate from spawning spaces so items do not block movement.
  4. Choose the kill chamber. A fall shaft is simple; a player-facing chamber is better when you need XP or drops that require a player kill. Provide safe access for repairs.
  5. Install collection and storage. Place hoppers beneath the final landing area or use water streams into a hopper line. Test that drops cannot land on slabs, walls or unloaded sections.
  6. Build the AFK platform. Measure from the spawning floors, not from the storage room. Follow the design’s vertical and horizontal distances.
  7. Spawn-proof competing spaces. Light caves and nearby ground, fill deep dark pockets or use slabs, buttons and other non-spawnable blocks where appropriate. Recheck after expanding the farm.

Fall damage and player hits

Most common hostile mobs can be killed by a 24-block fall; witches need about 30 blocks. That makes fall height a useful design axis, but not a universal answer. Armor, mob type, health changes and the requirement for a player-delivered final hit can turn a fully automatic shaft into an XP collection problem. If you want experience, leave mobs alive at one-hit health and provide a safe manual-finishing area. If you want unattended drops, use a killing mechanism that does not depend on your attack.

Creeper farm: specialize when gunpowder is the bottleneck

Creeper farms use the same spawn, transport, kill and collection pattern as a general farm, but add filters so creepers are favored and other mobs are excluded. Gunpowder supports firework rockets, TNT and several utility recipes, making specialization worthwhile once a mixed farm cannot keep up.

Why ocean placement is common

The cited creeper design recommends building over an ocean to reduce competing spawn spaces. Its AFK platform is positioned relative to ocean level, so copy the vertical relationship rather than choosing an arbitrary height. Ocean construction also makes surrounding spawn-proofing easier, although caves and nearby islands still need attention.

Filtering details to verify before building

  • Trapdoors: low ceilings and trapdoor arrangements can prevent taller mobs from spawning while allowing creepers.
  • Height filters: floor-to-ceiling measurements must match the exact edition and release; a block that works in one design can admit spiders or stop creepers in another.
  • Spider prevention: some creeper layouts still spawn spiders. Add the specified buttons, carpets or spacing only when the tutorial confirms their placement.
  • Cat-driven movement: if the design uses cats to frighten creepers toward a drop, protect the cats and check that their placement has not changed in your release.

Do not assume that a Java creeper schematic can be mirrored on Bedrock. Spawn rules, mob behavior and simulation details differ enough that the tutorial must name your edition.

Iron-golem farm: the infrastructure priority

Iron-golem farming uses village mechanics to produce iron and poppies. For a new survival base, this is often the highest-value first automation project because iron feeds rails, hoppers, minecarts, anvils, shields, buckets and many other builds.

Java requirements and operation

Java designs arrange villagers, beds and the conditions that make the game recognize a functioning village, then move spawned golems into a killing and collection area. The cited Java tutorial notes that production can continue indefinitely while the farm’s chunks are loaded, without requiring the player to remain at the farm. “Loaded” still matters: if no player or other permitted mechanism keeps the chunks active, the game will not process the farm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bedrock is not a Java layout

Bedrock farms use different village requirements and detection rules. A Java villager count, bed arrangement or workstation layout is not a safe template for Bedrock. Use a Bedrock-specific design, keep villagers from linking to beds or workstations outside the intended village, and verify the tutorial against the current Bedrock release.

Common failure points

  • A nearby bed, bell or workstation links to the villagers and changes the village boundary.
  • Villagers cannot reach or claim the required beds and workstations.
  • The kill chamber is outside the active chunk area.
  • Golems spawn on roofs, nearby ground or inside caves instead of the collection platform.
  • Water pushes villagers or golems into positions that break the detection setup.

When output stops, inspect village links and alternate spawn surfaces before rebuilding the entire farm.

Guardian farm: an endgame project around an ocean monument

Guardian farms are appropriate when you need large volumes of prismarine, sea lantern materials, fish or guardian experience and are prepared for a major construction site. A basic design contains a flooded spawning area, a killing area, a transport method, item collection and a place for the player to wait.

What makes guardians difficult

The ocean monument’s existing geometry is the central constraint. You must control water, define where guardians can spawn, and move them quickly enough that the spawning area remains clear. Draining or enclosing the monument can require substantial sand, gravity-block removal and temporary scaffolding. Designs that leave water in place can reduce excavation but demand more precise currents and barriers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the killing method carefully

Guardians have thorns-like retaliation that can make some iron-golem killing designs maintenance-heavy. A golem may die quickly, forcing repeated replacements and reducing the value of an apparently automatic chamber. Compare the design’s damage source, replacement requirements, collection safety and experience access before committing to it.

Build checklist

  • Locate the correct monument and clear a safe approach.
  • Mark the spawning and transport boundaries before draining or enclosing water.
  • Separate guardian movement from the player’s collection and repair paths.
  • Protect hoppers and storage from water flow and overflow.
  • Place the AFK platform where the design specifies, then test with a short session before finishing decoration.

Raid farm: powerful loot with the most version caveats

Raid farms force raids to spawn around a controlled village and move raid mobs into a holding or killing area. Their payoff can include emeralds and other raid loot, but their behavior diverges substantially between Java and Bedrock.

Why Java raid farms can be coordinate-sensitive

Advanced Java designs may depend on exact chunk coordinates, rotation and an ocean location several chunks from land. Those requirements are not cosmetic: changing the orientation or moving the build can alter raid-spawn positions and break the transport path. Follow the design’s coordinate and rotation instructions literally.

Safer commissioning procedure

  1. Create a copy of the world or use a test world with the same edition and release.
  2. Build only the village, raid trigger and holding area first.
  3. Trigger one raid and observe where each wave appears.
  4. Confirm that villagers remain linked and that raid mobs cannot escape into caves, water or nearby terrain.
  5. Only then complete the killing chamber, storage and AFK platform.

Because raid rules and tutorials change, treat a raid farm as a version-specific engineering project. A design that worked in an older Java release is not evidence that it works unchanged in a 2026 patch, and a Java tutorial does not establish Bedrock compatibility.

Spawner traps and simple fall grinders

If you find a skeleton, zombie or spider spawner early, a spawner trap can be the quickest route to XP and basic drops. You cannot move a naturally generated spawner in vanilla survival, so the farm’s location is fixed. Clear the required area around it, use water to move mobs into a chamber and choose between automatic damage and a player finishing slit.

When a 24- or 30-block fall is appropriate

A 24-block drop is enough for most common hostile mobs, while witches need about 30 blocks. Measure from the block where the mob begins its fall to the landing surface; counting from the platform floor or a decorative lip can leave mobs with too much health. If the farm mixes mob types, design for the toughest one or separate the streams.

Automatic killing is convenient for unattended drops, but it can prevent XP and certain player-kill drops. A one-hit chamber is preferable when you need experience, rare drops or enchantment-related benefits. Provide lighting and a solid barrier so mobs cannot attack you while you finish them.

Java and Bedrock: what you can and cannot transfer

Component What is generally transferable What must be edition-specific
Basic concept Spawn, move, kill and collect stages Exact spawn rates, activation ranges and mob behavior
Iron farms Using villagers and golems for iron Village recognition, bed/workstation requirements and layouts
Creeper farms Dark platforms and gunpowder collection Trapdoor, height, spider-filter and AFK measurements
Guardian farms Monument-based spawning and transport Water handling, killing mechanics and timing
Raid farms Controlled village and raid-mob collection Wave spawning, village behavior, coordinates and rotation

Use a tutorial that names both your edition and the exact release. If it says only “Minecraft” or shows an old interface, regard it as a concept reference rather than a construction plan.

How to choose by progression and objective

Early survival

Start with a spawner trap if one is conveniently available. Otherwise, build a compact general hostile-mob farm after you have safe access to the required materials and a reliable storage system. Avoid a monument or raid project until you can absorb a failed build.

Established base and large infrastructure

Prioritize an iron-golem farm, then add a general hostile-mob farm. Iron removes a recurring bottleneck in rails, hoppers and tools, while the general farm supplies the miscellaneous drops that specialist farms do not.

Rocket or TNT production

Choose a creeper farm when gunpowder, rather than experience or mixed drops, is what limits your projects. Build over an ocean when the design calls for it and reserve time for spider-filter and AFK-distance testing.

Prismarine and high-volume XP

Select a guardian farm only if you have an ocean monument, the materials for water control and the patience to test transport and killing. The project is justified by a sustained need for guardian-specific drops, not by the promise of a generic “fastest farm.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Emeralds and raid loot

Use a raid farm after you understand village linking and can test in a copy of the world. Treat edition and release compatibility as a prerequisite, not a troubleshooting step after construction.

Commissioning, testing and troubleshooting checklist

  1. Record your environment: edition, exact game release, simulation distance, difficulty and whether commands or experimental features are enabled.
  2. Read the complete design: note required coordinates, orientation, height, villagers, cats, beds, workstations and AFK position before placing blocks.
  3. Test the smallest functional unit: one spawning floor, one transport route and one kill chamber reveal mistakes faster than a finished tower.
  4. Watch for competing spawns: inspect caves, roofs, shorelines, monument interiors and nearby dark rooms.
  5. Measure output over a controlled interval: use the same AFK position and simulation distance each time. Do not compare your result with an unqualified items-per-hour claim.
  6. Check collection: confirm that hoppers are powered or placed correctly, water reaches every corner and storage cannot fill unnoticed.
  7. Test failure recovery: know how to remove a stuck villager, replace a damaged golem, relink beds or disable a raid before decorating.

Symptom-to-cause guide

  • No hostile mobs: the player is at the wrong distance, the area is not dark, the farm is outside simulation range or the hostile cap is filled elsewhere.
  • Few mobs: caves and surface terrain are competing; spawn-proof them and retest from the prescribed AFK location.
  • Wrong mobs: ceiling height, trapdoor spacing or spider filters do not match the design.
  • Mobs stop in transport: water levels, signs, trapdoors or collision blocks are misaligned.
  • Iron output stops: villagers lost bed or workstation links, a nearby block created a second village or the farm unloaded.
  • Raid waves appear outside the chamber: the village center, build rotation or coordinate assumptions are wrong.
  • Guardian farm needs constant repairs: the killing method is exposing iron golems to retaliation or the transport path is leaving guardians in the wrong chamber.

Lag, storage and maintenance

A productive farm can still be a poor base neighbor if it keeps hundreds of entities moving. Prefer designs that remove mobs quickly, avoid unnecessary water clocks and provide an on/off switch or safe shutdown. Keep item storage sized for the actual session length; a full chest or hopper line can make a farm appear broken while drops are simply backed up.

Inspect villagers, cats, iron golems and raid holding cells after game updates. Entity positions can change when chunks unload, and a farm that depends on a mob remaining in one block may need a reset procedure. For long AFK sessions, protect the player from falls, phantoms, hostile access and accidental starvation according to the design’s safety instructions.

What “best” means for your world

The best vanilla farm is the one whose output matches your bottleneck and whose mechanics you can keep loaded, supplied and maintained. Iron wins as an infrastructure foundation; a general hostile farm is the broadest second project; creepers deserve specialization when gunpowder limits rockets or TNT. Guardian and raid farms are powerful but should be selected for a specific resource and built only from edition- and release-checked instructions.
