There is no single best-value color ink printer for every household. Refillable tank models usually minimize ink purchases for frequent printing, while high-yield cartridge all-in-ones can be easier to handle and less expensive to buy initially. Your best choice depends on monthly pages, document mix, scanning needs, and local pricing.
Four models or model families have sufficiently documented specifications here: Epson EcoTank ET-2800, Canon PIXMA G3270 MegaTank, HP Smart Tank configurations, and Brother MFC-J4335DW INKvestment. The available manufacturer information does not support a defensible, standardized ranking of five models, so this guide presents a transparent shortlist and a method for evaluating a fifth candidate without pretending that unlike yield claims are directly comparable.
What “best value” means for an ink printer
Value is the total usefulness you receive for the money you spend, not simply the lowest shelf price. For an ink printer, evaluate four costs and constraints together:
Recommended Free Tools
- Purchase cost: the printer, included ink, warranty, and any required accessories.
- Supply cost: replacement bottles or cartridges, including how often you expect to buy them.
- Workload fit: whether the printer can handle your monthly pages, color coverage, paper sizes, and duty cycle without constant intervention.
- Features: scanning, copying, faxing, automatic document feeding, duplex printing, wireless connectivity, and paper capacity.
A tank printer can have a higher purchase price but substantially lower replacement-ink spending for a family that prints hundreds of pages each month. A cartridge printer with high-yield options may be better value for occasional users who want a familiar, low-commitment workflow. Neither design is automatically cheaper for every owner.

Shortlist at a glance
The table uses manufacturer-reported figures. “Up to” values are estimates produced under each company’s stated test method; they are not independent laboratory results and should not be treated as a cross-brand cost-per-page ranking.
| Model or family | Ink design | Reported yield | Core functions or notes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Epson EcoTank ET-2800 | Refillable EcoFit bottles | Up to 4,500 black and 7,500 color replacement pages | Wireless color all-in-one: print, scan, copy | Epson says setup uses some included ink to charge the print head; actual yield and cost vary. |
| Canon PIXMA G3270 MegaTank | Refillable tanks | Up to 6,000 black and 7,700 color pages per full bottle set | Home/home-office refillable-tank all-in-one | Canon Canada’s estimate uses its individual method, an ISO/IEC 24712 chart, and continuous-print simulation after initial setup. |
| HP Smart Tank configurations (including 5101, 7301, and 7602) | Refillable tanks | HP reports approximately 6,000–8,000 pages per fill for listed configurations | Features differ by exact model | Choose and verify the specific model; the range is an HP claim, not independent comparative testing. |
| Brother MFC-J4335DW INKvestment | Replaceable cartridges, with standard and high-yield options | Standard: up to 3,000 black/1,500 color; high yield: up to 6,000 black/5,000 color | Color inkjet all-in-one | It is a cartridge system, not a refillable bottle tank. Brother bases displayed remaining-yield figures on ISO/IEC 24711. |

Refillable bottle-tank printers
Epson EcoTank ET-2800: a simple home all-in-one
The ET-2800 is a wireless color all-in-one that prints, scans, and copies. Its EcoFit bottles are designed for a refillable tank workflow rather than disposable cartridges. That makes it a logical fit for a household that prints schoolwork, forms, recipes, and occasional photos often enough to use a meaningful amount of ink.
Epson reports replacement-bottle yields of up to 4,500 black pages and 7,500 color pages. Those are replacement estimates, not a promise about the first fill or about every document. Epson explains that initial setup consumes some of the supplied ink while the print head is charged. Pages with heavy graphics, high-quality settings, frequent cleaning cycles, unusual paper, humidity, and long gaps between jobs can all change the result.
Epson also advertises savings of up to 90% compared with cartridges and says one replacement set is equivalent to about 80 individual cartridges. The company’s note says the comparison used specified Epson cartridge MSRPs and yields as of March 2024, and that actual savings vary by print tasks, volume, and usage conditions. Treat that statement as a scenario based on Epson’s assumptions, not a universal household guarantee.
The ET-2800 is most compelling when low replacement-ink frequency matters more than the lowest possible entry price. If you print only a few pages per month, the cash tied up in a tank printer may take a long time to pay back.

Canon PIXMA G3270 MegaTank: high stated bottle yields
Canon Canada describes the PIXMA G3270 as a refillable-tank all-in-one for home and home-office use. Canon reports up to 6,000 black pages and 7,700 color pages from a full bottle set. Its stated method uses an individual Canon test procedure, the ISO/IEC 24712 chart, and a continuous-printing simulation after initial setup.

Those details matter because a continuous stream of standardized pages is different from a household that prints one page today, a photo next week, and a multi-page color project next month. The reported figures are useful for understanding the system’s intended high-yield positioning, but they should not be converted directly into a comparison with another brand’s number unless the test conditions and replacement prices align.
Availability requires particular care. A Canon U.S. catalog listing is marked no longer available, while Canon Canada still describes the G3270. That does not establish current stock in every country. Confirm that the exact regional model, bottles, warranty, and support are available where you live before treating it as a current purchase choice.
HP Smart Tank: select the exact configuration
HP’s Smart Tank guide covers several configurations, including the 5101, 7301, and 7602. HP reports a range of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 pages per fill for the listed configurations. Because the guide groups multiple models, that range should not be read as one specification shared identically by every printer in the family.
Start with the features you actually need, then verify the individual model’s specifications. A model number can determine whether you receive the paper handling, automatic document feeding, duplex behavior, display, or connectivity options required by your workflow. Confirm the included-bottle contents and the replacement-bottle part numbers as well.

HP’s range is a manufacturer estimate. It is useful for identifying the family as a high-yield tank design, but it is not an independently verified performance comparison against Epson, Canon, or Brother.

Cartridge value without a refill-bottle workflow
Brother MFC-J4335DW INKvestment
The MFC-J4335DW is a color inkjet all-in-one that uses replaceable cartridges. Brother offers standard-yield and high-yield options, so you can choose between a lower purchase commitment and fewer supply changes. Brother reports up to 3,000 black and 1,500 color pages for standard cartridges, or up to 6,000 black and 5,000 color pages for high-yield cartridges.
Because the printer uses cartridges, it belongs in a different category from bottle tanks. You do not pour ink into an onboard reservoir; you replace a cartridge when it is depleted. That can be more convenient for users who dislike handling liquid ink, share a printer with people who need a simple procedure, or print irregularly and prefer sealed supplies.
Brother states that its displayed remaining-yield figures are based on the ISO/IEC 24711 industry standard for measuring cartridge yields. Even with a named standard, your output will vary with page coverage, print settings, cleaning, paper, and the mix of black-only and color jobs. Use the high-yield option only if its current price and your volume justify the larger outlay.
Why published page yields are not directly interchangeable
Page-yield numbers look precise, but the conditions behind them differ. One company may simulate continuous printing after setup; another may report a cartridge result under an industry standard; a third may describe a family range rather than one exact model. “Up to” also signals a ceiling under stated conditions, not a minimum guaranteed count.
Real output changes with:
- Text density, photos, charts, and full-page color coverage.
- Draft, normal, and high-quality settings.
- Automatic cleaning and print-head maintenance.
- How often the printer is used and how long it sits idle.
- Paper type, size, absorbency, and environmental conditions.
- Initial setup, which can consume part of the supplied ink.
For that reason, this guide does not calculate a single cross-brand cost per page. Replacement prices, test patterns, regional packaging, and yield assumptions are not supplied on a consistent basis. A reliable comparison requires current local supply prices and the same coverage and test method for every model.
Is an ink-tank printer worth it?
It can be, but only when your usage supports the higher or different upfront decision. Use a simple break-even exercise rather than relying on a marketing percentage.

Estimate your real workload
- Count the black-and-white pages and color pages you print in a typical month. Include school terms, tax season, and other spikes.
- Separate ordinary documents from photos or graphics that cover most of a sheet with ink.
- Note whether you need scanning, copying, faxing, an automatic document feeder, duplex printing, or a particular paper size.
- Record the current local price of the printer and one replacement supply cycle for the exact model.
Interpret the result
- Frequent, predictable printing: a bottle tank is more likely to repay its purchase premium because replacement bottles are intended to last for many pages.
- Occasional printing: a high-yield cartridge model may avoid paying for capacity you will not use for years.
- Heavy color or photo work: compare the documented color yield and paper-handling features, not just black-page numbers.
- Irregular use: prioritize maintenance convenience and the manufacturer’s guidance for keeping the print system reliable.
Do not assume that a tank automatically costs less overall. A low-volume user can spend more upfront and gain little practical benefit before the printer is replaced.
Choose by the work you actually do
For a basic household printer
Prioritize wireless setup, dependable scanning and copying, compact dimensions, and a straightforward refill or cartridge procedure. The ET-2800 is explicitly positioned as a wireless print/scan/copy all-in-one; compare that baseline with the exact features of any Smart Tank or MegaTank model available in your region.
For a home office
Check monthly page expectations, paper capacity, duplex behavior, document-feeder requirements, and the time required to replace supplies. A printer that saves money on ink but forces frequent tray refills or manual page turning may not be good value for office work.
For color-heavy projects
Look at color-yield estimates, supported paper types, and the cost of the correct color supply set. High coverage can reduce actual pages far below the headline estimate. If photos are central to your workflow, confirm photo-paper compatibility and quality expectations separately from office-document yield.
For mixed users sharing one printer
Choose controls and connectivity that everyone can use, and make sure replacement supplies are easy to identify. A cartridge system can be preferable when several people are uncomfortable pouring ink; a tank system can be preferable when one person manages regular refills.

- Identify the regional model number. Similar names can hide different features, bundled supplies, and warranties.
- Confirm the ink architecture. Decide whether you want refill bottles or replaceable cartridges; do not compare them as if they were the same workflow.
- Read the yield footnote. Record whether the figure is a replacement estimate, a full-bottle estimate, a standard, or a manufacturer-specific simulation.
- Check included ink and setup consumption. The first fill may not produce the same output as later replacement supplies.
- Verify functions. Confirm print, scan, copy, fax, automatic document feeder, duplex, paper size, and wireless requirements individually.
- Price the exact replacement supplies. Use the correct black and color part numbers for your country, and compare standard versus high-yield options where offered.
- Check current availability. A listing can be discontinued in one market while still described in another.
- Review support and warranty terms. These can differ by region and may affect the value of a lower-priced printer.
Setup and maintenance realities
Tank-printer setup
Follow the model’s setup sequence exactly. Fill only the matching tank, remove seals as instructed, and allow the printer to charge the print head before judging the first pages. Expect some of the supplied ink to be used during this process. Keep bottles upright, close them promptly, and avoid topping up a color with the wrong bottle.

Cartridge replacement
Install the cartridge specified for the exact model and region. Store unopened cartridges sealed and at the orientation recommended by the manufacturer. If a cartridge appears to empty unusually quickly, check whether the printer has performed cleaning cycles or whether recent jobs used heavy color coverage before assuming a fault.
Usage habits
- Use the recommended paper for the job; absorbent or unsuitable paper can increase ink use and reduce quality.
- Print periodically if the manufacturer recommends regular use, rather than leaving the printer idle for long periods.
- Use draft or standard quality for routine text when appearance allows.
- Keep firmware and driver software current through the manufacturer’s supported process.
- Use genuine ink when reliability and print-head performance are priorities. Epson specifically recommends genuine ink and says it cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of third-party ink.
How to evaluate a fifth printer
The available documentation supports four candidates, not a reliable five-way ranking. To add a fifth model responsibly, collect the same fields for it and compare like with like:
| Evidence to collect | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact regional model and current status | Prevents recommending a discontinued or unavailable product. |
| Ink design and replacement part numbers | Distinguishes bottle tanks from cartridge systems and identifies recurring supplies. |
| Black and color yield with test method | Shows whether the number is an ISO result, a company simulation, or a broad range. |
| Functions and paper handling | Determines whether the printer fits the reader’s workflow. |
| Current printer and supply prices | Enables a local break-even calculation instead of a generic savings claim. |
| Warranty and support terms | Captures ownership value beyond ink consumption. |
Until those fields are available under comparable conditions, calling one model “number five” would suggest a precision the evidence does not provide.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Bottom line: choose the supply system first
For frequent color printing, start with a refillable tank and then select the exact model whose scanning, paper handling, connectivity, and local support meet your needs. The Epson ET-2800, Canon PIXMA G3270, and HP Smart Tank configurations illustrate that category, but their yield claims use different methods and their availability varies by country. For users who prefer sealed supplies or print less consistently, the Brother MFC-J4335DW’s standard and high-yield cartridge options provide a credible alternative without a refill-bottle workflow.
Use the manufacturer figures as planning estimates, price the supplies in your market, and base the final decision on your actual monthly pages rather than a universal “cheapest ink” label.
