The best VALORANT settings are the ones that keep the image readable and frame times consistent on your particular PC. Start with your monitor’s native resolution in fullscreen, enable multithreaded rendering when available, and use the in-game performance graphs to identify instability. Then reduce the settings Riot identifies as most demanding—shadows, effects and particles, post-processing, environment or detail quality, anti-aliasing, and textures—one group at a time. Keep VSync and any frame cap as deliberate latency choices rather than universal rules.

A reliable starting configuration

Use this baseline before making individual changes:

Option Starting choice Reason
Display mode Fullscreen Provides a consistent presentation and makes it easier to match the game to the monitor you actually use.
Resolution Monitor’s native resolution Preserves the clearest image. Lower it only when the system cannot maintain stable frame times.
Multithreaded rendering On, if the option is available Riot says it helps when the CPU is managing many renderable objects.
Graphics quality Begin at a moderate or low load, then raise options selectively Higher quality asks more of the hardware and can reduce or destabilize FPS.
VSync Test with your monitor and frame pacing It changes the relationship between rendered frames and the display refresh; there is no Riot-prescribed setting for every PC.
Audio processing Use stereo or one HRTF/spatial layer Two virtual-surround systems can process the same signal twice.

Riot’s current settings screen has reorganized sections and hover tooltips after Patch 12.07. Labels and the exact location of an option can therefore differ from older guides. If a name in this article is not visible, use the tooltip in the live client rather than assuming the setting was removed.

Set up the display for clear visibility

Choose a stable resolution and fullscreen mode

Native resolution is the clearest starting point because it maps the game image directly to the monitor’s pixel grid. Fullscreen is a sensible baseline when it is stable on your system. If the image is sharp but the game hitches, the problem is usually consistency rather than insufficient resolution; test performance before sacrificing clarity.

Lowering resolution can help when the GPU is the limiting component, but it also makes edges and distant details less defined. Make the change only after confirming that the native-resolution configuration cannot maintain acceptable frame times. Record the original value so you can restore it after testing.

Remove distracting visual work before lowering everything

Riot’s support guidance identifies shadows, effects or particles, post-processing, environment/detail/material quality, anti-aliasing, and textures as the settings to lower when performance is inconsistent. Change a few related options, enter a practice or normal match, and observe the result. If stability improves, raise one option at a time until you find the highest setting that does not make fights feel uneven.

  • Shadows: Lower first if shadow rendering is consuming performance or adding visual clutter.
  • Effects, particles, and post-processing: Reduce these when ability effects or impact effects coincide with frame-time spikes.
  • Environment, detail, or material quality: Lower them when scene complexity is the bottleneck.
  • Anti-aliasing: Reduce it if edge smoothing costs more performance than the image improvement is worth.
  • Textures: Lower them when video memory or texture handling is contributing to instability; otherwise, they may be less important than effects and shadows.

Do not change every option at once. You will lose the ability to tell which adjustment fixed a problem and may end up with a blurry image without gaining useful stability.

Use enemy highlights and a crosshair you can actually distinguish

Visibility is partly personal. Choose the enemy-highlight color and crosshair shape that remain obvious against the maps and ability effects you encounter most often. A theoretically high-contrast color is not automatically best for every player’s color perception. Test the choice in several areas and during ability-heavy scenes, not only while looking at an empty wall.

Keep the visual field calm: if a setting adds animation, glow, or particles that obscure an opponent, lower that setting before making the entire game look flat. The objective is reliable target recognition, not the lowest possible preset.

Measure smoothness instead of chasing the highest FPS number

Turn on the in-game performance statistics

  1. Open Settings in VALORANT.
  2. Go to Video, then open the Stats section.
  3. Enable the client FPS and related performance graphs so they are visible while you test.
  4. Play a repeatable scenario: move through a busy area, use several abilities, and fight when possible.
  5. Change only a small group of settings, repeat the scenario, and compare the graphs.

Average FPS can look excellent while individual frames arrive irregularly. Pay attention to frame-time behavior and the low points during fights. A slightly lower but steady result generally feels better than a very high average interrupted by visible spikes. Riot’s guidance is to lower graphics quality when the graphs show unstable client performance.

Separate client performance from network symptoms

The Stats panel can expose more than one kind of problem. A client-FPS or frame-time disturbance points toward rendering, CPU/GPU load, drivers, or background activity. A network graph disturbance can feel like a stutter even when frames are being rendered normally. Do not lower every visual setting for a connection problem; first identify which graph changes at the moment you feel the hitch.

Multithreaded rendering: the performance option to check first

Enable multithreaded rendering when the option is available for your system. Riot introduced it to improve scenes in which managing many renderable objects is the bottleneck, and qualifying systems receive it enabled by default. It is not a guarantee of a particular FPS value; its benefit depends on the CPU, GPU, scene complexity, and the rest of the system.

VSync, frame caps, and latency

What VSync changes

Riot explains that VSync controls whether Windows allows a game to render above the monitor’s refresh rate. That makes it a trade-off between presentation and latency rather than a simple quality switch. Depending on the monitor, the frame rate the PC can sustain, and the way frames are paced, enabling it can reduce visible tearing while adding delay or changing responsiveness; disabling it can reduce that delay while allowing tearing.

There is no universal Riot recommendation to leave VSync on or off. Test both states with the monitor’s actual refresh rate and the same repeatable scenario. Judge the result by perceived responsiveness, tearing, and frame-time stability—not by one short FPS reading.

Match the frame-rate goal to the display

A frame rate above the monitor’s refresh rate cannot be shown as additional complete refreshes. Conversely, a high-refresh display does not create frames that the PC cannot render. If you use a frame cap, evaluate it together with VSync, any driver-level latency feature, and the monitor’s refresh setting; changing one can alter the behavior of the others.

How much FPS and refresh rate do you need?

Target What it means Qualification
30 FPS Riot’s minimum tier A baseline for running the game, not a competitive smoothness target.
60 FPS Riot’s recommended tier A general recommendation; it does not promise 144 FPS or any other high-refresh result.
144 Hz display A useful high-refresh option when the PC can sustain a matching rate Buy or select it for the stable frame rate you already achieve, your budget, and the type of play you value.
Above 144 Hz Can present more frequent updates when the PC and game deliver them Benefits diminish if frame times are unstable or the system rarely reaches the display’s refresh rate.

Riot’s 30-FPS minimum and 60-FPS recommended figures are requirements guidance, not a promise of competitive performance at a particular refresh rate. A monitor upgrade makes sense when your current display cannot show the stable frame rate your PC already produces. If the PC itself is inconsistent, changing the monitor first will not cure the hitch.

NVIDIA has reported a specific VALORANT setup using an RTX 5080 and Reflex that exceeded 1,000 FPS at 1080p with maximum settings and measured below 3 ms of PC latency. Those are vendor-reported results for that hardware and test context, not a target that ordinary systems should expect.

Audio clarity: use one spatial-processing path

VALORANT supports stereo and mono output. Riot warns against combining the game’s HRTF with another surround-virtualization layer because the signal is processed twice. If you use HRTF, disable a second virtual-surround mode in the headset software or operating system. If you prefer external spatial processing, leave the game’s HRTF off and let that single layer handle positioning.

Why VALORANT can stutter when FPS is high

Uneven frame times

A high counter reading is an average or instantaneous value; it does not prove that every frame arrived evenly. Effects, shadows, object management, background tasks, shader work, or thermal changes can create brief spikes. Use the Stats graphs during the exact moment of the hitch. If client performance dips, lower the demanding categories in small groups and retest.

Refresh-rate and synchronization mismatch

When the game renders at a rate that does not cooperate with the monitor’s refresh cycle, tearing or uneven presentation can feel like stutter. Test VSync and any cap with the monitor set to its intended refresh rate. Keep the combination that gives you the best balance of responsiveness and consistent motion.

Driver or profile interference

Keep the graphics driver current, especially after a game or operating-system update. Also check the GPU driver’s per-game profile for overrides that force a different anti-aliasing mode, synchronization behavior, sharpening filter, or power policy. Riot advises checking for driver-profile utilities when crashes or visual problems appear. Restore VALORANT-specific overrides to application-controlled defaults while troubleshooting, then add only the settings you deliberately need.

Thermal or background-load changes

Compare a clean test session with your normal session. Close overlays, recording tools, browsers, and launchers temporarily, and watch whether the hitch disappears. If performance declines after several minutes, check temperatures, fan operation, and power-mode changes; a system that starts fast and then reduces its clocks will produce inconsistent frame times even when its peak FPS looks high.

A repeatable tuning procedure

  1. Record the baseline. Note resolution, display mode, refresh rate, VSync state, multithreaded rendering state, and the Stats graphs in a repeatable scenario.
  2. Stabilize the display. Use native resolution and fullscreen if they remain stable. Set the monitor to the refresh rate you intend to use.
  3. Enable multithreaded rendering. Retest before changing visual quality.
  4. Lower the expensive groups. Start with shadows, effects or particles, post-processing, environment/detail/material quality, anti-aliasing, and textures as indicated by the graphs.
  5. Rebuild quality selectively. Raise one option at a time until the frame-time spikes return, then keep the previous value.
  6. Test synchronization. Compare VSync states and any cap under the same fight and movement conditions.
  7. Confirm audio processing. Use stereo or one HRTF/spatial layer, never two at once.
  8. Validate in real matches. Practice mode is useful for repeatability, but final judgment must include crowded fights and ability effects.

Choosing between common setup priorities

Priority Settings approach Trade-off
Maximum clarity Native resolution, fullscreen, restrained effects and post-processing, personally readable highlight and crosshair May require lowering other quality options to keep frame times stable.
Most consistent performance Lower demanding categories first, keep multithreaded rendering enabled when stable, verify with Stats graphs Less environmental detail and fewer visual effects.
Lowest perceived latency Test VSync off and an achievable frame-rate target with the monitor at its intended refresh rate Possible tearing or less even presentation.
Least tearing Test VSync on and evaluate pacing at the monitor’s refresh rate May add latency or reduce responsiveness for some systems.
Best audio positioning Choose stereo or one HRTF/spatial implementation Changing processing layers may require retraining your directional cues.

When an upgrade is justified

First determine whether the limitation is the PC or the display. If the PC consistently renders more frames than the monitor can show and frame times remain stable, a higher-refresh display can make motion easier to follow. If the PC cannot sustain the display’s refresh rate, upgrade or tune the rendering side first. Resolution also matters: higher resolution increases the work required from the GPU, while CPU-side object management can remain the bottleneck in busy scenes.

Do not use a vendor’s peak benchmark as a purchase promise. The RTX 5080 example above was measured at 1080p with maximum settings and Reflex in a specific test setup. Your CPU, drivers, thermals, background load, game patch, and resolution can produce a very different result.

Final checklist

  • Native resolution and fullscreen are stable.
  • Multithreaded rendering is enabled when available and problem-free.
  • Shadows, effects, post-processing, environment/detail/material quality, anti-aliasing, and textures were adjusted based on graphs rather than changed blindly.
  • Client FPS and frame-time behavior remain stable during fights, not just in an empty area.
  • VSync and frame caps were tested with the monitor’s real refresh rate.
  • The monitor refresh rate matches a frame rate the PC can sustain.
  • Only one spatial-audio layer is active.
  • Drivers and per-game profile overrides are not causing crashes or visual anomalies.

The practical goal is not the largest number in the FPS counter. It is a readable image, predictable frame delivery, and latency behavior that fits your monitor and playing style.
