For the clearest boss tells in Valor Mortis, start with Target Lock on, Combat Assist at Moderate or High, Instant Restart on, Quick Cast on for pressure situations, default FOV, low camera shake, visible HUD and crosshair, and a stable 60 FPS or higher. Keep enemy and sound-effects volume prominent enough to hear the metallic parry cue. These options do not extend a parry window or slow a boss; they reduce camera drift, missed inputs, visual clutter and downtime between attempts so the timing you learn is the timing in the fight.
The recommended starting profile
Use this profile for your first serious learning attempts. It is deliberately conservative: it keeps information on screen, limits camera movement and prioritizes consistent frame pacing over maximum image quality.
| Setting | Starting value | Why it helps telegraph reading | When to change it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Target Lock | On | Keeps the first-person camera attached to the active enemy and reduces camera-fighting while you learn spacing and wind-ups. | Turn it off only when lock-on prevents you from managing multiple threats or a particular encounter demands unrestricted camera control. |
| Combat Assist | Moderate; High if swings regularly whiff | Snaps melee attacks toward the target, leaving more attention for watching the boss’s animation. | Lower it if the camera or attack line is pulled away from the enemy you intended to face. |
| Instant Restart | On | Skips the death screen and returns you to the checkpoint, making each observation-and-retry loop shorter. | Leave it on during practice; disable it only if you need to review a post-death screen. |
| Quick Cast | On when using Transmutations under pressure | Removes a confirmation step when a defensive or elemental response must be immediate. | Turn it off if accidental casts consume resources during exploratory play. |
| FOV | Default initially | Preserves the game’s intended framing while you learn how its dynamic scaling handles large bosses. | Revisit after several large-boss attempts if the edges of the view still feel cramped or distorted. |
| Camera shake | Low | Reduces motion that can hide a shoulder movement, weapon trail or impact cue. | Use the lowest comfortable value if motion makes tracking difficult. |
| HUD and crosshair | Visible | Maintains stamina, health, ammunition and aiming information during a first-person fight. | Hide elements only after you can read attacks reliably without them. |
| Subtitles | Normal size unless dialogue is hard to read | Keeps spoken story information legible without enlarging unrelated interface elements. | Increase subtitle size for readability; it does not improve the attack animation itself. |
| Enemy and sound-effects volume | High enough to hear clearly | Preserves metallic parry and enemy audio cues. | Reduce ambience or other channels first if they mask combat sounds. |
Apply the profile before entering a boss arena, then change one variable at a time. If you alter lock-on, FOV, camera shake and graphics simultaneously, you cannot tell which change solved (or created) the problem.
Why these settings make attacks easier to read
They improve information, not the underlying timing
The important distinction is between seeing and hearing an attack and receiving more time to answer it. No cited evidence shows that a setting lengthens a parry window, delays a hit or changes a boss’s animation speed. Target Lock, Combat Assist, camera-shake reduction, clear audio and stable frame pacing make the existing cue easier to perceive and your input more consistent.

Official launch guidance describes three separate combat outcomes. A clean parry produces a metallic clang and sets up a counter-attack. A perfect dodge creates a brief slow-motion moment. Posture is broken through hits and parries, and attacks cannot be canceled into a parry. Read those as feedback on your decision rather than as interchangeable effects.
Commit only to attacks you can finish
Connor Bridgeman, director of marketing at Lyrical Games, states: “You can’t cancel an attack animation into a parry, so never start a swing you can’t finish.” In practice, reserve enough time and stamina to complete your current strike before the next incoming hit. If you begin a long attack while a boss is already in its wind-up, the correct response may have been to wait, block or reposition rather than attempt a last-second parry.
Target Lock and Combat Assist: choosing the right balance
Target Lock on for a single boss
With lock-on enabled in first person, the camera follows the active enemy instead of drifting as you turn. This is especially useful while learning a boss because your visual attention can stay on shoulders, hands, weapon heads and stance changes. It also reduces the camera-fighting that occurs when you try to keep an enemy centered manually while preparing a parry.

Lock-on is not universally optimal. Multiple enemies, hazards outside the locked target or an attack that passes through the camera’s center can make manual control preferable. If you repeatedly lose the second threat while staring at the locked boss, unlock for that phase rather than assuming your timing is wrong.
Combat Assist at Moderate first
Combat Assist changes aim forgiveness: melee swings are guided toward the target. It does not alter when an attack can be parried. Moderate assistance is a useful baseline because it reduces whiffed attacks without taking complete control of your facing.
Raise it when attacks miss; lower it when facing is pulled
Move to High if your reticle is on the boss but swings regularly pass beside it, particularly during close-range strafing. Lower the value if an assist correction pulls your camera toward a different enemy, drags a swing away from the line you chose or makes positioning feel unpredictable. Test the new level for a full attempt rather than judging one animation.

| Your symptom | First adjustment | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You lose the boss while turning to parry. | Keep Target Lock on; lower camera shake. | Stabilizes the view before changing aim behavior. |
| Your attack visibly misses a centered boss. | Raise Combat Assist one step. | Improves tracking without claiming a larger parry window. |
| The camera snaps toward the wrong enemy. | Lower Combat Assist or unlock during add phases. | Restores manual target choice. |
| You can see the swing but react late after an input. | Check frame pacing and input comfort before changing combat settings. | Latency and dropped frames can obscure a correct read. |
FOV, camera shake and the shape of a telegraph
Start at default FOV
Valor Mortis uses dynamic FOV scaling for large bosses. Widening the base FOV before you understand that behavior can produce edge distortion or make a close enemy appear to move differently across the screen. Keep the default value through several large-boss attempts. Once you know the encounter, test a small increase or decrease and keep the value that leaves the weapon and hands easy to judge without stretching the edges.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use low camera shake for readable wind-ups
The game provides a camera-shake adjustment. Low is a practical setting when impact jolts hide a wind-up, when the view becomes uncomfortable or when a boss’s attack begins during an existing screen effect. Lowering shake does not remove the attack; it removes an avoidable layer of movement. If you still cannot identify the start of a swing, record which body part initiates it and adjust FOV only after confirming that shake is not masking it.
Keep the HUD and crosshair while learning
Use the HUD, crosshair and Show UI controls to keep combat information visible during practice. The HUD gives context for health, stamina, ammunition and resources, while the crosshair helps you judge weak-point shots. Increase subtitle size only when dialogue readability is the issue; larger subtitles do not clarify a melee wind-up.
Audio settings that reveal a parry
Set enemy and sound-effects channels high enough to hear them over ambience and music. Official tips describe a metallic clang on a clean parry. That sound is confirmation that your response met the attack’s timing; it is not a substitute for watching the wind-up, because a missed parry may have no equivalent confirmation.
If the clang disappears in a busy mix, reduce ambience before reducing enemy or effects volume. Use headphones or speakers at a comfortable level, and avoid turning every channel to maximum if clipping makes individual cues less distinct. The objective is separation: enemy movement and impact sounds should remain recognizable when the boss, your weapon and environmental effects overlap.

Graphics and frame-rate settings for reaction timing
Choose stability over a high but erratic average
Use the highest frame-rate target your hardware can hold consistently. A steady 60 FPS generally reads better for reaction timing than a higher average that repeatedly drops. If performance dips, lower ray tracing first, then shadows, and cap the frame rate instead of chasing unstable peaks. A cap that your system sustains produces more predictable frame times, which helps you associate a visual cue with a repeatable input.

What the published performance figures mean
A 2026 TechRadar hands-on review reported more than 100 FPS at 1440p with frame generation after tuning on the reviewer’s PC. That is one reviewer’s hardware result, not a universal benchmark or a guarantee for another graphics card, processor or display. Treat it as evidence that a tuned system can exceed 100 FPS, not as a requirement for parrying.
On Oct. 16, 2026, developer One More Level said in its patch notes that updating outdated GPU drivers was associated with significant performance and stability improvements. The same notes listed crash fixes and a Chapter 4 post-boss save-progression fix. Install a current driver supported by your GPU before diagnosing a frame-time problem as a combat issue, and update the game itself before repeating a corrupted progression scenario.
A practical tuning order
- Set a frame-rate cap at a level your system can hold during a boss fight, not only in an empty room.
- Disable or reduce ray tracing first if frame times spike.
- Reduce shadows next if dips continue.
- Keep the cap and test a complete attempt, watching for uneven motion rather than only the FPS counter.
- Only then adjust other visual options, because changing many settings at once hides the cause of an improvement.
Reading the boss instead of reacting to the interface
Learn one attack family at a time
During the first attempts, watch one family of attacks instead of trying to memorize an entire moveset. Note the initiating cue (a shoulder turn, weapon lift, step or sound), the point at which the hit becomes active and the recovery after it. Keep your camera still enough to see that sequence; Target Lock and low shake help, but they do not replace observation.

Assign the correct response
For each attack, decide whether it is parryable, better answered by a block or counter, or unsuitable for a parry and therefore a dodge. Do not mash a response while uncertain. A dodge’s brief slow-motion moment confirms a perfect dodge, while a metallic clang confirms a clean parry. Those outcomes help you classify the move for the next loop.
Respect stamina and animation commitment
Reserve stamina for the response you intend to use. Because an attack cannot be canceled into a parry, starting a swing at the wrong time can remove your option to answer the incoming hit. If your attempts fail while the boss’s cue is clear, change your attack cadence or spacing rather than searching for a hidden accessibility setting that does not exist.
Use the tools each boss expects
Official guidance says weak-point firearm hits refill Nephtoglobin and that each major boss rewards a different strategy. Include those actions in your learning loop when the encounter calls for them. A boss that expects weak-point shots or a Transmutation response should not be treated as a pure parry test. Quick Cast is most valuable when that defensive or elemental answer must be issued under pressure.

The five-minute boss-learning loop
- Prepare. Before entering, confirm Target Lock, Instant Restart and your chosen Combat Assist level. Verify that the HUD, crosshair and combat audio are visible and audible.
- Observe one pattern. For the first safe opportunity, watch an attack family without starting an unfinishable swing. Identify its first reliable cue.
- Choose the response. Decide in advance whether the move receives a parry, block/counter or dodge. Keep enough stamina for that action.
- Execute once. Make one deliberate input. Listen for the metallic parry clang or look for the short perfect-dodge slow motion.
- Exploit the opening. Counter after a clean parry, or use the boss’s intended weak-point, firearm or Transmutation interaction when it appears.
- Restart immediately. Instant Restart returns you to the checkpoint so the next observation is close to the last one.
- Change one variable only. If the read remains inconsistent, test frame pacing, camera shake, FOV or audio in that order before changing your build or attack plan.
This loop separates recognition errors from execution errors. If you cannot see the cue, adjust presentation. If you see it and press too early or late, keep the presentation fixed and practice the timing.
Controller versus mouse and keyboard
The settings guidance describes a high simultaneous-input load: a first-person camera, lock-on management, parry timing and left-hand Transmutations all compete for attention. It recommends a controller while acknowledging that keyboard and mouse remain playable. TechRadar’s reviewer used an Xbox Wireless Controller during more than 10 hours of PC play, making that device a reasonable accessory choice for players who want a consistent camera-and-parry layout.
| Input method | Strength for telegraph reading | Potential drawback | Who should choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Controller | Analog camera movement and close access to parry, dodge and Transmutation inputs. | Less precise rapid camera turns than a high-sensitivity mouse for some players. | Players who lose the boss while simultaneously moving, aiming and parrying. |
| Mouse and keyboard | Fast, precise camera turns and flexible key reassignment. | More simultaneous hand movement when camera, lock-on, parry and left-hand abilities are all needed. | Players already comfortable with first-person keyboard controls and custom bindings. |
There is no evidence that one device changes the boss’s timing. Choose the layout that lets you keep one finger or thumb ready for the defensive input while maintaining camera control. If you switch devices, relearn the first attack family in a low-risk attempt instead of judging the new layout during a late phase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Diagnosing inconsistent parries
The boss disappears during the wind-up
- Confirm Target Lock is on for a single-target phase.
- Set camera shake to Low.
- Return FOV to Default, especially against a large boss.
- Keep the HUD and crosshair visible until the encounter is familiar.
The input feels late even when the animation is clear
- Check for frame-rate drops during the exact attack, not only in menus.
- Use a stable cap; reduce ray tracing, then shadows.
- Update the GPU driver and game, following the Oct. 16, 2026 patch guidance.
- Check display and controller connection latency before changing Combat Assist.
Your swing misses after the parry
- Raise Combat Assist from Moderate to High and test a complete attempt.
- If the camera pulls toward another enemy, lower Combat Assist or unlock during the add phase.
- Do not interpret a missed follow-up as a parry-window problem; aim tracking and attack commitment are separate.
You hear no confirmation
- Raise enemy and sound-effects channels relative to ambience.
- Check that your output device is not applying a mode that masks transient sounds.
- Use the visual result as well: a clean parry enables a counter-attack, while a perfect dodge produces brief slow motion.
Progression breaks after a boss
If a Chapter 4 post-boss save fails to advance, install the update containing the developer’s listed save-progression fix before repeating the encounter. Do not delete a save or rebuild your settings as a first response to a known progression issue.
When to move away from the starting profile
Use more manual control after you can classify attacks
Once you can name the cue and response for an attack family, reduce Combat Assist or disable Target Lock for a controlled test if you want more freedom. Manual control can be advantageous when several enemies occupy different angles, but it adds camera work to every parry decision. Make the change because you need target choice, not because a lower assistance value is inherently more skillful.
Widen FOV only for a demonstrated visibility problem
If the boss repeatedly leaves the edge of the view despite correct spacing and low shake, try a small FOV change and retest the same attack. Dynamic scaling means a value that helps a normal-sized enemy can distort a large boss. Keep the setting that makes the initiating body movement easiest to compare across attempts.

Hide interface elements only after the fight is learned
Removing the HUD or crosshair can make a clean screen, but it also removes reference information. Learn the encounter first, then hide elements one at a time if immersion matters more than quick diagnosis. Subtitles can remain enlarged independently when dialogue readability requires it.
How to compare two profiles objectively
Do not compare settings by asking which one feels “harder.” Compare the same attack family over several restarts using the same weapon and distance. Record five practical axes:
- Camera stability: Can you keep the initiating body part in view without fighting the camera?
- Attack tracking: Does your committed swing reach the intended target?
- Frame-time consistency: Does motion remain even during effects and impact?
- Audio clarity: Can you distinguish enemy cues and the parry clang from ambience?
- Retry time: How quickly can you observe the same attack again?
A profile that scores better on these axes is more useful for learning, even if its peak FPS, visual detail or manual freedom is lower. After the attack is reliable, optimize for preference rather than continuing to change settings in search of a larger timing window.

The documented benefits are clearer information, steadier camera control, better audio separation, consistent frame pacing and faster practice loops. Official guidance supports the metallic parry cue, perfect-dodge slow motion, posture damage, weak-point Nephtoglobin refills and the rule against canceling an attack into a parry. The published material does not establish a longer parry window from any graphics, camera, assist or input setting, and it does not provide a population-wide test proving that one controller type produces better timing.
Use the settings to remove distractions, then learn the boss’s actual animation. If a cue remains unreadable after the profile and performance checks above, treat it as an encounter-specific spacing or response problem and study that attack family in isolation.
