For most shops, choose a shielded UV lamp centered around 365 nm, use it in low ambient light, and compare the fluorescence you expect on that exact currency. A bright glow is not proof that a note is genuine, and a dark note is not automatically counterfeit. UV inspection is one security-feature check; staff still need a documented process and, where risk or volume warrants it, additional white-light, magnetic or infrared checks.

The Bank of England describes approximately 365 nm as ideal for checking fluorescent features and advises against many key-fob-style LED detectors that emit above 365 nm. The Reserve Bank of Australia likewise recommends a 365 nm-centered black light and warns that some 395–400 nm LEDs are unsuitable for its banknote features. For a small till, a dedicated UV detector is usually enough. A warehouse cash office should consider a covered bench unit or a multi-feature authentication machine with current currency support.

The short answer: buy for the currency and workflow, not the brightest lamp

  • Wavelength: specify a source centered around 365 nm. This is the wavelength recommended in the Bank of England, Reserve Bank of Australia and UK government guidance cited here.
  • Viewing conditions: provide a shielded or covered viewing area and reduce surrounding light. The Reserve Bank of Australia specifically recommends low ambient lighting.
  • Inspection method: look for the expected fluorescent marks and their position, not simply whether the paper glows.
  • Coverage: confirm the currencies, denominations, series and secure documents your business actually handles. Designs and machine software change.
  • Escalation: treat UV as an aid. The European Central Bank says a device cannot replace the user’s considered judgment based on the banknote’s security features.

What a UV counterfeit detector can—and cannot—tell you

It reveals designed fluorescent features

Banknotes can contain security features that fluoresce under ultraviolet illumination. A detector makes those features easier to inspect than they are under ordinary room light. The useful question is whether the observed pattern matches the expected pattern for that currency and series: location, shape, colour and relative intensity where the issuing authority specifies them.

This is a comparison task, not a simple light-versus-no-light test. Genuine notes can differ by denomination, issue or substrate, and a note from another country may have a completely different response. Keep an official security-feature reference for every currency accepted at the till or receiving desk.

It does not issue an authenticity verdict

Counterfeiters may copy or imitate UV-visible features. The Bank of England warns that counterfeiters can copy UV features, while the ECB states that counterfeit-detection devices cannot entirely replace considered judgment. A note that fluoresces brightly can still require rejection, and a note that appears quiet can require a second inspection if the expected feature is missing or misplaced.

365 nm versus 395–400 nm: the decision that matters most

Source or wavelength guidance What the guidance says Buying implication
Approximately 365 nm The Bank of England calls a UV lamp emitting around 365 nanometres ideal for checking fluorescent features on its notes. Make 365 nm the default specification for a banknote detector.
365 nm centered The Reserve Bank of Australia recommends a UV black light centered around 365 nm and says it should be used in low ambient lighting. Check the lamp’s stated centre wavelength and provide a dim or shielded inspection area.
395–400 nm LED The Reserve Bank of Australia warns that many LEDs in this range may be unsuitable for some of its UV features. The Bank of England says key-fob-style LED devices often emit above 365 nm. Do not assume a cheap purple-looking LED will reveal the required features. Verify the wavelength before purchase.

The number printed on a package is not enough by itself. Ask the supplier for the centre wavelength, whether the output is intended for the currencies you handle, and how the viewing area controls ambient light. If a product only says “UV” or “black light” without a wavelength, it is difficult to match it to official guidance.

Which equipment type fits your operation?

Use case Recommended equipment type Checks before buying
Small shop or till 365 nm UV counterfeit detector or lamp Wavelength, viewing area, shielding, mains or battery setup, and compatibility with accepted currencies.
Warehouse receiving or cash office Larger covered UV unit or multi-feature detector Throughput, inspection ergonomics, white-light, magnetic or infrared features, maintenance and staff workflow.
Mixed banknotes and secure documents UV unit plus magnifier or a multi-feature device Document and currency coverage, expected fluorescence patterns, and whether current test results are available.
High-risk or high-volume operation Tested authentication machine with multiple sensors Current software and version, denomination coverage, false-acceptance performance and service support.

For a small shop or till

A compact detector works when one operator checks occasional notes and can pause long enough to compare a feature reference. Choose a shielded viewing area so overhead LEDs, sunlight and shop signage do not wash out the contrast. A mains-powered unit suits a fixed till; battery operation can help at a mobile or temporary point of sale, but verify the expected operating arrangement before deployment.

For a warehouse or cash office

Volume changes the design problem. A covered bench unit keeps the operator from repeatedly cupping a lamp in one hand while handling notes with the other. A multi-feature machine may add white-light, magnetic or infrared checks, reducing the need to move a suspect note between separate tools. The extra features are useful only if staff know what each check is intended to show and the machine supports the current notes in circulation.

For mixed documents

If the same station handles banknotes, passports or identity documents, pair the 365 nm source with a magnifier or a multi-feature device whose documentation explicitly covers those documents. Do not infer that a lamp suitable for one currency automatically validates every passport or note.

How to inspect a banknote with UV light

  1. Identify the item. Record or recognise the currency, denomination and series before switching on the lamp. Use the issuing authority’s current security-feature reference for that exact note.
  2. Reduce ambient light. Move to the detector’s shielded area or dim nearby lighting. The Reserve Bank of Australia recommends low ambient lighting for validating UV features.
  3. Position the note consistently. Place the note flat and view both sides if the reference calls for it. Keep the same orientation and distance each time so staff learn the expected locations.
  4. Compare the pattern. Check whether the expected fluorescent marks appear where they should, with the expected appearance. Do not accept a note solely because some part of it glows.
  5. Look for contradictions. A whole note that glows unusually, a feature in the wrong position, or a missing expected mark is a reason for a second check. Poor counterfeits can fluoresce more brightly than genuine secure documents, so brightness alone is not a pass condition.
  6. Apply other available checks. Use the machine’s white-light, magnetic or infrared functions where fitted, and inspect other security features taught for that currency. UV remains one element of the decision.
  7. Escalate consistently. Follow the business procedure for holding a suspect note, calling a supervisor and contacting the relevant currency authority or law-enforcement channel. Do not improvise a retention or reporting rule at the till.

Currency-specific guidance you should build into training

United Kingdom notes

The Bank of England says a lamp around 365 nm is ideal for checking fluorescent features on its notes. It does not advise LED key-fob-style detectors that often emit above 365 nm. Its retailer guidance also cautions that detector pens should not be used for polymer notes. A UK procedure should therefore teach the expected UV pattern for each current note and use other security checks rather than relying on a pen.

Australian banknotes

The Reserve Bank of Australia recommends a black light centered around 365 nm and specifically calls for low ambient lighting. Its warning about many 395–400 nm LEDs is important when replacing an old lamp with a small handheld device: a visible violet beam does not demonstrate that the required features are being illuminated correctly.

Euro banknotes

The European Central Bank describes detection devices as helpful to retailers and other users, but says they cannot replace the user’s considered opinion based on the banknote’s security features. A euro workflow should teach operators the expected features for the denominations handled and require a second check when the device result and the note’s other features disagree.

Indian rupee notes

Reserve Bank of India guidance calls for UV lamps or other detection machines and staff who are familiar with banknote security features. In practice, document the denominations accepted at each location, train every operator on the reference images and make the escalation path visible beside the detector.

Using UV for passports and other secure documents

The same wavelength class can support secure-document inspection, but the document reference must come from the issuing authority. UK government identity-document validation guidance recommends a 365 nm UV source, sometimes called a black light. It also notes that poor counterfeits may fluoresce more brightly than genuine documents.

Set up a separate document checklist rather than reusing the cash checklist. Record the document type and issuing country, inspect the expected fluorescent elements under controlled lighting, and then perform the other checks required by your organisation. A UV kit can assist with both cash and documents only when its physical viewing area accommodates them and staff have current references for each type.

Buying checklist for a shop or warehouse

Optical and physical specifications

  • Centre wavelength stated as approximately 365 nm.
  • Shielding or a covered viewing area that works under your actual lighting.
  • Enough surface area for the largest note or document you will inspect.
  • A stable position that leaves both hands free for repetitive checks.
  • Mains or battery operation suited to the installation, with the required power accessories.

Coverage and currency support

  • Supported currencies, denominations and note series listed by the manufacturer.
  • Document coverage stated separately if passports or identity documents are part of the workflow.
  • Current software or firmware information for machines that use programmable detection.
  • A way to obtain updated references when a central bank changes a design.

Operational and service checks

  • Throughput appropriate to your busiest receiving or till period.
  • Controls and viewing angles that reduce repeated handling and awkward wrist positions.
  • Maintenance instructions, replacement-lamp information and a service contact.
  • Independent or programme-based test information where the seller claims tested performance.
  • A written process for suspect notes, including who makes the final decision.

Staff training that prevents “the paper glows” mistakes

Start with genuine reference notes or authorised training material for every currency and denomination in scope. Demonstrate the detector in the lighting where it will actually be used. Each trainee should practise identifying the location and appearance of expected features, then practise stopping when a note does not match.

Use a short competency checklist: identify the note, control the lighting, inspect the expected UV pattern, perform the additional checks, and escalate a contradiction. Supervisors should observe new operators during real receiving or till work rather than treating a one-time demonstration as permanent competence. When a currency design changes, repeat the briefing and replace obsolete reference images.

Warehouse workflow for higher volume

  1. Designate a station. Put the covered detector, currency references and escalation form together at receiving or in the cash office.
  2. Separate accepted from suspect items. Use clearly labelled trays so a note awaiting a second check cannot return accidentally to the cash drawer.
  3. Set a sampling or full-check rule. Decide whether every note, every high-risk denomination or a defined receiving batch receives UV inspection. Record the rule in the operating procedure.
  4. Add a second operator for exceptions. A disagreement between the UV result and another security feature should trigger a supervisor review, not a rushed acceptance.
  5. Audit the process. Review training records, machine settings, currency coverage and service status whenever a new note series enters circulation or the detector is moved.

Troubleshooting common inspection problems

Nothing appears under the lamp

First check the ambient light, the note orientation and whether the currency is expected to show a feature on that side. Confirm that the lamp is the specified wavelength and that the unit is powered correctly. If the problem affects known genuine reference notes, stop relying on the unit until it has been checked or serviced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The whole note glows

Excessive overall fluorescence can result from a mismatch between the note and the reference, unsuitable wavelength, high ambient light or a suspect note. Repeat the inspection in the shielded area and compare with a known reference. Do not convert brightness into an automatic counterfeit verdict.

A handheld LED gives inconsistent results

Many 395–400 nm devices may be unsuitable for some features, and the Bank of England warns that key-fob-style LEDs often emit above 365 nm. Replace uncertainty with a detector whose centre wavelength is documented around 365 nm and whose viewing conditions can be controlled.

Staff disagree about a note

Require the second operator to follow the same sequence and use the same currency reference. If the disagreement remains, isolate the note and escalate according to the written procedure. The ECB’s warning about considered judgment is especially relevant when a device result conflicts with other security features.

When a multi-feature machine is worth the extra complexity

A single UV lamp is appropriate when the task is occasional and operators can compare features carefully. A multi-feature machine becomes more attractive when the operation handles large volumes, several currencies or repeated receiving checks, or when white-light, magnetic and infrared inspection can be integrated into one station. The trade-off is governance: more sensors mean more settings, more coverage questions and more training.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before purchase, ask for the exact denominations and series tested, the current software version, the supplier’s test documentation and the process for updates. A machine that was suitable for an older note design may require a software or reference update when the issuing authority changes security features.

Decision framework

  • Choose a 365 nm lamp: when your shop needs a straightforward, low-volume UV check and you can provide a controlled viewing area.
  • Choose a covered bench detector: when warehouse staff handle batches and need hands-free, repeatable positioning.
  • Choose a UV-plus-magnifier setup: when the same station checks banknotes and secure documents but does not need automated multi-sensor decisions.
  • Choose a tested multi-feature machine: when risk, volume or currency diversity justifies white-light, magnetic or infrared checks and you can maintain current software and staff training.

In every case, specify the currency and document types first, require approximately 365 nm output, control ambient light, train operators to recognise expected patterns and keep UV within a broader authenticity procedure.
