Best overall: a refurbished Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q or M720 Tiny with a Core i5-8500T, 16GB of RAM and an SSD. The Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro and HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini are equally sensible alternatives when their condition, included adapter and price are better. All three are one-liter business PCs built around 35W-class processors, so they provide useful container capacity without the heat and fan demand of larger desktop systems.

Buy the exact configuration rather than relying on the model name. Confirm the 35W T-series CPU, at least 16GB of memory, SSD health, Ethernet, the correct power brick and a usable return period. Published idle readings of 11–14W for representative TinyMiniMicro systems are encouraging, but they are configuration-dependent rather than guarantees for every used machine.

What makes a good quiet Docker server?

A Docker host that runs continuously has different priorities from a bargain office PC. You need enough simultaneous CPU threads for containers, sufficient memory for caches and databases, storage that will tolerate constant reads and writes, and cooling that can remove heat without an irritating fan ramp. A small business desktop is attractive because corporate refreshes release large numbers of repairable, standardized systems with replaceable SODIMMs and SSDs.

The most useful target is a 35W Intel T-series processor from the eighth-generation era. That power class keeps sustained heat manageable in a one-liter chassis while still offering six physical cores on the common Core i5-8500T. A 65W desktop CPU can work, but it leaves less thermal headroom and can make a compact fan audible during builds, indexing or transcoding.

Docker Engine itself is not tied to a particular vendor. Docker’s Ubuntu documentation requires a supported 64-bit Ubuntu release and supports x86_64 (also called amd64), along with armhf, arm64, s390x and ppc64le. These mini PCs use x86_64, so they fit the standard Linux container ecosystem and avoid the image-compatibility issues that can arise on a different CPU architecture.

Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q or M720 Tiny

Why it is the default recommendation

Lenovo’s M720 Tiny datasheet describes an eighth- or ninth-generation 35W platform, two DDR4-2666 SODIMM slots, M.2 storage, a 2.5-inch bay and several adapter capacities. That combination gives a Docker host room to grow: one drive can hold the operating system and container data while the second bay provides a place for backups or a separate data volume, subject to the exact caddy and cable supplied.

The Core i5-8500T is the most balanced configuration. Its six cores and six threads handle several light web services, monitoring, a reverse proxy and a small database without the extra heat of a higher-power desktop chip. Lenovo’s PSREF lists a 2.1GHz base clock, up to 3.5GHz boost and integrated UHD 630 graphics. The integrated GPU is useful for console output and hardware-accelerated workloads that support it, but do not assume every media application will use it automatically.

What to inspect in a listing

  • Confirm the processor suffix ends in T; an apparently similar non-T desktop chip belongs to a higher power class.
  • Ask whether the 2.5-inch caddy, SATA cable and mounting bracket are included if you plan to add a second drive.
  • Check whether the seller supplies the 65W, 90W or 135W adapter specified for that unit. A missing or mismatched brick can erase the expected efficiency advantage.
  • Request a photo of the BIOS summary or a system-information screen showing the exact CPU and installed memory.
  • Inspect the vent openings for dust and ask whether the fan makes a grinding or bearing noise when the system warms up.

Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro

The OptiPlex 7060 Micro is the closest Dell equivalent to the Lenovo recommendation. Dell’s guide lists a Core i5-8500T with six cores, six threads, boost up to 3.5GHz and a 35W rating. That is enough parallel CPU capacity for a small collection of always-on containers while keeping cooling requirements modest.

Unlike a new retail product with one fixed specification, used 7060 Micro listings can differ substantially. Memory size, SSD type, Wi-Fi, the external adapter and the vertical stand or mounting hardware may all be optional. Before paying, obtain a written configuration rather than assuming that every 7060 Micro includes an NVMe drive or a particular amount of RAM.

When the Dell is the better buy

Choose it over the Lenovo when the unit has demonstrably cleaner vents, a newer SSD, 16GB or 32GB of RAM already installed, or a longer return period. Those practical differences affect uptime and noise more than a small variation in benchmark speed. A complete, tested system is usually a better server than a cheaper bare chassis that needs an adapter, caddy and memory immediately.

HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini

HP’s EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini service guide includes a 35W Core i5-8500T configuration, placing it in the same useful thermal class as the Lenovo and Dell. Its business-oriented construction and replaceable components make it suitable for a continuously running Ubuntu host, provided the particular refurbisher has serviced the fan and storage properly.

HP listings deserve especially careful configuration checks. Verify the installed CPU rather than accepting a title that merely says EliteDesk 800 G4, then confirm RAM capacity, SSD interface, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and the power adapter. Ask whether a BIOS administrator password remains set; an inherited password can prevent changes to boot order, virtualization or security settings.

When to select the HP

The HP is a sensible choice when it is the cleanest available unit or includes a better warranty. For Docker, reliability and memory capacity matter more than the logo on the front. If two systems have the same 35W i5-8500T and SSD class, choose the one with documented testing, a return window and the least dust.

Choose the right CPU and memory

35W T-series versus 65W desktop processors

A 35W T-series chip is the safe default for a quiet one-liter server. It reduces sustained heat during image builds and background jobs, giving the small blower more time at low speed. A 65W processor may offer more peak performance, but the extra thermal load can increase fan noise and wall consumption. Unless you know that your workload needs the additional performance, stay with the 35W configuration.

How much RAM?

Install 16GB as the practical minimum for a multi-container host. That leaves room for Ubuntu, Docker’s page cache and several services without constant swapping. Select 32GB when you expect a database, search or indexing service, media applications, build jobs or many containers running concurrently. The M720 Tiny supports up to two DDR4-2666 SODIMMs; check the exact upgrade limits and installed modules on Dell and HP units before ordering memory.

Buy matched modules when possible and test the completed machine before deploying data. A seller may advertise a model family while shipping one 8GB module, leaving a second slot empty. That is not a problem if you budget for an upgrade, but it should be reflected in the purchase price.

Storage, networking and expansion

SSD first

Require an SSD rather than a mechanical disk. Container layers, package updates, databases and log files produce small random operations that feel slow and noisy on a hard drive. Confirm whether the SSD is M.2 or 2.5-inch SATA, its capacity and its health or remaining-life reading. A low-cost used SSD with little remaining endurance is a false bargain if it fails after the host has accumulated application data.

Featuring 1x HDMI 2.0 port, 1x DisplayPort, and 1x Full-Function Type-C port, the E5 outputs true 4K@60Hz resolution to three monitors at once. This multi-screen setup eliminates constant window-switching for traders, programmers, and office workers.
  • 【Dual 2.5GbE LAN Ports for Advanced Networking】 Experience fast wired network transmission speeds up to 2500Mbps without lagging or buffering. The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

Use the M.2 device for the operating system and active container data when it is healthy. If the chassis includes the 2.5-inch bay and the caddy, a second SATA SSD can hold backups or less frequently accessed media. Keep backups on another system as well; two drives in one tiny PC do not protect against theft, power damage or a failed motherboard.

Ethernet and wireless

Prefer wired Ethernet for a server. It provides predictable latency and avoids the reconnect behavior that can interrupt pulls, updates or remote administration. Check that the Ethernet port is present and functional, and confirm whether Wi-Fi is included only if you genuinely need it. A missing wireless card is harmless for a wired server, while a missing Ethernet port or damaged jack is a serious limitation.

Mounting and ports

Ask whether a vertical stand, monitor bracket or other mounting hardware is included. Mounting the PC where air can circulate helps noise, but do not cover the intake or exhaust. Count the USB ports and display outputs only if your specific containers or maintenance workflow require them; Docker itself does not need a particular video connector.

Power draw and fan noise

A measured-idle roundup reports 11–14W for representative Lenovo M720q Tiny, HP EliteDesk 705 G4 Mini and Dell OptiPlex 3050 Micro configurations. These are secondary measurements accessed in 2026, not standardized guarantees for the three recommended models. RAM capacity, SSD type, BIOS settings, USB devices, adapter efficiency and background container activity all change the reading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no authoritative model-by-model dBA testing in the available specifications. Therefore, treat quiet operation as a condition you create rather than a number printed on a product page:

  • Choose the 35W CPU configuration and keep the original, correctly sized adapter.
  • Clean dust from the vents and heatsink before installing containers.
  • Use an SSD and disconnect unnecessary USB devices.
  • Leave clearance around the intake and exhaust, especially when using a bracket or shelf.
  • Check fan behavior at idle and during a sustained CPU or disk task while the return period is still active.

The wall-meter reading after setup is more useful than a seller’s generic wattage claim. Record idle draw with Docker running, then observe the host during your busiest expected task. A brief increase while updating images is normal; a fan that stays at high speed for a light workload suggests dust, poor thermal contact, an unsuitable CPU or a failing fan.

Used-PC buying checklist

  1. Identify the processor. Request the exact model and suffix. For this shortlist, the Core i5-8500T or a comparable 35W T-series part is the target.
  2. Set the memory floor. Buy 16GB minimum, or price a 32GB upgrade for databases, indexing, media services and larger container sets.
  3. Confirm the drive. Require an SSD and ask whether it is M.2 or 2.5-inch SATA. Request a health or remaining-life report when available.
  4. Check accessories. Verify the correct power adapter, storage caddy, SATA cable, Wi-Fi card, Ethernet port and mounting bracket.
  5. Check firmware access. Ask whether a BIOS administrator password is set and whether virtualization settings can be changed.
  6. Ask about service history. Dust removal, fan condition and SSD wear dominate the reliability of a used mini PC.
  7. Insist on a return period or warranty. You need time to test idle power, fan noise, memory stability and storage health.
  8. Budget the total cost. Include memory, a replacement SSD, a caddy and shipping rather than comparing bare-unit prices.

Prepare the machine before Docker

1. Inspect and clean

Power the unit off, remove the cover according to the service instructions for its model and clear dust without forcing debris deeper into the fan. Check that the heatsink is firmly seated and that no cable touches the fan blades. Reassemble the cover before measuring noise; an open chassis can produce misleading airflow and acoustic results.

2. Verify firmware settings

Enter the firmware setup and confirm that the installed CPU and memory match the listing. Enable the virtualization option if it is disabled, set the intended boot device and remove any unknown administrator password with the seller’s help. Record the original settings before changing power-management options so you can restore them if stability changes.

3. Install a supported 64-bit Ubuntu release

Use a 64-bit edition supported by Docker Engine and install it to the SSD. Give the host a predictable hostname and, preferably, a reserved address on your router or a static address managed consistently with your network. Apply Ubuntu updates before placing services on the machine, then reboot and confirm that Ethernet reconnects correctly.

Install and verify Docker Engine

Docker’s documented Ubuntu method uses Docker’s apt repository rather than an arbitrary third-party package. Follow the repository instructions for the exact Ubuntu release installed on the mini PC, then verify the daemon with the official hello-world image. The verification command is:

sudo docker run hello-world

A successful run downloads the image, creates a container and prints a confirmation message. If it fails, check network connectivity, DNS resolution, the Docker service status and whether the account has permission to access the daemon. Do not start troubleshooting application containers until this basic test succeeds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After verification, create a simple directory layout for compose files, persistent volumes and backups. Keep application data outside disposable container layers, document which ports each service needs and update one stack at a time. A small server is easier to recover when every volume and environment variable is recorded in a readable file.

Firewall and published-port safety

Docker warns that published container ports can bypass rules configured only in ufw or firewalld. If you expose a service with a host port, define the intended allow and deny policy through Docker’s DOCKER-USER chain, which is evaluated before Docker’s own forwarding rules. Limit administration interfaces to your local network or VPN, avoid publishing databases directly to the internet and test from a second device.

Keep a written inventory of each published port, its container and the network that should reach it. When a service is removed, delete its port mapping and verify that the port is no longer reachable. This is more reliable than assuming that stopping a container automatically restores every firewall expectation.

Keep the host quiet and dependable

Control workload spikes

Image builds, search indexing, video conversion and database maintenance can use every core and raise fan speed. Schedule heavy jobs outside the periods when silence matters, and assign sensible CPU or memory limits to non-critical containers. Avoid unlimited log growth: rotate logs and monitor free space so the SSD is not forced into sustained cleanup activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitor temperature, storage and power

Watch CPU temperature and fan behavior during the first week, then check periodically. Review SSD health and remaining life, especially on an older drive. Measure wall power after adding USB devices or a second drive; the published 11–14W range can move upward as hardware and workload change.

Plan updates and recovery

Apply Ubuntu and image updates in a maintenance window. Export configuration, back up persistent volumes to another device and keep a tested restore procedure. A return period is useful only before deployment; after the machine becomes important, backups and replacement parts are what reduce downtime.

Troubleshooting common problems

The fan is loud at idle

  • Confirm that the system is using the intended 35W T-series CPU.
  • Clean the intake, exhaust and heatsink, then check whether the fan bearing is noisy.
  • Remove unnecessary USB devices and compare wall draw with Docker temporarily stopped.
  • Check for a runaway container, continuous image rebuild or log file that is keeping the CPU or SSD busy.
  • If the seller’s return window is open, exchange a unit with persistent mechanical noise rather than attempting an uncertain repair.

Containers are slow or restart

  • Check available memory and swap activity; 8GB is often quickly exhausted by databases and indexing services.
  • Inspect SSD health and free space.
  • Confirm that the host is not throttling because of dust or blocked airflow.
  • Review container logs and resource limits before replacing hardware.

A service works locally but not remotely

Confirm the container’s published port, host address and intended firewall policy. Remember that Docker-published ports may bypass ufw or firewalld rules; place the access policy in the DOCKER-USER chain and test from the network where the service should be available.

Estimate electricity cost

Use your own meter reading and tariff rather than a generic annual-cost claim. The calculation is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
annual cost = watts ÷ 1000 × 24 × 365 × electricity price per kWh

For example, a sustained 12W reading represents 105.12kWh per year before considering shutdowns or workload changes. Multiply that energy figure by the price on your bill. Measure separately at idle and during your busiest routine because an 11–14W representative idle result does not describe compilation, indexing or media processing.

Which mini PC should you buy?

Choose the Lenovo M720q or M720 Tiny when

You want the clearest documented upgrade path: two DDR4-2666 SODIMM slots, M.2 plus 2.5-inch storage options, multiple adapter capacities and a compact 179 × 36.5 × 182.9mm chassis. It is the easiest recommendation when the seller provides a healthy SSD, 16GB or more of RAM and a return period.

Choose the Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro when

A specific listing offers better condition, memory, storage or warranty than the Lenovo units available to you.
