The best choice changes with your price ceiling, the exact model year and trim, condition, service history, safety record, and need for features such as all-wheel drive. iSeeCars’ 2026 rankings put the Honda CR-V first below $25,000 and $30,000, while the Hyundai Tucson ranks first below $20,000. That is a useful market signal, not a universal winner: a carefully inspected Tucson can be a better buy than a neglected rival.

Keep the Tucson in your search when your ceiling is near $20,000; excluding it automatically could remove the strongest value in that particular price band. Above that point, the CR-V deserves the first comparison, while the CX-5 has unusually strong reliability-ranking evidence at the 2025 model year.

How the ranking evidence should influence a used-car decision
iSeeCars’ price-tier rankings
iSeeCars says its 2026 used-car rankings analyze more than 12 million new and used vehicles and combine its vehicle studies with NHTSA safety ratings. It also says its safety score incorporates the latest IIHS Top Safety Pick information. The overview gives the Honda CR-V an 8.5/10 overall score and places the 2021 CR-V first under $25,000; the Tucson is first under $20,000. These are statistical rankings across a market, not a prediction that every CR-V or Tucson listing will be dependable.

Reliability scores under $30,000
In iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis of used small SUVs priced below $30,000, the 2023 Honda CR-V is listed first with an average used price of $29,478 and a reliability score of 8.0/10. The 2025 Mazda CX-5 follows with an average used price of $28,683 and the same 8.0/10 reliability score. The analysis covers vehicles one to six years old in the relevant price band. A score describes the model-year group used in the study; it does not reveal whether a particular car was serviced on schedule, damaged, modified, or driven harshly.
What a ranking cannot tell you
- Whether the advertised vehicle has a clean title, flood damage, accident repairs, or odometer discrepancies.
- Whether scheduled maintenance was completed or deferred.
- Whether an open recall applies to that vehicle identification number (VIN).
- Whether tires, brakes, suspension, air conditioning, and electronics are near replacement.
- Whether the exact equipment and cargo space suit your daily use.
Use the rankings to decide which listings deserve attention, then evaluate the individual vehicle.
Used-price context: what the historical numbers mean
IIHS and Consumer Reports published a joint used-vehicle recommendation list on May 22, 2024. Its Kelley Blue Book estimates were calculated from April 19, 2024 data, rounded to the nearest $100, and assumed good condition, typical mileage, and a private-party sale. They are historical reference points, not current asking prices or guaranteed transaction values.

A lower sticker price is not automatically cheaper ownership. A vehicle needing tires, brakes, a battery, fluids, or deferred maintenance can erase an apparent bargain. Compare the total amount needed to put each candidate into dependable daily service.
Honda CR-V: the strongest all-round alternative
Why it leads the shortlist
The CR-V has the clearest budget-tier evidence in the current data: iSeeCars places the 2021 model first under $25,000 and the model first under both $25,000 and $30,000 in its 2026 used-small-SUV rankings. The 2023 CR-V also leads iSeeCars’ under-$30,000 reliability list with an 8.0/10 score and a cited average used price of $29,478.

What to verify
Check the exact model year’s IIHS and NHTSA results, because the 2023 reliability result does not establish safety performance for every CR-V generation. Inspect the VIN, maintenance records, title history, tires, brakes, fluid leaks, warning lights, and operation of every driver-assistance feature. The ranking cannot tell you whether a particular CR-V received proper service.
Toyota RAV4: a durable benchmark worth price-checking
Why it belongs in the comparison
The RAV4 is included in the IIHS/Consumer Reports used-vehicle recommendations from the 2017 model year onward, with a historical average price estimate of $14,700 under that program’s assumptions. Its long-running presence in the compact-SUV market makes it a natural cross-shop, but the cited material does not assign it a single overall ranking victory against every Tucson year.

Best fit
Consider a RAV4 when local supply is strong, the vehicle has complete records, or its equipment and drivetrain match your needs better than similarly priced alternatives. Confirm whether the listing is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and compare the tire condition and service history rather than assuming a badge guarantees lower ownership costs.
Safety and condition checks
Use the IIHS and NHTSA databases for the specific RAV4 model year. Do not carry a current-model safety award backward to a 2017–2020 vehicle without checking that year’s result. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important when a higher-mileage RAV4 is priced substantially below comparable listings.
Mazda CX-5: the reliability-and-driving alternative
Evidence for newer examples
iSeeCars lists the 2025 CX-5 second in its 2026 under-$30,000 reliability ranking, with an 8.0/10 reliability score and a cited average used price of $28,683. The IIHS/Consumer Reports recommendation program covers CX-5 model years 2021–23 and gives that group a historical average price estimate of $17,600.

Who benefits most
The CX-5 is a logical choice for a buyer who is willing to spend more than the lowest Tucson price tier and wants to weigh reliability evidence alongside driving feel, cabin finish, and available equipment. Those qualitative priorities must be checked on the exact year and trim; the cited rankings do not establish a universal winner for ride comfort, fuel economy, cargo space, or ownership cost.
Do not confuse model-year evidence
The 8.0/10 score belongs to the 2025 CX-5 in iSeeCars’ analysis. It should not be quoted as a reliability rating for every older CX-5. For a 2021–23 vehicle, review its own maintenance and safety records and inspect for wear consistent with mileage and use.
Subaru Forester: a practical option for traction-focused shoppers
Why it remains a candidate
The Forester is one of the five credible Tucson alternatives identified for this comparison. Current IIHS class information marks 2026 Forester models as Top Safety Pick+, but that current result does not certify earlier used Foresters. Buyers should treat it as a reason to check the model’s history, not as a substitute for checking the year on the lot.
Questions to answer before buying
- Does the exact vehicle have the drivetrain, ground clearance, and tire setup required for your winter roads?
- Are all four tires closely matched in brand, size, tread depth, and wear?
- Are maintenance records complete, particularly for fluids, brakes, suspension, and any drivetrain service specified for that year?
- Do the IIHS and NHTSA results for the exact model year meet your safety requirements?
The consulted sources do not provide a Forester price-tier or reliability score that can be fairly compared numerically with the CR-V and CX-5 figures above. Make the decision using the individual car’s condition and the current local price.
Kia Sportage: value-oriented, but verify the specific year
Price and recommendation evidence
The IIHS/Consumer Reports program includes the Kia Sportage from the 2020 model year onward and gives it a historical average price estimate of $14,400 under its April 2024 assumptions. That makes it a useful lower-budget alternative to investigate, especially when a comparable CR-V or RAV4 costs more locally.

What the number does not establish
The $14,400 figure is not a current market price, and the recommendation list’s starting year is not a declaration that every 2020-or-newer Sportage is equally safe or reliable. Check the exact year’s crash-test results, recall status, maintenance records, title, and physical condition. Compare equipment carefully: two Sportages with the same model name can differ substantially by trim and drivetrain.
Where the Hyundai Tucson still makes sense
Buying an alternative should not mean dismissing the Tucson. iSeeCars places the 2021 Tucson first among used small SUVs under $20,000 in its 2026 ranking. If your budget is below that threshold, a well-maintained Tucson with a clean history may offer better value than a rival with accident damage or missing service records.
Keep the Tucson on the worksheet when it is materially newer, has fewer owners, includes the equipment you need, or passes inspection while a competing vehicle does not. The right comparison is vehicle against vehicle, not badge against badge.

IIHS ratings can change by model year, build date, trim, and test protocol. The current IIHS small-SUV table identifies 2026 CX-5 and Forester models as Top Safety Pick+, and displays ratings for the 2027 CR-V. Those current results are not valid substitutes for the ratings of an older used vehicle.

- Check whether the rating applies to the same body style and equipment, rather than a related or newer redesign.
- Review recalls and manufacturer safety campaigns by VIN before signing paperwork.
- Ask the seller to demonstrate that airbags, cameras, sensors, warning lights, and seat-belt systems function normally.
Safety ratings are one part of the decision. A repaired crash structure, flood exposure, or malfunctioning restraint system can make an otherwise highly rated model a poor purchase.

How to compare two listings step by step
1. Set a total purchase ceiling
Decide how much you can spend after taxes, registration, inspection, immediate maintenance, and insurance. Use current local asking prices for the shortlist; the April 2024 estimates above are historical context only.
2. Match like with like
Compare similar model years, mileage, drivetrain, trim level, ownership count, and title status. A newer base-trim CX-5 is not directly equivalent to an older, fully equipped CR-V, and an all-wheel-drive vehicle may carry different maintenance and tire requirements than a front-wheel-drive example.
3. Screen the VIN and documents
- Confirm the VIN on the dashboard, door label, title, and seller paperwork.
- Check for open recalls and campaign completion.
- Review title history, reported collisions, auction records, and mileage consistency.
- Request invoices or digital records for scheduled maintenance and major repairs.
4. Inspect and drive the vehicle
Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection before committing. The inspection should cover the body and paint for inconsistent repairs, underbody and suspension damage, fluid leaks, brakes, tires, battery, cooling system, exhaust, steering, lights, climate control, infotainment, and driver-assistance alerts. During the drive, note cold-start behavior, transmission operation, braking, steering pull, vibration, tire noise, and warning messages.
5. Price the immediate work
Get written estimates for anything due soon. Subtract that cost from the apparent price advantage, then compare the adjusted totals. A vehicle that needs four tires and brake work may no longer be the cheaper option.
6. Walk away when evidence is incomplete
Decline a listing when the seller will not provide the VIN, permits an independent inspection, or can explain major gaps in ownership and maintenance. Another CR-V, RAV4, CX-5, Forester, Sportage, or Tucson is preferable to accepting an unverified risk.
Using the 2022 AWD comparison responsibly
A 2023 MotorTrend comparison evaluated seven all-wheel-drive trims from the 2022 model year, including the Tucson and several alternatives. It can help you understand how those specific trims were compared for driving and equipment, but it does not establish used-car reliability, current prices, or the condition of an individual 2022 vehicle. When using that review, identify the tested trim and year in your notes and avoid applying its conclusions to a different powertrain or later redesign.
