For a 2.5-inch SATA drive, the compact Sabrent EC-SS31 is a straightforward adapter; for a 3.5-inch desktop drive, choose a powered option such as StarTech’s USB312SAT3. The critical distinction is power: 3.5-inch drives need an external supply, while many 2.5-inch drives can draw power over USB. Both adapters list USB link rates up to 10Gbps, but that specification is not a promise of real-world copy speed.

Which USB-to-SATA adapter fits your drive?

A USB-to-SATA adapter lets you connect a bare SATA hard drive or SSD to a computer’s USB port. Match the adapter to the drive’s physical size and SATA interface before comparing speed or features. A 2.5-inch-only adapter will not connect a 3.5-inch desktop drive.

Option Documented drive fit Published specifications Best suited to
StarTech USB312SAT3 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA HDDs and SSDs USB up to 10Gbps; SATA III up to 6Gbps; UASP, TRIM, S.M.A.R.T. and 4Kn support; universal AC adapter included. StarTech says it tested the adapter with drives up to 6TB. One adapter for different drive sizes, including 3.5-inch drives that need external power. StarTech product specifications
Sabrent EC-SS31 2.5-inch SATA HDDs and SSDs only USB 3.1 Type-A; stated USB rate up to 10Gbps; UASP support. A compact adapter for a 2.5-inch drive when the host has USB-A. It is not documented for 3.5-inch drives. Sabrent product page

These are specification-based choices, not a controlled head-to-head ranking. Manufacturer pages publish interface capabilities, not comparable measured transfer results.

Does a 3.5-inch hard drive need a powered adapter?

Yes. A 3.5-inch drive needs external power, so choose an adapter supplied with a suitable power source. The StarTech USB312SAT3 includes a universal power supply; check that the package and plug are appropriate for your region. StarTech says USB power can be sufficient for a 2.5-inch drive, but use the included supply if a 2.5-inch drive requires additional power. See StarTech’s power and compatibility details.

SABRENT USB 3.0 to 2.5in SATA Adapter Cable for SSD & HDD, UASP (EC-SSHD)
  • 2.5" SATA Drives Only — SSD & HDD: Compatible with 2.5" SATA I/II/III SSDs and laptop HDDs. NOT compatible with: M.2 NVMe drives, M.2 SATA drives, 3.5" desktop HDDs, or slim SATA optical drives. Verify your drive has a standard 2.5" SATA connector before purchasing.
  • USB Bus-Powered — No Adapter Needed for Most Drives: Powers most 2.5" SATA SSDs and laptop HDDs directly from USB. Note: Some older or high-capacity 2.5" mechanical HDDs may draw more current than a single USB port provides — if a drive fails to spin up, try a powered USB hub or a different USB 3.0 port.
  • USB 3.0 (USB-A) — 5Gbps with UASP: Host connection is USB Type-A (USB-A). Computers with only USB-C ports require a separate USB-C to USB-A adapter (not included). UASP support for faster transfers on compatible systems.
  • Plug & Play: No drivers required; hot-swappable design for quick access to drives on Windows, macOS, and Linux
  • Usage Note: Not intended for all configurations such as system boot drives or certain embedded systems; compatibility may vary by device

How fast will files transfer?

The StarTech USB312SAT3 lists a USB interface rate up to 10Gbps and SATA III up to 6Gbps. Sabrent lists up to 10Gbps for the EC-SS31. Those are interface ceilings, not expected file-copy speeds. Actual performance can be limited by the drive, the computer’s USB port, the cable, the adapter’s bridge electronics, the type of files being transferred, or another bottleneck.

Both adapters list UASP support, a compatibility feature worth noting when comparing USB storage products. The cited product information does not establish a measured speed increase for either model, so treat it as a supported feature rather than a guaranteed performance gain. No comparable benchmark is available here to establish which adapter is faster.

SABRENT USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station, 2.5/3.5in (EC-DFLT)
  • SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
  • USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
  • REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
  • 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
  • PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.

When is an enclosure a better choice?

A bare adapter is useful for temporary access to a drive, troubleshooting, or swapping among drives. If you want the drive housed for regular use, consider a SATA enclosure instead. The cited UGREEN 2.5-inch enclosure supports SATA drives, USB 3.0, a stated rate up to 5Gbps and UASP; it houses the drive rather than connecting it with an exposed adapter cable. UGREEN 2.5-inch enclosure details.

For a 3.5-inch drive, UGREEN’s cited enclosure lists a rate up to 5Gbps and UASP, and its supplied power must be connected. UGREEN 3.5-inch enclosure details.

Check compatibility before connecting

  • Confirm the drive is SATA and check whether it is 2.5 or 3.5 inches.
  • Match the adapter’s host connector to an available USB port. The Sabrent EC-SS31 is listed with USB Type-A; check the StarTech package and host connection details for your setup.
  • For a 3.5-inch drive, confirm that an external power supply is included and can be used in your region.
  • For a large drive, compare its capacity with the manufacturer’s current documentation. StarTech’s stated testing up to 6TB applies to that product and is not a general SATA capacity limit.
  • Check current model documentation and package contents, which can vary by region or revision.
