The Google Pixel 10a is the clearest under-$500 pick in a current 2026 buying guide: Tom’s Guide names it its best cheap phone overall and lists it at $499. That is an attributed editorial recommendation, not our hands-on verdict. Samsung’s Galaxy A37 5G is a strong alternative at its announced $449.99 unlocked starting price. Prices and stock can change, so confirm the exact unlocked model and carrier support before ordering.
Best unlocked phone under $500: Google Pixel 10a
Tom’s Guide’s 2026 best-cheap-phones guide names the Pixel 10a its best cheap phone overall and reports a $499 price. Its separate best-phone guide also lists the phone at $499. Tom’s Guide reports a 15-hour, 16-minute result in its battery test; that is one publication’s test result, not a promise of how long the phone will last for every owner. See Tom’s Guide’s best-cheap-phones guide and its 2026 best-phone guide.
The buying guide lists a 6.3-inch display, 8GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of storage, and rear cameras with 48MP main and 13MP ultrawide sensors, plus a 13MP front camera. It says the phone uses Google’s Tensor G4 chip, and its best-phone guide reports an IP68 rating and seven years of software and security updates. These are details reported for the Pixel 10a in those guides; confirm the exact U.S. model and current terms with the seller before purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOne trade-off noted by Tom’s Guide is that the Pixel 10a’s camera hardware did not receive a major upgrade relative to its predecessor. If you are choosing between the Pixel 10a and the older Pixel 9a, do not assume that specifications or promises announced for the Pixel 9a automatically apply to the 10a.

How the under-$500 alternatives compare
The three candidates below do not have a consistent independent side-by-side test in the cited sources. The most useful distinction is therefore how firmly each fits the budget and what is established about its listing.
| Phone | Price and U.S. unlocked status | What the cited source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 10a | $499, listed by Tom’s Guide in 2026; verify the exact unlocked U.S. listing and current stock. | Tom’s Guide’s top cheap-phone pick; reports a 15-hour, 16-minute battery test result, 6.3-inch display, camera setup, and seven-year software and security update commitment. |
| Samsung Galaxy A37 5G | $449.99 announced U.S. unlocked starting price; Samsung said U.S. availability begins April 9, 2026. | Samsung’s official announcement establishes the starting price and availability date. The cited information does not provide comparable independent battery or camera test results. |
| Nothing Phone (4a) Pro | Nothing’s U.S. collection page displays a $419 sale listing with $499 crossed out, and also a $599 listing. Configuration and unlocked status need checking. | A potentially in-budget listing, not a reliably established permanent under-$500 price. Confirm the specific product, configuration, unlocked status, stock, and carrier compatibility. |
| Samsung Galaxy A56 5G, 128GB | Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP list gives $499.99 unlocked and marks the model EOL. | Consider only if a current remaining-stock or clearance listing is actually available. The MSRP sheet does not establish current inventory. |
Samsung announced that the Galaxy A37 5G starts at $449.99 and begins U.S. availability on April 9, 2026. Its Galaxy A57 5G starts at $549.99 unlocked, so it is above this budget at the announced starting price. Nothing’s U.S. collection page currently presents the Phone (4a) Pro at $419 beside a crossed-out $499 price, while also showing a $599 listing. Because the page does not fully settle which configuration the lower price covers or establish unlocked status and carrier compatibility, treat it as a candidate to verify rather than a firm recommendation. Check Nothing’s U.S. phone collection for the live listing.

Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP list marks the 128GB Galaxy A56 5G as EOL at $499.99 unlocked; its 256GB version is listed at $549.99 and also marked EOL. An MSRP is not proof that a phone is still in stock. Samsung’s March 2026 mobile-phone MSRP list provides those model and status details.

What to check before buying an unlocked phone
Confirm the exact unlocked SKU and final price
“Unlocked” does not guarantee that every version works on every U.S. carrier. Before paying, check that the listing is for the U.S. unlocked model, that it is new or refurbished as you intend, and that the final price after any promotion is $500 or less. For the Nothing listing, verify which configuration receives the displayed sale price. For the Galaxy A56, confirm that the specific listing is in stock rather than relying on its EOL MSRP.
Check carrier compatibility
Use your carrier’s compatibility checker or ask the carrier to confirm the exact model number before purchase. Verify support for your carrier’s network and the services you rely on; do not infer compatibility merely from a phone being sold unlocked.

Compare evidence on the features you care about
The figures available here are not a controlled comparison across all four phones. For the Pixel 10a, the 15-hour, 16-minute battery result is Tom’s Guide’s test measurement. It should not be compared as if it were a manufacturer claim or a test of the Galaxy A37, Nothing Phone (4a) Pro, or Galaxy A56. Likewise, the seven-year update commitment cited here belongs to the Pixel 10a, while Google’s separate Pixel 9a announcement describes the Pixel 9a—not the 10a.

Google’s March 19, 2025 announcement says the Pixel 9a starts at $499 in the U.S. and specifies a 6.3-inch 120Hz Actua display, 48MP main and 13MP ultrawide cameras, IP68 water and dust resistance, and seven years of OS updates, security updates, and Pixel Drops. Google also describes Pixel 9a battery life as over 30 hours, a manufacturer claim for that model. Those facts do not establish Pixel 10a specifications or battery life. Google’s Pixel 9a announcement identifies the model and its claims.
