The best TV for Steam Link is not automatically the one with the brightest panel or highest refresh rate. It is a television whose operating system can run the Steam Link app in your country, or a TV that can accept a supported external receiver. Steam Link streams a game from a computer running Steam; the TV displays the video and audio while controller input travels back to that computer. Your host PC therefore remains part of the setup.
For the simplest installation, start with a TV running a compatible version of Android TV or a compatible Fire TV platform, confirm that the Steam Link app appears in that exact model’s app store, and connect both the PC and receiving device to your router by Ethernet when practical. Samsung Smart TVs require an external supported receiver because Steam Support says the native app is no longer available on Samsung TV.
What Steam Link actually does
Steam Link is a remote-play receiver, not a game console built into the television. Steam runs on a host computer, which renders the game. The Steam Link app on a TV or streaming device receives the encoded picture and sound, sends your controller commands back to the computer, and displays the result on the screen.
This arrangement has three important consequences:
- The computer running Steam must be powered on, signed in, and able to run the game.
- The TV’s operating system or an attached receiver must support the Steam Link app.
- Your home network affects responsiveness and image stability. A superb panel cannot compensate for a weak wireless path or an overloaded host PC.
Valve’s Remote Play documentation lists Apple TV, Android phones and tablets, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Raspberry Pi, Windows, Linux, and macOS among receiving destinations. Support is platform-specific, so the name of a TV manufacturer is not enough to establish compatibility.

Which TVs support Steam Link?
Android TV televisions
Valve’s Android support information says many Android TVs running Android 5.0 or newer can use Steam Link. “Many” is significant: Android TV branding does not guarantee that every model, firmware build, country, or app-store catalog offers the application.
Before buying, open the television manufacturer’s specification page for the exact model and region, then check that model’s Google Play store for Steam Link. If the app is not listed, treat the television as requiring an external receiver even if another Android TV set in the same product family supports it.
Android TV is the most straightforward native-TV route when the app is available. It can also pair with a Bluetooth controller, and Valve’s app listing recommends Ethernet connections for both Android TV and the host computer for the best performance.

Valve lists Amazon Fire TV as a supported destination category. A television with Fire TV built in may therefore run Steam Link directly, while a separate Fire TV device can add the same receiving function to a TV whose built-in software lacks it.
Do not assume that every Fire TV-branded model or every regional firmware revision has identical app availability. Search for Steam Link on the exact device before purchase, and check whether the model has a usable Ethernet option or requires a wired adapter.
Samsung Smart TVs
Steam Support states: “Steam Link is no longer available on Samsung TV.” The notice explains that Samsung no longer supports the corresponding app plugin. This refers to the native Smart TV application; it does not mean that Steam Link itself has been discontinued on other platforms.

If you own a Samsung television, plan on an external supported receiver such as a compatible Android TV or Fire TV device. Verify the receiver’s own app listing and connect it to the television through HDMI. Looking for an old Samsung app tutorial can waste time because the native option is no longer maintained.

A television running another smart-TV operating system may still work well with Steam Link when paired with a supported receiver. Valve’s listed destinations include several device categories, but the list does not establish native support for every television platform.
For an unlisted operating system, use the external-device approach rather than sideloading an unverified application. A supported receiver also makes it easier to replace the streaming hardware later without replacing a functioning display.
Native app or external receiver?
Use this decision table before comparing screen specifications.
| Setup | What you need | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android TV with Steam Link listed | Compatible TV, host PC, controller, network | One remote display device; no extra HDMI box | App availability can vary by model and region; built-in networking may be wireless |
| Fire TV television with Steam Link listed | Compatible Fire TV television, host PC, controller, network | Integrated receiver and TV interface | Verify the exact model and regional app catalog |
| Any TV plus supported Android TV or Fire TV receiver | Television with HDMI, receiver, host PC, controller, network | Works around unsupported built-in software; receiver can be replaced independently | Additional device, HDMI connection, power supply, and possible Ethernet adapter |
| Samsung Smart TV without a receiver | Television and host PC only | None for native Steam Link | Steam Support says the native Samsung TV app is no longer available |
The external option is often the safer purchase when app availability is uncertain. It separates the long-lived display from software that can change with operating-system updates.

1. Confirm the exact software and region
Write down the complete model number, not just the product family. Check the television’s operating system version, country-specific app store, and current firmware notes. Then search the on-device store for “Steam Link.” A retailer’s generic statement that a television is an Android TV or Fire TV model is not a substitute for this check.

2. Make wired networking possible
For best performance, Valve’s Android listing recommends Ethernet for both the host computer and Android TV. Its Steam Link hardware guidance also strongly recommends wired networking. Ethernet removes one of the most common sources of variable delivery: wireless interference between the receiver and router.
Check whether the television has a physical Ethernet port in a location reachable by your router. If you will use an external receiver, check the receiver’s Ethernet support and whether it needs a separate USB Ethernet adapter. If wiring both ends is impossible, place the receiver and router where the wireless signal is strong and avoid saturating the connection with large downloads or video streams.
3. Treat the panel as a separate TV decision
Resolution, screen size, brightness, contrast, viewing angle, HDR behavior, and refresh rate determine how the television looks with ordinary games, films, and broadcast content. They are worthwhile buying criteria, but the available evidence does not establish that a particular current panel is “best” for Steam Link or that a higher refresh rate alone improves the streamed result.

The stream is limited by what the host PC renders, what Steam Link encodes, the network path, and what the receiving app and television can decode. A premium panel can make a stable stream look better, but it cannot create detail that was never delivered or remove delay caused by congestion.
4. Check controller connectivity
Valve’s Android app listing says the app can pair with a Bluetooth controller or Steam Controller. Confirm that your chosen receiver supports the controller connection method you intend to use. Bluetooth pairing may be convenient, while a controller connected by USB can avoid wireless interference when the receiver has a suitable port.
Remember that the controller should pair with the receiving device, not necessarily with the television panel itself. On a native Android TV set, that usually means pairing in the TV’s Bluetooth settings. With an external receiver, pair through the receiver’s settings.

5. Leave room for the host PC
Steam Link does not replace the gaming computer. Check that the PC can run the game at the resolution and quality you want, that Steam is installed, and that the computer can remain on while you play from the television. A desktop hidden in another room still needs reliable network access and adequate cooling.

You need one when the television cannot install a currently supported Steam Link app. That includes Samsung Smart TVs under Steam Support’s current notice and any model whose app store does not list Steam Link.
Choose a supported Android TV or Fire TV receiver, connect it to an HDMI input, and verify the app before relying on it. The receiver becomes the Steam Link endpoint; the TV is simply the display and audio system. This arrangement can also be preferable when the television’s built-in software is slow, locked to an old app catalog, or difficult to update.
An external receiver is not automatically better. It adds another power supply, remote control, network connection, and possible point of failure. Native installation is cleaner when the exact television is confirmed compatible and has the network and Bluetooth features you need.
Steam Link setup: step-by-step
Prepare the host computer
- Install or update Steam on the computer that will run the games.
- Sign in to the same Steam account you will use on the receiving device.
- Keep the computer awake during play and make sure the game launches normally at the desired resolution.
- Connect the computer to the router by Ethernet when possible. Valve specifically recommends a wired connection for the host in its Android TV performance guidance.
Install Steam Link on the TV or receiver
- Open the television or receiver’s official app store.
- Search for Steam Link and confirm that the publisher is Valve.
- Install the app, then apply any available TV or receiver firmware update.
- If the app does not appear, stop and reassess compatibility. Do not assume that a similarly named remote-play app is Steam Link.
Connect the devices
- Launch Steam Link on the receiving device.
- Allow it to discover the computer running Steam, or follow the on-screen pairing process.
- Enter the displayed pairing code on the host computer when prompted.
- Run the built-in network or controller check if the app offers one.
Pair and test the controller
- Put the Bluetooth controller into pairing mode.
- Open the receiving device’s Bluetooth settings and select the controller, or connect it by USB if supported.
- Confirm that button presses appear in Steam Link before launching a game.
- Start with a game you know well so you can distinguish input or network problems from game-specific settings.
Choose a sensible first stream configuration
Begin with the app’s balanced or automatic quality setting. If the picture breaks up, reduce the streaming quality before changing television picture modes. If the image is stable but soft, raise quality gradually while watching for dropped frames or delayed input. The right setting depends on the host PC, network, receiver, and game; there is no universal television preset.

Network practices that improve reliability
- Wire the host PC and receiver to the same router when cable runs allow it.
- Keep the receiver away from enclosed cabinets and crowded wireless equipment.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and high-bitrate streams while playing.
- Use the router’s less-congested wireless band if a wired connection is impossible.
- Update the router, TV or receiver firmware, Steam, and the Steam Link app.
- Test at the time you normally play; a connection that works in the afternoon can be congested in the evening.
Wired networking is a recommendation for consistency, not a promise of a particular frame rate or latency. The host computer’s workload and the game’s rendering settings still matter.

Common problems and fixes
The TV cannot find the Steam Link app
Check the exact model’s regional app store, confirm that the television is signed in to its store account, and install pending firmware updates. If the app remains absent, use a supported external receiver. This is the expected path for Samsung Smart TVs under Steam Support’s current statement.
The computer is not discovered
Confirm that Steam is running on the host, both devices are connected to the same home network, and the computer is not asleep. Temporarily disable network isolation features that prevent devices on the same network from communicating. If discovery still fails, use the app’s manual pairing option if available and enter the displayed code on the host.
Video stutters or becomes blocky
Start by wiring the host and receiver. If that is not possible, move the receiver nearer to the router, stop competing traffic, and lower the stream quality. Check whether the host PC is overloaded by the game or another application. A sharper TV setting cannot fix packets arriving late or missing.
Controls feel delayed or do not respond
Test the controller at the receiving device’s Bluetooth or USB level before launching the game. Replace or recharge its batteries, remove competing Bluetooth connections, and try a wired controller if the receiver supports one. Then check the network path; input must travel to the host and the resulting video must return before you see the response.
The picture has black bars or the wrong size
Check the host game’s resolution and aspect ratio, the Steam Link display settings, and the TV’s picture-size mode. Avoid aggressive overscan settings that crop the desktop or game interface. Change one setting at a time so you can identify whether the host, receiver, or TV is scaling the image.
A practical buying checklist
- Exact television model and country confirmed.
- Steam Link appears in that model’s current app store, or a supported receiver is included in the budget.
- HDMI input is available for an external receiver if needed.
- Ethernet is available for the host PC and, ideally, the TV or receiver.
- Bluetooth or USB controller support matches your controller.
- The host PC can run the games and remain awake.
- The panel’s size, brightness, contrast, resolution, and general gaming features suit your other viewing needs.
- You have checked firmware and app availability close to purchase, because software catalogs can change.
What “best” means in this category
For Steam Link, “best” is a compatibility decision before it is a picture-quality ranking. A modestly priced TV with a confirmed app and a wired receiver can deliver a more dependable experience than a flagship display whose smart-TV platform cannot run Steam Link. Conversely, a television with excellent contrast and gaming features remains a good general-purpose display when paired with the right receiver, even though those panel traits do not independently prove better streaming performance.
The defensible recommendation is therefore to buy by verified platform support: choose an Android TV or Fire TV setup with Steam Link available on the exact device, or select the display you prefer and add a supported receiver. Connect the host computer and receiver by Ethernet where practical, pair a compatible controller, and tune stream quality only after the connection is stable.
