For everyday streaming, TV shows, and occasional movies, start with a value-oriented 4K smart TV sized for your room. Choose based on seating distance and lighting—not the biggest screen or most advanced gaming specs you can afford. In a bright room, prioritize brightness and reflection handling; in a darker room, give more weight to black levels and contrast.
What makes a TV a good fit for everyday watching?
For casual use, the essentials are a screen that suits your room, 4K resolution, the streaming apps you use, and enough HDMI inputs for your devices. Target defines 4K as 3840 × 2160 pixels and recommends a 55–65-inch 4K TV with HDR and at least three HDMI ports as an everyday-TV sweet spot for many buyers. Samsung Canada’s 2026 lineup positions the Crystal UHD U8000H as a practical 4K option for everyday entertainment, streaming, shows, and casual movies. Samsung describes Crystal UHD as ideal for practical everyday 4K use, while its guide places Mini LED higher for enhanced picture performance. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of its own range, not independent test rankings. Treat the U8000H as an example to compare, not a universal winner, and verify the local model number, size, specifications, warranty, and availability before buying. Samsung Canada’s lineup guide notes that features can vary by model and region.

What size TV should you get?
Use your seating distance and room layout to narrow the size. Target’s February 5, 2026 guide suggests 7–9 feet for a 55-inch TV and 8–11 feet for a 65-inch TV. These are retailer-published ranges, not a universal engineering rule; consider your own comfort, viewing habits, and whether the screen will dominate the room.

Check the dimensions of the TV and stand as well as the diagonal screen measurement, especially if it must fit inside a cabinet or on a narrow console.
How should room lighting affect your choice?
Bright rooms and daytime viewing
Look for strong brightness and effective reflection handling if sunlight or lamps regularly hit the screen. TechRadar’s October 5, 2026 guide identifies the Samsung QN90F as a bright-room option, citing its brightness and anti-reflection screen, while describing it as pricier and noting that it lacks Dolby Vision. It is a premium example rather than a default value pick; compare the exact regional model and current listing before considering it. Dim rooms and evening movies
In darker viewing conditions, deeper blacks and stronger contrast may matter more than peak brightness. Compare independently reviewed TVs in your budget for black-level and HDR performance; the available guidance does not establish one best dark-room model for every buyer.
Do you need 120Hz, VRR, or HDMI 2.1?
Usually not if you mainly stream shows and watch movies. Target identifies a native 120Hz refresh rate, variable refresh rate (VRR), auto low latency mode (ALLM), and HDMI 2.1 as gaming-oriented features for newer consoles. They can be worthwhile if console gaming is a meaningful secondary use, but a casual streamer need not pay extra for them solely to watch video. Check how many HDMI ports support the features you need, rather than assuming every port has identical capabilities.
