For most garages, start with a 43–55-inch TV in a single bay and a 55–75-inch TV in a two-car garage. A large workshop can justify 75 inches or more. Then check the farthest seat or workbench, the viewing angle, and how much daylight reaches the screen. A covered garage is generally a full-shade location; garages with bright open doors may need a partial-sun or full-sun outdoor TV rather than simply a larger indoor set.
Quick size recommendations by garage layout
Garage floor area is only a starting point. The screen must be large enough for the farthest viewer, yet not so large that nearby viewers have to turn their heads constantly. Use these ranges as a first pass, then measure the actual seating and work areas.
| Garage or viewing situation | Starting TV size | What should move you toward the larger end | Sunlight class to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-car garage, one seating area, viewers about 6–10 feet away | 43–55 inches | Viewers sit near the back wall, watch from a side angle, or need to see the screen while working at a bench | Full-shade outdoor model if the space is dusty or unconditioned; an indoor TV can work in a clean, climate-controlled garage |
| Two-car garage with seating and a workbench | 55–75 inches | People watch from both bays, the farthest seat is across the garage, or several people need to see the screen at once | Full shade when the door is normally closed; partial sun when daylight reaches the panel |
| Large workshop or multi-position viewing | 75 inches or larger | The screen is viewed from distant vehicle bays, multiple workstations, or a wide seating spread | Choose according to the brightest part of the day, not the garage’s darkest condition |
| Garage opening directly onto a bright patio or driveway | 65–85 inches may be appropriate at long distances | Long viewing distance and several off-axis seats justify the increase, provided the wall can support the mount | Partial-sun or full-sun model with anti-reflection treatment |
These are practical ranges, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s viewing-distance guidance. LG’s size guidance uses a 40-degree viewing-angle concept: distance and seating layout matter as much as the number of cars that fit in the garage. Map the farthest regular viewing position before buying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMeasure viewing distance before choosing the diagonal
Measure the farthest regular seat
Measure from the intended screen plane to the eye position of the farthest regular viewer. Include a chair behind a vehicle bay, a stool at a workbench, and any spot where someone will watch while exercising or repairing equipment. A TV that looks impressive from the nearest chair may be difficult to read from the back of a two-car garage.

Account for side-to-side viewing
Garages rarely have theater-style seating. Someone may watch from the opposite bay, beside a car, or from an open door. A larger panel can make text and subtitles easier to read from those positions, but viewing angle still matters. Look for a model with a wide published viewing angle and mount it where the screen faces the main activity area rather than one particular chair.
Keep the screen at a practical height
Mounting above a parked vehicle can protect the panel, but excessive height forces viewers to look up for long periods. Check the line of sight from seated and standing positions, and make sure a raised garage door, storage rack, or vehicle hatch cannot strike the screen. Leave enough clearance for the mount to tilt or swivel without contacting the wall, door track, or shelving.
Sunlight determines the TV category
Outdoor TVs are sold for different light conditions. Brightness, anti-glare treatment, thermal design, and enclosure protection are engineered together, so a larger screen does not compensate for a panel designed for the wrong environment.
Full-shade
Full-shade models are intended for locations sheltered from direct sun. Crutchfield specifically lists a covered garage among suitable full-shade locations. This is normally the right class when the garage door is closed during viewing and the screen sits under a roof or deep overhang.
Partial-sun
Choose partial-sun equipment when daylight reaches the screen for part of the day, such as a garage with the door open, a shallow awning, or a bright side window. Anti-reflection treatment and higher brightness help, but placement still matters. Consumer Reports senior electronics editor James K. Willcox notes that most outdoor TVs are recommended for partial sun and should be placed in shade beneath a patio roof.
Full-sun
Direct-sun locations need a model explicitly designed for full-sun exposure. These sets use stronger brightness and thermal management than shade models. Do not assume that a premium indoor TV or a partial-sun product is safe in direct sunlight.

Samsung warns that direct sunlight can heat the panel surface enough to create a temporary dark area and recommends keeping the TV out of direct sun; a roof or awning helps. More shade improves contrast and reduces the brightness burden for any model.

When an indoor TV may be acceptable
An indoor TV may be viable in a clean, climate-controlled garage used occasionally, provided it remains within the manufacturer’s published temperature and moisture limits. Keep it away from an open door where rain, condensation, or direct sunlight can reach the panel. Control dust during sanding, grinding, painting, and vehicle work, and never assume that a dry day eliminates humidity or temperature concerns.
Why outdoor-rated protection is safer in an unconditioned garage
Consumer Reports says outdoor TVs are built to withstand rain, dirt, humidity, and temperature swings. A sealed outdoor enclosure reduces environmental uncertainty when the garage is dusty, damp, or exposed to seasonal heat and cold. It does not make the TV indestructible: follow the exact operating and storage limits, keep vents and connectors clear, and protect the set from impact.
What an outdoor rating does not mean
An ingress rating is not permission to submerge the television or spray it with a pressure washer. Samsung states that The Terrace is rated IP55 and should not be submerged. Water can still enter through an improperly fitted cover, open connector, or damaged seal, so installation quality matters as much as the badge on the enclosure.
Brightness, anti-glare, and viewing angle
There is no universal nit number that guarantees visibility in every garage or outdoor setting. Read the manufacturer’s sunlight classification and look for independent testing when available. Reflections, screen coating, the angle of incoming light, and the color of the wall behind the viewer all affect readability.
Samsung Business lists 1,500-nit brightness for its Terrace Pro datasheet (2020). That is a model-specific specification, not a requirement for every garage. A shaded single-bay garage may be comfortable with less brightness, while a screen facing an open, sunlit driveway may need a full-sun design. Anti-reflection treatment can be just as important as peak brightness because it suppresses mirror-like reflections from the garage door, vehicles, and polished tools.

- Check the brightest viewing period: observe the wall where the TV will go with the door open at the time you normally watch.
- Look for anti-reflection language: “anti-glare” or “anti-reflection” should be tied to the specific model, not assumed from the product category.
- Consider off-axis seats: wide viewing-angle designs preserve contrast when viewers sit in another bay.
- Prefer shade when possible: an awning or deeper mounting position can improve the image more effectively than simply buying a larger diagonal.
Samsung The Terrace as a concrete size and protection example
Samsung’s The Terrace line illustrates how outdoor models are divided by light level. Samsung lists Partial Sun versions in 55-, 65-, 75-, and 85-inch sizes, and Full Sun versions in 65-, 75-, and 85-inch sizes. The product information specifies IP55/IP56 protection, anti-reflection treatment, and a wide viewing angle. Match the size to your measured distance rather than selecting the biggest panel automatically.
| Terrace variant | Listed sizes | Protection and optical features | Typical garage use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Partial Sun | 55, 65, 75, 85 inches | IP55/IP56 protection, anti-reflection, wide viewing angle | Garage with daylight on the screen for part of the day or an open door facing a bright area |
| Full Sun | 65, 75, 85 inches | IP55/IP56 protection, anti-reflection, wide viewing angle | Locations where direct sunlight cannot be reliably blocked |
The listed protection level still requires sensible placement. Avoid standing water, keep the enclosure from being struck by vehicles or tools, and follow Samsung’s temperature and installation instructions for the exact model.
Compare the total installation, not just the screen
| Decision factor | Questions to answer | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Screen size | What are the nearest and farthest regular viewing positions? | Distance and angle determine legibility more reliably than garage square footage alone. |
| Sunlight class | Is the panel in full shade, partial sun, or direct sun at the brightest time? | The wrong class can produce washed-out images, reflections, or heat-related shutdowns. |
| Anti-glare performance | Does the model specify anti-reflection treatment? | Reduces reflections from doors, cars, windows, and bright tools. |
| Ingress protection | What IP rating and water limitations are published? | Shows how the enclosure is tested, but does not permit submersion or careless washing. |
| Operating temperature | Does the published range cover your garage’s seasonal extremes? | Unconditioned spaces can exceed indoor-TV limits even when they feel comfortable to people. |
| Mount and wall | Can the wall and fasteners support the TV, mount, and vibration? | Outdoor-TV guides note that mounts are often separate purchases; corrosion-resistant hardware is important. |
| Cover and maintenance | Will you use a fitted dust/weather cover when the TV is idle? | Reduces contamination when vehicles, woodworking, or open doors expose the panel to dust and moisture. |
| Smart features and wiring | Is Wi-Fi reliable, and are power and HDMI connections protected? | Concrete walls and metal doors can weaken wireless signals; exposed connectors need careful routing and sealing. |
Installation procedure for a garage TV
- Observe the location. Check the wall at different times of day with the garage door open and closed. Note direct sun, reflections, rain blown through the opening, and likely dust-producing tasks.
- Measure the viewing envelope. Record the nearest and farthest regular eye positions, the widest side angle, and the height of the workbench or seating. Use these measurements with the TV maker’s size and viewing-angle guidance.
- Select the light class. Use full shade for a sheltered garage, partial sun when daylight reaches the panel, and full sun only when direct exposure cannot be blocked.
- Verify environmental limits. Read the exact model’s operating-temperature, storage, humidity, and installation requirements. An outdoor label does not override those limits.
- Choose a corrosion-resistant mount. Crutchfield recommends weatherproof mounts made from stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant materials. Confirm the mount’s weight, VESA pattern, tilt range, and clearance from doors and vehicles.
- Prepare power and signal cables. Use a properly grounded outlet and route cables away from moving garage doors, sharp metal, exhaust heat, and areas where tools can snag them. Protect connections as the TV maker specifies.
- Mount and align the screen. Center it on the main activity zone, then test the sightline from every regular seat and work position. Avoid a location where a raised hatch, ladder, or storage item can hit the panel.
- Add a fitted cover. Cover the TV when it is idle if the garage is dusty or exposed to humidity. Remove the cover before operation and ensure the enclosure is dry.
- Test in real conditions. Watch familiar content during the brightest period, check subtitles from the farthest position, and verify that the screen does not overheat or show temporary dark areas in sunlight.
Budget for the complete installation
Consumer Reports reported in its May 2026 update that a basic 55-inch outdoor TV could cost under $1,000. Larger screens and brighter partial-sun or full-sun models cost more. The screen is only one line in the budget: add the mount, corrosion-resistant fasteners, cable protection, a cover, and any electrical work required to place a safe outlet.

Washed-out picture when the door is open
First block or redirect the light with an awning, deeper wall position, or shade screen. If daylight remains on the panel, move from a full-shade model to a partial-sun or full-sun model with anti-reflection treatment. Increasing size alone does not remove reflections.
Temporary dark patch in sunlight
Turn off direct sun, provide shade, and allow the panel to cool. Samsung documents that direct sunlight can raise surface temperature enough to create a temporary dark area. If the condition repeats, the location is unsuitable for that model’s sunlight class.

Dust on the screen or in connectors
Stop nearby sanding or grinding while the TV is operating, use a fitted cover when idle, and clean only according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Never blow compressed air directly into openings unless the manual permits it.

Power the TV down and let it dry fully. Investigate whether rain enters through the open door, whether a cover traps moisture, or whether the garage experiences rapid temperature changes. Do not operate a wet set or treat an IP rating as submersion protection.
Wireless streaming drops out
Test the connection from the mounted location. Metal doors and reinforced walls can weaken Wi-Fi; a wired network connection or a better-positioned access point may be more reliable. Keep network equipment away from dust and moisture as well.
Viewing angle feels wrong
Recheck the widest seat and tilt the mount toward the activity area. If people watch from both bays, a wider-angle panel or a larger screen mounted farther from obstructions may be preferable to a narrow, high-contrast indoor model.
Garage TV buying checklist
- Measure the farthest and widest regular viewing positions.
- Use 43–55 inches as the single-car starting range, 55–75 inches for a two-car garage, and 75 inches or more for a large workshop.
- Classify the location as full shade, partial sun, or full sun at the brightest viewing time.
- Check anti-reflection treatment and the manufacturer’s viewing-angle information.
- Verify IP rating, operating-temperature range, humidity limits, and the warning against submersion.
- Confirm that the wall, mount, fasteners, and cable route can tolerate garage conditions.
- Include a cover and corrosion-resistant hardware in the total cost.
- Test readability, reflections, subtitles, and heat behavior before finalizing the installation.
Bottom line: choose the environment first, then the diagonal
A 43–55-inch full-shade outdoor TV is the sensible starting point for a single-car garage, while a 55–75-inch model fits most two-car layouts. Move to 75 inches or larger only when the farthest viewing position and multiple work areas justify it. If the garage opens onto bright daylight, select the appropriate partial-sun or full-sun class before spending more on screen size. Shade, anti-reflection treatment, environmental ratings, and a properly protected mount determine whether the TV remains watchable and reliable long after installation.
