For the lowest practical input lag in Grand Theft Auto VI, set the television to its Game Mode, Game Optimizer, or equivalent low-latency picture preset; enable automatic low-latency switching (ALLM) when both the TV and console support it; use the TV’s documented gaming HDMI input; and avoid motion, noise-reduction, and other image-processing features. On PS5, check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > ALLM. VRR can be useful on a compatible display and game, but there is no official GTA 6-specific VRR, frame-rate, or input-lag result to rely on yet.

The settings order that matters most

Apply these changes in order. The first two determine whether the TV is processing the picture for gaming; the later steps prevent compatibility problems and unnecessary processing.

  1. Select the TV’s low-latency picture mode. Look for Game Mode, Game Optimizer, Gaming, or a similar label.
  2. Turn on ALLM or automatic game detection if the television and console support it. This lets the console request the TV’s low-latency mode when gameplay starts.
  3. Use the correct HDMI input. Some models reserve their fastest or highest-bandwidth features for one or more specifically labelled ports.
  4. Disable extra picture processing such as frame interpolation, noise reduction, and cinema or filmmaker processing in the gaming profile.
  5. Configure VRR only when the complete chain supports it. The TV, HDMI input, cable, console output, and game must work together; VRR is not a guaranteed GTA 6 latency setting.

Menus differ by manufacturer, model year, region, and firmware. Treat the names below as functions to find, not universal menu paths.

1. Put the TV in Game Mode or its equivalent

Why this is the primary setting

A television normally applies scaling, sharpening, motion estimation, noise reduction, dynamic contrast, and other operations before showing an image. Those operations can add processing time. Game Mode is a preset intended to shorten that processing path. It is usually the single most important TV-side change for controller responsiveness.

How to find it

  1. Open the TV’s Picture, Display, or Inputs menu while the console is selected.
  2. Choose Picture Mode, Game Mode, Game Optimizer, or the model’s equivalent low-latency option.
  3. Save the mode for the specific HDMI input. Many televisions store separate settings for each input, so changing the mode while watching another source may not affect the console.
  4. Return to the console input and confirm that the gaming mode remains active after restarting the TV and console.

Some sets expose a gaming dashboard that reports resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR, and latency-related status. Use it as a connection check, not as proof of a particular GTA 6 frame rate or measured lag value.

What you give up

Game Mode may make film and television images look less processed, less smooth, or less sharpened. That is expected. Keep the gaming preset confined to the console input and use a separate cinema or standard preset for video content.

2. Enable Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)

What ALLM does

ALLM allows a compatible console to signal the TV when a game is running, so the TV can switch into its low-latency mode automatically. Sony describes ALLM as available only on compatible televisions with HDMI 2.1; some manufacturers simply label the resulting function Game Mode or Auto Game Mode. See Sony’s feature explanation at PlayStation’s PS5 features page.

TV-side setup

  1. Open the TV’s External Devices, HDMI, Game, or General settings.
  2. Enable ALLM, Auto Game Mode, Instant Game Response, or the equivalent option.
  3. If the TV offers an HDMI signal mode such as Enhanced, 4K Enhanced, or 8K Enhanced, enable it only on the input and resolution combination supported by the manual.
  4. Connect the console to that enabled input and test whether the picture preset changes when a game starts.

HDMI 2.1 on a port does not, by itself, prove that ALLM is implemented. Sony specifically warns that HDMI 2.1 alone does not guarantee ALLM, so verify the exact model, input, and supported features in the TV manual.

If automatic switching is unavailable

Leave the TV in Game Mode manually. This produces the same practical low-processing picture path even though the set will not switch profiles automatically when you move between a game and another source. A television manual may describe automatic console configuration without every model supporting every HDMI 2.1 feature; Philips documentation, for example, lists ALLM as a capability of supported equipment rather than a universal function: Philips automatic game-console configuration documentation.

3. PS5 settings: the documented ALLM path

Use this section only for the PS5 version of the setup. Sony’s documented menu path is:

  1. Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
  2. Select Screen and Video.
  3. Choose Video Output.
  4. Set ALLM to Automatic or enable it according to the options shown on your console.

Sony says a compatible TV switches to low-latency mode while you play. The complete PS5 resolution and HDMI guidance is available in Sony’s PS5 4K resolution guide.

Important PS5 interaction with VRR

Sony notes that VRR output can still cause a compatible TV to enter low-latency mode even when the PS5’s ALLM setting is Off. That behavior does not mean VRR is reducing GTA 6’s latency; it describes how the console and TV may select a gaming picture mode.

Confirm the result

After changing ALLM, launch a game and inspect the TV’s information banner or gaming dashboard. The label may change from Standard or Cinema to Game. If it does not, check the cable, selected HDMI input, TV firmware, and the model’s ALLM requirements before assuming the console setting failed.

4. Xbox Series X|S settings

GTA 6 is officially announced for Xbox Series X|S as well as PS5, but the PS5 menu path above does not apply to Xbox. On an Xbox Series console, use the console’s Settings and General display options to confirm that the desired resolution, refresh-rate, and optional VRR output are available, then use the television’s manual to locate ALLM or automatic game detection.

If the TV does not switch automatically when a game starts, select Game Mode manually for that HDMI input. Do not infer ALLM support from the presence of an “HDMI 2.1” label alone; the TV’s model-specific specifications and manual are decisive.

5. Remove processing that can delay the picture

Once Game Mode is selected, inspect the gaming picture profile. Names and available controls vary, but these are the usual latency-sensitive choices:

TV control Recommended gaming setting Reason and qualification
Motion smoothing, motion interpolation, or TruMotion-style processing Off Generated intermediate frames require additional processing and can change the feel of camera and aiming movement.
Noise reduction and MPEG or digital noise reduction Off These filters analyze the incoming image instead of displaying it as directly as possible.
Film, cinema, or de-judder processing Off in the gaming profile These controls are intended for filmed content, not interactive output.
Dynamic contrast, live contrast, and automatic black-level enhancement Off or the least aggressive option They can alter brightness during play and add processing; use them only if you prefer the appearance and the TV keeps Game Mode active.
Super resolution, edge enhancement, and heavy sharpening Low or Off These filters do not make controller input arrive sooner and may create halos or unstable detail.
HDR tone mapping Use the TV’s game/HDR option, not a cinema-only mode Keep HDR processing inside the low-latency gaming profile; exact labels and behavior are model-specific.

Do not disable a setting merely because it sounds advanced. If a control is part of the manufacturer’s gaming preset and the manual says it is required for HDR, VRR, or a particular signal format, follow the manual. The goal is a stable gaming profile, not the fewest menu items.

6. Use the right HDMI input and cable

Identify the correct port

Read the label beside each HDMI socket and the TV manual. A set may have one HDMI 2.1 input, several high-bandwidth inputs, or a port-specific gaming feature. Connect the console directly to the supported input rather than routing it through an older receiver, switch, or capture device while troubleshooting latency.

Cable guidance for PS5

Sony recommends the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5. A compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that supports HDMI 2.1 should support ALLM when the television and console also support it. Replacing a working cable solely because it is not new is not established as a way to lower input lag; a replacement is useful when the existing cable cannot carry the required signal, is damaged, or causes dropouts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Symptoms of a connection problem

  • The console repeatedly loses signal when 4K, HDR, high refresh rate, or VRR is enabled.
  • The TV’s gaming dashboard reports a lower capability than the console setting.
  • ALLM works on one HDMI input but not another.
  • The picture returns to a non-gaming preset after changing resolution or source.

When these occur, use the included or a certified Ultra High Speed cable, move the console to the documented gaming input, and retest with intermediate devices disconnected.

7. VRR: useful technology, not a confirmed GTA 6 lag fix

Variable refresh rate synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh timing with the console’s output. Sony describes VRR as dependent on a compatible display and compatible games, with results varying by television and game. It can reduce visible tearing and uneven-motion artifacts when output timing fluctuates, but that is different from proving a lower controller-to-screen delay.

What is known about GTA 6

Rockstar’s official announcement says: “Grand Theft Auto VI is coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X|S.” The announcement, dated August 6, 2026, establishes the platforms and launch date at Rockstar Games’ official announcement. It does not specify a launch frame rate, graphics modes, VRR implementation, or measured input-lag figure.

How to decide whether to enable VRR

  • Enable it when the TV manual, console display information, and game output all indicate compatibility.
  • Keep it off if it causes flicker, brightness changes, signal dropouts, or an unwanted picture-mode change.
  • Do not buy a new TV or cable solely on the assumption that VRR will reduce GTA 6 input lag.
  • Recheck the setting after the game launches and receives performance documentation; current official GTA 6 material does not provide that detail.

8. A practical setup procedure

  1. Turn off the TV’s automatic picture switching temporarily so you can see which profile is active.
  2. Connect the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S directly to the HDMI port identified in the TV manual for gaming or HDMI 2.1 features.
  3. Select Game Mode or Game Optimizer for that input.
  4. Disable motion interpolation, noise reduction, film processing, and aggressive enhancement controls in the gaming profile.
  5. Enable ALLM on the TV if present.
  6. On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > ALLM and set the option for automatic switching. On Xbox, use its display settings and the TV manual rather than copying the PS5 path.
  7. Enable VRR only if the display and current output support it without visible problems.
  8. Restart the TV and console, launch a game, and confirm that the TV reports Game Mode or an equivalent low-latency state.
  9. Change one setting at a time if you are troubleshooting. This makes it possible to identify whether a cable, port, or picture option caused the change.

9. Troubleshooting by symptom

The TV never enters Game Mode

Check that the console is on the input whose gaming profile you edited. Confirm that automatic game detection is enabled, then verify ALLM support for that exact input and model. If the TV lacks ALLM, leave Game Mode selected manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ALLM works until HDR or VRR is enabled

Check the TV manual for port-specific bandwidth and signal-mode requirements. Use the supplied PS5 cable or a compatible Ultra High Speed cable, connect directly to the TV, and test HDR and VRR separately. A setting that changes the signal format can also cause the television to load a different picture profile.

The controls feel delayed despite Game Mode

Confirm that the console is not passing through an older receiver, soundbar, switch, or capture device. Disable remaining motion and enhancement filters, check for a TV firmware update, and verify that the TV’s information panel still identifies the input as Game. If the television has a separate “low latency” toggle inside its gaming menu, enable it according to the manual.

The image looks worse in Game Mode

Adjust brightness, contrast, color temperature, and HDR tone mapping inside the gaming profile rather than switching back to a cinema preset. Preserve the low-latency mode, then make visual adjustments that do not re-enable frame interpolation or heavy filtering.

10. Recommended profiles for different setups

Setup TV profile Console action VRR decision
TV and console both support ALLM Enable automatic game detection and keep the gaming profile configured Enable ALLM or automatic switching; use the model’s documented HDMI input Enable only when the display and game/output are compatible
TV supports Game Mode but not ALLM Select Game Mode manually for the console input No automatic switch is available; leave the TV in Game Mode while playing Optional and compatibility-dependent
Older TV with uncertain HDMI features Use the least-processed picture preset available Connect directly and avoid unnecessary intermediate devices Do not assume support from an HDMI label
PS5 with intermittent signal problems Use the documented gaming input and confirm its signal mode Start with the included PS5 cable; test ALLM, HDR, and VRR separately Leave off until the connection is stable

11. What you can and cannot claim before launch

The confirmed launch information is limited to the platforms and date in Rockstar’s announcement: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. No cited official material confirms GTA 6’s frame-rate targets, graphics modes, VRR behavior, or a numerical input-lag reduction. Therefore, a sound setup can minimize avoidable television processing, but it cannot honestly promise a particular number of milliseconds or a specific performance mode.
