For the best Nintendo Switch 2 picture and responsiveness, connect the dock with Nintendo’s NGN-01 AC adapter and an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode, and start with the console’s TV Output settings on Automatic. Choose 4K when you want maximum detail at up to 60 fps, or 1080p/1440p when a particular game and TV can use 120 Hz. Turn on Auto Low-Latency Mode (ALLM), use Game Mode, configure HDR only when both the game and TV support it, and leave RGB Range on Automatic unless you have deliberately matched both devices.

There is no single setting that makes every game run at 4K and 120 fps. Resolution, refresh rate, HDR behavior and input processing depend on the software, the television and the HDMI port used by the dock.

Recommended Nintendo Switch 2 TV setup at a glance

Use this baseline before fine-tuning a particular television:

  1. Connect the Switch 2 dock to the Nintendo Switch 2 NGN-01 AC adapter.
  2. Connect the dock to the TV with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Nintendo says the HDMI cable supplied with the original Nintendo Switch is not Ultra High Speed and cannot be used for Switch 2 TV mode.
  3. Plug the cable into a TV HDMI input that supports the bandwidth you need, then enable that input’s enhanced or high-bandwidth mode.
  4. On the console, open System Settings > TV Output. Set Resolution to Automatic if you do not know the television’s capabilities.
  5. Choose 4K for the sharpest image when you accept a 60-fps ceiling, or choose 1080p or 1440p when you are targeting 120 Hz in software that supports it.
  6. Enable Auto Low-Latency Mode and confirm that the TV is using its Game Mode or equivalent.
  7. Keep 120Hz Output enabled when the TV and game support it.
  8. For HDR, use an HDR-capable TV, select Compatible Software Only if you do not want HDR applied to non-HDR software, and complete Adjust HDR when the console prompts you.
  9. Leave RGB Range on Automatic unless the TV is explicitly configured for Full RGB.

This setup favors correct handshaking and low processing before picture-quality preferences. It also avoids forcing a mode that a particular game or HDMI input cannot deliver.

4K, 1440p or 1080p: choose resolution by your priority

Docked Nintendo Switch 2 supports output up to 4K (2160p), HDR and up to 120-fps output on compatible hardware. Nintendo’s product information specifies that the frame rate is fixed to a maximum of 60 fps for 4K output. Therefore, 4K and 120 Hz are not simultaneous targets for Switch 2 TV output.

Console resolution Best reason to select it Refresh-rate implication What must also be true
4K (2160p) Maximum spatial detail on a 4K television Up to 60 fps; Nintendo states 4K output is capped at 60 fps The TV and dock HDMI path must accept 4K input
1440p A compromise for a 1440p display or a supported high-refresh setup Can be preferable when targeting 120 Hz The game, TV and HDMI input must all support 1440p at 120 Hz
1080p Highest-refresh option for compatible titles and displays, or for a 1080p TV Can be used for 120 Hz when supported The specific software must output 120 Hz and the TV must accept it
Automatic Safest choice when the TV’s capabilities are unknown The console negotiates a supported mode Correct HDMI settings and cable still matter

When 4K is the better choice

Use 4K when you sit close enough to see the extra detail, play games whose presentation benefits from a higher-resolution output, or simply prefer a 60-fps image with the sharpest available signal. The 4K setting does not guarantee that a game internally renders at 4K; it describes the output signal sent by the dock. Nintendo’s documented 60-fps maximum still applies even if a television advertises 120 Hz.

When 1080p or 1440p is the better choice

Select 1080p or 1440p when a supported title can use 120 Hz and motion responsiveness matters more than maximum pixel count. A 120-Hz output can provide more frequent display updates, but it does not force every game to render or present frames at 120 fps. The game’s own support and performance determine the result.

Why Automatic is a sensible starting point

Automatic avoids guessing about a TV’s accepted timings. It is especially useful after moving the dock to another display, using an AV receiver or soundbar in the HDMI path, or changing the TV’s HDMI mode. Once you know the display and game behavior, you can select a fixed resolution for a deliberate 4K-detail or high-refresh setup.

How to enable 120 Hz correctly

The 120Hz Output switch can be available even when the currently running software or connected TV cannot actually deliver 120 Hz. Treat it as permission for the console to use 120 Hz, not as a promise that every game will do so.

  1. On the HOME Menu, open System Settings > TV Output.
  2. Enable 120Hz Output.
  3. Set Resolution to 1080p or 1440p if you are intentionally targeting high refresh rather than 4K.
  4. Start a game that specifically supports 120-Hz output. There is no universal game-by-game 120-Hz list established here, so verify support in the individual game’s documentation or options.
  5. On the TV, open the information panel for the HDMI input and confirm that the incoming signal is reported as 120 Hz, if the set provides that readout.

If the TV reports 60 Hz, work through the troubleshooting section below instead of assuming the console is defective.

ALLM and Game Mode: the first latency settings to check

Enable Auto Low-Latency Mode (ALLM) on the Switch 2. Nintendo describes ALLM as allowing a compatible TV to change automatically to its game-mode setting. Game Mode generally bypasses or reduces video processing that can delay controller input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the TV actually changed modes

TV manufacturers use different labels and menus. Look for Game Mode, Auto Game Mode, ALLM or a picture-mode notification when the dock becomes active. If the television does not support ALLM, select Game Mode manually for the HDMI input connected to the dock.

Processing features to treat cautiously

Motion interpolation, heavy noise reduction, artificial sharpening and other cinema-processing features can add processing delay or alter the intended image. Game Mode normally disables many of them. If a particular feature remains available, compare it with the feature off while playing a timing-sensitive game; no universal input-lag number applies because results vary by TV model and software.

HDR settings and calibration

HDR requires an HDR-capable TV and a complete HDMI path that accepts the signal. A television can accept a 4K signal without providing useful HDR, so check the set’s specifications and the selected HDMI input.

Use Compatible Software Only when appropriate

In the Switch 2 TV Output settings, choose Compatible Software Only when you want HDR processing used only by games that identify themselves as HDR-compatible. This avoids applying an HDR conversion or processing mode to non-HDR software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run Adjust HDR

When the console prompts you, complete Adjust HDR in the TV Output settings. Perform the adjustment with the TV in its intended Game Mode and with the dock connected to the HDMI input you will actually use. If you later move the dock to a different TV, repeat the calibration because brightness and tone-mapping behavior are display-specific.

Understand tone mapping differences

HDR tone mapping is handled by the combination of console output and TV processing. Two TVs can show the same game with different highlight brightness or shadow detail even when both are set to HDR. Avoid judging HDR from a single menu screen; compare the result in an HDR-capable game with the TV’s Game Mode active.

RGB Range: prevent crushed or gray blacks

RGB Range controls the code values used for black-to-white video. The practical ranges commonly described for TV equipment are Full RGB: 0–255 and Limited RGB: 16–235. A mismatch between the console and TV can make dark areas look crushed (details disappear) or gray (black is lifted).

Recommended setting

Leave RGB Range on Automatic for most installations. The console and TV can negotiate a compatible range without you having to guess.

When to select Full

Choose Full only when the TV’s HDMI input is explicitly configured for Full RGB and you have verified the resulting black level. Do not select Full on the console while the TV expects Limited, or vice versa.

Simple black-level check

Use a game or calibration image containing near-black steps. If the first several dark steps merge into one solid black block, the range may be mismatched or the TV’s brightness is too low. If the entire image looks washed out, check for the opposite mismatch before raising brightness.

HDMI cable, dock power and TV input requirements

Use the required cable

Nintendo requires an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for Switch 2 TV mode. The HDMI cable included with the original Nintendo Switch is not Ultra High Speed and cannot be used for Switch 2 TV mode. Replacing it is a compatibility requirement, not merely an upgrade for a longer cable.

Use the NGN-01 AC adapter

Connect the dock with the Nintendo Switch 2 NGN-01 AC adapter. A power adapter or dock arrangement that does not meet the Switch 2 requirement can prevent reliable TV output or higher-bandwidth modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode

Many televisions ship with HDMI inputs in a compatibility mode that limits bandwidth. Enable the enhanced, high-bandwidth option for the input used by the dock. Depending on the TV, the label may be HDMI Enhanced, UHD Color, HDMI Ultra Deep Color or a similar term. Menu names differ by manufacturer, so use the label associated with 4K, high frame rate or expanded HDMI bandwidth.

Choose the right physical port

Not every HDMI socket on a TV necessarily supports the same resolution, refresh rate or HDR features. If the set labels one port as the high-bandwidth or 4K/120 input, use that port for the dock. If an AV receiver or soundbar sits between dock and TV, test a direct dock-to-TV connection when diagnosing a missing mode.

Troubleshooting missing 4K, HDR or 120 Hz

The TV shows 1080p or 60 Hz only

  • Confirm that the dock uses the NGN-01 AC adapter.
  • Replace any original Switch HDMI cable with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
  • Move the cable to the TV’s high-bandwidth HDMI input.
  • Enable the input’s enhanced/UHD/Ultra Deep Color mode.
  • On the console, return Resolution to Automatic, then test 4K or 1440p again.
  • For 120 Hz, confirm that the game itself supports 120-Hz output; the console toggle alone cannot add support.

HDR is not available

  • Verify that the TV model and the selected HDMI input support HDR.
  • Check that the HDMI input is in its enhanced mode.
  • Use Compatible Software Only and launch software that supports HDR.
  • Run Adjust HDR after the signal is established.
  • Temporarily connect the dock directly to the TV to rule out an intermediate device that does not pass HDR.

The picture is washed out or blacks are crushed

  • Set RGB Range back to Automatic on the Switch 2.
  • Check whether the TV input is configured for Full or Limited RGB.
  • Match the console and TV range before changing brightness or contrast.
  • Disable unusual picture presets while testing, then re-enable only features that do not damage black detail.

The screen is blank or repeatedly reconnects

  1. Power off the TV and Switch 2, then reconnect the dock, AC adapter and HDMI cable firmly.
  2. Use the NGN-01 adapter and an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
  3. Try a different HDMI input with enhanced mode enabled.
  4. Remove an AV receiver, switch or soundbar temporarily and connect the dock directly to the TV.
  5. Set Resolution to Automatic after the direct connection is established.

Settings by TV type and playing style

Your setup Console choice TV choice Main trade-off
4K TV, detail-focused single-player games 4K; 120Hz Output may remain enabled but 4K is capped at 60 fps Game Mode, ALLM, HDR if supported Maximum output detail, not 120-fps output
120-Hz TV, a game with confirmed 120-Hz support 1080p or 1440p; 120Hz Output enabled Game Mode/ALLM and the TV’s high-bandwidth HDMI mode Higher refresh potential at lower output resolution
1080p TV or unknown display Automatic, then 1080p if needed Game Mode; HDR only if the TV supports it Simplest compatibility, limited by the panel
HDR TV connected through an AV device Automatic while testing, then the desired fixed mode Enhanced HDMI mode on the correct port Intermediate equipment may limit HDR or refresh support

How to decide between picture quality and responsiveness

Start with the type of game you are playing and the capabilities you can verify. If the title has no 120-Hz option or the TV cannot accept 120 Hz from the dock, selecting 1080p will not create a measurable 120-fps mode. Conversely, selecting 4K does not guarantee that a game renders internally at 4K, but it does set the dock’s maximum output resolution and preserves the sharpest compatible signal.

For a mixed library, Automatic resolution with ALLM enabled is the least disruptive everyday choice. Switch to a fixed 4K output for detail-focused sessions, or to 1080p/1440p when you are deliberately using a confirmed 120-Hz title. Keep HDR and RGB settings consistent with the TV rather than changing them per game unless a title’s own HDR implementation requires an adjustment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the available evidence does—and does not—establish

Nintendo documents the 4K output ceiling, the 60-fps maximum at 4K, the role of ALLM and the Ultra High Speed HDMI requirement. The exact 120-Hz behavior remains software- and display-dependent. No independent input-lag measurement or universal game-by-game 120-Hz list is established here, so avoid promises such as a guaranteed frame rate or a specific millisecond response for every television.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Nintendo Switch 2 output 4K at 120 Hz?

No. Nintendo states that frame rate is fixed to a maximum of 60 fps for 4K output. A 120-Hz setup requires a compatible game, TV and HDMI path, generally at 1080p or 1440p output.

Why is the 120Hz Output option visible when my game runs at 60 Hz?

The option can remain available even when the current software or connected TV cannot deliver 120 Hz. The game must support 120-Hz output, and the TV input and cable must support the required signal.

Can I reuse the original Nintendo Switch HDMI cable?

No. Nintendo says that cable is not Ultra High Speed and cannot be used to play Nintendo Switch 2 in TV mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should RGB Range be on for most TVs?

Use Automatic. Select Full only when the TV’s HDMI input is explicitly configured for Full RGB and the black level has been verified.
