For most people, the best starting point is a free test-pattern set such as AVS HD 709. It can expose crushed blacks, clipped whites, incorrect contrast, and obvious color or tint errors without extra hardware. If you need measured luminance, chromaticity, grayscale tracking, or repeatable HDR results, add a compatible colorimeter and calibration software. A Datacolor SpyderPro or Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro can measure the screen, while software such as Portrait Displays Calman Home turns those readings into adjustments. No single tool is best for every TV: patterns are inexpensive and visual, meters are quantitative, and compatibility with your exact TV, input, and picture mode determines whether a calibration is actually possible.

Use the same source path and picture mode you use for viewing. SDR and HDR have different targets, and a black-level check only means something when it is performed in the mode, input, and local-dimming configuration being evaluated.

Quick comparison of home TV calibration tools

Tool category What it measures Signal modes Setup and cost profile Best use
Pattern files or calibration discs Visual checks of clipping, black visibility, contrast, color bars, and tint Any mode for which you can play the pattern Usually free or inexpensive; play from USB, media server, or disc-compatible source Basic setup and troubleshooting without a meter
Datacolor SpyderPro Screen color and luminance patches; creates a profile through software Depends on the supported software and TV workflow; verify SDR and HDR support Physical colorimeter; display must be warmed and stabilized Measured home calibration when your TV and software are compatible
Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro Chromaticity and luminance through its optical and filter system Depends on the software and display workflow Physical colorimeter; often used for computer and video displays Owners who also profile monitors or editing displays
Portrait Displays Calman Home Calibration software; analyzes meter readings and guides adjustments Documented workflows for SDR and HDR Software layer; requires a compatible meter and dependable patterns Guided TV calibration rather than visual guesswork
Windows HDR Calibration app Windows output controls for maximum brightness and SDR/HDR color saturation HDR from a Windows-connected display Software for a PC-connected TV or monitor Improving the TV’s Windows HDR signal, not built-in streaming apps

What a calibration tool can—and cannot—tell you

Pattern files show errors by eye

A test pattern is a known image, not a sensor. A black-level or near-black pattern lets you look for the first visible bars above black. A white-clipping pattern shows whether high-level steps disappear into a flat white field. Color bars and tint patterns reveal gross hue or saturation errors. These checks are valuable because they work with almost any display and do not require a computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Patterns do not report absolute brightness, chromaticity coordinates, grayscale tracking, or Delta-E. The same pattern can look different because of room light, your eyes, the display’s automatic processing, or the source device. RTINGS summarizes the distinction clearly: “While a true calibration requires specialized equipment to measure the exact colors and light that your TV produces, there are plenty of things you can adjust at home without any special equipment.”

A colorimeter measures the panel’s output

A colorimeter is placed flush against the screen. It reads a sequence of color and luminance patches and sends the measurements to calibration software. The result can include luminance, chromaticity, white balance, grayscale behavior, and color-management errors. The meter is measuring the light coming from your particular panel, not merely checking whether a video signal contains the expected code values.

Colorimeters are practical for home use, but they are not automatically TV-compatible. Many consumer instruments are marketed primarily for computer-monitor profiling. Confirm that the software can control or guide your TV, that your model has the necessary calibration controls, and that the pattern source can deliver the required SDR and HDR signals.

Software coordinates the measurement

Calibration software displays or generates test patches, records the meter’s readings, and recommends changes. Portrait Displays Calman Home documents TV workflows for SDR and HDR. It uses a compatible meter and a reliable pattern source, then guides adjustments such as Brightness and Contrast to establish the usable range from black to peak white before evaluating low-brightness behavior and color-management charts.

Best pattern source for basic checks: AVS HD 709

AVS HD 709 patterns, referenced by RTINGS, are a strong no-meter starting point. You can play them from a USB drive, a media server, or a disc-compatible player. Because the files are simply test images, they work with televisions that have no dedicated calibration app.

What you can check

  • Near-black visibility and whether shadow detail is crushed.
  • White clipping and whether contrast hides bright steps.
  • Basic contrast and brightness behavior.
  • Color bars, tint, and obvious channel imbalance.
  • Whether a source device is altering the signal before it reaches the TV.

How to use patterns correctly

  1. Copy or play the pattern files through the same device and HDMI input used for normal viewing.
  2. Select the exact picture mode you want to correct, such as the SDR mode used for SDR content.
  3. Disable temporary processing that changes the image while you measure or inspect it, unless that processing is intentionally part of your preferred viewing mode.
  4. View the patterns at your normal seating position and in the room lighting you normally use.
  5. Change one control at a time, return to a real program, and check that the adjustment did not create a new problem.

Pattern playback must follow the same source path and picture mode used for viewing. A pattern that looks correct from a disc player does not prove that a streaming app, game console, or computer input is configured identically.

Best meter-based option: Datacolor SpyderPro

Datacolor’s SpyderPro is a physical colorimeter. Its documented workflow hangs the instrument flush against the display, flashes colors, measures the screen, and creates a profile. Datacolor lists support for OLED, mini-LED, and other display technologies, and its support documentation states that SpyderPro can measure up to 12,000 cd/m² (nits).

Preparation requirements

  • Warm the panel before taking readings so the output has stabilized.
  • Keep direct light from striking the screen or the meter.
  • Reset picture controls or record the existing settings before starting.
  • Deactivate Auto Brightness and HDR dynamic modes when the calibration procedure calls for a static signal. Datacolor’s setup guidance specifically says to “Deactivate any Auto Brightness or HDR mode settings before you start calibrating.”

Compatibility warning

SpyderPro’s ability to read a display does not guarantee that it can write a usable calibration to your television. Check support for your exact TV model, operating system, software package, and intended signal path. Some workflows calibrate through a computer, some use a supported TV application, and others rely on an external pattern generator. If the software cannot address the TV’s controls or load a profile for the device that actually displays your content, the meter may produce measurements without delivering a meaningful TV calibration.

Alternative meter: Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro

The Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro is an X-Rite-powered colorimeter with an optical and filter system designed for fast measurement of modern LED and wide-gamut LCD displays. It is a sensible choice if you also profile computer monitors or a video-editing display, because the same instrument can serve those jobs.

Its manufacturer documentation is oriented toward monitor profiling rather than listing every smart-TV workflow. Before buying, verify that the calibration software supports your television model and the connection you intend to use. Check separately for SDR, HDR10, and Dolby Vision support; support for one mode does not imply support for the others.

Software layer: Portrait Displays Calman Home

Calman Home is not a sensor. It is the software layer that coordinates a compatible meter and test-pattern source. Its documented TV procedure covers SDR and HDR, sets Brightness and Contrast to establish the dynamic range from black to peak white, checks low-brightness levels, and evaluates color-management charts.

What you need alongside Calman

  • A supported colorimeter, correctly positioned on the screen.
  • A pattern source that can output the required resolution, color space, and HDR format.
  • A TV with accessible calibration controls or a supported integration path.
  • A stable picture mode with automatic brightness and dynamic processing configured according to the workflow.

Buying software alone does not turn visual patterns into measured calibration. Conversely, a meter without software that understands your TV may only provide raw readings.

This is a source-specific correction. It does not replace a full HDMI-source TV calibration for built-in streaming apps, a game console, a disc player, or another input. If the TV is used with several sources, each source and picture mode may need its own verification.

Step-by-step: check color without a meter

  1. Choose the correct signal. For SDR, use Rec.709 color bars or patches. Roku’s expert-picture documentation uses Rec.709 as the SDR reference space. For HDR, use HDR test patterns delivered as HDR rather than relying on an SDR file.
  2. Set the intended picture mode. Movie, Cinema, Filmmaker, Game, and other modes can have separate controls. Do not adjust one mode while watching another.
  3. Display color bars or a color patch sequence. Look for an obvious red, green, or blue cast in neutral areas and for unequal bar intensity that indicates a gross channel problem.
  4. Adjust tint only when the pattern calls for it. Tint controls are generally most relevant to the color-bar relationship; changing them to fix a grayscale cast can create a different error.
  5. Check real content. Use familiar skin tones, neutral whites, foliage, and blue skies to make sure the correction is not visually worse outside the test pattern.

Visual inspection can identify large errors, but it cannot establish exact chromaticity or color-volume performance. A meter and software are required for those measurements.

Step-by-step: check brightness and white clipping

  1. Warm the TV and stabilize the room. Let the panel operate long enough to reach a steady state, and avoid sunlight or changing lamp levels during the check.
  2. Open a white-clipping pattern. Increase or decrease Contrast so that the highest intended bars remain distinguishable without making the image unnaturally dim.
  3. Check the source output. A player or computer can clip levels before the TV receives them. Keep the source’s range setting consistent with the TV’s expected range.
  4. Repeat in the actual mode. HDR and SDR often use different tone-mapping and peak-brightness behavior, so a correct SDR contrast setting is not proof that HDR is correct.
  5. Use a meter for a numeric target. When a workflow specifies a luminance target, only a calibrated meter can tell you whether the screen reaches it.

Peak brightness is not a single permanent number on many modern televisions. Automatic brightness limiters, local dimming, content windows, room light, and HDR tone mapping can all change the measured result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step: check black level and shadow detail

  1. Use a near-black flashing pattern. Display the pattern in the exact input and picture mode under test.
  2. Find the first bars above black. You want the earliest intended steps to be visible without lifting the entire black field to gray.
  3. Look for crushed shadows. If several near-black bars merge, dark detail is being clipped.
  4. Look for raised blacks. If the whole screen is visibly lifted when it should be black, check the source range, HDMI black-level setting, room reflections, and local-dimming behavior.
  5. Repeat with typical content. Confirm that a change that reveals a test bar does not make films or games look hazy.

Black-level evaluation is mode-specific. OLED pixels, LCD backlights, local-dimming algorithms, viewing angle, and ambient light produce different practical results. Dolby’s professional HDR display guideline cites an ideal Tier 1 black-level target of 0.001 nits or lower; that is a professional reference, not a universal living-room requirement for every television.

How to perform a meter-based calibration

  1. Document the starting state. Record the TV model, firmware, input, picture mode, source device, and current settings so you can undo changes.
  2. Choose the signal mode. Decide whether you are calibrating SDR, HDR10, or Dolby Vision. Treat each as a separate workflow unless the software explicitly supports linked controls.
  3. Warm the panel. Follow the meter and software instructions, keeping room lighting stable.
  4. Place the meter. Hang or rest it flush against the display as directed. Prevent stray light from entering around the sensor.
  5. Connect the pattern source. The source must output the correct resolution, range, color space, and HDR metadata for the mode under test.
  6. Measure the baseline. Let the software read grayscale, luminance, and color patches before changing controls.
  7. Set black-to-white range. Use Brightness and Contrast to establish the usable dynamic range, then check low-brightness levels and peak white.
  8. Refine grayscale and color. Apply only the controls the workflow identifies, such as white balance and color-management adjustments. Re-measure after each meaningful change.
  9. Save by mode and input. Label settings clearly, because a calibration stored for one HDMI input or picture mode may not affect another.
  10. Validate with content. Check dark scenes, bright highlights, skin tones, and motion to catch processing changes that a patch sequence does not expose.

SDR, HDR10, and Dolby Vision are separate jobs

SDR is normally evaluated against the Rec.709 reference space. HDR uses different transfer functions, peak-light expectations, color volume, and tone-mapping behavior. A TV can be accurate in SDR and still clip HDR highlights or map HDR shadows poorly.

HDR10 calibration depends on the display’s HDR mode and the metadata delivered by the source. Dolby Vision adds its own processing and compatibility requirements. Confirm that the software, meter workflow, pattern generator, and TV model explicitly support the format you intend to adjust. If a product page only discusses monitor profiling or SDR, do not assume that it can calibrate Dolby Vision.

Choosing the right tool for your situation

You only want to fix obvious errors

Use AVS HD 709 patterns. They provide the highest value when the goal is to correct clipping, crushed blacks, contrast, or a conspicuous tint without buying hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need measured brightness and grayscale

Choose a compatible colorimeter such as Datacolor SpyderPro or Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro, then pair it with software that supports your TV. Confirm compatibility before purchase rather than relying on the sensor’s advertised display list.

You already calibrate computer monitors

Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro may fit well because it is designed for modern LED and wide-gamut LCD displays and can serve monitor-profiling work. TV compatibility remains a separate check.

You want a guided TV procedure

Use a supported meter with Portrait Displays Calman Home and a dependable pattern source. The software can guide SDR and HDR measurements, but it cannot compensate for an unsupported TV or an incorrect signal path.

Your TV is mainly a Windows monitor

Start with Microsoft’s Windows HDR Calibration app for the Windows HDR signal. Use a full TV calibration workflow only if you also need consistent results from built-in apps or other source devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common failure modes and fixes

The meter reports implausible brightness

Recheck warm-up time, sensor placement, room reflections, source metadata, and automatic brightness controls. A dynamic HDR mode or a changing test window can make repeated readings legitimately different.

Patterns look correct but movies look wrong

Verify that the pattern and movie use the same source, HDMI range, picture mode, and processing options. Streaming apps and external players may not share settings.

Near-black detail is missing

Check the source’s range setting against the TV’s HDMI black-level setting, then repeat the near-black pattern in the exact mode being watched. Local dimming and OLED black handling can alter the appearance without a simple Brightness-control fix.

HDR looks dim after calibration

Confirm that the source is actually outputting HDR, that the TV entered its HDR picture mode, and that tone mapping or an automatic brightness limiter is not being mistaken for a calibration error. Do not use SDR targets for HDR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The software cannot connect to the television

Use the meter for measurement only if necessary, and follow a pattern-based workflow for manual corrections. A profile is useful only when the display path can load or apply it; unsupported smart-TV integrations cannot be made reliable by changing random controls.

Bottom line

Start with AVS HD 709 patterns for free, source-specific checks of color bars, white clipping, and near-black detail. Move to a Datacolor SpyderPro or Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro only when you need measured luminance and color, and verify TV and software compatibility first. Pair a supported meter with Calman Home for a guided SDR/HDR workflow, or use Windows HDR Calibration when the television is specifically serving as a Windows display. Treat SDR, HDR10, and Dolby Vision as separate calibration targets, and never interpret a professional black-level specification as a mandatory living-room number.
