For four-player Star Fox, use one compatible controller per player, enable the television’s Game or low-latency mode, turn off motion smoothing, and preserve a 4:3 image when playing the original Nintendo 64 version. On Switch 2, start Battle Mode, choose Local Battle, set the console to four players, pair the other controllers, and review Battle Settings with Y before launching the match.

The ideal setup differs by version. Star Fox 64 on an original console or Virtual Console needs N64-style controls and careful handling of legacy video scaling. The Switch 2 release offers more per-player controls, including vehicle-specific inversion, a reticle, rumble, button combos and optional mouse targeting. The settings below separate the two systems so you can configure a group session without guessing.

What four-player Star Fox actually supports

Star Fox 64 supports simultaneous four-player versus play. Nintendo lists three multiplayer formats: Point Match, Battle Royal and Time Battle. Each player flies against the others in the same local session, rather than taking turns through the single-player campaign.

Mode How it works Best for
Point Match Players compete for the highest score during the match. Longer sessions in which players want a running score and several opportunities to recover.
Battle Royal Players fight until one pilot remains the winner. Elimination-style rounds and groups that want a clear last-player-standing result.
Time Battle The match is organized around a defined time period. Quick rounds or an evening in which everyone should play the same number of timed matches.

The current Switch 2 Battle Mode also supports up to four local players. Its setup flow is different from the original console, so do not expect simply plugging four controllers into a television or dock to configure the game automatically.

  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
  • Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.

Choose the right controller for each version

Original Nintendo 64 or Virtual Console

Use one compatible N64-layout controller for every player. The three-pronged N64 arrangement places the analog stick in the center and the C buttons on the right, which keeps steering, aiming and vehicle actions in their familiar positions. A modern gamepad with two symmetrical sticks can work only if the game or platform maps it appropriately; it does not reproduce the original hand positions as reliably as an N64-style pad.

Connect all four controllers before entering the VS menu. On an original console, insert each controller into a controller port and confirm that every stick and button registers. On a Virtual Console installation, connect the platform’s supported controller adapters or paired pads before launching the game, then check the host system’s controller assignment screen.

Inspect old N64 sticks before inviting a group

Wear in an original analog stick can make a pilot drift, turn slowly or fail to return to center. Move each stick through a full circle, release it and watch whether the on-screen reticle or ship settles at neutral. A loose stick is especially disruptive in a four-player match because the affected player may appear to be steering continuously. If one controller is unreliable, move that player to a replacement before the match instead of trying to compensate with television settings.

A practical replacement option

An N64-style replacement such as the 8BitDo N64 2.4G controller preserves the original button layout in a modern shell. Its receiver plugs directly into an original Nintendo 64, making it a useful option when several original pads have worn sticks. Verify the exact receiver, console support and current availability before buying; wireless protocols and package contents can change between revisions.

Switch 2 controllers

Switch 2 uses paired wireless or compatible wired controllers rather than the original console’s four controller ports. An N64-layout controller is still the easiest choice for players who want the classic hand positions, but the important requirement is that each pad be recognized by the console and assigned to a separate player. Pair and test every controller before opening Battle Mode, especially when mixing controller types.

Best television settings for the original N64 version

There is no single Nintendo calibration that fits every television. Use the following as starting points, then adjust for your panel’s input lag, scaling and room lighting. Menu names vary by manufacturer, but the goals are consistent: minimize processing delay, keep the game’s original shape and avoid processing that obscures fast targets.

Television control Recommended starting point Why it helps Star Fox
Picture mode Game, Low Latency or the equivalent gaming preset Reduces image processing that can add delay between a stick movement and the ship’s response.
Aspect ratio 4:3 for an original N64 signal Prevents the 4:3 image from being stretched across a widescreen panel and keeps HUD proportions correct.
Motion interpolation Off Avoids artificial frames, halos and extra delay around ships, lasers and split-screen boundaries.
Sharpness Low or moderate, near the display’s neutral point Aggressive sharpening exaggerates the N64’s low-resolution edges and can make text and reticles shimmer.
Noise reduction and enhancement filters Off initially These filters can soften small targets or add processing time. Re-enable only if a specific display produces distracting noise.
Brightness High enough that dark arenas and each player’s HUD remain readable Four-player split-screen information is easier to follow when shadows do not swallow radar, reticles or status indicators.

Keep the original 4:3 image

Set the television to 4:3, Original, or another mode that adds vertical side bars instead of stretching the picture. Do not use a zoom mode to fill the panel. Stretching makes circles and cockpit elements look wide and can hide the edges of the playfield where an opponent may appear.

Use a CRT, scaler or HDMI path when the built-in input is poor

A CRT provides the most period-appropriate presentation, with the soft scanline appearance many players associate with the original game. If a flat-panel television has no suitable legacy input or scales the composite signal badly, an N64-compatible HDMI modification or an external upscaler can provide a cleaner, lower-lag signal. Some devices offer CRT-style filters; use them lightly so scanlines do not obscure small multiplayer targets. An HDMI mod, an external upscaler and a CRT-style filter solve different problems, so choose according to whether your priority is latency, clarity or the original look.

Connect and test before the match

  1. Connect the console or converter to the television and select the input used by the game.
  2. Activate Game or Low Latency mode for that input, not merely for another HDMI port.
  3. Set the aspect ratio to 4:3 and disable motion interpolation.
  4. Lower sharpness and enhancement controls to a neutral or moderate level.
  5. Launch a versus screen and have all four players move, fire and pause briefly. If controls feel delayed, check for a separate television “instant game response” setting or an audio/video receiver adding processing.

Set up four players on Switch 2

Switch 2’s Battle Mode has an explicit local-player setup. Complete it in this order:

  1. Start Star Fox and choose Battle Mode.
  2. Select Local Battle.
  3. Change the number of players using the console to four.
  4. Pair each additional controller when the game prompts you. Confirm that every pad appears under a different player assignment rather than sharing one profile.
  5. Before the match begins, have the host press Y to open Battle Settings.
  6. Let each player select a pilot, review the shared settings and start the battle only after everyone can see their own controls and HUD.

If the game reports fewer than four players, leave the local lobby, open the Switch 2 controller pairing screen, pair the missing pad, and return to Battle Mode. Reassigning controllers after the match has started may not be available for every option, so correct the roster before selecting pilots.

Switch 2 options worth changing before a match

Open the game’s Options or Battle Settings before starting. Some settings cannot be changed while Battle Mode is already in progress, so settle individual preferences in the lobby.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Recommended approach When to change it
Reticle Enable it for a first session and for players who have difficulty judging the center of the screen. Leave it enabled unless the visual marker distracts an experienced player.
Y-axis inversion Choose independently for each player and each vehicle: Arwing, Landmaster and Blue-Marine. Set it before the match; a player who normally inverts flight may still prefer a non-inverted ground or aquatic vehicle.
Rumble Leave on for tactile feedback, or turn it off for a player who finds vibration distracting. Change it before launching so nobody has to pause a live round.
Button Combos Enable for players who want original-game input combinations or need easier access to certain commands. Agree on one approach for a casual group, but allow experienced players to keep the standard inputs.
Camera rotation Use each player’s preferred camera behavior; keep it consistent during a tournament. Set in the options screen because in-match availability can be limited.
Mouse targeting Use only when a player deliberately wants pointer-based aiming and has a supported mouse setup. Test it before the lobby starts; it changes the feel of aiming and is not necessary for controller play.
Mouse sensitivity Adjust gradually if mouse targeting is enabled. Make small changes in practice rather than changing sensitivity between competitive rounds.

Y-axis inversion is vehicle-specific, not necessarily one global switch. Ask each player to test all vehicles they expect to use. A setting that feels natural in the Arwing can feel backward in the Landmaster or Blue-Marine.

Display settings for Switch 2 four-player play

Use the television’s Game or low-latency mode for the Switch 2 input as well. Disable motion interpolation and other frame-smoothing features. Unlike the original N64 signal, the Switch 2 output is designed for a modern widescreen display, so leave the console and television at their normal widescreen setting unless your particular display is adding unwanted cropping.

Set brightness and contrast so the four-player HUDs remain legible without washing out the arena. Check the corners of the screen from the seats where players will actually sit; a setting that looks fine directly in front of the panel may hide dark details for a player viewing at an angle. If the television has a separate HDR or dynamic-contrast mode, compare it in the lobby and keep the mode that preserves both dark backgrounds and bright weapon effects.

Pick the right multiplayer format for your group

Point Match for a score ladder

Use Point Match when the group wants a cumulative result rather than one mistake ending a player’s night. Record each round’s score on paper or in a shared note, then rotate seating or pilots between rounds if everyone wants equal variety. Keep television brightness and controller assignments unchanged so the score reflects play rather than a new setup each round.

Battle Royal for short elimination rounds

Battle Royal works well when the group wants immediate pressure and a clear winner. Agree in advance whether eliminated players watch the next round or rotate back in. Because the mode can end quickly, verify every controller and reticle before the start screen instead of spending the first minute diagnosing a missing input.

Time Battle for predictable sessions

Time Battle is useful when four players have a fixed amount of time. Choose a common round length, keep the same television and controller settings for each game, and use a visible timer or the game’s own timing rules to determine the winner. Timed rounds also make it easier to rotate players without one person receiving substantially more play time.

Four-player troubleshooting

The picture is stretched or blurry

  • On original N64 hardware, switch the television from 16:9 or Zoom to 4:3 or Original.
  • Turn off motion smoothing, noise reduction and edge-enhancement filters.
  • If the television’s legacy input produces poor scaling, test an N64-compatible HDMI mod or external upscaler.
  • For a CRT-style appearance on a flat panel, use a restrained CRT filter rather than maximum scanline strength.

Controls feel delayed

  • Confirm Game or Low Latency mode is enabled for the active input.
  • Bypass an AV receiver, soundbar or switch that may be buffering the video signal.
  • On Switch 2, verify that each controller is paired directly and not intermittently disconnecting.
  • On an original N64, test a different controller port and inspect the stick for mechanical wear.

One player cannot move or is controlling another pilot

  • Exit to the console’s controller assignment screen and pair or reconnect the affected pad.
  • Return to Battle Mode and set the number of players using the console to four again.
  • Confirm that each controller is assigned to a separate player before selecting pilots.
  • For an original N64, reseat the controller plug and test the pad in another port.

A vehicle feels backward after changing inversion

Open the options and check the Arwing, Landmaster and Blue-Marine entries separately. Change only the vehicle that feels wrong, then test a short practice movement before returning to the lobby. Do not assume one Y-axis choice applies identically to all three vehicles.

The HUD or reticle is hard to see

  • Raise television brightness slightly while preserving black detail.
  • Disable aggressive sharpening that can make thin text shimmer.
  • Enable the Switch 2 reticle for the affected player.
  • Move seating closer or reduce glare rather than relying on extreme contrast settings.

A reliable pre-match checklist

  • Four compatible controllers are connected, paired and assigned to distinct players.
  • Every analog stick returns to neutral without drift.
  • The television is in Game or Low Latency mode.
  • Motion interpolation is off.
  • The original N64 image is set to 4:3; Switch 2 is using the display’s normal widescreen presentation.
  • Sharpness and enhancement filters are moderate or disabled.
  • Each Switch 2 player has checked reticle, rumble, camera, Button Combos and vehicle-specific Y-axis inversion.
  • The group has selected Point Match, Battle Royal or Time Battle before launching.
  • A short test movement confirms that steering, firing and pause input work for all four players.

Recommended four-player configuration

For an original Nintendo 64, connect four N64-layout controllers, use a 4:3 CRT or a low-latency upscaled picture, disable motion smoothing and keep sharpness moderate. For Switch 2, pair four tested controllers, choose Battle Mode followed by Local Battle, set four players, open Battle Settings with Y, enable the reticle for visibility and let each player set inversion separately for the Arwing, Landmaster and Blue-Marine. These choices prioritize responsive controls and readable multiplayer information without changing the character of the original game.
