For Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), start with an HDR-capable television in Game Mode, connect the console directly with an HDMI 2.1-capable cable, disable automatic picture processing and Dynamic Tone Mapping, and enable HGIG when the television offers it. On PS5, set HDR to On When Supported and run Adjust HDR. On Xbox Series X|S, run the console’s display and HDR calibration tools, then verify that the television reports HDR and the refresh rate you expect.

Rockstar officially lists GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date. Its official site labels the PS5 version “Plays Best On.” A launch 60-fps target, named graphics modes, a VRR operating range and a PS5 Pro performance specification have not been published in the authoritative material currently available, so those settings should not be treated as confirmed.

What is officially known about GTA 6 display support

Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the supported GTA VI platforms. The official game site gives November 19, 2026 as the release date and describes the PS5 version as “Plays Best On.” Sony also says the game uses PS5 capabilities including DualSense haptics, Tempest 3D AudioTech and the console’s SSD.

Those platform and feature statements do not establish a frame-rate target. No authoritative launch specification reviewed here confirms a 60-fps mode, a 40-fps mode, a particular quality or performance preset, a VRR range, or a PS5 Pro-specific mode. A television can be technically capable of 120 Hz while a game still renders at a different or variable rate; do not infer GTA VI’s frame rate from the television’s advertised refresh rate.

The settings below therefore separate what Rockstar and Sony document from choices that are sensible for an HDR console setup. They prepare the display without promising an undocumented GTA VI mode.

Recommended setup in the right order

  1. Prepare the television input. If the TV has a setting called Enhanced, Input Signal Plus, HDMI Deep Color, 4K Enhanced or a similar full-bandwidth option, enable it for the HDMI port used by the console. The exact label depends on the manufacturer.
  2. Select Game Mode. This reduces processing that can add controller-to-screen delay. Rockstar’s HDR troubleshooting guidance specifically says to enable the Game Mode preset when available.
  3. Turn on HDR for that input. Leave the TV’s basic HDR capability enabled, but turn off automatic picture processing, AI enhancement, Smart, Dynamic and Adaptive picture features.
  4. Disable Dynamic Tone Mapping. Use the TV’s HGIG option instead when it is available. HGIG is intended to keep the display’s tone mapping from overriding the game’s HDR calibration.
  5. Connect the console directly. Use an HDMI 2.1-capable cable from the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S to the TV. Avoid routing the signal through an older soundbar, receiver or HDMI switch until the direct connection works.
  6. Calibrate HDR at the console. Follow the PS5 or Xbox calibration screens with the TV already in Game Mode and HDR active.
  7. Enable VRR only after the basic signal is stable. If both devices report VRR support, turn it on and check a real game. GTA VI’s exact VRR behavior has not been documented.
  8. Wait for the game’s own calibration screen. Keep in-game brightness and HDR sliders at their defaults until GTA VI presents its reference image, then adjust while looking at that image rather than a television demo clip.

TV settings for HDR and low input delay

Game Mode

Game Mode is the first picture preset to select. It normally bypasses frame interpolation, noise reduction and other video processing that can make controls feel delayed. Rockstar’s wording is to enable the Game Mode preset if the display provides one; it does not require a particular manufacturer’s name.

Game Mode can look less vivid than a showroom or Movie preset because it removes processing. That is expected. Use the Game Mode-specific controls for brightness, contrast, local dimming and HDR rather than switching to another preset after calibration.

HDR and automatic enhancements

Disable picture features that alter the image scene by scene. Rockstar specifically calls out AI enhancement, Smart, Dynamic and Adaptive picture settings. These controls can change brightness or sharpness during play and make a carefully calibrated HDR image inconsistent.

Turn off motion interpolation, often labelled Motion Smoothing, TruMotion, Auto Motion Plus or a similar name. Interpolation adds generated frames and can introduce a soap-opera appearance, halos around moving objects or extra latency. It is not a substitute for a game’s frame-rate mode.

Dynamic Tone Mapping and HGIG

Dynamic Tone Mapping continually remaps highlights to fit the panel. For a game with an HDR calibration screen, that can make the console’s paper-white and peak-brightness adjustments unreliable. Disable Dynamic Tone Mapping for the GTA VI input.

Enable HGIG when the TV offers it. Rockstar’s support guidance specifically recommends enabling HGIG features if the display supports them. Some televisions expose HGIG as a tone-mapping choice; others place it under a game HDR menu. If no HGIG setting exists, leave Dynamic Tone Mapping off and use the TV’s neutral or static HDR option.

Brightness, contrast, local dimming and sharpness

Rockstar advises adjusting brightness, contrast, local dimming and sharpness as needed while HDR is active. Make those changes only after HDR has engaged and Game Mode is selected.

  • Brightness: Use the console or game’s HDR pattern first. Raising it until every dark detail is visible can lift blacks and make night scenes gray.
  • Contrast: Do not increase it simply to make the picture brighter. If bright details disappear in an HDR test pattern, reduce it until the reference steps return.
  • Local dimming: On a TV with zones, keep it enabled if you prefer stronger black levels, but inspect subtitles, street lights and other bright objects against dark backgrounds for blooming. The best level is panel-dependent.
  • Sharpness: Keep it near the TV’s neutral point. Excessive sharpness adds outlines to text and geometry instead of creating real detail.

There is no single numeric value that works across TV panels. Different peak brightness, black level and local-dimming designs require different positions, which is why the game’s reference image should be the final authority.

HDMI 2.1: what you need and what it does not guarantee

Rockstar’s HDR troubleshooting checklist calls for an HDMI 2.1-capable cable. Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for the direct console-to-TV connection, especially if you intend to use the display’s high-bandwidth modes. The cable should be connected directly while troubleshooting; adding an older receiver or switch introduces another possible bandwidth or handshake failure.

HDMI 2.1 support does not guarantee that GTA VI will render at 120 frames per second or even at 60 frames per second. It provides a capable signal path. The console, game and television still determine the actual resolution, HDR format, refresh rate and VRR behavior.

If HDR is unavailable, first check that the TV’s enhanced input mode is enabled and that the console is connected to an HDMI port that supports the required features. Test the same cable and port with the console’s display-information screen before changing picture controls.

Best PS5 settings for GTA 6 HDR

Enable HDR only for supported content

On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR and choose On When Supported. Sony documents this option so that HDR-capable games and apps use HDR while non-HDR games and apps remain in SDR. It avoids forcing an HDR conversion on everything the console displays.

Run the PS5 HDR adjustment

With the TV already in Game Mode and HDR active, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR. Follow each screen’s instructions and stop at the point where the symbol is barely visible, as directed by the PS5 wizard. Do not perform this step with Dynamic Tone Mapping or a vivid picture preset enabled; changing the TV afterward changes the result.

Check the output information

After calibration, confirm that the PS5 sees the television as HDR-capable and that the expected resolution and refresh options are available. If an option disappears, return to the TV’s enhanced HDMI setting and test the direct cable connection before lowering other settings.

Use the platform features without changing HDR controls

The PS5 version uses DualSense haptics, Tempest 3D AudioTech and the console SSD according to Sony’s platform announcement. Those features are independent of the HDR slider, so enabling them does not require a different television picture preset. Use the console’s audio output and controller settings separately from the display calibration.

Best Xbox Series X|S settings for GTA 6 HDR

Run the console’s display calibration

Open the Xbox display settings and use its HDR or television calibration tools with the TV in Game Mode. Menu wording can change with Xbox system software and differs slightly between Series X and Series S, so follow the labels shown on the console rather than a fixed online menu path.

When the wizard displays black-level and highlight patterns, adjust the TV and console as a pair. Keep Dynamic Tone Mapping disabled and HGIG enabled where available. The goal is to make the darkest reference detail barely distinguishable and preserve the brightest reference detail without clipping.

Verify the signal before launching the game

Use the Xbox display-information screen to confirm that the TV reports HDR and the refresh rate you intend to use. If the console reports only SDR, reconnect directly to the TV, select the input’s enhanced mode and repeat the check. Do not assume the cable is at fault until the same port and cable have been tested with the console’s information screen.

Series X and Series S expectations

Both Xbox Series X and Series S are officially listed as GTA VI platforms. The available official information does not publish separate GTA VI resolution, frame-rate or HDR targets for the two consoles. Treat any claimed Series X or Series S performance mode as provisional until Rockstar documents it.

VRR, 120 Hz and smooth performance

Enable VRR only when both devices confirm it

If the TV and console both expose a VRR option, enable it after HDR and the basic HDMI connection work. VRR can reduce visible tearing and uneven pacing when a game’s frame time varies inside the supported range. It cannot raise the game’s frame rate or turn a fixed 30-fps output into 60 fps.

GTA VI’s official VRR range and behavior have not been published. Check the result in actual gameplay rather than relying only on a TV status badge. If you see repeated black screens, flicker or dropouts, disable VRR temporarily and test the direct HDMI path again.

Do not select a refresh rate solely because the TV advertises it

A 120-Hz panel can accept several signals, but the game may use a different internal frame rate. Choose the console output that remains stable and that the TV reports correctly. Until Rockstar publishes a performance-mode list, there is no evidence-based GTA VI setting that promises 60 fps, 40 fps or 120 fps.

TV and setup comparison criteria

When comparing televisions for GTA VI, compare the features that affect calibration and signal reliability rather than choosing by a model’s marketing refresh-rate number.

Criterion What to check Why it matters for GTA VI
HDR controls Separate HDR Game preset, independent brightness and contrast controls, and a usable calibration screen Lets the console’s HDR adjustment remain consistent instead of being overridden by a vivid preset.
HGIG A documented HGIG or static tone-mapping option Follows Rockstar’s recommendation and avoids an extra layer of dynamic remapping.
Game Mode latency Measured input latency in the HDR Game preset Lower processing delay makes driving, aiming and camera movement feel more immediate.
HDMI 2.1 bandwidth An HDMI 2.1-capable input and a direct compatible cable Matches Rockstar’s HDR troubleshooting requirement and preserves high-bandwidth output options.
4K support Native 4K panel and a console input that accepts the desired 4K signal Prevents the TV from becoming the resolution bottleneck.
VRR compatibility VRR support on the exact HDMI port, with a stable range May smooth frame-time variation, although GTA VI’s range is not yet documented.
Local dimming Whether the panel has zones and how Game HDR handles blooming Affects shadow detail, highlight intensity and the visibility of bright objects on dark scenes.
Console features PS5 DualSense, Tempest 3D AudioTech and SSD features, or equivalent Xbox integration These platform capabilities are part of the PS5 version’s documented feature set but are separate from HDR picture quality.

Troubleshooting common HDR and smoothness problems

The picture looks gray or washed out

  • Confirm that the TV actually switched to HDR when the game or console HDR screen opened.
  • Check that the console is connected directly to the TV and that the input’s enhanced or full-bandwidth mode is enabled.
  • Disable Dynamic Tone Mapping and automatic picture enhancements.
  • Run the console’s HDR adjustment again after the TV settings are stable.

Night scenes are too bright or black detail is missing

  • Return the TV to Game Mode and verify that a vivid or dynamic preset did not replace it.
  • Lower TV brightness only while viewing the game’s or console’s HDR reference pattern; do not use a random streaming video as the test.
  • Check local-dimming behavior. A different level can restore shadow detail or reduce blooming, depending on the panel.

Highlights clip or street lights bloom excessively

  • Disable Dynamic Tone Mapping and enable HGIG if available.
  • Reduce contrast only enough to recover the missing reference steps.
  • Inspect the result with local dimming at its normal Game HDR setting. Some blooming is a panel characteristic rather than a cable or console fault.

Input feels delayed

  • Confirm Game Mode is active for the HDMI input used by the console.
  • Turn off motion interpolation, noise reduction and other processing controls.
  • Check that the TV did not leave Game Mode when HDR engaged.

HDR will not engage or the screen repeatedly blanks

  • Connect the console straight to the TV with the HDMI 2.1-capable cable.
  • Try the TV port documented for enhanced or high-bandwidth signals.
  • Temporarily disable VRR and retest HDR.
  • Use the PS5 or Xbox display-information screen to identify whether the failure is HDR detection, resolution negotiation or refresh-rate negotiation.

VRR causes flicker or dropouts

Turn VRR off, confirm that HDR works without it, then re-enable VRR after checking the direct connection. Because GTA VI’s VRR implementation and range are not published, a stable non-VRR signal is the appropriate fallback if the combination remains unreliable.

What to expect at launch

GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The official material currently identifies the platforms and PS5 features, and Rockstar provides general HDR troubleshooting guidance, but it does not publish a complete list of launch graphics modes or frame-rate targets. The practical approach is to prepare a correctly calibrated HDR Game Mode setup now and revisit the in-game sliders and performance options when Rockstar exposes them.

Until then, do not buy a television solely for a promised GTA VI 60-fps mode, and do not force a 120-Hz output on the assumption that it changes the game’s renderer. A direct HDMI 2.1 connection, stable HDR calibration, disabled processing, HGIG where supported and optional VRR are the settings with documented or clearly defined benefits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
