Ledger is the strongest all-around Trezor alternative for portfolios spread across many cryptocurrency networks. BitBox02 Nova is a focused choice with encrypted SD-card backups, Keystone suits people who want QR-based transfers on a large screen, and COLDCARD is the specialist option when you hold Bitcoin only and want a fully air-gapped signing workflow.
There is no universally safest hardware wallet. The right replacement depends on the assets you own, whether you can keep signing offline, how clearly you can verify a transaction on the device, how you back up recovery data, and which desktop or mobile wallet software you already use.
What makes a good Trezor alternative?
A hardware wallet keeps the private keys that control your cryptocurrency away from an internet-connected computer or phone. Transactions are prepared by wallet software, signed by the device, and then returned to the software for broadcasting. The security benefit comes from keeping the signing secret on the device rather than exposing it to a general-purpose operating system.

When comparing alternatives, evaluate the complete security model rather than a single feature or a vendor’s claim that a device is safer. These are the practical buying axes:
#1 Best Overall
- Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Asset coverage: Confirm that the exact coins, tokens, networks and account types you use are supported. A device can support a blockchain while a particular wallet application does not, or support a coin only through a compatible third-party wallet.
- Connection model: USB, Bluetooth, mobile connections and QR transfer each expose different data paths. Air-gapped signing can remove a cable or radio link, but it adds steps and requires compatible software.
- On-device verification: The screen should let you check the destination, amount and relevant transaction details before approving. A large display can make this review easier; a small display may require more scrolling.
- Tamper resistance: Secure elements and similar hardware protections are designed to make extraction of secrets more difficult if someone obtains the device.
- Backup and recovery: A recovery phrase, an encrypted removable backup, or an advanced multisig arrangement affects how you recover from loss, damage or theft. Convenience must not replace an offline, tested recovery plan.
- Source-code transparency: Open-source firmware or verifiable source allows more of the software and communication path to be inspected. Transparency and hardware protections are different advantages, not mutually exclusive proof of safety.
- Wallet compatibility: Check support in the wallet software you actually intend to use, including multisig, account derivation and transaction formats.
Quick comparison of the leading alternatives
| Device | Best fit | Assets and scope | Signing and connectivity | Verification and backup features | Transparency and protection |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ledger hardware wallet | Users managing many chains and tokens | Ledger says its devices support thousands of cryptocurrencies through Ledger Wallet; third-party wallets can be used when native support is unavailable | Uses the vendor’s device-and-wallet workflow; exact connection depends on model and compatible wallet | Review transactions on the device; recovery follows the device’s backup procedure | Secure Element-centered architecture; the vendor contrasts it with Trezor’s transparency-oriented approach |
| BitBox02 Nova Multi | Users who want a compact device and a convenient encrypted backup option | Multi edition lists Bitcoin, Ethereum, ERC-20, Cardano and Litecoin; a Bitcoin-only edition is also available | USB-C connection | On-device confirmation and optional encrypted SD-card backup | Secure element; support staff do not handle a customer’s recovery phrase |
| Keystone | People who prefer visible QR transfers and a large touch interface | Use depends on the compatible wallet and network; Bitcoin PSBT multisig is documented | Animated QR communication; microSD support for desktop-wallet compatibility | 4-inch touchscreen for transaction review; QR data can be checked during each transfer | Open-source firmware and Secure Element hardware |
| COLDCARD | Bitcoin-only users prioritizing air-gapped signing and advanced controls | Bitcoin only | Designed for fully air-gapped operation; signing can use removable media or QR-compatible workflows depending on the setup | On-screen destination verification, anti-phishing words and advanced multisig controls | Verifiable source code plus duress, brick-me and countdown-login features described by the vendor |
The table is a starting point, not a safety ranking. A broad-asset device is a poor fit if it cannot work with your wallet software, while an air-gapped Bitcoin specialist is unsuitable if you need Ethereum or other networks.
Ledger: the broad-asset alternative
Ledger’s official supported-assets information says its hardware wallets keep private keys offline and support thousands of cryptocurrencies through Ledger Wallet. If Ledger Wallet does not natively support an asset, the company says a compatible third-party wallet can be used. That combination makes Ledger the default shortlist option for people with a mixed portfolio or tokens spread across several networks.
Why choose Ledger
- Wide asset coverage: The vendor’s supported-assets page is the place to check a specific coin, token standard and network before buying.
- Third-party wallet route: Native support is not the only path. A compatible external wallet may provide access when Ledger Wallet does not.
- Secure Element design: Ledger centers its architecture on a Secure Element and presents that as a contrast to Trezor’s transparency-oriented model.
- Offline key storage: The company states that keeping private keys offline is more secure than keeping them online.
Trade-offs to consider
Broad support can mean a more complicated software matrix. Verify the exact application required for each asset, whether the account uses the expected derivation path, and whether the wallet supports the transaction type you need. A third-party wallet adds another interface to learn, so practice with a small amount before moving a large balance.
Who should select it?
Choose Ledger when your main problem with a Trezor replacement is asset breadth, not a desire for a completely disconnected signing workflow. It is especially suitable when you expect to manage several networks and want the option of third-party wallet integrations.
BitBox02 Nova: compact, backup-friendly storage
BitBox02 Nova combines a secure element, USB-C connectivity, on-device confirmation and an optional encrypted SD-card backup. The Multi edition lists Bitcoin, Ethereum, ERC-20, Cardano and Litecoin support, while a separate Bitcoin-only edition narrows the scope for users who do not need other networks.
Backup design
The encrypted SD-card option can make an additional recovery copy without replacing the recovery process documented for the device. Treat the card as sensitive information: store it offline, protect access to any password used to encrypt it, and keep it separate from the hardware wallet. A backup is useful only if you know how to restore it and have verified that the copy is readable.
Security and support boundaries
The device uses a secure element and asks you to confirm transactions on the device itself. BitBox states that support can assist with device use but never handles a user’s recovery phrase. That boundary matters: legitimate support should not need your phrase, PIN or passphrase.

|---|---|---|
| BitBox02 Nova Multi | You need Bitcoin plus Ethereum, ERC-20, Cardano or Litecoin support listed by the vendor | Check the current support list for the precise token and network before transferring funds |

Keystone: QR transfers and a large screen
Keystone’s documented design focuses on a 4-inch touchscreen, animated QR communication, microSD compatibility, open-source firmware and Secure Element hardware. The device also documents PSBT Bitcoin multisig support. This makes it attractive when you want to inspect transaction data on a larger display and avoid a direct cable or radio link during signing.
How the QR workflow works
- Prepare the unsigned transaction in a compatible wallet application.
- Display the transaction data as an animated QR sequence on the online or watch-only device.
- Scan the sequence with Keystone and review the transaction details on its touchscreen.
- Approve only after checking the destination and amount on the device.
- Let Keystone return the signed transaction as QR data.
- Scan the signed data back into the wallet application and broadcast it from the online device.
QR communication does not automatically make a transaction safe. Malware can still alter an unsigned transaction before you scan it, which is why the final destination and amount must be checked on the hardware wallet. Keystone says QR codes let users verify each transmission and help prevent sensitive information from leaking; the benefit depends on actually performing those checks.
Desktop and multisig considerations
Keystone documents microSD compatibility with desktop wallets such as Electrum and Wasabi, and PSBT support for Bitcoin multisig. Confirm the wallet’s current integration instructions, because a wallet may support one transaction format or multisig arrangement while not supporting another. Keep a written record of cosigner fingerprints and derivation details for any multisig setup.
Who should select it?
Choose Keystone if a large screen and QR-based, visibly separated transfer process are more important to you than the simplest USB workflow. It is a particularly logical fit for users who review Bitcoin PSBT transactions or want to keep signing data off a direct connection.

COLDCARD positions its devices as Bitcoin-only alternatives to Trezor. Its documentation highlights fully air-gapped operation, verifiable source code, anti-phishing protection, on-screen destination verification and advanced multisig controls. It also describes unusual coercion and tamper-response features, including a duress PIN that opens a decoy wallet, a brick-me PIN intended to destroy access on demand, a countdown login that can brick the device after tampering, and anti-phishing words.
What air-gapped means here
An air-gapped setup keeps the signing device off USB, Bluetooth and other direct data connections. You move unsigned and signed transaction data with a removable card or QR workflow, depending on the model and software combination. This reduces the number of communication paths but increases operational responsibility: you must maintain compatible wallet software, protect removable media and verify every transaction on the device.
Bitcoin-only is a deliberate constraint
COLDCARD is appropriate only if Bitcoin-only scope is acceptable. It cannot be the right answer for someone who needs Ethereum, ERC-20 tokens, Cardano, Litecoin or other networks. The narrower scope can be an advantage for Bitcoin specialists because there are fewer asset integrations to maintain, but it is a hard limitation for a multi-chain portfolio.

- More than just crypto: confirm your device is authentic with Genuine Check, manage all your logins with Ledger Security Key, detect common scams with Transaction Check and more.
- Industry-defining security: battle-tested by the Donjon's white hat hackers, protected by the Secure Element, and powered by Ledger OS.
- Connect effortlessly with Ledger Wallet: pair your secure Ledger signer with the all in one Ledger Wallet crypto app to manage thousands of digital assets across multiple devices and accounts with Ledger Sync from a single, secure dashboard.
- Playful, user-friendly design: monitor the market, compare rates and Clear Sign all transactions on the secure 2.8'' anti-glare, scratch-resistant touchscreen.
- This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.
Advanced controls require careful planning
Duress and destruction features are not casual settings. Before enabling them, understand exactly which PIN opens which wallet, what data can be lost, and how your legitimate recovery process works. Test the normal wallet and any decoy arrangement with small amounts and documented procedures; never experiment with a life-changing balance.

There is no evidence in the supplied manufacturer documentation for a universal winner. Ledger emphasizes Secure Element hardware and broad asset support, while Trezor is commonly associated with a transparency-oriented approach. Security depends on the complete system: firmware, wallet software, transaction verification, backup handling, physical access controls and your ability to avoid phishing.
Choose Ledger when the Secure Element model and broad asset coverage match your needs. Choose another alternative when you specifically value QR-only transfer, an encrypted SD-card backup, or Bitcoin-only air-gapped signing. Do not treat a Secure Element, open-source code or an air gap as a substitute for checking the address shown on the device.
How to choose by portfolio and threat model
If you hold many chains and token types
Start with Ledger’s current supported-assets list, then verify the exact network and wallet application for every holding. If an asset is not supported natively, check whether a reputable third-party wallet integration is available. Keep a small test balance until you have completed a send and receive cycle.
If you hold Bitcoin and a few listed networks
BitBox02 Nova Multi is a focused option when its listed Bitcoin, Ethereum, ERC-20, Cardano and Litecoin support covers your portfolio. Its USB-C connection and optional encrypted SD-card backup favor a straightforward setup with an additional backup method.
If you want QR-based separation
Keystone is the clearest fit for users who want animated QR transfers, a 4-inch touchscreen and documented microSD compatibility. Make transaction review a mandatory step rather than an optional convenience.
If you hold Bitcoin only and want maximum workflow isolation
COLDCARD is the specialist choice for fully air-gapped signing, verifiable source code and advanced Bitcoin multisig controls. Accept the Bitcoin-only limitation before purchasing.

If physical coercion is part of your threat model
Consider whether duress or tamper-response features are genuinely necessary and whether you can operate them safely. A complicated emergency feature that you have not rehearsed can create more risk than a simpler, well-tested backup plan.

- Buy through an official channel. Inspect packaging and the device’s authenticity checks. Do not accept a device that arrives initialized or with a recovery phrase supplied by someone else.
- Initialize privately. Create the recovery material on the device in a room without cameras, phones or other people watching.
- Write the recovery phrase exactly. Use the manufacturer’s approved medium and never photograph, email or upload it. Anyone with the phrase can usually control the funds.
- Set and record the device PIN. Keep the PIN separate from the recovery phrase. If you use a passphrase or advanced PIN feature, document the distinction between the normal and alternate wallets.
- Install only the required wallet software. Download it from the manufacturer or the wallet project’s genuine channel, and verify the application name before entering any information.
- Receive a small test amount. Confirm the receiving address on the hardware wallet’s screen, not only in the computer or phone interface.
- Perform a small outgoing test. Check the destination and fee on the device, sign, broadcast, and confirm that the transaction settles as expected.
- Test recovery before funding fully. Wipe or use a spare device where practical, restore from the written or encrypted backup, and verify that the expected account appears. Never test by guessing with a large balance.
- Store backups in separate secure locations. A single location can be lost to fire, theft or water damage. An encrypted SD-card backup still requires protection of its encryption credentials.
Common failure modes and fixes
- The coin is not listed: Check the network, token standard and current supported-assets page. Do not send funds to an address generated by an unrelated network.
- The wallet software cannot connect: Confirm the device model, cable or QR workflow, app permissions and firmware compatibility. Try a small test account before changing derivation settings.
- The displayed address differs: Stop. Compare the address on the hardware wallet with the destination you intended. A mismatch can indicate malware, a wrong account or a wrong network.
- A recovery phrase is exposed: Treat the wallet as compromised. Move funds to a newly generated wallet using a clean device, then retire the exposed phrase. Never attempt to make an exposed phrase safe again.
- An SD card or removable file is unreadable: Keep the original recovery method available. An encrypted removable backup is an additional recovery path, not a reason to discard the phrase or ignore restore testing.
- A multisig wallet will not restore: Verify every cosigner, wallet policy, derivation path, account fingerprint and transaction format. One missing detail can make a valid set of keys appear empty.
Bottom line: which alternative should you buy?
Pick Ledger for the broadest multi-chain shortlist and third-party wallet flexibility. Pick BitBox02 Nova Multi for a focused device with secure-element hardware, USB-C and optional encrypted SD-card backup. Pick Keystone when QR transfer, a 4-inch touchscreen and visible transaction review are central to your workflow. Pick COLDCARD only when Bitcoin-only scope is acceptable and you specifically want air-gapped signing with advanced Bitcoin controls.
Whichever device you choose, verify support for every asset and wallet application before transferring funds, and make recovery testing part of setup rather than an emergency procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a third-party wallet with a Ledger device?
Yes. Ledger says compatible third-party wallets can be used when an asset is not supported in Ledger Wallet. Confirm the exact asset, network and wallet integration before sending funds.
Is an air-gapped wallet automatically safer?
No. Air-gapped signing removes direct connection paths but adds removable-media or QR handling. You still need to verify the destination and amount on the device and protect your backups.
Should I buy a Bitcoin-only device if I might add other coins later?
Only if you are comfortable replacing or supplementing it later. Bitcoin-only devices such as COLDCARD do not cover multi-chain holdings.

Restore the wallet on a compatible replacement using your recovery backup, then set a new device PIN. If the recovery phrase may have been seen by someone else, move funds to a newly generated wallet instead.
Does an encrypted SD-card backup replace a recovery phrase?
No. It is an additional recovery method. Keep the original recovery procedure documented, protect the encryption credentials and test restoration before relying on the backup.
Why must I verify an address on the device screen?
Malware can alter an address shown on a computer or phone. The hardware wallet’s screen is the trusted point for checking the destination and amount immediately before signing.
