The best travel camera depends on what you want to carry and shoot: a pocketable zoom keeps packing simple, while an interchangeable-lens camera offers more control over reach, framing, and future upgrades. These eight picks cover different travel priorities rather than a single universal ranking. Compare each camera with its lens or kit, because the whole setup—not just the body—determines how portable it is.
How to choose a travel camera
Start with the camera you will actually carry, then consider what you need it to do. An interchangeable-lens system can adapt to landscapes, portraits, or distant subjects, but additional lenses add bulk. A fixed-lens camera is simpler to pack, though its reach and framing options are set by the built-in lens.
- Whole-kit size: APS-C and Micro Four Thirds lenses can be smaller and lighter than full-frame equivalents; compare the lens as well as the camera body. Full-frame may offer image-quality advantages, but that does not make it the right choice for every traveler. DPReview’s 2026 travel-camera guide discusses the portability trade-off.
- Reach and flexibility: A zoom can cover varied scenes without a lens swap. Interchangeable systems let you choose lenses for particular subjects, while a pocket zoom reduces the need to pack extras.
- Resolution and stabilization: More megapixels can leave room to crop, but they do not alone determine image quality. In-body or lens stabilization can help with handheld shooting; it does not freeze a moving subject.
- Screen and viewfinder: A viewfinder can be useful in bright sun and for discreet framing. A fully articulating screen can help with self-recording, while a fixed screen limits shooting angles.
- Autofocus and video: Match tracking and video capabilities to your subjects. A camera suited to scenery and family snapshots may not be the strongest choice for fast action or video-heavy travel.
- Protection and practicalities: Only some models below have a specific protection rating cited. Check local prices, stock, and regional model names before buying; these can change.
Eight travel cameras, matched to different priorities
1. Fujifilm X-T5: detail and weather protection
The X-T5 is a strong option if you want a high-resolution APS-C camera in a system with a broad selection of compact lenses. RTINGS highlights its 40.2MP sensor, weather sealing, battery life, and compact X-mount lens options. That resolution can give you flexibility to crop travel photos, but it is not proof that this camera is best for every traveler.
RTINGS names it its best travel camera and gives it an 8.2 travel-photography score in its own guide. Treat that number as RTINGS’ proprietary rating, not a universal standard or a direct comparison with every camera on this list. See RTINGS’ 2026 travel-camera picks and its X-T5 assessment.

2. Sony α6700: balanced APS-C for photos and video
The α6700 balances a relatively compact body with in-body stabilization, tracking autofocus, and photo/video versatility. RTINGS also points to its battery life and the wide availability of E-mount lenses; DPReview includes it as a compact all-round option. It is a sensible system pick if you want one camera for varied subjects and expect to choose among lenses over time.
RTINGS calls it its mid-range travel pick and rates it 8.3 in its travel category. That is the publisher’s rating, not an across-the-board verdict. More on the camera’s travel-related strengths is available in the RTINGS α6700 assessment.
3. Canon EOS R50: beginner-friendly and budget-oriented
The EOS R50 is aimed at travelers who value approachable controls and a capable auto mode. RTINGS identifies it as a budget travel option. The trade-offs in that guide are no in-body image stabilization, entry-level 4K limitations, and a less extensive native lens selection than older systems.

- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
Consider it if you want an accessible starting point and do not need the most advanced stabilization or video features. Before choosing a lens kit, check that its focal-length range fits the places and subjects you plan to photograph. RTINGS’ travel-camera guide provides its model context.
4. Fujifilm X-M5: compact, screen-first shooting
The X-M5 is a compact mirrorless option for travelers who prefer composing on a screen and want a camera suited to video as well as stills. RTINGS’ key caveats are the lack of a viewfinder and in-body image stabilization. Those omissions matter if you often shoot in bright light or want stabilization from the camera body rather than relying on the lens.
Choose it when compactness and screen-based use matter more than having an eye-level finder. Check the lens you plan to pair with it: the body’s small size does not guarantee a small complete kit. See RTINGS’ travel-camera selections.
Rank #3
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
5. Sony a7CR: compact full-frame with high resolution
The a7CR combines a stabilized 61MP full-frame sensor with strong autofocus and 4K/60p video, according to DPReview. It is the high-resolution choice here, but the small, low-resolution viewfinder is a compromise. Lens choice is just as important: a bulky lens can undermine the portability of a compact body.

“If you’re looking for maximum resolution in a travel-sized body, the a7RC is tough to beat.”
That is DPReview reviewer Richard Butler’s assessment of the a7CR, not a claim that it is the best camera for every traveler. For a portable kit, weigh the lens and body together. See DPReview’s model discussion.

6. Fujifilm X-T50 with 16–50mm lens: versatile kit zoom
DPReview calls the X-T50 with its 16–50mm lens “The great travel kit.” The camera has a 40MP APS-C sensor and stabilization, while the zoom offers a useful range for varied travel scenes. This pairing is a good fit if you want one lens to handle a broad mix of subjects without changing lenses frequently.
DPReview notes a small viewfinder and battery, and says autofocus tracking can struggle. Those trade-offs may matter more for action or long days away from charging than for slower-paced sightseeing. The guide’s assessment is at DPReview.

The OM-3 uses a 20MP stacked Four Thirds sensor and carries an IP53 dust- and water-resistance rating, as reported by DPReview. The Micro Four Thirds system can make for especially compact lenses, an advantage when packing a multi-lens kit. The cited guide also flags a small viewfinder and autofocus limitations.

8. Panasonic Lumix ZS300 / TZ300: pocketable zoom without lens changes
This fixed-lens compact camera offers a 1-inch 20.1MP sensor and a 24–360mm-equivalent lens with 15× zoom, plus 5-axis Hybrid O.I.S., according to Digital Camera World. It suits travelers who want broad zoom reach in a pocketable camera and do not want to carry or swap lenses.
The screen is fixed and there is no viewfinder, which can make bright-sun framing less convenient. The model is called ZS300 in the US and TZ300 elsewhere, so confirm the regional name when checking listings. See Digital Camera World’s travel-camera guide.

Which type of travel kit fits your trip?
- Prioritize cropping flexibility and weather protection: Start with the Fujifilm X-T5, then choose an X-mount lens that keeps the kit manageable.
- Want a versatile APS-C system for stills and video: Consider the Sony α6700 and compare E-mount lens sizes for your most common subjects.
- Want straightforward controls on a budget: Look at the Canon EOS R50, while accounting for its stabilization, video, and lens-selection limits.
- Prefer a compact camera and screen-based composition: The Fujifilm X-M5 is worth considering if you can do without a viewfinder and IBIS.
- Want high-resolution full-frame: The Sony a7CR offers 61MP, but select a lens with portability in mind.
- Want one adaptable zoom lens in a kit: The Fujifilm X-T50 with 16–50mm is DPReview’s travel-kit pick; consider its viewfinder, battery, and tracking caveats.
- Want a compact interchangeable-lens system with a cited resistance rating: The OM System OM-3 pairs a Four Thirds sensor with compact-lens potential and an IP53 rating.
- Want zoom reach without interchangeable lenses: The Panasonic ZS300/TZ300 combines a pocketable format with a 24–360mm-equivalent range.
What the 2026 guides can—and cannot—tell you
These recommendations combine two guides with different selection methods; they are not a single eight-camera head-to-head test. DPReview’s guide by Mitchell Clark was published August 2, 2026 and updated August 21, 2026. RTINGS updated its travel-camera picks September 17, 2026 and says it independently buys and tests cameras using a standardized methodology. The ratings and recommendations therefore reflect each publisher’s own process, not a shared scoring system. See the DPReview guide and RTINGS guide.
