There is no verified universal “best” graphics preset for Tormented Souls 2 on Switch 2. The available evidence confirms handheld, tabletop and TV modes, plus HDR support on compatible televisions. For a portable session, use handheld mode and consider headphones for the game’s atmosphere. For a larger display, use TV mode and enable the normal Switch 2/television HDR path if your TV supports HDR. Choose tank or modern controls according to your movement preference, and select the easier option if you want less demanding combat.

Nintendo lists the Switch 2 release for 15 October 2026. A Sitegeek hands-on review published on 13 October, before release, described the game as running smoothly and particularly praised the handheld experience. That is one reviewer’s impression, not a frame-rate test, so this guide does not promise a resolution, frame-rate target or docked-versus-handheld performance result.

What “best settings” means on Switch 2

For this game, the meaningful choices are about how and where you play rather than selecting a confirmed quality or performance preset. The official Nintendo listing confirms support for handheld, tabletop and TV modes and identifies HDR support for compatible TVs. The available hands-on review confirms tank and modern control styles, a dodge button and an easier mode, but it does not publish a complete settings-menu inventory.

That leaves four evidence-based decisions:

  • Choose a portable screen with personal listening, or a larger TV display.
  • Use HDR only when the television and console output path are HDR-compatible.
  • Try tank or modern movement based on which feels more natural to you.
  • Use the easier option when you want to reduce the challenge.

No cited source establishes a selectable graphics preset, 30- or 60-frame-per-second target, native or upscaled resolution, refresh-rate mode, or battery-life figure. Any recommendation that claims one of those is the “best” Switch 2 setting would go beyond the available evidence.

Confirmed features and important limits

Feature What is confirmed What is not established
Handheld mode Nintendo lists handheld support; a reviewer found the handheld presentation especially effective. No measured handheld resolution, frame rate or battery result.
Tabletop mode Nintendo lists tabletop support. No independent tabletop performance comparison.
TV mode Nintendo lists TV support. No verified docked resolution, frame-rate target or comparison with handheld output.
HDR Nintendo lists HDR for compatible TVs. No evidence of a specific in-game HDR slider or an objectively preferable HDR level.
Controls The review reports tank and modern controls and a dodge button. No measured control-latency comparison or universally superior style.
Difficulty The review reports an easier mode. No detailed list of exactly which mechanics or damage values it changes.

For the platform feature list, see the official Nintendo Switch 2 game listing. The control and performance impressions come from Johnny Ofthedead’s Sitegeek review, which was published before Nintendo’s listed release date.

Best handheld setup

Choose handheld for close, personal play

Handheld is the strongest default when you want to play privately, move between rooms or keep the horror atmosphere close to you. Nintendo confirms the mode, and the Sitegeek reviewer specifically describes the handheld experience as effective while reporting that the game ran smoothly during their session. Treat that as a subjective review impression rather than a guarantee for every unit, software build or play environment.

Handheld also avoids assumptions about your television’s HDR behavior, picture processing or viewing distance. Sit at the distance that keeps fixed-camera scenes and environmental details comfortable to read, then adjust the console’s display brightness for your surroundings. The sources do not establish a numeric in-game brightness recommendation or even confirm a dedicated brightness slider, so do not chase a particular percentage.

Use headphones if you want the full audio atmosphere

The reviewer recommends headphones for handheld play because sound contributes strongly to the atmosphere. This is optional: built-in speakers remain a valid choice when you need to stay aware of your surroundings. No particular headset was tested or endorsed, and no accessory is required to play.

Start with the control style that matches your habits

Players familiar with classic fixed-camera survival horror can begin with tank controls. They separate turning from forward and backward movement and may feel predictable when camera angles change. Players who normally expect contemporary directional movement can begin with modern controls. The review notes that modern controls still felt imperfect and that combat was stiff, so treat modern movement as a preference to test, not a guaranteed improvement.

Whichever style you choose, identify the dodge input before entering a dangerous area. The review confirms a dodge button, but it does not document a complete remapping screen or a precise menu path. If your version exposes control settings, use its on-screen labels and practice the dodge in a safe location before relying on it in combat.

Pick the easier option when tension matters more than punishment

The review reports an easier mode. Select it if you want to focus on exploration, puzzles and the story with less demanding combat. Keep the default challenge if resource management and the risk of failure are central to what you enjoy. Because the review does not specify the exact changes, do not assume the easier option alters only enemy health, saves or damage.

Best TV and docked setup

Use TV mode for a larger shared display

TV mode suits players who want a bigger image, a couch-distance view or shared play space. Nintendo confirms TV support, but neither Nintendo’s listing nor the hands-on review supplies a docked resolution, frame-rate target or graphics mode. You therefore cannot make a verified “performance mode versus quality mode” choice for this game on Switch 2.

Connect the console using your normal Switch 2 dock and select the TV input that carries the console signal. If the picture looks different from handheld, that alone does not prove a performance difference; televisions add their own scaling, sharpening and motion processing.

Enable HDR only with a compatible television

Nintendo lists HDR support for compatible TVs. If your television supports HDR and your console-to-TV path is configured for it, retain the HDR output option so the set can receive the game’s HDR signal. If the TV does not support compatible HDR, use standard output instead. The listing does not state that HDR is always preferable, nor does it document a game-specific HDR slider, paper-white value or peak-brightness target.

When HDR appears too dark, too bright or washed out, first check that the television is using the correct HDMI input mode and that HDR is enabled for that input. Then compare the game with the TV’s standard picture mode rather than changing several controls at once. This isolates a display configuration issue from the game itself. Avoid copying numerical HDR values from another television; panel capability and room lighting differ substantially.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce television processing when controls feel delayed

A television’s picture processing can make any game feel less responsive, even when the console software is unchanged. If your set offers a gaming-focused picture mode, it is reasonable to try it and compare the dodge timing with your usual mode. This is a television adjustment, not a confirmed Tormented Souls 2 graphics option. The available sources provide no input-lag measurement, so judge the result by your own controls.

Tabletop mode: the middle option

Nintendo also lists tabletop support. Tabletop mode is useful when you want a screen larger than handheld without occupying the television. It keeps the same practical decisions as handheld—personal viewing angle, optional headphones and your preferred control style—but changes the distance and controller arrangement. Because no source compares tabletop performance with either other mode, choose it for convenience rather than an assumed frame-rate or resolution benefit.

Recommended setup by play situation

Your situation Mode to try Settings approach
Playing alone in a quiet room Handheld Use a comfortable brightness level, optional headphones and the control style you already know.
Playing while travelling Handheld Prioritize readable brightness and safe audio volume; test the dodge input before a difficult encounter.
Wanting a larger image TV Use TV mode; enable HDR through the console and compatible TV path if available.
Sharing the room’s screen TV Choose the control style that feels easiest to explain and verify the display looks correct from the seating position.
No television available Tabletop Use the built-in screen at a comfortable distance; do not expect a documented performance advantage.
Prefer classic survival-horror movement Any mode Try tank controls first, then switch if turning and movement feel restrictive.
Prefer directional movement Any mode Try modern controls, while allowing for the review’s warning that they may still feel imperfect.
Want less demanding combat Any mode Select the reported easier option if it is presented in your game build.

Step-by-step setup before your first session

  1. Choose the physical setup. Decide between handheld, tabletop and TV based on viewing distance, privacy and whether you want personal or room-filling audio. Nintendo confirms all three modes.
  2. Check the display path. In handheld or tabletop, set the console brightness for the room. In TV mode, confirm the correct HDMI input and whether the television supports HDR. Do not assume an HDR toggle exists inside the game.
  3. Choose a movement style. Start with tank controls if you like classic fixed-camera movement; start with modern controls if you expect contemporary directional movement. Change it after a short test rather than committing because one style is marketed as newer.
  4. Locate dodge. The review confirms a dodge button. Practice the input in a safe area and note whether your chosen control style changes how easily you can reach it.
  5. Select challenge. Keep the default option for the intended challenge, or choose the easier option if you want exploration and atmosphere with less combat pressure.
  6. Set audio for the room. Use headphones in handheld when you want the reviewer’s recommended atmospheric presentation; use speakers when you need environmental awareness.
  7. Play for several minutes before judging. Fixed-camera transitions, movement timing and display processing can feel unfamiliar at first. Evaluate comfort and responsiveness after you have crossed more than one camera angle or encounter.

Troubleshooting common problems

The HDR option does not appear

HDR is listed only for compatible TVs. Confirm that the television supports HDR, that the console is connected to an input capable of receiving it and that the TV’s input-specific HDR setting is enabled. If any part of the chain is incompatible, use standard output. Nintendo’s listing does not promise an in-game HDR control, so its absence in a menu is not evidence of a missing patch.

The TV image looks worse than handheld

Do not infer a docked performance problem from a softer or darker image. Check the TV’s picture mode, scaling and HDR state, and compare with processing reduced. The sources contain no docked-versus-handheld measurements, so there is no verified resolution or frame-rate explanation to apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Modern controls feel awkward

Switch to tank controls and test the same room or encounter. The review itself says modern controls can feel imperfect, while tank and modern are both reported options. The better choice is the one that lets you turn, line up attacks and react to the dodge input consistently.

Combat feels too demanding

Use the easier mode reported by the reviewer if it is available in your build. The evidence does not detail the mode’s exact adjustments, so evaluate the result in play rather than expecting a particular enemy-health or damage change.

The atmosphere is weaker on the portable screen

Try headphones, as the reviewer recommends them for handheld audio atmosphere. Keep the volume at a safe level and remember that this is an optional suggestion, not a requirement or a guarantee of a specific mix.

What the evidence does not let you optimize

Several settings questions commonly asked for Switch 2 games cannot be answered responsibly here. No cited source gives a handheld or docked pixel count, dynamic-resolution behavior, frame-rate cap, VRR support, graphics preset, texture setting, shadow option or battery-life result. There is also no independent test proving that docked mode performs identically to handheld mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The smooth-running comment comes from one Sitegeek reviewer’s pre-release hands-on session. The published score was 7.9/10, but that score is the reviewer’s assessment, not an aggregate technical rating. It should not be converted into a promise that every player will see identical performance.

Bottom line for handheld versus TV

Use handheld when portability, close viewing and private audio are your priorities; headphones are worth trying but optional. Use TV mode when you want a larger display, and enable HDR through a compatible television path when available. Tabletop is the practical compromise when you want the console’s screen away from your hands. Across all modes, choose tank or modern controls by feel, use the dodge input deliberately and select the easier option when you want less demanding combat. Until measured Switch 2 testing or fuller official specifications are available, there is no evidence-based resolution, frame-rate or graphics preset to declare “best.”
