To separate people speaking at the same time in an existing recording, use a speech-separation tool that creates individual speaker audio tracks—not merely transcription or speaker labels. The most relevant options are SpectraLayers Pro 11 for desktop audio editing, Premiere’s Separate Crosstalk feature for Premiere workflows, AudioShake Multi-Speaker 2.0 for cloud or API processing, and MATLAB’s separateSpeakers function for technical workflows. They differ in workflow, constraints, and privacy implications; the available product documentation does not establish an independent head-to-head accuracy winner.

What separating overlapping voices actually does

When two people talk over one another, their voices are mixed together in the same recorded audio. Separation attempts to produce distinct audio for each speaker, so that one person’s part can be edited, muted, or processed without treating the whole conversation as a single track. This is different from diarization: diarization marks who spoke when, but does not by itself create independently usable audio for simultaneous speech. AudioShake explicitly describes its service as producing per-speaker tracks, including for overlapping moments (AudioShake’s multi-speaker separation overview).

A transcript or translation can help you understand what was said, but it is not the same outcome as separating the voices in the recording. If your aim is to edit a mixed conversation—for example, reduce one speaker while retaining another—look for a feature that produces speaker audio tracks or layers. A tool that only assigns labels to transcript segments will not meet that requirement. Someone seeking help with “simultaneous translation” may also need a translation tool, but translation alone will not unmix the original audio. The separation step is about creating distinct sound tracks from the existing mix.

Separation is a reconstruction task, not a guarantee that every voice will emerge cleanly. Sustained overlap, similar-sounding speakers, noise, echo, and clipping can make it harder to distinguish voices. A short test using audio representative of the real recording is a sensible way to assess whether a product fits the job.

Steinberg SpectraLayers Pro 11 Audio editors who want a desktop unmixing workflow Unmix Multiple Voices separates voices into layers. The manual describes registering voice profiles and support for an unlimited number of voices overall, with up to three overlapping simultaneously. Plan for the expected speaker count and register profiles. Steinberg recommends using Unmix Noisy Speech or Voice DeNoise first when background noise is present. The cited documentation does not provide independent accuracy results.
Premiere Separate Crosstalk Editors already working in Premiere Analyzes selected audio and creates separate tracks for independent editing. Supported selections are 1 second to 10 minutes. Costs one Generative Credit per processed second. Adobe adds a two-second handle at each end of the selection, and the displayed cost includes those handles. Processing uses Adobe’s cloud model and has consent, rights, and regional conditions.
AudioShake Multi-Speaker 2.0 Cloud/API users and production pipelines AudioShake describes per-speaker tracks, including overlapping dialogue. Its September 22, 2026 announcement says supported input sample rates range from 8 kHz phone audio to 48 kHz broadcast files. Performance statements are vendor claims, not independent comparative results. AudioShake says accuracy holds to about 20% sustained overlap and begins to degrade beyond that.
MATLAB separateSpeakers Developers and researchers already using MATLAB MathWorks documents separation of overlapping speech, an option to specify a known speaker count, and the ability to return residual audio. Requires Deep Learning Toolbox and a MATLAB implementation workflow; it is not a point-and-click choice for most editing tasks.

Compare options on five practical questions: Does the feature explicitly address simultaneous speech? Does it return separate editable audio, rather than only text labels? What overlap, noise, or speaker-count limits are documented? Does it fit a desktop, cloud, API, or programmable workflow—and what privacy conditions follow? Finally, what does it cost in credits or required software? A short test is useful because the cited product pages do not supply a common independent benchmark.

Choose based on where the recording needs to go

Choose SpectraLayers for a desktop audio-editing route

SpectraLayers Pro 11 is the clearest fit if you want to work with separated voices as layers in a desktop audio-editing workflow. Steinberg’s manual documents an Unmix Multiple Voices feature and voice-profile registration. This makes the product a purpose-built option for an editor who can prepare voice examples and work through a dedicated audio application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The manual provides Register Voice and Register Multiple Voices options for adding the voice profiles that the process uses. It distinguishes the number of voices across a recording from how many overlap at one instant: the documented support is unlimited voices overall, but up to three voices overlapping simultaneously. If four or more voices speak at once, the cited documentation does not establish that all of them can be separated simultaneously. For a recording with background noise, Steinberg recommends applying Unmix Noisy Speech or Voice DeNoise before Unmix Multiple Voices. That is a useful documented order of operations, not a promise that noise treatment will restore every obscured word.

If you are shopping specifically for this capability, Steinberg SpectraLayers Pro 11 is a more task-relevant product search than generic headphones or microphones: it is the named option here with a documented multivoice unmixing feature. However, the manual does not establish that a particular edition is currently listed on Amazon, nor does it confirm affiliate eligibility. Check the target Amazon marketplace and the edition’s capabilities before linking or buying. Headphones may help you review separated tracks, and microphones may improve future recordings, but neither can separate voices already combined in a mixed track.

Choose Premiere if your edit is already there and cloud processing is acceptable

Premiere’s Separate Crosstalk is suited to an editor who wants the result as separate tracks in a Premiere project. Adobe’s instructions say to select and trim the crosstalk region before processing. The selection must be at least one second and no longer than ten minutes. The feature charges one Generative Credit per processed second. Adobe adds a two-second handle to each end of the selection, and those added seconds are included in the displayed cost estimate. As a result, the estimated credit use can reflect audio beyond the region you initially intended to isolate. Trim deliberately and review the estimate before processing.

This option is not local-only processing. Adobe says Separate Crosstalk sends the selected audio to its cloud model. On first use, users must consent to processing and confirm they have the necessary rights and permissions for people in the recording. Adobe says the information is used to provide the feature, is not retained beyond providing it, and is not used to train AI models. Adobe also says the feature is unavailable for files uploaded from Illinois or Texas. Check the current cloud-based AI voice features documentation for those conditions. If the recording includes other people, consider the rights and permissions confirmation as part of deciding whether this cloud workflow is appropriate.

Choose AudioShake for a cloud or API pipeline

AudioShake is relevant when the workflow calls for a cloud service or API rather than a desktop editing feature. The company describes Multi-Speaker separation as producing an individual track for each speaker, including overlapping dialogue. On September 22, 2026, it announced Multi-Speaker 2.0 and said the system accepts sample rates from 8 kHz phone audio to 48 kHz broadcast files, with output sample rates matching the source. Its announcement also describes isolating brief interjections and overlapping lines. The stated range may make the service relevant to material with very different recording origins, from phone conversations through broadcast files; it does not by itself establish how cleanly a specific recording will separate.

Keep the company’s performance claims in context. AudioShake says its accuracy holds to about 20% sustained overlap and begins to degrade beyond that. Its product material also presents comparative claims, including 75% greater noise/interference removal, 32% better voice separation, and 4.1× fewer transcription errors. These are AudioShake’s statements; the cited material does not establish them as independent head-to-head benchmark results. Treat them as vendor claims rather than proof that the service will outperform the other options on a particular recording. The company’s September 22, 2026 announcement quotes co-founder and CEO Jessica Powell describing overlap as a moment for an interjection, laugh, or finishing another person’s sentence. That explains the editorial use case, but is not a performance test.

Choose MATLAB for a programmable workflow

MathWorks documents separateSpeakers for separating overlapping speech. A user can specify a known number of speakers, and the function can return residual audio. The documentation identifies availability since MATLAB R2023b and identifies R2026b. The function requires Deep Learning Toolbox, making it more appropriate for users who already work in MATLAB and want to incorporate separation into a technical workflow than for editors looking for a straightforward application feature. If you do not already have a MATLAB-based process, account for both the toolbox requirement and the work of integrating a function into that process; it is not presented as a simple editing-app control.

How to evaluate a tool on your recording

Product pages do not provide a shared independent benchmark across these options, so a controlled sample from your own material is more useful than choosing by a vendor’s best-case claim alone. Use the same short excerpt when trying more than one candidate, and judge the result against your actual editing goal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pick a representative excerpt. Include the kind of overlap, background noise, room sound, and speaker similarity present in the full recording. A clean isolated sentence is not a meaningful test if the difficult section contains sustained crosstalk. Include both a typical section and, if possible, the hardest relevant moment.
  2. Decide what output you need. Confirm that the feature produces separately editable speaker tracks or layers. If the output is only a transcript with speaker labels, it does not isolate audio for independent editing. If you need to lower one voice, remove a brief interruption, or examine each speaker separately, listen for whether the output lets you do that.
  3. Check the speaker and overlap conditions. For SpectraLayers Pro 11, account for the documented maximum of three simultaneously overlapping voices. For AudioShake, treat the roughly 20% sustained-overlap point as the company’s stated performance boundary, not a universal threshold or guarantee. Do not treat either specification as a direct comparison with the other product.
  4. Account for processing and access requirements. For Premiere, check selection duration, Generative Credit use, cloud processing, consent and rights confirmation, and the stated Illinois and Texas restriction. Remember the two-second handles on either end when reviewing the displayed estimate. For MATLAB, confirm that Deep Learning Toolbox and a MATLAB implementation are suitable. For a cloud/API service, ensure that its workflow fits how you intend to process the material.
  5. Listen to each output against the original. Check whether the intended speaker remains intelligible, whether another voice leaks into that track, and whether important interjections or speech are missing. A plausible-looking set of tracks does not by itself show that the separation is adequate. Listen especially to the sections where overlap begins and ends, not only the middle of long turns.
  6. Make the choice by the result and workflow together. A service can be capable of separation but still be the wrong option if its credit model, software requirements, cloud processing, or integration do not suit your project. Keep a copy of the original mixed recording for comparison while reviewing the result.

What can make separation fail or sound imperfect

Long stretches of simultaneous speech

When people talk over one another for sustained periods, a system has less non-overlapping speech to use in distinguishing their voices. AudioShake’s approximate 20% sustained-overlap statement is a useful caution about that company’s service, but it is not a cross-product limit. The Steinberg documentation instead states a speaker-count limit of three voices overlapping simultaneously. The sources do not establish one universal overlap percentage at which all tools fail. These measures describe different things, so compare neither as if it were a shared benchmark.

Similar voices and difficult recordings

Similar-sounding voices, background noise, echo, and clipping can undermine separation. The available product documentation does not quantify the effect of each condition or provide a common test set. In SpectraLayers, Steinberg specifically recommends noise-focused processing before Unmix Multiple Voices when background noise is present; this does not establish that noise treatment will solve every difficult recording. Where a recording is already clipped or heavily reverberant, assess the output carefully rather than assuming that a separator can reconstruct details that are unclear in the original.

Expect some speech to remain unresolved

Separation should be treated as an editing aid whose output needs review, not as proof that every syllable has been recovered cleanly. Listen to the separated tracks alongside the source, especially where speakers interrupt, laugh, or finish each other’s sentences. If the target moment is still unclear, do not treat a separated track as a reliable substitute for careful listening to the original. A useful result may still make a voice easier to hear or edit, without making every overlapping word certain.

Bottom line for selecting a tool

For desktop audio work, SpectraLayers Pro 11 has a documented multivoice unmixing feature and voice-profile workflow. For an existing Premiere edit, Separate Crosstalk creates separate tracks but uses cloud processing, Generative Credits, and Adobe’s consent and regional conditions. AudioShake targets cloud/API workflows and supports a broad stated sample-rate range, but its accuracy and comparison figures are vendor claims. MATLAB provides a documented programmable function for technical users. Since there is no independent shared accuracy comparison in the cited material, test the candidate on a representative excerpt before relying on it for the whole conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI separate two people talking at the same time in one recording?

Some tools are designed to create separate speaker audio tracks from overlapping speech. SpectraLayers Pro 11 documents Unmix Multiple Voices, Premiere has Separate Crosstalk, AudioShake describes per-speaker tracks, and MathWorks documents separateSpeakers. Results depend on the recording, and the cited product pages do not establish a shared accuracy winner.

Is speaker diarization the same as separating voices?

No. Diarization labels who spoke when; it does not necessarily create separate audio. For independent editing, muting, or processing, look for an output of separate speaker tracks or layers.

Which tool has a documented limit on simultaneous speakers?

Steinberg says SpectraLayers Pro 11 supports an unlimited number of voices overall, with up to three overlapping at once. AudioShake says its accuracy holds to about 20% sustained overlap before beginning to degrade; that is a vendor statement, not a limit shared by all tools.

How many Generative Credits does Premiere Separate Crosstalk use?

Adobe charges one Generative Credit per processed second. The feature adds a two-second handle at each end of the selected audio, and those handles are included in the displayed cost estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Premiere Separate Crosstalk process audio locally?

No. Adobe says the selected audio is sent to its cloud model. First use requires consent and confirmation of necessary rights and permissions for people in the recording. Adobe says the information is not retained beyond providing the feature and is not used to train AI models; it also says the feature is unavailable for files uploaded from Illinois or Texas.

What audio sample rates does AudioShake Multi-Speaker 2.0 support?

In its September 22, 2026 announcement, AudioShake said the system supports input sample rates from 8 kHz phone audio to 48 kHz broadcast files and matches the output sample rate to the source.

Can headphones or microphones separate voices that are already mixed together?

No. Headphones can help you review the output, and microphones can help improve future recordings, but neither separates voices already combined in a single recorded track. Use a speech-separation feature that creates speaker tracks or layers.

Which option should I test first?

Choose by your workflow: SpectraLayers for desktop audio editing, Premiere Separate Crosstalk if you already edit in Premiere and accept cloud processing, AudioShake for cloud/API workflows, and MATLAB if you have a programmable MATLAB setup and Deep Learning Toolbox. Test a short, representative excerpt before processing an entire conversation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with the workflow you already use, then test a representative overlap segment. SpectraLayers Pro 11 is a documented desktop option; Premiere offers separate tracks with cloud, credit, consent, and regional conditions; AudioShake serves cloud/API workflows but publishes vendor performance claims; MATLAB suits technical users. No cited source establishes a shared independent accuracy winner.
