The best Tomb Kings army depends on which game you mean. In Total War: Warhammer, build a disposable Skeleton screen that buys time for constructs, monsters, magic and healing; in Warhammer: The Old World, begin with the points level and matched-play restrictions, then combine a legal skeleton core with archers, mobile units, constructs and magical support. Neither ruleset has a single army that is always best: the right mix changes with your lord, unit-capacity limits, opponent and battlefield.

This guide separates the two games, explains what every major unit family is for, gives practical starting compositions, and covers the current Tomb Kings rules and boxed armies so you can choose units without confusing a video-game roster with a tabletop army list.

First, identify the Tomb Kings game

“Best Tomb Kings army” is ambiguous because the faction appears in two very different systems. Total War: Warhammer is a real-time campaign and battle game in which unit capacities, lord skills, replenishment and the Realm of Souls shape your roster. Warhammer: The Old World is a points-based tabletop game with army composition rules, base sizes, matched-play restrictions and an official rules-update cycle.

Total War: Warhammer: the composition that works

Total War Academy’s central warning is that “the legions of the dead are vast, but they are also frail.” Skeleton Warriors and Skeleton Spearmen are therefore control pieces, not the main source of damage. Their job is to occupy enemies, screen valuable units and absorb missile fire while your constructs, monsters and magic do the killing. Their casualties also advance the Realm of Souls, turning an apparently losing exchange into healing and, eventually, a powerful Ushabti summon.

Use a disposable anvil, not a skeleton damage stack

Deploy Skeleton Warriors or spearmen in a broad front. Keep them between enemy armour-piercing attacks and your constructs, and use them to pin units in place rather than chase kills. Spearmen are especially useful when the opposing army contains large targets; ordinary Warriors are a straightforward way to fill space and protect flanks. Replace losses as the campaign allows instead of treating every skeleton as a unit that must survive.

A practical starting proportion is a little more than half of a general-purpose army in expendable infantry, with the remainder split among damage, support and mobility. That is a planning heuristic, not a balance statistic: reduce the screen when your lord or campaign has strong early constructs, and increase it when you need to hold several fronts or protect artillery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn Realm of Souls into a sustain plan

The Realm of Souls rewards the losses your screen is designed to take. The Lore of Nehekhara’s Restless Dead passive adds another healing source, so keep damaged constructs and monsters near the units and characters that can sustain them. Total War Academy specifically suggests considering both a Hierotitan and a Casket of Souls for their magic-pool and regeneration benefits. They are support investments, not substitutes for a frontline: without bodies to hold the enemy, their value falls quickly.

Place your caster where it can reach the battle without being caught by a cavalry or tunnelling attack. Save healing for expensive constructs and monsters rather than restoring a nearly depleted disposable unit when a key damage dealer is also wounded.

Make Ushabti and Necrotects your main damage layer

Ushabti are elite monstrous infantry and should be the units that convert the time bought by skeletons into kills. Use them against targets they can reach safely, and avoid exposing them to concentrated armour-piercing attacks before the enemy is pinned. A Necrotect should remain close to construct units: the character improves their combat statistics and provides healing, so separating it from the monsters wastes two of the army’s most valuable functions.

Do not fill every slot with elite monsters. Their cost, capacity and vulnerability to focused fire mean that an army made entirely of large units can lose its damage layer before the Realm of Souls has generated enough sustain.

Add a tunnelling or mobile specialist

Tomb Scorpions can burrow beneath or behind smaller units and attack missile troops. Sepulchral Stalkers and Scorpions can tunnel forward and support one another, forcing the opponent to protect its backline instead of concentrating entirely on your anvil. Use these units to create a second threat, not to replace the main engagement: a lone Scorpion that appears unsupported can be isolated and destroyed.

When deploying a tunnelling unit, identify the enemy’s artillery, missile line and exposed wizard before the battle begins. Emerge where the target has limited room to disengage, then coordinate with your advancing line so the opponent cannot turn every unit toward the ambush.

Use chariots for shock, with room to charge

Large Skeleton Chariot units can punch through infantry when they have a clear charge lane. They should avoid braced spear formations, which can punish a frontal impact. Keep chariots on a flank or behind the screen, wait for an enemy unit to be engaged, and charge the side or rear. Repeatedly charging through a target is more reliable than leaving chariots in a prolonged grind.

Choose Warsphinxes and Necrosphinxes by target

A Warsphinx is the Academy’s recommended monster into infantry. A Necrosphinx is preferred against enemy monsters or cavalry. This is a matchup rule, not a universal ranking: inspect the opposing army before spending a rare construct capacity. If the opponent is mostly infantry, more anti-infantry mass is usually useful; if it relies on large monsters or mounted shock units, reserve capacity for the Necrosphinx role.

Use Khalida to make archers a real damage option

Khalida’s buffs and relevant regiments of renown can turn Skeleton Archers into a serious threat, including against armoured and shielded targets. Without that support, archers are generally a pressure tool rather than the core of a damage plan. Give them a protected firing lane, keep skeletons between them and fast attackers, and use your tunnelling units to disrupt enemy missile counters.

A role-based balanced template

For a general Total War: Warhammer campaign stack, assemble these layers rather than chasing a fixed tier list:

  1. Anvil and screen: enough Skeleton Warriors or spearmen to hold the expected number of enemy formations and protect your rear.
  2. Construct damage: one or two groups of Ushabti, supported by a nearby Necrotect.
  3. Magic and sustain: a caster, with a Hierotitan and Casket of Souls considered when the campaign economy and capacity permit.
  4. Specialist pressure: at least one Tomb Scorpion or Sepulchral Stalker element for the backline and vulnerable flanks.
  5. Shock or matchup monster: chariots when you can create charge lanes, a Warsphinx into infantry, or a Necrosphinx into monsters and cavalry.
  6. Ranged pressure: Skeleton Archers when your lord, especially Khalida, can supply the buffs and protection they need.

If the army repeatedly loses before its constructs engage, add screen units and improve deployment. If skeletons survive while expensive units deal little damage, add a specialist damage element rather than more infantry. If missile units are untouched, add a Scorpion or Stalker and change your approach to the backline.

Plan around unit capacities and lord skills

Tomb Kings’ unit capacities restrict how quickly a campaign army can change its identity. A dated community guide associates Ptra with Tomb Guard and chariots, Geheb with Ushabti and Skeleton Warriors, Usirian with Nehekharan Warriors and cavalry, and Asaph with Skeleton Archers, artillery, Tomb Scorpions and Sepulchral Stalkers. Treat those associations as historical strategy guidance, not a current balance ranking. Before spending skill points, decide whether the lord will support an infantry-and-chariot army, an Ushabti-heavy construct army, a cavalry approach or a ranged-and-tunnelling force; otherwise you may unlock units you cannot field in useful numbers.

Warhammer: The Old World: build a legal list first

For the tabletop game, the baseline rules source is Ravening Hordes. Games Workshop identifies it as the volume containing Tomb Kings of Khemri’s grand army composition list, complete unit profiles, special rules, magic items and unique spells. The Tomb Kings Arcane Journal adds optional thematic Armies of Infamy, including the Nehekharan Royal Host and Mortuary Cults, but the Arcane Journal is not required to play the faction.

Set the points level and format

  1. Confirm the agreed points level and whether the event uses matched-play restrictions.
  2. Choose the grand army list or an eligible Army of Infamy.
  3. Record the general and the Hierophant, then verify every character and unit against the current composition rules.
  4. Build the required core of skeleton bodies before adding specialist units.
  5. Check the latest FAQ or errata, especially Official Update Version 1.4, before submitting the list.

The exact best ratio is format- and matchup-dependent. The official material does not publish a universal competitive tier list or a dated tournament win-rate study, so any claim that one Tomb Kings unit is always the best would overstate the evidence.

Skeleton Warriors: the dependable core

Start with enough Skeleton Warriors to occupy objectives, create ranks and protect characters and support pieces. Games Workshop describes Skeleton Warriors as the backbone of Tomb Kings armies. Their value is the space and structure they provide: they let archers fire, chariots manoeuvre and constructs choose favourable combats. A list with too few bodies can concede board control before its expensive units reach the fight.

Skeleton Archers: pressure behind the line

Add archers when the points allowance supports a protected ranged plan. Deploy them behind or between skeleton units, with clear lanes and a fallback route if enemy cavalry or scouts threaten them. Archers are most useful when the rest of the army prevents the opponent from reaching them immediately; buying many shooting units without screens can leave your investment unable to fire for long.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chariots and horsemen: mobility and impact

Chariots provide an impact-focused option that rewards open lanes and careful charge timing. Horsemen add mobility for screening, objectives, redirection or flank pressure. Decide which problem your list must solve: chariots want a decisive impact opportunity, while horsemen help you reach places the infantry cannot. Do not assume that taking both in equal numbers is automatically efficient; terrain, scenario and points determine how much mobility you can use.

Constructs: specialised combat power

Constructs supply the specialised combat output that a skeleton core lacks. Select them to answer the opponents you expect rather than simply taking the largest models available. Anti-infantry constructs, anti-large tools and support pieces perform different jobs, and their points cost can reduce the number of bodies protecting them. Keep enough skeleton mass that a construct is not forced to fight several enemy units alone.

Casket and magical support

A Casket of Souls or other magical support can be worthwhile when the points allowance and the rest of the list can protect it. Place magical support where it can contribute without becoming an isolated target, and confirm its current wording under Official Update Version 1.4. A magical centrepiece is not a replacement for a legal core or a plan to hold the table.

Tabletop composition checklist

  • Legality: the list meets the chosen grand army or Army of Infamy requirements and matched-play restrictions.
  • Command: the general and Hierophant are identified and positioned so the army’s rules function as intended.
  • Bodies: Skeleton Warriors provide a dependable core rather than leaving support and constructs exposed.
  • Reach: archers, chariots or horsemen give you at least one way to influence fights beyond the main infantry line.
  • Specialisation: constructs answer a stated battlefield problem instead of consuming points without a role.
  • Support: a Casket or other magical option is protected and legal at the agreed points level.
  • Rules currency: profiles and interactions have been checked against Official Update Version 1.4 and any newer event document.

Composition comparison by battlefield job

Job Total War: Warhammer choice Warhammer: The Old World choice Main trade-off
Hold the centre Skeleton Warriors or spearmen Skeleton Warriors and other legal skeleton bodies Durability and damage are limited; they buy time and space
Elite anti-infantry damage Ushabti or Warsphinx A suitable construct selected from the current profile High value and points or capacity exposure
Anti-large response Necrosphinx into monsters or cavalry Constructs and options permitted by the chosen list Less efficient when the opponent brings mostly infantry
Backline pressure Tomb Scorpions or Sepulchral Stalkers Use the units available in the selected list and scenario Can be isolated if the main line does not advance
Shock mobility Large Skeleton Chariot units Chariots or horsemen, depending on the list and points Needs charge lanes; chariots should avoid braced spears in Total War
Ranged pressure Skeleton Archers, especially with Khalida’s buffs Skeleton Archers behind a protected screen Vulnerable if fast units reach the firing line
Sustain and magic Realm of Souls, Restless Dead, Hierotitan, Casket and caster Casket or other legal magical support Support only pays off when the army protects it

93-miniature Tomb Kings army (2024)

Games Workshop describes a 93-miniature Tomb Kings army containing 40 Skeleton Warriors, 32 Skeleton Archers, 16 Skeleton Horsemen and three Skeleton Chariots. This is a broad starting collection: it supplies a substantial infantry core, a sizeable ranged block, mobile horsemen and chariots. It is especially useful for a new Old World player who wants to test several battlefield roles before buying specialised constructs and characters.

Host of Nehekhara Army Reinforcement Set (2026)

The later Host of Nehekhara Army Reinforcement Set contains 78 plastic miniatures: 36 Skeleton Warriors, 36 Skeleton Archers and six Skeleton Chariots. Its emphasis is different from the 2024 army: more archers and chariots, with no horsemen listed in the official contents. The official preview calls Skeleton Warriors the backbone of Tomb Kings armies, Skeleton Archers disciplined ranged troops, and Skeleton Chariots impact-focused units with command and cosmetic options.

Set Warriors Archers Horsemen Chariots Best starting use
Tomb Kings army (2024) 40 32 16 3 Balanced core with infantry, shooting and two forms of mobility
Host of Nehekhara Army Reinforcement Set (2026) 36 36 Not listed in the official contents 6 Expand an existing force with bodies, ranged units and impact attacks

Neither box alone answers every army-building need. You still need to check the rules for characters, the Hierophant, command options, constructs and magical support, and then add models that solve the matchups your collection lacks. If you already own the 2024 army, the 2026 set adds another large block of Warriors and Archers plus more Chariots; whether that is worthwhile depends on your points level and whether your local games reward a larger ranged-and-impact plan.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Taking only elite monsters

An all-construct army looks powerful but can lose its damage layer when several large units are focused at once. Correct it with a disposable screen and a support character that can keep constructs operating.

Expecting skeletons to win every fight

In Total War: Warhammer, skeleton infantry are meant to hold and absorb, while their losses advance the Realm of Souls. Use them to pin units and create time for Ushabti, monsters and magic. In The Old World, treat the skeleton core as the structure of the list rather than assuming it supplies all of the damage.

Charging chariots into braced spears

In Total War: Warhammer, a braced spear formation is a specific danger to large Skeleton Chariot units. Move around it, force the unit to turn, or engage it with the anvil before charging a flank. On the tabletop, check the current chariot rules and charge interactions under the latest update rather than importing video-game behaviour.

Using the wrong monster for the matchup

Warsphinxes and Necrosphinxes are not interchangeable recommendations in Total War: Warhammer. Choose Warsphinxes into infantry and Necrosphinxes into enemy monsters or cavalry, then adjust for the actual roster you see.

Leaving the backline undefended

Archers, Caskets and casters attract fast attacks. Screen them, reserve a mobile response and use Scorpions or Stalkers to pressure the opponent’s own missiles. A ranged plan that cannot survive the first flank attack is not a complete composition.

Building for an outdated rules version

For The Old World, confirm Official Update Version 1.4 and the event’s own restrictions before finalising a list. The update includes clarifications affecting Skeleton Chariots, the Casket of Souls, Khemrian Warsphinxes, the Hierophant and other Tomb Kings rules.

A quick decision framework

  1. Choose the ruleset. Mark every unit decision as Total War: Warhammer or Warhammer: The Old World.
  2. Name the job. Decide whether each selection holds, damages, heals, shoots, flanks or answers large targets.
  3. Protect the investment. Add enough skeleton bodies and deployment tools that expensive units can reach their targets.
  4. Match the opponent. Infantry-heavy opponents favour anti-infantry tools; monsters and cavalry justify anti-large choices; exposed missile lines justify tunnelling pressure.
  5. Check the constraint. In Total War, inspect unit capacities and lord skills. In The Old World, check points, list legality and the latest update.
  6. Test the weakest layer. If the army cannot hold, add bodies; if it cannot finish fights, add specialist damage; if it cannot reach the enemy’s backline, add mobility or tunnelling.

What “best” really means for Tomb Kings

Tomb Kings armies are strongest when every layer supports another: skeletons occupy the enemy, healing keeps irreplaceable units active, constructs deliver specialised damage, and mobile or tunnelling units prevent the opponent from choosing every engagement. The correct composition is therefore a role-balanced force adapted to the game, points or capacity limits and opposing roster—not a universal list of the most expensive units.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one universally best Tomb Kings army?

No. Total War: Warhammer compositions are constrained by campaign capacities, lord skills and matchup targets; Warhammer: The Old World lists are constrained by points, list legality, scenario and the current rules update.

How many skeletons should I take?

Use enough Skeleton Warriors or spearmen to hold the expected battle line and protect your damage units. In Total War, they are disposable screens whose losses support the Realm of Souls; in The Old World, they form the legal core. The exact number depends on army size and format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the Tomb Kings starter boxes enough for a complete army?

They provide substantial infantry, archers and mobility, but you must still check character, Hierophant, construct and magical-support requirements for your ruleset and points level.
