Short answer: choose Halo: The Master Chief Collection if you want the closest modern Xbox substitute for a classic console-shooter collection. Choose a Gears game for team-based shooting, Rocket League for fast competitive matches without guns, Minecraft for a persistent cooperative world, or Terraria and Human Fall Flat for lighter co-op sessions.
The important limitation comes first: Xbox backward compatibility does not bring back the original Xbox Live services used by TimeSplitters: Future Perfect. The game became backward compatible on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in November 2021, but its original online multiplayer remains unavailable. Offline multiplayer and system-link can still function when the original release supported them. The alternatives below use current Xbox multiplayer services instead.
Why you need an alternative to Future Perfect online play
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect is an original Xbox title. Backward compatibility makes it playable on newer Xbox consoles, but it does not recreate every service that existed on the original hardware. Xbox’s backward-compatibility documentation explains: “Since these are the original games, not remasters, XBOX Live services such as online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces that were available on the Original XBOX, will not be available.”

If you own multiple consoles and the game supports system-link, that local network mode may still be usable. Offline multiplayer also remains an option where it was included in the original game. Neither mode is the same as joining a modern Xbox network lobby with friends in other locations.

The practical solution is to move to a current Xbox title whose product listing explicitly supports online multiplayer. Microsoft’s Xbox catalog also identifies games with shared or split-screen support, which lets you preserve some of the living-room feel that made older console shooters appealing.

1. Halo: The Master Chief Collection — the closest broad replacement
Halo: The Master Chief Collection is the strongest first choice when your priority is the feel of a classic console shooter and you want several multiplayer experiences in one Xbox package. Where it differs
Halo is not a remake of TimeSplitters, and the games do not share a setting or campaign structure. Pick it for the broad classic-shooter role, not for exact character, weapon or story continuity. If your group mainly wants coordinated squads and objective play, a Gears title may be a better fit.
2. Gears 5 and other Gears entries — for coordinated team shooting
Microsoft’s multiplayer catalog places Gears 5, Gears, Gears 4 and Gears of War 3 under the same online and shared/split-screen filters. That makes the series a useful alternative when the important part of Future Perfect was playing a shooter with a regular team rather than collecting a particular set of arcade-style maps.

Choosing among the listed entries
- Gears 5: start here if you want the most current entry named in the catalog list.
- Gears 4: consider it when your friends already own that edition or your group prefers its matchmaking population and installed version.
- Gears of War 3: useful for groups specifically seeking an older-generation Gears experience that still appears in the catalog’s multiplayer filters.
- Gears: use the exact store listing to confirm which edition your console and region are offering.

Trade-offs
Rocket League cannot reproduce Future Perfect’s weapons, characters or science-fiction tone. Its value is structural: online competition, shared-screen support and a format that works for mixed-skill groups. Choose it because you want that type of session, not because it is a shooter replacement.
4. Minecraft — persistent cooperative play
Minecraft is listed by Microsoft with online multiplayer and shared/split-screen support. It suits groups that want to keep returning to a shared world instead of starting a fresh arena match every time. Players can work on a common project, explore together or simply use the game as a long-running social space.

What to expect
Minecraft is a sandbox rather than a conventional multiplayer shooter. There is no reason to choose it if your only requirement is fast gunplay. It is the better recommendation when the underlying need is “give us a world where we can play together for a long time.”

5. Terraria and Human Fall Flat — lighter cooperative choices
Terraria
Terraria is included in Microsoft’s multiplayer catalog with online and shared/split-screen filters. It is a lower-intensity alternative for exploration, construction and cooperative progression. It works well when the group wants goals to pursue together without the pressure of a competitive shooter match.
Human Fall Flat
Human Fall Flat is also listed for online and shared/split-screen multiplayer. Its appeal is social problem-solving and physics-based play rather than aiming or ranking. It is a good choice for mixed groups, occasional game nights and players who found the idea of Future Perfect’s multiplayer appealing but do not require a combat-focused replacement.
How these two differ from Minecraft
All three games support cooperative play, but the session shape differs. Minecraft is built around an ongoing sandbox world. Terraria emphasizes exploration and progression in a more directed 2D environment. Human Fall Flat is organized around shorter, humorous challenges. Use that distinction when deciding whether your group wants a persistent project or a self-contained evening activity.

Choose by local play
Check the product page for the exact entry you plan to use. Microsoft’s catalog filters identify games with shared or split-screen support, but editions and platform listings can differ. If one person will host a living-room session, confirm that the selected edition exposes the local mode you need before purchasing additional copies.
Choose by online access
Use the online-multiplayer filter as a starting point, then read the current listing for the edition on your console. Catalog inclusion is not a permanent guarantee of a specific subscription entitlement, regional store availability or server policy. Verify those details immediately before your session.

Microsoft marks several entries in this multiplayer catalog as included with Game Pass. The exact labels can change as the service library changes, and the wording may differ by edition or region. Check the current Xbox product page while signed into the account that will play; do not assume that a title shown in a catalog search is included in every plan.

- The listing is for Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, as appropriate for your console.
- The disc is the same edition named in the game’s current Xbox listing.
- Your seller ships to your country and identifies the correct regional version.
- The copy is new, complete or used according to your needs, and includes any required code if the listing says one is necessary.
Physical availability is regional and can change independently of Game Pass. A game may be downloadable in your store while a boxed edition is difficult to find, or the reverse.

How to verify a game before you commit
- Open the current Xbox or Microsoft Store listing. Search for the exact game and edition, not only the franchise name.
- Confirm online multiplayer. Look for the product-page feature indicating online play rather than relying on an old review or a marketplace description.
- Confirm shared or split-screen support if you need local play. The catalog filter is useful, but the edition page is the final check.
- Check your access route. Compare the current Game Pass label with the option to buy digitally or use a physical copy.
- Check region and console generation. Store availability, disc compatibility and subscription terms can vary by country and platform.
- Have every player update the same edition. Version mismatches are a common reason a lobby or local session fails to appear.
Troubleshooting multiplayer sessions
The original game still will not connect
That behavior is expected for the backward-compatible release. Xbox does not restore the original Xbox Live multiplayer service for these games. You can use offline multiplayer or system-link only when the original title supports those modes; otherwise, move the group to a current alternative.
A friend cannot join the replacement game
- Confirm that everyone owns or can access the same game and edition.
- Check that all consoles are running the current update.
- Verify that the game’s product page lists online multiplayer for the edition being used.
- Check each player’s account, privacy and multiplayer permissions.
- Test a new lobby after restarting the game and console.
Local multiplayer is missing
Do not infer local support from online support. Recheck the product page for the shared/split-screen feature and make sure you are launching the edition that includes it. If the catalog entry changed or your region shows a different version, the available modes may not match an older guide.
Game Pass access has disappeared
Subscription libraries change. Reopen the current listing and confirm whether the title is still included in your plan. If it is not, use a purchase option or select another game whose current listing provides the access you need.

Four friends who want a shooter
Begin with Halo: The Master Chief Collection. If your group prefers a more coordinated team structure, try Gears 5 or another Gears entry listed for multiplayer.
A mixed-skill family group
Try Rocket League for short competitive rounds, then switch to Human Fall Flat when the group wants cooperation without score pressure.
A long-running online group
Choose Minecraft if the appeal is returning to a shared world. Choose Terraria when the group wants cooperative exploration and progression with a more directed structure.
Friends sharing one room and different homes
Prioritize entries that Microsoft lists with both online and shared/split-screen support. Halo, Gears entries, Rocket League, Minecraft, Terraria and Human Fall Flat all appear under those catalog filters, but verify the exact edition before buying.
