For most players, start The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered in Performance Mode. It prioritizes smoother camera movement and combat, targeting 60 FPS on PS5; on PS5 Pro, it can reach up to 90 FPS when connected to a VRR-capable display. Choose Ray Tracing Mode when enhanced lighting matters more than maximum responsiveness. In the current Remastered version, Ray Tracing Mode targets 60 FPS, while the earlier next-gen build targets 30 FPS in that mode.

HDR has no universal, publisher-approved slider recipe. Calibrate the game and the display together, aiming to preserve detail in dark scenes and bright highlights rather than chasing a particular number.

Current Remastered version

On PS5, Performance Mode targets 60 FPS and Ray Tracing Mode also targets 60 FPS. On PS5 Pro, Performance Mode can reach up to 90 FPS when the display supports VRR; Ray Tracing Mode targets 60 FPS. These are publisher targets, not a promise that every scene will hold the ceiling.

Earlier next-gen build

The earlier next-gen release targets 60 FPS in Performance Mode and 30 FPS in Ray Tracing Mode. Both modes use dynamic resolution scaling, so neither should be described as a permanently fixed native resolution.

If your menu or patch history does not match the Remastered behavior, do not judge the game against current PS5 Pro expectations. Update the game first, then check the version information shown by your console and the title screen.

Performance versus Ray Tracing: what changes

Version and mode Frame-rate target Main priority Important qualification
Remastered, PS5 Performance 60 FPS Smoother traversal, camera movement and combat response Publisher target; actual behavior can vary by scene
Remastered, PS5 Ray Tracing 60 FPS Enhanced lighting presentation Publisher target; it is not the old 30-FPS expectation
Remastered, PS5 Pro Performance Up to 90 FPS Highest responsiveness and smoothness available in the current modes The up-to-90-FPS behavior requires a VRR-capable display
Remastered, PS5 Pro Ray Tracing 60 FPS Enhanced lighting Publisher target
Earlier next-gen Performance 60 FPS Smoother gameplay Uses dynamic resolution scaling
Earlier next-gen Ray Tracing 30 FPS Ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion Uses dynamic resolution scaling

What Performance Mode is best at

Performance Mode is the practical default when you frequently ride, turn the camera, fight groups or rely on quick reactions. A higher and steadier frame rate makes motion easier to follow and reduces the perceived delay between an input and the on-screen response. That benefit is especially noticeable during close combat and rapid camera pans.

What Ray Tracing Mode is best at

Ray Tracing Mode is the quality choice for players who notice the scene’s lighting more than its input response. The current Remastered mode adds enhanced lighting while targeting 60 FPS on PS5. On the earlier build, however, the target is 30 FPS, so the same label does not represent the same experience across installations.

Recommended settings by player and display

Choose Performance Mode if

  • You value fluid camera movement and combat response above lighting changes.
  • You play on a standard PS5 and want the straightforward 60-FPS target.
  • You are using a display without VRR and want to avoid choosing a mode for a feature your display cannot use.
  • You are on PS5 Pro and want to make use of the highest frame-rate target available to the current version.

Choose Ray Tracing Mode if

  • Enhanced lighting is your primary visual priority.
  • You are comfortable trading some responsiveness for the lighting presentation.
  • You are running the current Remastered version and want its 60-FPS Ray Tracing target rather than the earlier build’s 30-FPS target.

Use VRR when the hardware supports it

VRR is specifically relevant to the Remastered PS5 Pro Performance target of up to 90 FPS. Connect the console to a VRR-capable television or monitor, enable VRR in the PS5’s display settings, and ensure the display is using the correct HDMI input mode. If your display does not support VRR, the game cannot deliver that particular variable-refresh benefit; the mode’s publisher target still does not become a guaranteed, constant rate.

How to calibrate HDR without guessing slider numbers

The Remastered release updates the game’s HDR calibration panel and fixes a problem that could prevent HDR settings from appearing on consoles. Calibrate after updating rather than copying values from an older guide. The publisher does not provide one numeric recipe that is correct for every television or monitor, because panel brightness and tone-mapping behavior differ.

Step 1: Put the display in a neutral HDR picture mode

Start the game and open its HDR calibration screen. On the television or monitor, select the neutral or game HDR preset. Avoid a vivid mode that deliberately exaggerates brightness or color while calibrating; it can make you lower highlights or lift shadows to compensate for the preset instead of setting the game correctly.

Step 2: Disable processing that changes the intended image

Turn off optional processing that adds latency or clips highlights. The exact names vary by display model, so look for features that aggressively sharpen, smooth motion or remap HDR brightness beyond the game’s signal. Keep the display’s low-latency or game setting if it is available.

Step 3: Set the dark pattern by visibility, not by a memorized value

Adjust the in-game control until dark detail is still distinguishable without turning blacks gray. If you cannot see subtle detail at all, the setting is too low or the display is applying an overly aggressive black-level treatment. If the entire dark area looks lifted and gray, check the display’s HDR mode and black-level behavior before changing unrelated game options.

Step 4: Set the bright pattern by preserving texture

Raise or lower the highlight control until bright clouds and other light areas retain visible texture instead of becoming a flat white patch. Clipped highlights indicate that the display’s HDR tone mapping is too intense or that the calibration value is too high. Lower the display’s HDR tone-mapping intensity first, then revisit the game panel.

Step 5: Recheck the console handshake

If HDR looks gray, faded or washed out, confirm that the television or monitor has actually switched into HDR mode. Check the PS5’s HDR output settings and the active HDMI input, then repeat the game calibration after the Remastered update. Display manufacturers use different labels and processing rules, so the control names and their effects can vary.

HDR troubleshooting by symptom

What you see Likely check Corrective action
HDR image looks gray or washed out The display may still be in SDR mode, or the game panel may not have been recalibrated after the update Verify the display’s HDR indicator and active HDMI input, then run the in-game HDR calibration again
Clouds and bright effects are featureless white Highlight clipping or overly strong display tone mapping Reduce HDR tone-mapping intensity on the display before changing unrelated game controls, then recalibrate
Dark areas are invisible Shadow control is too low or the display is crushing blacks Raise the dark-detail control carefully and use a neutral/game HDR preset
Dark areas look gray and foggy Shadow control is too high or black-level handling is mismatched Lower the shadow setting and verify the display’s HDR and black-level behavior
HDR options are missing The console may still be on the earlier problematic build or the installation is not updated Install the current update, restart the game and look for the updated HDR calibration panel

Update before judging performance

Patch 4.03 addressed several PS5-specific problems that can distort a mode comparison. It fixed dark inventory shadows in Performance Mode, autosave stutter on next-generation consoles, and performance drops while using Witcher Senses in Beauclair and Novigrad.

Install the latest available update, restart the game and test the same area again before deciding that a mode is inherently unstable. A save made before a patch can also be useful for repeating the same traversal or combat sequence, but do not treat one location as a guarantee for every scene.

A practical setup procedure

  1. Update the game. Confirm that the installation has the latest patch available for your console.
  2. Identify the build. Check whether you are running the current Remastered version or the earlier next-gen build, because their Ray Tracing targets differ.
  3. Configure the PS5 display output. If you have a VRR-capable display and a PS5 Pro, enable VRR and use the display’s correct HDMI input mode.
  4. Select a graphics mode. Start with Performance for responsiveness, or select Ray Tracing when enhanced lighting is the deciding factor.
  5. Calibrate HDR in the game. Use the dark-detail and highlight goals rather than copying a number from another television or monitor.
  6. Set the display. Use a neutral or game HDR preset and disable processing that adds latency or clips highlights.
  7. Validate the result. Check a dark interior, a bright sky and a combat encounter. Look for preserved shadow detail, textured highlights and camera movement that feels comfortable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying old 30-FPS advice to the Remastered version. The current Remastered Ray Tracing target on PS5 is 60 FPS; the 30-FPS target belongs to the earlier next-gen build.
  • Calling a target a lock. Publisher frame-rate targets describe the intended ceiling or operating goal, not a guarantee in every scene.
  • Assuming VRR is required for every mode. VRR is specifically tied to the Remastered PS5 Pro Performance behavior of up to 90 FPS. It is not a prerequisite for the ordinary 60-FPS targets.
  • Using a fixed resolution claim. The earlier next-gen modes use dynamic resolution scaling, so a single native-resolution label is misleading.
  • Calibrating HDR with a copied value. Different displays tone-map HDR differently; visual goals are more reliable than an identical slider position.
  • Changing several controls at once. Alter one setting, inspect dark and bright detail, and then adjust the display or game control that directly affects the symptom.
  • Testing before patching. Patch 4.03 changed PS5 shadow, autosave and Witcher Sense performance behavior, so an unpatched result may not represent the maintained build.
