There is no independently tested overall winner for The Forest server hosting in 2026. The right choice depends on your group’s player count, the nearest available region, renewal price, configuration access, and how easily you can back up and restore saves. Current listings provide useful starting points: Nitrado shows 8-, 12-, and 20-slot monthly plans; GPORTAL shows 10- and 12-slot plans plus a 90-day option; GameServerKings advertises automated updates and five backup slots but does not publish a comparable price in the available listing.
Use the tables below to shortlist a plan, then confirm the checkout currency, taxes, renewal term, location, allocated ports, and included features. If you prefer full control and already have a suitable always-on computer and network, The Forest also has a dedicated-server tool that can be installed through Steam’s Tools section or SteamCMD.
Current The Forest hosting plans at a glance
The following prices and features are provider-published listings viewed on October 13, 2026. They are not an independent performance test or a market average. Availability can change by country, billing term, and data-center capacity.
| Provider | Published capacity and term | Published location or platform details | Published controls and extras | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nitrado | 8 slots for $12.99 per 30 days; 12 slots for $17.79 per 30 days; 20 slots for $24.99 per 30 days | PC; offer page displays Frankfurt, London, New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, Singapore, Tokyo, and Sydney | Modded hosting advertised | Groups that want a clearly listed slot ladder and several displayed regions |
| GPORTAL | 10 slots for $15.99 per 30 days; 12 slots for $17.47 per 30 days; 10 slots for $43.17 per 90 days | Central Europe offer shown | Web-interface configuration editing; 50 GB of backup storage advertised | Players who value browser-based settings and a stated backup-storage allowance |
| GameServerKings | Price not stated in the captured listing | Provider-managed Forest server; its September 12, 2026 guide describes a Windows application running under a compatibility layer | Automated updates and five control-panel backup slots advertised | Administrators prioritizing provider-stated update and backup tools |
“Backup storage” or “backup slots” describes the advertised quantity, not the quality of the restore process. Before paying, find out whether backups are automatic, how often they run, how long they are retained, whether you can download them, and whether restoring one replaces the live save immediately.

How to choose the best host for your group
1. Match the slot limit to the people who actually play
Choose a slot count that covers your regular group and occasional guests. An 8-slot plan suits a fixed small group and corresponds to the default maximum documented in the Steam Community dedicated-server tutorial. A 10- or 12-slot plan leaves room for friends who join intermittently. A 20-slot plan is useful only if your community can fill it; paying for unused slots is a recurring cost, not a performance upgrade.
Do not assume that a higher advertised slot limit means better tick rate, lower latency, or more CPU headroom. The available provider pages do not supply controlled, like-for-like performance measurements.
2. Put the server near most players
Geographic proximity usually reduces the distance packets travel, but the listing alone cannot guarantee a particular ping. Count where most players live, then select the nearest available location. Nitrado’s displayed US offer page includes European, North American, Asian, and Australian cities. GPORTAL’s captured offer is for Central Europe. Locations can disappear or become unavailable at checkout, so verify the actual data center before ordering.
If your group is spread across continents, choose the region that minimizes the worst player’s experience rather than optimizing for one person. A short trial term is safer than committing to a long renewal when the provider does not publish a latency guarantee.
3. Compare equivalent billing terms
Monthly and multi-month prices are not directly comparable. The listed GPORTAL 10-slot price of $43.17 is for 90 days, while its $15.99 price is for 30 days. Divide the longer term by its number of months only as a budgeting aid, then check whether the displayed total includes tax, setup fees, or a promotion that expires at renewal. Providers can change both introductory and recurring prices.

- Compact Travel-Friendly Design: Perfectly portable for date nights, vacations, and weekend getaways with its small box that fits easily in bags and luggage without sacrificing quality components
- Beautiful Illustrated Cards: Stunning fairy tale character artwork with intricate botanical details and elegant brushwork makes analyzing your options quick and enjoyable during each game

- Balanced 2-Player Experience: Expertly designed trick-taking mechanics ensure neither player gains unfair advantage, rewarding strategic thinking and creating intense memorable moments every game
4. Check configuration access before you need it
A web editor can be more convenient than editing files over a remote connection, but convenience does not prove that every setting is exposed. Ask whether the panel lets you change the world name, password, administration list, save, difficulty, and server identity token; whether changes require a restart; and whether the panel rewrites files when the server starts.
GameServerKings specifically warns in its September 12, 2026 guide that some provider-panel values can overwrite configuration at startup. Treat that as a provider-specific behavior, not a rule for every host. Keep a copy of your intended settings and check the effective configuration after each restart.
5. Evaluate backup and restore controls, not just the advertised number
GPORTAL advertises 50 GB of backup storage, while GameServerKings advertises five control-panel backup slots. Those figures measure different things and cannot be ranked without retention and restore details. A useful backup system should show:
- When each backup was created and which save it contains.
- Whether backups run automatically or only when you click a button.
- How many restore points remain after the oldest is rotated out.
- Whether you can download a copy before experimenting with mods or configuration.
- Whether restoration is possible while the server is stopped and how long it takes.
Make a manual backup before changing difficulty, installing mods, or inviting a new administrator. A backup that exists but cannot be restored predictably is not a substitute for a tested recovery procedure.
Provider-by-provider assessment
Nitrado: the clearest slot-and-location menu
Nitrado’s US offer page lists three 30-day PC plans: 8 slots for $12.99, 12 slots for $17.79, and 20 slots for $24.99. It displays Frankfurt, London, New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, Singapore, Tokyo, and Sydney, and advertises modded hosting.

- RICH STRATEGY & COMPONENTS: Explore a modular game board with 12 location tiles, gather resources, complete legendary deeds, encounter mysterious creatures, and use dozens of cards, tokens, and unique player boards to shape every adventure.
- YOUR CHOICES SHAPE THE STORY: Every moral decision influences your reputation as a noble hero or cunning villain while affecting your path through the forest and your race for fame and victory.

- FOR FANTASY & STRATEGY FANS: Designed for families, teens, and adults who enjoy adventure games, storytelling, exploration, resource management, and immersive fantasy board game experiences.
This structure is useful when you know your expected player count and want to select a region from a visible list. The 8-slot tier is the lowest published monthly entry in the compared offers, while the 20-slot tier costs more because it reserves substantially more capacity. The listing does not establish how those plans perform under identical worlds, mods, or player loads. Confirm that the city you need is available for The Forest—not merely shown somewhere on the page—and verify the renewal total at checkout.
GPORTAL: browser configuration and two billing horizons
GPORTAL’s captured Central Europe offer lists 10 slots for $15.99 per 30 days, 12 slots for $17.47 per 30 days, and 10 slots for $43.17 per 90 days. The page advertises web-interface configuration editing and 50 GB of backup storage.
The browser editor can suit an administrator who wants to change settings without manually locating configuration files. The 90-day listing gives a longer billing horizon, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed discount until you compare the effective monthly cost and the renewal terms. The stated 50 GB is storage capacity, not a promise of a particular number of snapshots or a measured restore time. Check how the panel handles saves, restarts, and mod changes in your region.
GameServerKings: update and backup features, with provider-specific caveats
GameServerKings’ current offer description says Forest hosting includes automated updates and five backup slots. Its September 12, 2026 guide explains that its managed server is a Windows application running under a compatibility layer and that panel settings can overwrite some configuration values at startup. It also notes that a query-port mismatch can leave a running server difficult to find.

No comparable price was captured for this offer, so calculate the full recurring total yourself before considering it alongside the priced plans. Verify available locations, the slot limit, renewal price, backup retention, and the exact port assignments. The compatibility-layer and query-port details apply to this provider’s setup; they should not be assumed for another host.

What “best” cannot be concluded from these listings
The available pages do not provide a controlled comparison of latency, uptime, CPU allocation, disk speed, crash frequency, customer-support response, or performance with the same world and player load. Provider feature descriptions are useful for identifying capabilities, but they are not independent measurements.
For a fair personal comparison, use the same slot count, currency, term length, nearest region, password policy, mod set, and backup expectations. Record the actual checkout total and the renewal price. If possible, test the server during the hours your group normally plays and ask every regular player to note connection quality. Keep those observations separate from the provider’s marketing claims.

Rented-server setup checklist
A rented server normally avoids router configuration and operating-system maintenance, but you still need to configure identity, access, and saves.
- Select the slot tier and region. Choose capacity for your regular group, then confirm the data center shown in the order summary.
- Record the allocated ports. Use the provider’s Network tab or documentation. Do not copy the self-hosting tutorial’s example ports into a rented panel unless the host explicitly assigns them.
- Set the server name and password. Use a name your friends can recognize and a password that is not reused elsewhere. Limit the password distribution to the intended group.
- Configure administrators. Add only trusted accounts or identifiers, and document who can change settings or restore saves.
- Apply world and gameplay settings. Change one category at a time, save the panel configuration, and restart only when the panel says it is required.
- Create and test a backup. Make a snapshot before the first public session, then confirm that the panel shows it and explains how to restore it.
- Connect from a second account. Have a non-administrator join, load the world, and verify that the server appears in the expected list. If it does not, check the provider-assigned query port and server status.
- Write down the renewal date. Save the recurring price, cancellation deadline, selected location, slot count, and backup procedure outside the hosting panel.
Self-hosting The Forest dedicated server
Self-hosting can reduce rental fees and provide direct access to files, but you become responsible for availability, updates, network forwarding, security, backups, and troubleshooting. The Steam Community “Dedicated Server Tutorial” documents installation from Steam’s Tools section or with SteamCMD. Its page identifies game version v1.07 and was last updated January 23, 2019, so regard its port and default settings as a documented baseline rather than a guarantee for every current server build.
Install the dedicated-server tool
- Steam Tools method: Open the Steam client, view the Tools section in your library, locate The Forest Dedicated Server, and install it.
- SteamCMD method: Install SteamCMD, authenticate as required by the current Steam distribution process, and use the dedicated-server app ID documented by the current instructions. Confirm the app and files before exposing the server to the internet.
- Keep the server files separate from personal saves. Use a clearly named directory and restrict write access to the account that runs the server. The cited tutorial does not establish a universal operating-system or hardware requirement, so check the current server package documentation for your platform.
Create the server identity token securely
The tutorial identifies game app ID 242760 for creating a server identity token. Treat the token like a password. Do not paste it into chat, screenshots, public issue reports, or a shared document. Enter it only in the intended server configuration or hosting panel, and replace it if you believe it has been exposed.
Best Value
- Beautiful Hidden Object scenes
- Lushly detailed and unique landscapes to discover
- Meet characters that explore the world along with you
- Use your unique magical ability to solve puzzles and uncover clues
Configure with command-line parameters or Server.cfg
The tutorial describes two configuration paths: command-line parameters and a Server.cfg file. When the same setting appears in both places, its documented rule is that command-line values override matching entries in the configuration file. Keep a written record of the launch command so you know which value is authoritative.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →On a rented server, a provider panel may generate or overwrite these files. On a self-hosted machine, save a copy of Server.cfg before each change, use one source of truth for each setting, and restart the server after editing. If a value appears to revert, inspect the launch command and the startup script before changing the file again.
Forward the documented baseline ports
The Steam tutorial lists standard ports 8766, 27015, and 27016 for TCP/UDP forwarding. In a self-hosting setup, forward the protocol and port combinations required by the current server package through your router and allow them through the host firewall. The tutorial’s documented default maximum is eight players.
These numbers come from a guide last updated in 2019. A current server build, a different operating system, or a hosting provider may use different allocations. For a rented server, use the ports shown by the provider rather than forwarding these values blindly.
Test locally before inviting everyone
- Start the server with the identity token and configuration in place.
- Check the server log for startup errors, port-binding failures, and configuration warnings.
- Join from the host machine or local network if the package supports that test.
- Ask a player outside your home network to connect. This reveals router forwarding and firewall problems that a local test can hide.
- Stop the server cleanly and confirm that the world save remains present before enabling automatic restarts.
Troubleshooting connection and configuration problems
The server is running but nobody can find it
- Confirm that the process is still running and that the server log shows successful startup.
- Recheck the allocated query port. GameServerKings’ September 2026 guidance specifically warns that a query-port mismatch can make a running server hard to find.
- For self-hosting, verify both router forwarding and the host firewall for the required TCP/UDP ports.
- For rented hosting, compare the game and query ports in the provider panel with the values supplied to players.
- Restart after correcting one value, then test from an external connection.
A setting keeps changing back
- Inspect the launch command for a command-line value that overrides
Server.cfg. - On a managed host, check whether the panel rewrites the file at startup.
- Save the panel configuration, restart, and read the effective value from the panel or log.
- Do not edit several settings at once; isolate the value that is being overwritten.
A save is damaged or progress disappears
- Stop the server before copying or restoring save files.
- Identify the newest known-good snapshot by date and player progress.
- Restore to a separate location first when the panel permits it, or download a copy before replacing the live save.
- Ask players to verify the recovered world before deleting older backups.
Players cannot connect after an update
Check that every client is running the same current game build and that the server completed its update. GameServerKings advertises automated updates, but update behavior differs by host. On self-hosted installations, schedule maintenance, keep a backup, and verify the dedicated-server package version before opening the server again.
Security and administration practices
- Keep the server identity token private; the Steam tutorial explicitly advises against sharing the login token.
- Use a unique server password and rotate it when a player leaves the group.
- Give administrator privileges to the smallest practical number of people.
- Back up before installing mods, changing world settings, or accepting a new administrative account.
- Keep the operating system, SteamCMD or Steam tool, and provider panel account protected with current credentials and multi-factor authentication where available.
- Do not publish router, firewall, panel, or token screenshots that reveal credentials or internal addresses.
A practical buying decision
Choose the lowest slot tier that covers your normal group, then choose the nearest confirmed region. If the monthly budget matters most, Nitrado’s listed 8-slot plan is the lowest-priced monthly entry among the captured offers at $12.99 for 30 days. If you need 10 or 12 slots, compare Nitrado and GPORTAL using the same term and currency rather than comparing a 30-day price with GPORTAL’s 90-day listing. If browser configuration and a stated backup-storage allowance matter, GPORTAL exposes those features in its listing. If automated updates and five advertised backup slots are the priority, GameServerKings is worth checking, but you must obtain its current price and location before making a cost comparison.
Self-host instead when you need direct file access, can maintain an always-on machine and network, and are comfortable handling port forwarding, updates, credentials, and recovery. Rent instead when predictable availability, a provider-managed panel, and simpler networking are worth the recurring fee.
Final verdict
The best The Forest host in 2026 is the one that matches your player count and region while giving you a backup and restore process you can verify. Current listings support a practical shortlist, not a universal ranking: Nitrado offers the broadest displayed slot and location menu, GPORTAL highlights browser configuration and advertised backup storage, and GameServerKings emphasizes automated updates and five backup slots. Confirm every volatile detail at checkout, and treat self-hosting’s 2019 documented ports and eight-player default as starting points that must be checked against the current server build.
