The best Terraria server hosting depends on how much administration your group wants to do. Self-hosting costs no hosting fee and gives you full control, while a rented server keeps the world online without requiring one player’s computer to stay connected. For a small vanilla world, the official Terraria guidance cites 500 MB of free RAM; larger worlds and more players need more. Modded groups should choose a host that explicitly supports tModLoader or tShock.

What “best Terraria server hosting” means
A dedicated Terraria server runs the world on a separate computer. The official Terraria Wiki describes the benefit this way: “A server allows the game world to run on a separate computer, with no graphical requirements, and without requiring any particular player to remain connected.” See the official multiplayer guidance for that distinction.
That makes a dedicated server different from Host & Play. Host & Play is convenient for a short session, but the world normally ends when the host leaves. A dedicated server is the better fit when friends play at different times, when the owner cannot stay online, or when a persistent community world matters.
#1 Best Overall
- In Terraria, every world is unique-from the floating islands in the sky to the deepest level of The Underworld. Adventure to the ends of the earth, and defeat villainous bosses along the way. The world is your canvas!
There is no single provider that is objectively best for every group. Decide first whether you want to operate the server yourself, then compare paid plans on the resources and controls that affect your world.
Choose between self-hosting and a paid host
Self-hosting: maximum control and no hosting bill
Terraria includes dedicated-server software, so you can run a world on a spare desktop, home server, or cloud machine. You choose the operating environment, world files, backups, mods, and update timing. The trade-off is administration: the machine must remain available, networking must be configured, and you are responsible for recovery when the process or computer stops.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Self-hosting is usually sensible when one member of the group is comfortable with networking and can leave a computer running. It is less attractive when nobody wants to troubleshoot port forwarding, firewall rules, updates, or corrupted world files.
Paid hosting: less maintenance and an always-available world
A provider supplies the machine, a control panel, network connectivity, and some combination of backups, updates, support, and DDoS protection. You still need to select a world, set permissions, install mods when applicable, and verify that the provider supports your Terraria edition and version. A paid plan removes hardware and most connectivity chores; it does not remove the need to check compatibility or maintain your world.
Host & Play: fine for occasional sessions
For a small group that plays only when one person is present, Host & Play may be enough. It avoids a monthly bill, but the host’s game session and connection become the availability limit. Move to a dedicated server when players need to join independently.

| Provider and listing | Example plan shown | Advertised features | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| BisectHosting (USD listing) | 2 GB: $5.99/month; 4 GB: $11.99/month | tModLoader and tShock support, three days of free backups, automated updates, 21 advertised locations, and 24/7 support | Verify the location, backup retention, renewal amount, and availability at checkout. |
| Shockbyte (Australia-region page, AUD) | Vanilla 2 GB/four players: A$7.17/month; Modded 4 GB/12 players: A$14.35/month; Custom 5 GB+/15+ players: A$17.25/month | Advertises tModLoader and tShock, automatic backups and updates, DDoS protection, 24/7 support, and a 72-hour self-service refund | These are Australian-region prices. Do not treat them as a universal price or convert them into a global ranking. |
| Nodecraft (USD monthly configuration) | Starting at US$4.17/month | Terraria PC and mobile listings, edition switching, tModLoader and tShock installation; the provider says player slots are not limited beyond game limits | A starting price does not establish the final plan, performance, renewal cost, or location for your group. |
No comparable independent latency, uptime, support-response, or performance test was available for these listings. Treat uptime, speed, security, refund, and support statements as provider claims unless you can verify them for your own region.
How much RAM does a Terraria server need?
The official dedicated-server guidance lists 500 MB of free RAM for a small world and says memory needs depend on world size and player count. That figure is a small-world reference, not a universal minimum for every map, player group, or mod collection.
| Situation | What the available guidance establishes | How to use it when choosing a plan |
|---|---|---|
| Small vanilla world | 500 MB free RAM is cited by the official wiki. | Use it as a baseline for a lightly populated world, while leaving headroom for the operating system and other processes. |
| Larger world or more players | The official guidance says RAM requirements rise with world size and player count. | Prefer a plan with additional memory and monitor actual usage rather than treating 500 MB as a hard ceiling. |
| Modded world | Provider plans may allocate or recommend more RAM, but those recommendations are vendor guidance rather than neutral minimum requirements. | Check the requirements of the exact tModLoader or tShock version and mod list; allow room for join spikes and backups. |
Do not select a plan solely because its advertised RAM number is larger. CPU allocation, storage performance, network location, backups, and the host’s control panel can matter just as much for a smooth shared world. Ask how much memory is actually dedicated to the server and whether the advertised amount includes the operating system.
How to host a Terraria server yourself
The official wiki’s dedicated-server page is the authoritative reference for the current server software. The practical workflow is:

- Choose a machine that can stay online. Use a separate computer or cloud instance rather than relying on the player who happens to host each session. A dedicated server has no graphical requirement, so it does not need to render the game.
- Install the official dedicated-server software. Download the server files from the official Terraria distribution or follow the platform-specific instructions on the wiki. Keep the server version aligned with the clients your group will use.
- Create or select the world. Decide whether to generate a new world or point the server at an existing world file. Keep an untouched backup before making major changes or installing mods.
- Set the player limit. The official guidance lists a default maximum of 16 players. The limit can be configured at startup or in the server configuration, subject to the capabilities of your setup.
- Configure the network port. Terraria’s default server port is TCP 7777. On a residential connection behind NAT, forward that port from the router to the server computer and allow the server through the computer’s firewall.
- Open cloud firewall rules. For a cloud deployment, allow TCP and UDP 7777 in the instance’s firewall or security group, in addition to any operating-system firewall rule. Restrict administrative access separately; do not expose management services unnecessarily.
- Start the server and test locally. Join from the same network first, confirm that the intended world loads, and check that the configured player limit and permissions behave as expected.
- Test from outside the home network. Have a friend connect from another network. This catches incorrect port forwarding, a changing public IP address, or a firewall rule that a local test cannot reveal.
- Plan backups and updates. Copy the world files on a schedule, keep at least one version away from the server machine, and take an additional backup before a Terraria update or mod change. Record how to restore the previous world.
- Document the connection details. Give players the public address and port, plus any password or whitelist process you use. If your public IP changes, update the address you distribute.
If outside players cannot connect, check the server process first, then the local firewall, router forwarding, cloud firewall, and the address being shared. A successful local connection does not prove that the server is reachable from the internet.
What to compare in Terraria server hosting
Total cost and billing terms
Compare the recurring price in your own currency, not just the headline rate. Confirm whether the displayed amount is promotional, whether it changes at renewal, which billing interval is selected, and whether taxes or setup fees are added. A monthly price from an Australian page cannot be compared directly with a USD monthly listing without accounting for exchange rates and regional terms.
Vanilla, tModLoader, and tShock support
Vanilla Terraria needs only the standard server software. Modded groups should verify that the panel supports the exact tModLoader or tShock release they intend to run, permits their mod count, and provides a documented install or rollback path. “Mod support” on a marketing page does not guarantee compatibility with every mod or with every game update.
Memory, player guidance, and resource isolation
Look for a clear RAM allocation and practical player guidance. The official 500 MB note applies to a small world; provider plan labels such as “four players” or “12 players” are package recommendations, not universal technical limits. Ask whether CPU time and storage are shared, capped, or dedicated if the group expects a large map or frequent mod activity.

Updates and version control
Automatic updates are convenient but can break a modded world or make clients and server versions disagree. Find out whether updates can be delayed, whether the panel supports rollbacks, and how the provider handles Terraria, tModLoader, and tShock version changes.
Location and latency
Choose a data-center region close to most players. A provider’s number of locations does not tell you which locations are available on the specific plan. Ask for the actual region before checkout and test connectivity during the refund period when one is offered.
Support, cancellation, and refunds
Confirm the support channel, hours, expected response process, cancellation timing, and refund conditions. A “24/7” label does not tell you whether support is live chat, tickets, or a self-service knowledge base. Read the terms for renewals and partial-month refunds rather than relying on a banner.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which type of plan fits your group?
Two to four players on a vanilla world
Start with self-hosting if someone can keep the machine online and manage networking. If not, choose the smallest paid vanilla plan that provides enough memory, a nearby location, and usable backups. Do not pay for a large modded package that your group will not use.
A regular group that plays at different times
A paid dedicated server is often worth the convenience because the world remains available without a particular player. Prioritize reliable backups, predictable renewal pricing, and a control panel that makes world and permission management straightforward.
A modded community
Choose a host that explicitly lists tModLoader or tShock, then verify the exact versions and installation limits. Allocate more memory than a small vanilla world requires, keep a clean pre-mod backup, and disable automatic updates until you have confirmed that the mod stack is compatible.

A larger or public group
Use the official 16-player default as a planning reference, then confirm how the host handles a higher configured limit and whether the game version supports your intended population. You will need stronger moderation, more frequent backups, and a clear recovery plan in addition to more server resources.
Provider-specific considerations
BisectHosting
The Terraria listing advertises tModLoader and tShock support, automated updates, three days of free backups, 21 locations, and 24/7 support. Those are useful features to verify during checkout, especially the backup retention and the location offered to your account. The listed 2 GB and 4 GB packages are examples from the provider’s USD page, not independent recommendations for every world.
Shockbyte
The cited page is specifically for Australia and presents separate vanilla, modded, and custom packages. It advertises tModLoader and tShock, automatic backups and updates, DDoS protection, 24/7 support, and a 72-hour self-service refund. If your players are elsewhere, open the appropriate regional page and compare its currency, terms, and available locations instead of using the Australian figures.
Nodecraft
The USD monthly page advertises Terraria PC and mobile support, edition switching, and tModLoader or tShock installation. It says player slots are not limited beyond the game’s limits. Treat the displayed starting price as an entry point only: select the actual region, memory allocation, billing term, and features your group needs before comparing it with another provider.
Common problems and fixes
Friends cannot connect
- Confirm that the server is running and listening on TCP 7777 unless you intentionally changed the port.
- For a home server, verify router forwarding points to the correct local address and that the operating-system firewall allows the server.
- For a cloud server, check both the instance firewall and the provider’s network security group; allow TCP and UDP 7777 as required by the deployment guidance.
- Have a player outside your network test the public address. Do not use the local address when testing from the internet.
Players see a version or mod mismatch
- Confirm every client and the server use the same Terraria version.
- For tModLoader or tShock, compare the loader release and each enabled mod, then roll back to the last known-good backup if an update caused the problem.
- Pause automatic updates until the group has tested the new combination.
The server becomes unstable as the group grows
- Measure memory use while the world is busy rather than relying on the small-world baseline.
- Reduce unnecessary mods or move to a plan with more resources after checking whether CPU or storage, rather than RAM, is the bottleneck.
- Review logs and restore a recent backup if a world file was damaged during a crash.
A world was changed or lost
- Stop the server before replacing a world file so that no process is writing to it.
- Restore the newest known-good backup, then make a separate copy before allowing players back in.
- Keep at least one backup outside the provider account; hosted snapshots do not protect you from every account, billing, or configuration failure.
A practical buying checklist
- Is self-hosting realistic for the person who would administer it?
- Is the listed price in your region and currency, and what will renewal cost?
- Does the plan support vanilla, tModLoader, or tShock exactly as required?
- How much RAM is allocated, and what player or world guidance does the provider give?
- Where is the server located relative to the players?
- How often are backups made, how long are they retained, and can you restore or download them?
- Can automatic updates be delayed or rolled back?
- What support channel and refund window apply to the selected plan?
- Can you export the world if you cancel?
For a small, technically confident group, self-hosting remains a legitimate first choice because Terraria supplies dedicated-server software and the official guidance is modest for a small world. For groups that need an always-online world without maintaining a machine and network, a paid host is justified when its location, backups, mod support, and renewal terms match the way you actually play.
