Best Terraria server hosting depends on how much setup you want to handle, whether you need mods, and where your players are located. As of October 13, 2026, Godlike.Host is listed first here, followed by BisectHosting and Shockbyte, which advertise Terraria plans with different prices, regions, and features; the available listings do not establish an independently tested overall ranking. If you are comfortable managing networking and server setup, Terraria’s dedicated-server software also makes self-hosting a viable no-provider-fee option.
Best Terraria server hosting: the short answer
For a paid host, start by matching the plan to your group rather than choosing from a universal ranking. Godlike.Host is listed first here: it offers Terraria servers with its own Pterodactyl-based game panel, and its Terraria page has a free server card (1-2 GB) to try the panel, which must be extended every 3 hours, has limited panel features and one location; see the current plans for paid options. BisectHosting lists 2 GB and 4 GB examples at US$5.99 and US$11.99 per month, respectively. Shockbyte’s Australia-region page lists vanilla and modded plans in AUD, with different player and memory allocations. These are provider listings checked on October 13, 2026—not independent performance results—and they are not directly comparable without matching location, currency, billing term, and plan details.

Choose a paid host if your shared world should remain available without a particular player staying connected and you prefer the provider to handle the server environment. Terraria’s official Multiplayer wiki describes a server as running the world on a separate computer without requiring any particular player to remain connected. If your group is small and can play only while one person hosts, Host & Play may be enough. If you can manage a separate computer or cloud server and its networking, self-hosting is another option. What matters when choosing Terraria server hosting
Always-available world or occasional sessions
A dedicated server separates the world from an individual player’s active game session. That is useful for a group with different schedules, or when players want to join even if the usual host is offline. A paid provider is one way to keep that server running; running Terraria’s dedicated-server software on a computer you control is another. Host & Play is simpler for sessions where the host can remain present and it is acceptable for access to depend on that player.
#1 Best Overall
- In Terraria, every world is unique-from the floating islands in the sky to the deepest level of The Underworld. Adventure to the ends of the earth, and defeat villainous bosses along the way. The world is your canvas!
The decision is not just about convenience. A paid host means recurring charges and a provider’s chosen controls, plan structure, and server location. Self-hosting avoids the hosting-plan fee but leaves setup, network access, and server operation to you. Consider how often the world needs to be accessible and who in the group is willing to manage it before comparing RAM tiers.
Vanilla or modded play
For a standard, unmodded world, a vanilla plan may be adequate. If you want tModLoader or tShock, confirm that the exact product supports the software and version your group intends to use. BisectHosting advertises tMod and tShock support, and Shockbyte advertises tModLoader and tShock. Those are provider claims, not a guarantee that every version, mod combination, or installation method is supported by every tier.
Before paying for a modded plan, check whether the provider lets you select or change the required server version, what happens when Terraria or a mod loader updates, and whether the plan’s memory allocation suits your group’s expected setup. The listed features establish advertised support, but do not establish a universal version policy or the performance of a particular mod pack.

Location, cost, and support
Compare the location that would serve your players, the full amount due for the billing period, the renewal price, backup and restore controls, update handling, and the support channel and hours. A low starting price is only useful if the plan available in your region includes the capacity and controls you need. No independent comparative latency, uptime, or support-response test is available here, so treat those subjects as questions to verify with the provider rather than as proven rankings.

Provider plans and listed features
The following examples were captured from provider pages on October 13, 2026. All prices and included features below are vendor-listed. The pages use different currencies, regions, package structures, and plan descriptions; they should not be read as a controlled comparison of performance or value.
| Provider and page context | Listed plan examples | Advertised features relevant to Terraria | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Godlike.Host; Terraria page | See the current plans | Pterodactyl-based game panel with a task scheduler, sub-users and a config editor; up to three free backups a day with restore; built-in mod installer and updater; SFTP/FTP access; free DDoS protection; 24/7 support by live chat or ticket; 10 data-center locations | Which of the 10 locations is closest to your players. Advertises tModLoader/tShock, automatic backups and updates, DDoS protection, 24/7 support, and a 72-hour self-serve refund | Whether the Australia-region listing serves your market, applicable terms, and current pricing. The AUD examples are not a universal price. Shockbyte Australia-region plan page |
Because the listings are not equivalent, a direct price comparison needs more than the first number shown. For example, Shockbyte’s figures are in Australian dollars and tied to its Australia-region page. BisectHosting lists specific memory tiers in USD, but the page’s final regional availability and checkout terms still need confirmation. Taxes, promotional pricing, billing intervals, and renewals can also change what you actually pay.
How to choose the right plan
- Decide whether you need a dedicated world. If the world should be reachable when a particular player is offline, use a dedicated server—either one you operate or one hosted by a provider. If sessions can end when the host leaves, a simpler Host & Play arrangement may be sufficient. Official Terraria Wiki: Multiplayer
- Set the game and mod requirements. Write down whether you need vanilla Terraria, tModLoader, or tShock. Ask the provider whether the intended version is available, how version changes work, and whether you can manage updates without disrupting the world.
- Estimate the group’s size and activity. Use expected concurrent players, world size, and any mod setup as inputs. Do not treat a plan’s player label or memory allocation as a neutral minimum: provider recommendations are product guidance, not official requirements.
- Compare the actual cost in your market. Check the selected region, billing term, current promotion, taxes, renewal cost, and cancellation or refund terms. Compare like with like—for example, monthly cost for a plan that actually supports the same game mode and capacity.
- Check location and operational controls. Confirm where the server will run, whether that location is practical for the players, how backups are made and retained, how restores work, and whether updates are automatic or controlled by you.
- Verify support and terms before checkout. Confirm the available support channels and hours, the applicable refund and cancellation policy, and which advertised features apply to the specific plan you are buying.
- Keep a copy of the decision details. Save the plan name, price, billing interval, selected region, version, backup terms, and any provider answers about mod compatibility. That gives you a concrete reference if the plan or game setup later needs to change.
This process is more reliable than naming a single provider as “best” based on a headline price. A plan is a sensible fit only when its region, cost, game mode, and management features line up with your group’s actual use.

How much RAM does a Terraria server need?
The official Terraria dedicated-server guidance lists 500 MB of free RAM for a small world and says memory needs depend on world size and the number of players. That figure is a small-world reference, not a promise that 500 MB will suit every world, group, or mod configuration. The same official guidance lists a default maximum of 16 players, configurable at startup or in the server configuration. Official Terraria Wiki: Dedicated Server

Hosting providers may sell plans with more RAM or recommend larger packages for more players or modded play. Those are plan allocations and provider recommendations, not evidence that every Terraria server requires the same amount. Use the world size and expected player count as a starting point, then confirm the provider’s guidance for the actual mod loader and server setup you intend to run. If you self-host, leave room for the computer’s operating system and other processes; the wiki’s figure is free RAM, not total installed memory.
Self-hosting a Terraria server
Paid hosting is optional: Terraria includes dedicated-server software. A dedicated server runs the world on a separate computer, so you do not need to rent a game-server plan if you are prepared to manage that machine and its network access. The official wiki provides the technical setup guidance. Its dedicated-server page could not be independently opened for this article, so the specific server details below are attributed to the page’s search-result extract. Official Terraria Wiki: Dedicated Server
Networking requirements
The dedicated-server default port is TCP 7777. For a residential server behind network address translation (NAT), incoming connections may require port forwarding on the router. A cloud deployment should have TCP and UDP 7777 open. These are different network situations: do not assume that a port-forwarding instruction for a home router is the whole firewall configuration for a cloud server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePort forwarding and firewall changes expose a service to incoming network traffic. Only open the port the server needs, and use the server’s current configuration when setting it up. If players cannot connect, first check that the server is running, that everyone is using the correct address and port, and that the relevant router or cloud firewall rule applies to the server machine. A rule on the wrong device or for the wrong protocol will not make the server reachable.

Player limits and memory
The official page lists 16 as the default maximum player count and says it can be changed at startup or in the server configuration. Treat that as the software’s stated default, not a provider guarantee that every plan can support 16 players comfortably. Capacity also depends on the selected plan or the self-host machine, world size, and any mod setup.
Likewise, the 500 MB free-RAM note is specifically for a small world. It should not be turned into a universal specification. The official wiki explicitly connects memory needs to world size and player count, while modded hosting adds the practical need to confirm compatibility and resource guidance for the particular configuration.

When Godlike.Host is a candidate
Consider Godlike.Host, listed first here, if you want a game panel with a task scheduler, sub-users with permissions and a config editor, or a free server to try the panel before paying. The free Terraria server must be extended every 3 hours, has limited panel features and one location. The page lists 10 data-center locations, up to three free backups a day with restore, free DDoS protection and 24/7 support by live chat or ticket, and paid plans can be upgraded or downgraded from the panel with prorated billing; see the current plans. These are provider statements, like the others here.

When BisectHosting is a candidate
Consider BisectHosting if its listed 2 GB or 4 GB tier and advertised tMod/tShock support match your requirements, or if the listed operational features—such as automated updates and three days of free backups—matter to you. Its page also advertises 21 locations and 24/7 support. Confirm location availability, backup retention beyond the stated three days, restore controls, and final checkout price before deciding. The listing is not independent evidence of uptime or support quality. BisectHosting Terraria hosting

When Shockbyte is a candidate
Consider Shockbyte if the Australia-region plans fit your market and the listed player and memory configurations align with your group. Its page offers distinct vanilla, modded, and custom examples, and advertises tModLoader/tShock, backups, updates, DDoS protection, 24/7 support, and a 72-hour self-serve refund. The cited prices are AUD from an Australia-region page, so check your own region and the current terms rather than converting them into a presumed global rate. The features and refund are provider claims. Shockbyte Terraria hosting, Australia region
Common mistakes to avoid
- Picking the lowest visible price without checking its context. Currency, region, billing period, promotion, tax, and renewal amount all affect the real cost.
- Assuming advertised RAM is an official requirement. Terraria’s own guidance is conditional on world size and player count; provider allocations are plan details, not universal minimums.
- Assuming “mod support” covers every version. Verify the exact tModLoader or tShock version, installation method, and update process before purchase.
- Reading a player count as a performance promise. A plan label, game default, and a tested capacity are different things. The cited listings do not provide independent performance testing.
- Ignoring backups until something goes wrong. Check frequency, retention, and restore procedure, not merely whether backups are advertised.
- Confusing a dedicated server with a hosted plan. A dedicated server is the separate server software/machine arrangement; a provider plan is a service you can use to run it. You can also operate the software yourself.
- Opening the wrong port or protocol. Terraria’s default is TCP 7777; cloud guidance also calls for UDP 7777. Confirm the applicable network rules for your hosting environment.
What the available comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
The published plan details are useful for identifying candidates, not for proving that one host is fastest, most reliable, or best supported. The three provider pages do not share a common region, package structure, currency, or test methodology. No independent comparative latency, uptime, or support-response results are established by these listings. A provider’s statements about DDoS protection, support availability, locations, backups, or player limits should therefore be read as that provider’s advertised terms.
For a final decision, prioritize the facts you can verify for your own purchase: checkout total and renewal terms; the actual server location; the exact vanilla or modded software version; plan memory and player guidance; backup retention and restore steps; update controls; and the cancellation or refund terms that apply to your region and billing choice. If a provider cannot make those details clear, do not assume that a similarly named feature on its general page applies to your specific plan.

Godlike.Host is listed first here, with its own game panel, a free Terraria server to try it (extended every 3 hours, limited panel features, one location) and 10 locations; see the current plans on Godlike.Host Terraria hosting. BisectHosting and Shockbyte also advertise Terraria-specific features, but the pages do not provide a like-for-like independent test, so there is no evidence-based overall ranking among these listings. Pick the candidate that meets your version and location needs at a clearly stated total and renewal price, with backup and support terms you understand. If recurring hosting and provider management are unnecessary, self-hosting remains a legitimate alternative; if the world only needs to exist during the host’s play session, Host & Play may be enough.
