tModLoader must run on the server and on every player’s client. The reliable process is to build and test a mod pack on a PC, save the pack from tModLoader’s Workshop menu, copy its files to the server’s Mods folder, and start the server while watching the console. Clients and server must use the same mod versions. There is no verified, current ranking of individual mods in the available source material, so this guide explains how to choose a suitable pack and install it without pretending that one mod is universally “best.”
What “best Terraria mods” should mean
A good mod is not automatically the best choice for every world. The right pack depends on the experience your group wants, the server hardware and host, and whether everyone can keep the same files and versions. Treat “best” as a compatibility and fit decision rather than a permanent top-ten list.
Recommended Free Tools
Start with the group’s goal
- More content: Choose a pack whose progression, bosses, items and biomes all fit the amount of play time your group expects.
- Convenience: Quality-of-life changes can reduce repetitive work, but every added mod still has to be installed and kept in sync.
- Building and exploration: Prioritize mods that support the activities your players actually do instead of adding unrelated systems.
- Higher difficulty: Make sure everyone agrees to the extra challenge before creating the world; changing the rules mid-world can make progression confusing.
These are selection criteria, not endorsements of named mods. The available installation sources do not provide a tested ranking or a current recommendation list, and the title of one host article mentioning a particular mod is not evidence that it is the best choice.
Check compatibility before you subscribe
Read each mod’s current Workshop description and dependencies, then verify that the author supports the tModLoader branch your server will run. Do not assume that a mod that loaded last year will load after an update. Record the exact versions you tested and distribute the resulting pack rather than asking players to assemble it independently.

How tModLoader multiplayer works
Terraria itself does not load server-side mods by simply placing files beside a vanilla server. The server must run tModLoader, and each player connecting to it must also launch tModLoader with the matching mods enabled. During connection, the game detects differences between the client and server lists or versions. A common result is the message “Mod Version Mismatch.”
The server’s Mods directory contains the compiled .tmod files and the pack metadata. On the client, the same mods are enabled through tModLoader’s interface. A successful connection therefore requires all of the following:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- tModLoader installed on the server.
- tModLoader installed on every client.
- The same mod names enabled on both sides.
- The same mod versions on both sides.
- Any required dependencies present and enabled.
A vanilla world can remain on a host after a reinstall, but one hosting guide recommends giving a modded world a new name. That separates experimental mod changes from an existing vanilla save and makes rollback easier.
Prepare before installing anything
Choose where the server will run
| Server type | What the sources describe | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted control panel | Some panels expose tModLoader as an application or a Server Type setting. | Menu names and file access differ by host. Follow that host’s documentation for the exact path. |
| Self-managed Linux | A dedicated-server management script can install tModLoader from GitHub or SteamCMD. | The official wiki prefers SteamCMD for this workflow. |
| Docker | Docker is described as another recommended way to run the server. | Persist the world and Mods directories outside the container so recreating a container does not erase them. |
Back up worlds and configuration
Stop the server and copy the world files before changing the server type or mod set. Keep a separate copy of the current Mods folder, enabled.json, and install.txt. A backup is especially important when a host’s reinstall process preserves worlds automatically: preservation is useful, but it also means an incompatible mod can be applied to an old save by accident.
Agree on one pack
Have one person create the pack and test it first. Give the group the saved pack or a precise list of enabled mods, not a mixture of screenshots and manually typed names. This eliminates spelling differences and makes future updates reproducible.

Install tModLoader on a hosted server
Panels do not share a universal interface, but the workflow described by hosting guides is consistent.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the server’s control panel and stop the running server.
- Open the installation, application or server-type selector. Choose the entry labeled tModLoader or set Server Type to tmodloader.
- Apply the change. If the panel offers a reinstall, read its warning and confirm that your world and configuration backups are stored elsewhere first.
- Start the server once with no custom pack. Watch the console for a normal tModLoader startup, then stop it. This creates or confirms the expected directory structure.
- Use the panel’s file manager or SFTP to open the server’s
Modsdirectory. - Upload the pack files described in the next section, preserving their names and extensions.
- Start the server again and keep the console visible while each mod loads.
If your panel does not offer tModLoader, do not upload files into a vanilla server and expect them to work. Ask the host whether it supports tModLoader or use a server you control with the self-managed or Docker method.
Install tModLoader on a self-managed Linux server
The sources describe a dedicated-server management script that installs tModLoader from GitHub or SteamCMD. The official wiki prefers SteamCMD for this task. Because script commands and release packages change, use the current instructions from the official tModLoader documentation and the script’s own repository rather than copying an old command from a forum post.
- Create a dedicated, non-root account for the game server and a directory that will hold the installation and saves.
- Install the prerequisites specified by the current tModLoader documentation, then install SteamCMD if you are following the wiki’s preferred route.
- Run the dedicated-server management script or SteamCMD procedure to install the tModLoader server files.
- Launch the server once and stop it cleanly. Confirm that the generated world and
Modsdirectories are in the location your service will use. - Copy the tested pack into that
Modsdirectory, or configure the script to use the pack’s metadata when supported. - Run the server under a service manager or persistent terminal session, and record the exact startup command for the rest of the administrators.
Do not mix files from a different tModLoader installation into the directory. If you change the loader version, retest the entire pack before inviting players.
Build and save the mod pack on your PC
Build the pack with the same tModLoader branch that the server will use.

- Install and launch tModLoader on the PC that will manage the pack.
- Open the Workshop browser and subscribe to the mods you have selected. Subscription downloads the Workshop content to that client; it does not by itself configure your dedicated server.
- Return to tModLoader’s Mods screen and enable the selected entries.
- Use Reload Mods when prompted. Read the messages for missing dependencies or load failures before continuing.
- Open Workshop → Mod Packs and save the enabled list as a pack.
- Open the pack folder and verify that it contains the compiled
.tmodfiles,enabled.json, andinstall.txt. - Launch a test world locally. Check the features your group intends to use, then exit and keep the saved pack unchanged for upload.
The saved pack is preferable to manually downloading files because it captures the exact enabled set. Keep an archive of each tested pack with a date or version label so you can restore the previous set if an update breaks the world.
Upload the pack correctly
Copy the compiled files
Upload every required .tmod file from the saved pack into the server’s Mods folder. Do not rename the files, remove dependencies, or copy only the mod you consider the main feature. A dependency that is missing on the server can prevent the whole set from loading.
Keep install.txt
Workshop mods need install.txt because the Workshop does not identify them by the human-readable mod names alone. Keep the generated file in the pack and upload it with the other metadata. Do not replace it with a hand-written list unless your host’s documentation explicitly instructs you to do so.
Check enabled.json
enabled.json records which mods tModLoader should enable. Each name is written without the .tmod extension, quoted and separated by commas. A syntax example is:
["YourModName","AnotherMod"]
Use the names generated by tModLoader, including capitalization, rather than the display text you remember from a web page. If you edit the file, keep it valid JSON; a missing quote or comma can make the server ignore the list or report a parsing error.

Start the server and verify the result
- Start the tModLoader server with the uploaded pack in place.
- Watch the console from the first load line through world selection. Look for a completed mod-loading stage and note any warning or error that names a mod.
- Stop the server if a required mod fails to load. Fix the pack before players connect; repeatedly joining a half-loaded server makes diagnosis harder.
- Connect with one client that uses the identical saved pack. Confirm that the client reaches the world without a version warning.
- Test a second client before opening the server to the whole group. Have that player exercise the most important content or settings.
Console output is the authoritative first diagnostic. A server that reaches a world-selection prompt is not necessarily healthy if the log also reports disabled dependencies, skipped files or a load exception.

“Mod Version Mismatch”
This message means the server and a client are running different mod versions. Stop both sides, compare the saved pack, and make the client subscribe to or copy the same release that is on the server. Do not solve it by disabling random entries: the enabled names must also match. Restart tModLoader after changing the client set, then reconnect.
A mod is missing on the server
Check that its .tmod file, install.txt and enabled.json are in the server’s actual Mods directory, not a similarly named upload or cache directory. Confirm that the panel has finished uploading before starting the server. If the host automatically manages Workshop downloads, follow its documented process; otherwise upload the complete pack manually.
The server loads but a dependency error appears
Return to the PC pack, enable the dependency identified in the error, reload mods and save the pack again. Upload the revised complete set rather than only the newly discovered file. If the dependency is incompatible with the chosen loader branch, remove the dependent mod or select a supported release.
The console reports a load exception
Record the first mod named in the error and the loader version shown at startup. Test the pack locally with that entry disabled, then re-enable it after updating or correcting its dependency. If the error persists, restore the last known-good pack and keep the affected mod out of the production world until its author provides a compatible version.

A world behaves differently after a change
Stop the server and restore the world backup before experimenting further. Use a newly named modded world for testing, as one hosting guide recommends, so a failed experiment does not become the only copy of an existing save.
The host’s Workshop behavior is unclear
Published guides disagree about automatic Workshop downloads. One says the server does not download Workshop mods itself; another says the official script can download mods listed in install.txt. This behavior depends on the host and installation method. Check the host’s current documentation and inspect the server’s Mods directory after startup instead of assuming either behavior.
Updating, adding or removing mods safely
Updating an existing pack
Make a copy of the working pack and back up the world. Update one logical group at a time on the test PC, reload, and play far enough to exercise the affected systems. Save a new pack only after the test succeeds. Upload it during a maintenance window, then have every client update before reconnecting.
Adding a mod
Add it to the PC pack, resolve dependencies, reload and test a copy of the world. Save the pack and upload all files, not just the new .tmod. A client that connects with the old pack will trigger a mismatch.
Removing a mod
Check whether the mod added items, blocks or world data before disabling it. Make a world backup, remove the entry on the test PC, and load a copy of the world. If the world fails to load or loses required data, restore the backup and re-enable the mod.

Which installation route should you choose?
| Choose this route | When it fits | Main risk to manage |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted panel | You want a graphical control panel and the host explicitly supports tModLoader. | Panel-specific paths, reinstall behavior and Workshop automation differ. |
| Linux plus management script | You need direct control over files, services and backups. | Commands and release procedures change; follow current documentation. |
| SteamCMD-based install | You want the method preferred by the official wiki for a self-managed server. | You must maintain SteamCMD, permissions and the server process yourself. |
| Docker | You already operate containers and want a repeatable deployment. | World and mod directories must be persisted outside disposable containers. |
Practical checklist
- Pick a pack that matches your group’s goal; do not rely on an unverified “best mod” ranking.
- Install tModLoader on the server and all clients.
- Back up worlds and the current pack.
- Build and test the pack on a PC.
- Save it through Workshop → Mod Packs.
- Upload every
.tmod, plusinstall.txtandenabled.json, to the server’sModsfolder. - Keep mod names in
enabled.jsonextension-free, quoted and comma-separated. - Start the server and read the complete console output.
- Give every player the identical pack and versions.
- Use a new world name or a backed-up copy for major experiments.
The Bottom Line
The dependable answer to “how do I add Terraria mods to my server?” is: run tModLoader, create one tested pack on a PC, upload its complete metadata and .tmod files, and keep every client on the same versions. Choose mods by your group’s goals and compatibility rather than an unsupported universal ranking.
