For the most PC-like Galaxy Tab setup, use Taskbar for fast app access and switch to Samsung DeX when you need movable windows, a desktop layout, or an external monitor. Start by checking your exact tablet model and One UI version: Samsung’s menus and display features differ, and some FE-series tablets cannot output video at all. Then arrange your Home-screen favorites, tune DeX for your screen and input devices, and choose wired or wireless display connections only when your model supports them.

This guide separates three jobs: launching apps quickly on the tablet itself, multitasking in windows, and working at a desk with a monitor, keyboard and mouse. Samsung describes Taskbar as a PC-like experience on supported tablets, but the available controls are not identical to those on Galaxy Z Fold phones. Official instructions and compatibility details are linked throughout.

Check your model and One UI version before changing settings

Galaxy Tab features are model- and software-dependent. Samsung’s current support documentation lists built-in DeX on Tab S6, S7, S8, S9, S10, S11 and S12 series, Tab A9+, Tab A11+ and other named models, but connection methods and individual features vary. The same tablet can also expose different menus after a One UI update.

  • Open Settings > About tablet and note the model name, model number and software information.
  • Install available system updates before troubleshooting a missing Taskbar or DeX option.
  • For external displays, verify video-output support for the exact model. Samsung specifically lists Galaxy Tab S9 FE and Tab S10 FE series as incompatible with HDMI output and Wireless DeX; a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter cannot add video output to those tablets.
  • Samsung identifies Classic DeX on One UI 7.1 and earlier and New DeX on tablets running One UI 8 and higher. Window behavior and entry points differ between them.

Samsung also cautions that screens and settings can vary by wireless service provider and software version. Treat the paths below as the current documented routes, then use the labels shown on your own tablet.

Samsung’s DeX support page provides the model and connection lists; its Taskbar guide and tablet DeX guide cover the relevant menus.

Set up Taskbar for quick app access on the tablet

Taskbar is the best first step when you want a phone-and-tablet interface that launches your regular apps without adding a monitor. On supported Galaxy tablets it is controlled at Settings > Display > Taskbar. Samsung says tablet Taskbar supports up to four app slots. Apps in the Home-screen Favorites bar are represented in Taskbar, so you manage the lineup from the Favorites bar rather than from a separate recent-apps picker.

Turn Taskbar on

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Display, then Taskbar.
  3. Turn on the Taskbar switch if it is off.
  4. Return to the Home screen and check that the bar appears along the edge or bottom, depending on orientation and One UI layout.

Taskbar is enabled by default on covered devices, but it may have been disabled manually or reset after a software change. The Taskbar option is not available on a Z Fold cover screen; that phone behavior should not be used as a tablet instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the four apps you actually use

  1. From the Home screen, touch and hold an app icon.
  2. Choose the option to add it to the Home-screen Favorites bar, or drag it into the Favorites area if your launcher presents that layout.
  3. Repeat for the apps you launch most during work, such as your browser, email, document editor and file manager.
  4. Remove a rarely used favorite so the limited slots remain useful.

Samsung states that changing Favorites changes the apps shown in Taskbar. The bar can launch an app, start drag-and-drop multitasking and provide access to saved app pairs. On a wide tablet, keep the four slots focused on apps you need in nearly every session rather than filling them with occasional utilities.

Use Taskbar for split-screen work

  1. Open the first app from Taskbar.
  2. Drag a second app from Taskbar toward the side or top of the screen until the split-screen placement target appears.
  3. Release it, then drag the divider to give the primary app more room.
  4. For a combination you repeat, save the arrangement as an app pair when the multitasking controls offer that command.

Do not look for tablet controls named “show recent apps,” “recent app count” or suggested-app count in Taskbar settings. Samsung documents those controls for some Z Fold phone contexts, not for Galaxy tablets.

Use standalone DeX when you need desktop-style windows

Standalone DeX runs on the tablet’s own display, so it is the practical bridge between a normal tablet interface and a small PC workstation. Samsung says the DeX interface loads on a tablet in the same way it appears on desktops and monitors, but the exact interaction depends on your One UI version.

Start DeX without a monitor

  1. Swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.
  2. Tap DeX. If the tile is not visible, edit Quick Settings and add it when the device offers the option.
  3. Wait for the DeX desktop to load on the tablet screen.

On supported software, you can change the DeX style at Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX. One UI 7.1 and earlier use Classic DeX. One UI 8 and later use New DeX; Samsung’s tablet guide describes New DeX windows opening in pop-up view and supporting up to four workspaces. Do not assume that a Classic DeX instruction or icon will appear unchanged in New DeX.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open, resize and arrange windows

In DeX, launch apps from the app list, Taskbar or Home screen. Use an app window’s title-bar controls to maximize, minimize, close or move it. Drag a window edge or corner to resize it when the app permits resizing. Some Android apps remain phone-shaped or refuse a desktop layout; that is an app limitation rather than a DeX setting.

New DeX’s workspaces are useful for separating contexts such as writing, communications and reference material. Samsung documents up to four workspaces on supported One UI 8 tablets. Keep the number of workspaces small enough that you can remember where an app lives.

Tune DeX display settings for readability and screen size

There is no universal “best” DeX resolution or font size. A 12-inch tablet viewed at arm’s length needs different scaling from a tablet connected to a large monitor across a desk. Change one setting at a time, then check text, window controls and the amount of content visible.

Font size

  1. Open Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX, or open DeX settings from the DeX desktop if that shortcut is shown.
  2. Choose Font size.
  3. Increase it if menus or title bars are difficult to read; reduce it only when the default makes workspaces feel cramped.

Display resolution

  1. In Samsung DeX settings, open Display resolution.
  2. Select a resolution offered for the current tablet or monitor.
  3. Apply the change and inspect small text, window borders and app compatibility.

A higher resolution can expose more content but make controls smaller and increase the load on some hardware. A lower resolution can improve legibility on a distant display. The available choices are device- and screen-dependent, so do not force a value that your tablet does not list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rotation and timeout

  • Set Display rotation to match the physical orientation of the tablet or monitor. A landscape setting is usually more comfortable for spreadsheets and documents; portrait can suit reading or long web pages.
  • Set Screen timeout long enough to avoid interruptions during reading or presentations, but not so long that an unattended desk stays unlocked. Use the shortest timeout that fits your work pattern.

Wallpaper and desktop organization

DeX includes wallpaper controls. A plain, high-contrast background makes window borders and icons easier to distinguish, especially on a small tablet. Keep frequently used launchers in the Taskbar and reserve the desktop for files or shortcuts you intentionally need there.

Configure keyboard, mouse, touchpad and S Pen input

Touch is adequate for short sessions, but a keyboard and pointer make DeX feel substantially more PC-like. Samsung documents USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice, touchscreen input, compatible Keyboard covers and, on Tab S7, S8, S9, S10 and S11 series, S Pen Air command in DeX.

Choose the right input combination

Input Best fit Trade-off
Touchscreen Short tablet sessions, scrolling and direct manipulation Less precise for small controls and sustained typing
S Pen Handwriting, annotation and precise taps on supported models Not a replacement for a full keyboard when entering long text
Bluetooth keyboard and mouse Portable desk setups without occupying a USB port Must be charged or supplied with batteries; pairing can be interrupted
USB keyboard and mouse Stable wired input at a desk or through a compatible hub Uses ports and may require an adapter or powered hub
Model-compatible Keyboard cover Frequent typing while keeping a tablet form factor Compatibility is model-specific and the cover adds weight and cost

Set keyboard and pointer behavior

  1. Connect the keyboard and mouse by Bluetooth, USB or a compatible Keyboard cover.
  2. Open Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX.
  3. Review the keyboard, mouse and touchpad options shown for your hardware.
  4. Adjust pointer speed, scrolling or button behavior to your preference, then test inside a window and a text field.

Samsung notes that some touchpad gestures, including two-finger pinch-to-zoom, are unsupported in tablet DeX. If a gesture fails, use the app’s on-screen zoom controls, keyboard shortcut or touchscreen instead. For a desk setup, place the pointer device at the same height as the keyboard and disable any acceleration setting that makes precise selection difficult.

Choose sound output and other desk settings

DeX can let sound come from the tablet or the connected display. In DeX settings, open the sound-output selection and choose the device that is physically closest to you. Tablet speakers suit a portable session; monitor speakers or a connected audio system make more sense when the tablet is acting as a desktop at arm’s length.

Check notifications and screen timeout before presenting or leaving the desk. A long timeout is convenient while reading, but it increases the chance that an unlocked tablet remains visible. If you use a keyboard cover, confirm that closing it does not trigger a sleep behavior that conflicts with your monitor workflow.

Use DeX with an external monitor

External-display DeX gives you more screen area than standalone DeX, but it adds compatibility and connection decisions. Samsung documents both HDMI adapter/cable connections and wireless display routes. Verify the exact tablet, adapter, monitor and software combination before buying accessories.

Wired HDMI setup

  1. Confirm that the tablet supports HDMI video output. Tab S9 FE and Tab S10 FE series do not, according to Samsung’s compatibility documentation.
  2. Connect a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable to the tablet, then connect HDMI to the monitor or television.
  3. Select the correct HDMI input on the display.
  4. Open Quick Settings and tap DeX when prompted or when the tile is available.
  5. In DeX settings, choose the offered resolution, rotation, sound output and timeout for the new screen.

Wired video is generally the more predictable choice for a desk because it avoids wireless interference and network congestion. It does require a cable and a tablet with actual video-output support; an adapter is not a workaround for an unsupported model.

Wireless DeX setup

  1. Confirm that both the tablet model and the wireless display support Samsung’s Wireless DeX route.
  2. Place the tablet close to the display and put the display in its screen-mirroring or wireless-display discovery mode.
  3. Open Quick Settings, tap DeX, and select the discovered display.
  4. Accept the connection on the display if a prompt appears.

Samsung recommends keeping the tablet and wireless display close to help avoid stutter or lag. Wireless DeX is convenient when you do not want a cable, but radio interference and distance can affect pointer response and video smoothness. If the session becomes unreliable, move the devices closer or switch to a supported wired connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the tablet screen while a monitor is connected

External-display DeX is not the same as simply mirroring the tablet. DeX provides a desktop-style workspace on the external screen, while the tablet may remain available for touch input or other supported functions. Samsung’s guidance notes that the touchscreen display itself is not compatible with DeX functionality in the cited external-display arrangement, so check the behavior your model exposes rather than assuming the tablet can always act as a second DeX monitor.

Standalone DeX versus external-display DeX

Decision Standalone DeX External-display DeX
Portability Everything runs on the tablet; no monitor or video cable required Requires a compatible monitor or television and wired or wireless connection
Available workspace Limited to the tablet’s built-in screen More physical space for windows, documents and pointer work
Best use Travel, a café table, or a quick keyboard session Long desk sessions, large documents and multi-window work
Main risk Small controls and less room for side-by-side windows Model, adapter, display and wireless-compatibility limits

Choose standalone DeX when carrying a monitor defeats the purpose of the tablet. Choose external-display DeX when your work benefits from a large fixed screen and your model has confirmed video support.

Touch and pen versus keyboard and mouse

Touch and S Pen are efficient for browsing, drawing, annotation and occasional taps. Keyboard and mouse are better for sustained writing, selecting small controls, dragging windows and using keyboard shortcuts. A hybrid setup is often most practical: leave touch available for scrolling and use a keyboard and pointer for window management and text entry.

If typing is central to your workflow, select a keyboard that is explicitly compatible with your exact Tab model. The same connector shape does not guarantee that a Keyboard cover will fit, and Bluetooth accessories can vary in layout and shortcut support. Treat S Pen support as model-specific as well; Samsung documents Air command in DeX for Tab S7, S8, S9, S10 and S11 series.

Practical PC-like layouts for common jobs

Writing and research on the tablet screen

  1. Keep your browser, document editor, file manager and notes app in the Taskbar Favorites bar.
  2. Start standalone DeX from Quick Settings.
  3. Open the document editor in a large window and place the browser beside it.
  4. Use a saved app pair if the same two apps are opened together repeatedly.
  5. Increase font size if title bars and menus are difficult to read at your normal viewing distance.

Desk work with a monitor

  1. Confirm video output and display compatibility before purchasing an adapter.
  2. Prefer HDMI for a stable permanent desk, or Wireless DeX when cable-free setup matters more than maximum consistency.
  3. Connect the keyboard and mouse before opening the main apps.
  4. Set resolution and font size for the monitor’s size and distance rather than copying a tablet setting.
  5. Route sound to the monitor or tablet according to where you sit.
  6. Use separate workspaces in New DeX when your One UI 8 tablet supports them.

Presentation or reading mode

  1. Choose the display rotation that matches the document or presentation.
  2. Set a timeout long enough to prevent the screen from sleeping during the session.
  3. Check sound output and notification visibility.
  4. Use a wired connection when a dropped wireless link would interrupt the presentation.

Troubleshoot the problems that matter most

Taskbar is missing

  • Check Settings > Display > Taskbar and turn it on.
  • Confirm that the tablet is a supported model and that the Favorites bar contains apps.
  • Restart after a major One UI update if the switch is enabled but the bar does not appear.

Expected Taskbar controls are absent

On tablets, the four-slot Favorites behavior is expected. Recent-app and suggested-app count controls described for some Z Fold phones are not tablet options. Do not treat their absence as a fault.

DeX tile or menu is missing

  • Update the tablet and recheck Quick Settings.
  • Look under Settings > Connected devices for Samsung DeX.
  • Confirm that your model is on Samsung’s supported list; not every Galaxy Tab has the same DeX capability.

Monitor shows no signal

  • Check the tablet’s exact model for HDMI support.
  • Test the display’s input and the cable or adapter with another known-compatible setup.
  • Remember that Tab S9 FE and Tab S10 FE series do not support HDMI output or Wireless DeX; replacing the adapter will not change that.

Wireless DeX stutters

  • Move the tablet closer to the display.
  • Reduce competing wireless traffic where possible.
  • Switch to a supported HDMI connection for latency-sensitive work.

Keyboard, mouse or touchpad feels wrong

  • Reconnect or re-pair the accessory and check its battery or cable.
  • Review DeX keyboard, mouse and touchpad settings.
  • Use touch or an on-screen control for gestures Samsung does not support, such as some two-finger pinch-zoom actions.

Accessory checklist before you buy

For a wired monitor, the relevant category is a USB-C to HDMI adapter for Galaxy Tab DeX, but only for a tablet whose USB-C port supports video output. For typing and pointer control, consider a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse set, a USB set with a compatible hub, or a model-specific Galaxy Tab Keyboard cover. A compatible S Pen can complement those inputs for annotation and precise selection.

  • Match the accessory to the exact tablet model, not merely the Tab family name.
  • Confirm the adapter’s connector and the monitor’s available input.
  • Check whether a hub supplies enough power if you connect several USB devices.
  • Keep the purchase optional: Taskbar and standalone DeX do not require a monitor, keyboard or mouse.

Samsung’s official instructions for Taskbar, DeX connections and settings are available at Use the Taskbar on your Galaxy tablet or Z Fold model phone, Use the Samsung DeX screen on your Galaxy phone or tablet, Use Samsung DeX on your Galaxy tablet and Access apps in Samsung DeX. Samsung’s documentation is the authority for current model compatibility, while the labels on your tablet determine the exact controls you can use.
