BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is the closest substitute for 2XKO because both use a two-character team format. Choose DRAGON BALL FighterZ if you want faster anime-style three-character tag/support battles, or Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid if cross-play and cross-progression are priorities. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is an excellent, approachable fighting game for building fundamentals, but its core combat is one-on-one rather than tag based. MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls offers a different four-versus-four design and should be treated as a future option until its current regional availability is confirmed.
This guide compares team structure, learning curve, platforms, online features and availability without promising queue times that official sources do not document.
Quick recommendations
| Game | Team format | Best reason to choose it | Platforms or availability notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle | 2v2 | Closest structural match to 2XKO; crossover roster and accessible presentation | Check the current PlayStation edition and regional store listing |
| DRAGON BALL FighterZ | 3v3 tag/support | High-speed anime action, ranked matches, training tools and party modes | PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are listed by Bandai Namco; edition and retailer availability vary |
| Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid | 3v3 tag | Officially advertised cross-play and cross-progression across console and PC platforms | Verify the exact edition and regional listing before buying |
| Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising | One-on-one core combat | Simple inputs, story and arcade modes, training features and an online lobby | PS5, PS4, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2; Switch 2 release listed for September 17, 2026 |
| MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls | 4v4 team-versus design | Shared team health and a distinct approach intended to make the whole team approachable | Official announcements point to a 2026 launch on PS5, Steam and Epic; confirm that it is available in your region |
No owner-published source reviewed for these games provides a comparable current player-count or queue-time statistic. Cross-play support can expand the potential pool, but it cannot guarantee instant matchmaking.
What 2XKO offers, and what a substitute needs to replace
2XKO is currently listed as free to play on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Riot describes two ways to play: control both champions yourself in solo play, or team up with a friend in duo play. Its defining systems are tag and assist mechanics, so a suitable alternative should let you build a team and manage character switches, assists or equivalent partner actions.

Riot’s current game page is the reference for the playable platforms and core format: 2XKO official website. Riot’s August 20, 2026 development notice says active development will end in December 2026, while servers remain online and gameplay content is scheduled to unlock in September: Riot development update. Ending active development is not an announced immediate server shutdown, so readers should distinguish the two when deciding whether to continue playing.
The alternatives below are not interchangeable. A two-character game preserves the amount of team management most closely; a three-character game adds another layer of assists and matchup planning; a one-on-one fighter can improve execution without reproducing tag play; and a four-character design can change how health, assists and responsibility are shared.
How to choose a replacement
Start with team size
- Choose a two-character format if you want the most familiar match flow and a smaller set of interactions to learn.
- Choose a three-character format if you enjoy constructing a team around assists, anchors and matchup coverage.
- Consider a four-character system only if you are willing to learn a different approach to team health and shared responsibility.
- Use a one-on-one game when your immediate goal is learning neutral, anti-airs, blocking, confirms or resource management without managing a partner.
Decide how much complexity you want
Tag games ask you to learn more than individual character moves. You also need to understand when to call an assist, how to safely bring in a partner, which character should start or finish a round, and how one character’s strengths cover another’s weaknesses. If that sounds appealing, begin with Cross Tag Battle, FighterZ or Battle for the Grid. If it sounds like too much while you are waiting for a new game, Rising’s simple inputs and dedicated training features provide a lower-pressure route into fighting games.

Store pages can show different editions, downloadable content and release dates by country. Before purchasing, open the listing for your platform, confirm that online services are still supported, and check whether the edition includes the characters or modes you expect. A publisher’s global page is useful for a feature overview, but it does not replace a local store check.
Treat online claims carefully
“Cross-play” describes the ability to connect supported platforms; it does not measure how many people are online at a particular hour. Official pages reviewed for this guide do not establish comparable populations, regional queue times or long-term activity rankings. Use a game’s cross-play announcement as a compatibility advantage, not as a guarantee of a short wait.
BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle — the closest format match
PlayStation describes BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle as a fast-paced 2v2 team fighter designed for both experienced players and newcomers. That combination makes it the clearest replacement when your priority is reproducing the amount of team management found in 2XKO rather than simply finding another anime fighting game.

- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
The crossover roster brings together characters from BlazBlue, Persona, Under Night In-Birth and RWBY. The different series give the game a broad visual identity and let you choose teams around distinct character archetypes. A crossover roster can also make the first hours less predictable: you are learning how characters from several universes interact rather than staying inside one franchise’s design language.
Why it fits a 2XKO player
- The two-character team size keeps the number of active decisions comparatively contained.
- Fast matches make it practical to test assists, swaps and team order repeatedly.
- The publisher positioning explicitly includes newcomers, so it is a reasonable starting point if you have not played a tag fighter recently.
Do not assume that every tag rule, assist property or combo route works exactly like 2XKO. The official description establishes the team size and accessibility, not one-to-one system equivalence. Treat your first sessions as learning a related format, not transferring a complete 2XKO playbook.
See the current PlayStation information for platform and edition details: BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle on PlayStation.
DRAGON BALL FighterZ — the high-speed three-character choice
Bandai Namco explicitly presents DRAGON BALL FighterZ as “easy to learn but difficult to master” and identifies its central feature as “3vs3 Tag/Support.” That makes it the strongest recommendation when you want anime presentation and a larger team-building puzzle than 2XKO’s two-character structure.
The game includes ranked matches, an interactive lobby and six-player Party Match. Those modes support different goals: ranked play for a competitive ladder, the lobby for social interaction and practice, and Party Match for a larger group format. Its visual style draws directly on Dragon Ball, with dramatic supers and recognizable characters, so it is particularly suited to players who value franchise spectacle as much as system similarity.

Bandai Namco’s official page lists PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The same page displays physical and digital edition options, but the exact stock, upgrade path and downloadable content depend on your platform, region and retailer. Confirm those details on the store you will use rather than assuming that every edition is interchangeable.

- Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
- Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
- Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
- Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.
Who should pick it
- Players who want three-character tag/support battles and are comfortable planning a deeper roster.
- Anime fans who want a presentation built around dramatic attacks and recognizable source material.
- Players who want ranked, lobby and party formats in one package.
It is not a two-character game, so a team that feels manageable in 2XKO can require more matchup knowledge here. Start with a simple team plan—one character for learning neutral, one for assists and one for closing rounds—then expand once you understand how your chosen characters share resources.
Feature, platform and edition information is available from Bandai Namco’s DRAGON BALL FighterZ page.
Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid — the cross-platform team option
The official Nintendo listing describes 3v3 tag battles using traditional fighting-game controls. The developer’s site advertises cross-play and cross-progression across four console platforms and PC. Together, those claims make Battle for the Grid a practical choice for households where players use different systems or where you want progress to follow you between supported platforms.
What cross-progression changes
Cross-play addresses who you can match against; cross-progression addresses what account progress can carry between platforms. They solve different problems, so check the developer’s current terms for the exact consoles, account requirements and content covered. A platform listed on a store page is not automatically included in every cross-progression feature.
Why it is not a guaranteed matchmaking solution
Neither the Nintendo listing nor the developer site publishes a current population figure or regional queue-time measurement. Cross-play can combine compatible platforms, but it cannot prove that a match will be available at your preferred hour. If online play is your main reason for buying, verify the current service status and edition before checkout.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising — an accessible adjacent choice
Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is not a tag-team substitute: its core combat is one-on-one. It belongs on this list because many 2XKO players are also looking for a welcoming way to practice fighting-game fundamentals while deciding what to play next.
Cygames lists simple inputs, story and arcade modes, training tools and an online lobby. Those features let you work on spacing, anti-airs, punishment and confirms without simultaneously managing a partner. The game labels its genres “Fighting, Party,” but that label should not be read as evidence of a tag system.
Current platform timeline
The original platform release was December 14, 2023. Cygames lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Steam, and gives Nintendo Switch 2 a release date of September 17, 2026. Because platform support and downloadable content can differ by territory, check the current regional store page before purchasing.
When it is the right recommendation
- You want simple controls and structured tutorials before returning to team play.
- You prefer story or arcade content alongside online matches.
- You want training tools that isolate fundamentals instead of learning several characters at once.
Once your execution and defensive habits improve, moving back to a tag fighter is easier because you can focus on assists and swaps rather than relearning basic movement.
See the current feature and platform information at Cygames’ Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising site.

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls should not be presented as a drop-in 2XKO replacement. PlayStation’s June 2025 announcement describes a four-versus-four team design developed by PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games. A later PlayStation feature reports that the game uses a shared team health bar, changing how players think about individual survival and team contribution.

That shared-health approach can lower the pressure to master every member of a team before you can contribute effectively. It also changes strategic priorities: protecting the team’s shared resource, coordinating attacks and understanding the roles of the other characters may matter as much as preserving one specific fighter.
“From the beginning, we aimed to make MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls a title that could be enjoyed by a wide variety of players,”
That is a statement from game director and lead battle designer Kazuto Sekine in PlayStation’s June 4, 2025 interview. The official pages establish a 2026 launch window on PS5, Steam and Epic, but a current region-specific store listing was not established here. Confirm that the game is actually available in your territory before treating it as an immediately playable purchase.

A practical decision path
- Choose Cross Tag Battle if preserving a two-character team structure is your first requirement.
- Choose FighterZ if you want the most elaborate anime-style tag/support package and do not mind adding a third character.
- Choose Battle for the Grid if cross-play and cross-progression are more important than matching 2XKO’s exact format.
- Choose Rising if your priority is improving fighting fundamentals with simple inputs and robust training options.
- Wait for confirmed regional availability of Tōkon if a shared-health, four-character design appeals to you more than conventional tag rules.
Buying and setup checklist
- Confirm the current platform listing in your country, including whether you are buying a base game, upgrade or bundle.
- Check which characters, stages and modes are included in the edition you selected.
- Verify that online services and required platform subscriptions are available for your system.
- If playing with friends, make sure everyone is on a compatible version and understands whether cross-play requires account linking.
- Use training mode first: map movement, blocking, anti-airs, assists and safe character changes before entering ranked play.
- Do not buy a specialty fight stick solely because a game is a tag fighter. The available sources do not establish that one controller type is required or inherently superior.
About fighting-game collections
Capcom’s official announcement says all eight games in Capcom Fighting Collection 2 include online play with rollback netcode. That is useful context if you are considering a classic-fighter collection for online play, but it does not establish the same features for the separate Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection or for every game included in it. Keep the two collections distinct when checking features.
