Squad is the closest all-round alternative to WARDOGS if you want 100-player modern warfare, vehicles, logistics, fortifications and constant voice coordination. Choose Arma Reforger for deeper simulation and modding, Hell Let Loose for historical 100-player combined-arms battles, or Insurgency: Sandstorm for smaller, faster and more lethal infantry fights.

Why these games feel like WARDOGS

WARDOGS is an Early Access tactical all-out-warfare FPS released on September 10, 2026. Its defining match is a 100-player battle split among three teams. Players fight over randomized 2×2 km Control Zones placed inside larger maps, while combining gunplay with vehicles, logistics, construction, destruction, progression and proximity voice chat.

The game’s economy is unusual for the genre. You can earn cash by reviving squadmates, transporting friendly players or controlling the objective. That money persists between matches, giving decisions outside a firefight a longer-term consequence. The developer’s slogan, “Every. Decision. Matters.”, describes that design goal accurately.

Because WARDOGS is still evolving, its current Steam listing describes a fully playable game with more maps, weapons, vehicles, progression systems, objective variations and balance or stability work planned during an estimated one-to-two-year Early Access period. The alternatives below therefore match the parts of WARDOGS that are already documented rather than promising identical systems.

What to look for in a WARDOGS alternative

There is no single substitute for every WARDOGS feature. Its identity comes from several systems operating at once: a large player count, three competing teams, a contested zone, vehicles, construction, destruction, logistics, progression and voice communication that changes with physical distance. Before choosing another shooter, decide which of those elements matters most.

If the priority is a modern battlefield with organized squads, vehicles and supply work, Squad is the closest fit. If the priority is realistic weapons, open terrain and the ability to create or modify scenarios, Arma Reforger moves further toward simulation. If the attraction is the spectacle of a 100-player operation with armor and artillery, Hell Let Loose supplies that scale in a World War II setting. If the real draw is immediate, punishing infantry combat, Insurgency: Sandstorm removes most of the large-operation overhead.

That distinction matters because a game can resemble WARDOGS in one dimension while feeling very different in practice. A historical shooter may match the player count but not the modern arsenal. A realistic sandbox may offer more freedom but less predictable match pacing. A compact infantry game may reproduce the tension of a close firefight without reproducing the logistics or vehicle layer.

Squad Modern combined-arms teamwork 100-player battles, vehicles, logistics, fortifications, tactical communication and organized objectives More formal squad and commander structure; no documented persistent cash economy 50-versus-50 battles with nine-person squads
Arma Reforger Realism, sandbox play and modding Combined arms, realistic weapons, large terrain and tactical objectives Cold War setting, more simulation-heavy systems and flexible mission length Conflict sessions can last an hour or days; Game Master supports live mission creation
Hell Let Loose Historical large-scale warfare 100-player coordination, infantry and vehicle teamwork, artillery and objective pressure World War II equipment and a resource-driven frontline instead of modern weapons and persistent cash Dynamic frontline with an RTS-inspired resource meta-game
Insurgency: Sandstorm Lethal close-quarters infantry combat Modern weapons, tactical teamwork, communication and high consequences for mistakes Much smaller infantry-focused engagements with little emphasis on vehicles, construction or huge maps Best fit when intensity matters more than player count

1. Squad is the closest modern all-round match

Pick Squad first if what you want after WARDOGS is the same broad fantasy: a modern battlefield where individual shooting skill matters, but the team’s logistics, communication and vehicle coordination decide the result. Its official listing describes a tactical FPS positioned between arcade shooting and military realism, with 100-player battles, combined-arms warfare, base building, logistics and detailed in-game VoIP.

What transfers from WARDOGS

  • Comparable scale: Squad’s headline format is 50 versus 50, matching WARDOGS’s 100-player ambition.
  • Structured teamwork: Squads contain up to nine players, giving a team a clear local unit for movement, defense and support.
  • Vehicles and supply: Transport, combat vehicles and logistics are part of the battle rather than optional side activities.
  • Fortifications: Teams can construct defenses and use supply systems to maintain positions.
  • Layered voice communication: Squad’s VoIP supports coordination within a squad and across the wider team, while WARDOGS emphasizes proximity voice chat.

Where Squad differs

Squad has a more formal command hierarchy and a mature ruleset. You generally enter a match with established squad roles, commander-led objectives and a known logistics structure. WARDOGS instead highlights three-way Control Zones, randomized objective locations, destruction and cash that persists between matches. No equivalent persistent cash economy is documented for Squad in the cited product description.

The objective experience is therefore different even when both games are busy and team-oriented. In WARDOGS, the randomized Control Zone and three-team arrangement can make the direction of pressure less predictable. In Squad, the emphasis is on fitting into a squad, following a commander-led plan and keeping the team supplied. Players who enjoy being useful away from the front should find the transition natural, but players seeking WARDOGS’s individual wallet and rewards should not expect the same loop.

Who should choose it

Choose Squad if you want modern weapons and vehicles on a 100-player battlefield, but prefer a game whose communication and responsibilities are explicitly organized. It is also the safest recommendation for groups that enjoy assigning roles—infantry, vehicle crew, logistics or squad leadership—rather than improvising every operation.

A headset with a working microphone is a practical requirement, not an optional luxury. Squad explicitly lists a microphone in its recommended requirements, and both games rely on spoken coordination to turn information about enemy movement, supplies and objectives into action.

2. Arma Reforger is the realism and sandbox choice

Arma Reforger is the best alternative when WARDOGS’s military framing appeals to you but you want the simulation side pushed further. It uses a Cold War setting and emphasizes realistic weapons, gameplay systems, expansive terrain, multiplayer, co-op, single-player options and extensive Workshop modding.

Why it suits WARDOGS players

  • Authentic battlefield systems: Weapons and movement are designed around simulation rather than purely accessible arcade handling.
  • Large, open terrain: Operations can involve navigation, reconnaissance, transport and engagements that are far apart.
  • Emergent objectives: Conflict provides a persistent-feeling campaign structure, while missions can develop in unexpected ways as players capture territory and respond to threats.
  • Workshop support: Community-made content expands scenarios and rules beyond the base experience.
  • Game Master: A player can create and curate missions in real time, changing the experience from a fixed match into a live sandbox.

How its pace compares

Arma Reforger is less about quickly resetting after a failed push. Its Conflict mode can run for an hour or for days, depending on the server and the course of the operation. That flexibility is the attraction for players who enjoy planning, map-and-compass navigation, logistics and long-form emergent stories; it can feel slower and less immediately readable than a Control Zone match.

  • Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.

The open-ended structure also changes how a group prepares. Instead of assuming every session has the same boundaries, players may need to agree on a scenario, server or role before the operation begins. Game Master gives a human player the ability to shape events in real time, so the experience can become a curated mission rather than a fixed contest. Workshop content further broadens that range, but it also means the exact experience depends more heavily on the selected community scenario.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should choose it

Pick Arma Reforger if realism, modding and freedom to create scenarios matter more than a standardized match loop. It is the strongest choice for players who want to alter the rules, explore a Cold War sandbox or let a human Game Master shape events in real time. It is not the direct choice for someone seeking WARDOGS’s modern setting, three-team structure or persistent cash progression.

3. Hell Let Loose is the historical large-scale equivalent

Hell Let Loose preserves the sense of scale and coordination while moving the action to World War II. Its battles support 100 players and combine infantry, tanks and artillery around a dynamically shifting frontline. The game also adds an RTS-inspired resource system that influences the wider battle.

What feels familiar

  • 100-player warfare: The battlefield is large enough for local firefights to connect to a broader team operation.
  • Combined arms: Infantry must work with tanks and artillery instead of treating vehicles as background scenery.
  • Objective pressure: Capturing and holding territory changes the frontline and determines where the next engagements occur.
  • Specialized teamwork: Success depends on players filling different battlefield functions and communicating their needs.

What changes from WARDOGS

The setting and equipment are the major differences. Hell Let Loose is built around historical World War II forces, so its weapons, vehicles and battlefield assumptions do not provide WARDOGS’s modern tactical sandbox. Its strategic layer is a resource-based frontline meta-game rather than randomized 2×2 km Control Zones with cash that persists between matches.

The frontline model also creates a different sense of progress. Instead of several teams competing over a randomized zone in a contemporary environment, the battle’s pressure moves across territory as objectives change hands. Tanks and artillery are central to the combined-arms picture, but they serve a historical operational structure rather than WARDOGS’s modern construction, destruction and economy combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should choose it

Choose Hell Let Loose when you want the spectacle of a 100-player operation, clear frontline momentum and coordination between infantry, armor and artillery. It is less suitable if your priority is contemporary weapons, construction and destruction in a modern setting or an individual progression wallet.

4. Insurgency: Sandstorm is the smaller, infantry-first option

Insurgency: Sandstorm is the answer to “What is like WARDOGS but smaller and more infantry focused?” Its official description centers on lethal close-quarters combat, high consequences for every bullet and movement, and teamwork as the path to survival.

Why the gunfights appeal

  • Modern setting: It keeps the contemporary weapon context that WARDOGS players may prefer over historical equipment.
  • Immediate lethality: Mistakes are punished quickly, so positioning, sound awareness and controlled movement matter.
  • Compact engagements: Fights develop at closer range and resolve faster than a large combined-arms operation.
  • Team dependence: Communication and coordinated movement remain more valuable than charging alone.

What you give up

Insurgency: Sandstorm is primarily an infantry shooter. It does not target WARDOGS’s 100-player scale, vehicles, logistics, construction, destruction or persistent cash. There is also no equivalent three-team Control Zone structure described in its official overview.

That narrower scope is an advantage when a group wants to spend more of a session making contact and less time organizing transport, supplies or defenses. It is a poor substitute if the appeal of WARDOGS is the way non-combat jobs generate cash, vehicles connect distant parts of the map or construction changes the objective area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should choose it

Choose Insurgency: Sandstorm when you want modern tactical gunplay without managing a huge map or a combined-arms operation. It is especially appropriate for a small group that wants intense rounds, clear weapon consequences and less downtime between firefights.

How the four alternatives compare on the features that matter

Battle scale

WARDOGS, Squad and Hell Let Loose all advertise 100-player battles. Arma Reforger is more flexible: its identity comes from sandbox modes and server-created scenarios rather than one headline player count. Insurgency: Sandstorm belongs on the smaller infantry branch of the comparison.

Player count alone does not determine the feel of a battle. Squad’s 50-versus-50 structure is divided into nine-person squads, so the effective unit for most decisions is much smaller than the headline number. Hell Let Loose’s 100-player design is experienced through a frontline and specialized battlefield functions. WARDOGS adds a three-team contest and randomized Control Zones, which can make local positioning especially important. Arma Reforger trades a single advertised format for server and scenario flexibility.

Realism and accessibility

Arma Reforger is the most simulation-forward option, with realistic systems and longer operations. Squad occupies the middle ground between arcade shooting and military realism. WARDOGS describes realistic gunplay balanced for gameplay, while Insurgency emphasizes lethal handling and high consequences. Hell Let Loose applies realism through historical equipment, roles and frontline systems.

In practical terms, Squad is the easiest recommendation for someone who wants military structure without committing to an operation that can last days. Arma Reforger asks for more patience and curiosity. Hell Let Loose asks players to accept a historical ruleset. Insurgency: Sandstorm is mechanically direct, but its lethal gunfights leave little room for careless movement.

Combined arms

Vehicles or combined-arms play are central to WARDOGS, Squad, Arma Reforger and Hell Let Loose. Insurgency: Sandstorm is mainly infantry focused, so it is the deliberate outlier rather than a like-for-like substitute for vehicle warfare.

WARDOGS combines vehicles with logistics, construction and destruction inside a modern three-team objective battle. Squad makes transport, combat vehicles, fortifications and supply systems part of its organized team structure. Arma Reforger places combined arms in an open Cold War sandbox. Hell Let Loose connects infantry, tanks and artillery to a moving World War II frontline. Those are four distinct ways to make vehicles matter, not interchangeable implementations.

Objectives and progression

WARDOGS uses randomized Control Zones and cash that remains between matches. Squad uses commander-led objectives supported by squads and logistics. Hell Let Loose moves a frontline through territory while its resource meta-game affects the wider battle. Arma Reforger offers Conflict, Game Master and other flexible modes. Insurgency: Sandstorm concentrates on tactical firefights rather than a large persistent economy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The persistent-cash distinction is important for players who like their support actions to have a lasting payoff. WARDOGS specifically rewards reviving squadmates, transporting friendlies and controlling the objective, then carries the money into later matches. The other descriptions emphasize battlefield outcomes, resources, scenarios or firefight survival instead; they do not document the same cross-match wallet.

Communication

All four recommendations reward communication, but they structure it differently. WARDOGS highlights proximity voice chat, which makes distance and local awareness part of the interaction. Squad provides layered VoIP for squad and team coordination. Arma Reforger supports communication inside a more open-ended sandbox. Hell Let Loose uses teamwork across a frontline, while Insurgency: Sandstorm keeps communication focused on immediate infantry survival.

Voice is not merely social decoration in these games. A useful call identifies where an enemy is, which direction it is moving, what kind of threat it represents and what action teammates should take. In a logistics-heavy match, that may mean a supply request or vehicle status. In a close-quarters round, it may be a brief warning about a doorway or flank. The more structured the game, the more valuable it is to keep calls concise and role-specific.

Which game matches each WARDOGS feature?

WARDOGS feature Closest match Reason
100-player modern warfare Squad It combines 50-versus-50 battles with contemporary weapons, vehicles and formal team communication.
Realism and open-ended operations Arma Reforger Its Cold War sandbox, realistic systems, Workshop and Game Master support favor simulation and experimentation.
Large infantry, armor and artillery battles Hell Let Loose Its 100-player World War II battles use a shifting frontline and resource-driven strategic layer.
Modern lethal firefights Insurgency: Sandstorm It focuses on close-quarters infantry combat where every bullet and movement carries high consequences.
Persistent cash from support actions WARDOGS itself The listed alternatives do not document the same rewards for revives, transport and objective control carrying between matches.
Three-team randomized Control Zones WARDOGS itself No listed alternative documents that exact combination of three teams, randomized zones and 2×2 km objective areas.

Choose the right game in one decision

  1. Want the closest modern, 100-player replacement? Start with Squad.
  2. Want the deepest realism, modding and freedom to run your own operation? Choose Arma Reforger.
  3. Want 100-player warfare but prefer World War II history? Choose Hell Let Loose.
  4. Want modern weapons and lethal fights with less scale? Choose Insurgency: Sandstorm.
  5. Want WARDOGS’s specific economy and three-team Control Zones? Stay with WARDOGS; none of these descriptions documents the same combination of randomized objectives, persistent cash and three opposing teams.

Buying and setup considerations

Storefront prices, review totals and feature availability can change, so check the current listing for each game before buying. Search for Squad on Steam, Arma Reforger on Steam, Hell Let Loose on Steam and Insurgency: Sandstorm on Steam to confirm the current price, edition and system requirements rather than relying on an old figure.

There is no single hardware or input requirement that applies equally to all four games in the descriptions above. The most concrete shared preparation is communication: a headset with a microphone is a sensible purchase for any group planning coordinated play. Squad explicitly includes a microphone in its recommended requirements, while WARDOGS makes proximity voice chat a named feature.

Players should also set expectations about time. A Squad round is organized around squads, objectives and logistics. Arma Reforger’s Conflict can last from an hour to days. Hell Let Loose is built around a full-frontline operation. Insurgency: Sandstorm is the better fit when a group wants more compact engagements. Choosing the game whose session rhythm matches your available time prevents a technically similar title from feeling wrong.

Set up communication before your first match

Voice coordination is a shared requirement across the closest alternatives, so prepare it before joining a serious server or match.

  1. Connect a headset with a microphone and select it as the operating system’s input and output device.
  2. In the game’s audio settings, verify that your microphone registers speech and that voice output is routed to the headset.
  3. Use push-to-talk if open microphones create noise; bind the key where it is reachable without releasing movement controls.
  4. Tell teammates what they need to act on: location, direction, enemy type, distance, vehicle status or supply request.
  5. Keep nonessential chatter out of objective calls so squad leaders and vehicle crews can hear time-sensitive information.

This setup is particularly important in Squad, whose recommended requirements explicitly include a microphone, and in WARDOGS, where proximity voice chat makes local communication part of battlefield awareness.

Common mistakes when choosing a WARDOGS alternative

  • Choosing by player count alone: A 100-player label does not tell you whether the game is modern, historical, squad-structured or sandbox-driven.
  • Expecting persistent cash everywhere: WARDOGS’s rewards for revives, transport and objective control are a distinctive documented feature, not a standard promise across the alternatives.
  • Assuming every vehicle game has the same logistics: Squad, Arma Reforger and Hell Let Loose all use combined arms, but their objectives and battlefield structures differ.
  • Ignoring communication: A microphone and clear voice calls are central to coordinated play, especially in Squad and WARDOGS.
  • Underestimating session length: Arma Reforger can run from an hour to days, while Insurgency: Sandstorm is aimed at more compact infantry engagements.
  • Expecting modern weapons from a historical game: Hell Let Loose matches scale and coordination, but its World War II setting changes the equipment and tactical assumptions.

Frequently asked questions

Is Squad the closest game to WARDOGS?

Yes, for the broad modern combined-arms experience. Both point toward large battles, vehicles, logistics, fortifications and voice-led teamwork. Squad is more formally organized around 50-versus-50 battles, nine-person squads and commander-led objectives, while WARDOGS adds three teams, randomized 2×2 km Control Zones, destruction and persistent cash.

What is the most realistic alternative to WARDOGS?

Arma Reforger is the strongest choice for realism. Its Cold War setting, realistic weapons and gameplay systems, expansive terrain, Workshop modding and Game Master tools push it further toward simulation and sandbox play. Its Conflict mode can last an hour or days, so expect a less bounded rhythm than WARDOGS.

Which tactical shooter is like WARDOGS but smaller and more infantry focused?

Insurgency: Sandstorm. It keeps a modern setting, tactical teamwork and high consequences for mistakes, but focuses on lethal close-quarters infantry combat instead of 100-player combined-arms maps, vehicles, construction, destruction and persistent cash.

Which alternative has 100-player battles?

Squad and Hell Let Loose explicitly advertise 100-player battles, as does WARDOGS. Squad uses 50-versus-50 teams and nine-person squads. Hell Let Loose uses a 100-player World War II battlefield with infantry, tanks, artillery and a moving frontline. Arma Reforger emphasizes flexible sandbox sessions rather than one headline player count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which game is best for vehicles and teamwork?

Squad is the clearest modern recommendation because it combines vehicles, logistics, base building, fortifications and detailed VoIP in a 100-player structure. Arma Reforger and Hell Let Loose are also strong combined-arms choices, but they differ in setting and mode structure. Insurgency: Sandstorm is primarily infantry focused.

Do any of these games copy WARDOGS’s persistent cash economy?

Not in the documented descriptions. WARDOGS lets players earn cash by reviving squadmates, transporting friendlies or controlling the objective, and that money persists between matches. Squad, Arma Reforger, Hell Let Loose and Insurgency: Sandstorm emphasize different objective, resource, sandbox or firefight systems rather than the same cross-match wallet.

Do I need a microphone?

A microphone is strongly recommended for coordinated play. Squad explicitly lists one in its recommended requirements, and WARDOGS uses proximity voice chat. Hell Let Loose, Arma Reforger and Insurgency: Sandstorm also reward timely team communication, even though their communication structures differ.

Which game should I choose for historical warfare?

Choose Hell Let Loose. It offers 100-player World War II battles with infantry, tanks, artillery, a dynamically shifting frontline and an RTS-inspired resource meta-game. It is not a modern-equipment replacement for WARDOGS, but it is the closest historical large-scale equivalent among these recommendations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much do these games cost?

Prices and editions change, so verify the current Steam listing for each title before purchase. The important buying distinction here is less about a fixed price and more about choosing the right scope: a structured 100-player game, a long-form sandbox, a historical frontline or a compact infantry shooter.

Bottom line: which tactical shooter should you play?

Squad is the strongest first recommendation because it overlaps WARDOGS on modern setting, 100-player scale, vehicles, logistics, fortifications and voice-led teamwork. Arma Reforger is better for players who value simulation, modding and operations that can last far beyond a conventional round. Hell Let Loose delivers the closest historical equivalent to a large combined-arms battle, with infantry, tanks, artillery and a moving frontline. Insurgency: Sandstorm is the focused alternative when you want modern, punishing infantry combat and do not need vehicles or a massive map.

No alternative reproduces every WARDOGS feature at once. If randomized three-team Control Zones, destructible modern battlefields, proximity chat and persistent cash are the combination you want, WARDOGS remains the specific destination. If one part of that formula matters most, the four choices above let you prioritize scale, realism, history or infantry intensity without pretending those priorities are identical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Squad the closest game to WARDOGS?

Yes, for modern 100-player combined-arms teamwork. Squad adds more formal squad and commander structure, while WARDOGS distinguishes itself with three teams, randomized Control Zones, destruction and persistent cash.

What is the most realistic WARDOGS alternative?

Arma Reforger, thanks to its Cold War setting, realistic systems, expansive terrain, Workshop modding and Game Master mission creation.

Which alternatives have 100-player battles?

Squad and Hell Let Loose explicitly advertise 100-player battles, as does WARDOGS. Arma Reforger uses flexible sandbox sessions, and Insurgency: Sandstorm is the smaller infantry option.

Do any of these games have WARDOGS’s persistent cash system?

No documented alternative uses the same system. WARDOGS carries earnings from revives, transport and objective control between matches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a microphone to play?

A microphone is strongly recommended. Squad lists one in its recommended requirements, and WARDOGS makes proximity voice chat a central feature.

The Bottom Line

Squad is the best first choice after WARDOGS for modern 100-player teamwork, vehicles, logistics and fortifications. Pick Arma Reforger for realism and modding, Hell Let Loose for historical combined-arms warfare, or Insurgency: Sandstorm for compact, lethal infantry combat.
