For the smoothest Cronos: The New Dawn experience on Nintendo Switch 2, plan around a stable 30 FPS rather than 60 FPS, use your television’s Game Mode when docked, keep handheld and docked sessions separate, and avoid changing modes until the reported crash issue is fixed. The port uses visual compromises to protect frame-rate stability, and no user-selectable Performance or Quality mode has been documented for Switch 2.
The best Switch 2 settings for smooth Cronos gameplay
Cronos: The New Dawn on Nintendo Switch 2 is designed as a 30 FPS experience. Reports describe the frame rate as mostly solid, with occasional struggles during hectic encounters. That means “smooth” on this version means consistent frame pacing around 30 frames per second, not a selectable 60 FPS mode.
| What to set | Recommended choice | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Frame-rate target | Expect 30 FPS | The available Switch 2 coverage reports 30 FPS in both docked and handheld play. |
| Television picture mode | Game Mode | Reduces extra display processing and input latency. |
| HDMI connection | Stable, direct HDMI input | Avoids unnecessary switching, receivers or processing layers that can add delay. |
| Session mode | Stay handheld or stay docked | Switching from handheld to docked has been reported to hard-crash the game. |
| Graphics preset | No documented user selector | The Switch 2 evidence does not establish a Performance, Quality or 60 FPS option. |
| Resolution target | Do not assume a number | No verified numeric resolution target is published in the available material. |
These are operating choices rather than hidden console tweaks. Nintendo’s listing confirms handheld, tabletop and TV modes, while coverage of the port describes the same 30 FPS behavior in docked and handheld play. The most important decision is therefore how you connect and display the game, not which fictional graphics preset you select.

A 30 FPS game presents a new frame roughly every 33.3 milliseconds. A well-paced 30 FPS presentation can feel consistent even when it is not as fluid as 60 FPS. Cronos is a slow, deliberate survival-horror game built around searching rooms, managing scarce supplies and reacting to dangerous creatures, so stable pacing is more useful than an unsupported promise of a higher frame rate.

Nintendo Life described the Switch 2 version as “a pretty solid 30fps which occasionally struggles during more hectic encounters.” Nintendo Connect also reports 30 FPS in both docked and handheld modes. Those statements establish a practical expectation: most exploration should stay near the target, while scenes with several enemies, effects or rapid combat activity may show dips.
Do not interpret an occasional slowdown as evidence that your television is misconfigured. The game itself may be under heavier load in those moments. Display settings can remove avoidable latency, but they cannot turn this port into a 60 FPS release.
Before changing anything: confirm the platform and version
This guide concerns the Nintendo Switch 2 release, not the original Nintendo Switch edition or another console version. Nintendo’s official listing identifies the game as a Switch 2 title with handheld, tabletop and TV modes. Bandai Namco announced the release for 5 September 2025 and stated that a physical Standard Edition was available for Switch 2 through major retailers in EMEA and Australia.
Check the version shown on the HOME menu before troubleshooting. Highlight Cronos, press the plus button, and open Software Update followed by Via the Internet. The currently verified material does not establish a current Switch 2 patch number or confirm that a later update fixed the handheld-to-docked crash. If your console reports an update, install it before testing; if it is already current, record the displayed version when reporting a problem.
Docked settings for the lowest practical latency
Docked play gives you a larger image and lets the television control the final display pipeline. It does not provide a different frame-rate target: the available reporting still places the game at 30 FPS. Use the following setup once, then leave the console docked for the entire session.
1. Enable Game Mode on the television
Open the television’s picture settings and select the mode named Game, Game Mode or an equivalent low-latency preset. Manufacturers use different labels, so the exact menu path varies. This mode normally disables or reduces motion interpolation, noise reduction, artificial sharpening and other processing that can delay controller input.

Do not enable motion smoothing to make a 30 FPS game appear faster. Interpolated frames are generated by the television, not by Cronos, and can introduce image artifacts or additional delay during camera movement and combat. If your TV offers separate options for motion clarity, black-frame insertion or cinematic processing, leave them off while diagnosing responsiveness.

2. Use a dependable HDMI path
Connect the Switch 2 dock to a known-good HDMI input. If possible, connect directly to the television instead of routing the signal through an AV receiver, capture device or HDMI switch. Those devices can be perfectly usable, but each additional component creates another place for handshake or latency problems to occur.
Select the same HDMI input before launching the game and avoid changing inputs during a session. If the television has an input icon or label, rename it to a console or game input only if that action does not force a high-latency picture preset. The key requirement is a stable signal, not a particular marketing label on the port.
3. Keep the television’s scaling simple
Use the TV’s standard aspect-ratio or screen-size setting unless the image is visibly cropped. Disable overscan if your television provides that control. Do not claim a sharper result by forcing an unverified resolution setting; no numeric Switch 2 resolution target is established in the available coverage.
4. Place the dock for reliable cooling and power
Set the dock on a hard, open surface with its ventilation area unobstructed. Use the official power connection and avoid repeatedly unplugging the dock while the game is running. These are general console reliability precautions, not a hidden Cronos performance setting, but they remove avoidable interruptions during long sessions.

Handheld mode uses the built-in Switch 2 screen and avoids the television’s processing chain. It is also reported at 30 FPS, so the benefit is convenience and a direct display path rather than a faster mode.

1. Start and finish in handheld mode
Launch Cronos while the console is being used as a handheld and keep it there. Nintendo Life reported that moving from handheld to docked can hard-crash the game and recommended sticking with one mode until the issue is fixed. A crash can lose unsaved progress, so do not treat a mid-session mode change as a harmless convenience.
2. Set a comfortable screen and brightness level
Choose a brightness level that preserves dark-room detail without washing out shadows. Cronos relies on low-light environments, so the best setting is the lowest level at which you can distinguish doors, interactable objects and enemy movement comfortably. Automatic brightness can be convenient, but a fixed level is easier to keep consistent during a long horror session.
Keep the screen clean and position it far enough from your face to avoid glare. These choices do not change frame rate, but they reduce the temptation to raise brightness or move closer when a scene becomes dark.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Use headphones when possible
Headphones can make directional audio easier to follow in handheld mode and prevent you from raising the console’s speakers in a noisy room. They are a comfort and awareness improvement, not a performance upgrade. If you connect or disconnect an audio device, do it before starting a session where possible so that you do not combine several changes while diagnosing a crash or input problem.
Should you play Cronos docked or handheld?
Choose the mode that suits your display, posture and session length. Both modes are reported at 30 FPS, so this is not a 30-versus-60 decision.
| Factor | Docked | Handheld |
|---|---|---|
| Frame-rate expectation | 30 FPS target, with possible struggles in hectic encounters | 30 FPS target, with possible struggles in hectic encounters |
| Display size and distance | Larger screen and greater viewing distance; useful for reading environmental detail from a sofa | Smaller screen held close; easier to position precisely but may feel cramped during long sessions |
| Input latency | Depends on the television and its processing; Game Mode and a direct HDMI path help | No television processing chain; controller input goes to the built-in display |
| Long-session comfort | Can be easier on the neck and eyes with a properly positioned screen and chair | Portable and private, but holding the console for hours can tire your hands |
| Mode-switch risk | Do not switch into or out of docked play while the game is running | Do not switch to docked during the session because a hard crash has been reported |
| Best use case | Players who want a large image and can enable low-latency TV settings | Players who want a direct screen, flexible location or headphone-based play |
If your television has noticeable input delay even in Game Mode, handheld may feel more responsive. If small text or dark scenes are difficult to read on the built-in screen, docked play may be more comfortable after the TV is configured correctly. Neither choice changes the game’s fundamental 30 FPS behavior.

Does Cronos on Switch 2 have a Performance mode?
No user-selectable Performance or Quality mode has been documented for the Switch 2 version in the available official listing and technical coverage. Do not expect a menu option that trades image quality for 60 FPS, and do not describe the game as having a guaranteed resolution setting.
The port’s strategy is instead to make visual compromises so the 30 FPS target remains as stable as possible. Nintendo Life specifically notes visual cutbacks made to preserve frame-rate stability. Those compromises may appear as less detailed scenery, simpler effects or other reductions compared with versions on more powerful hardware, but the available sources do not provide a complete technical breakdown or a numeric resolution measurement.
If you do not see a Performance toggle in the game’s menus, that is consistent with the documented Switch 2 feature set. Changing the TV’s picture mode cannot create such a toggle; it only changes how the already-rendered image is processed.
Why hectic encounters may still slow down
Cronos combines third-person movement, lighting, effects and enemies that can merge with fallen creatures. Bandai Namco describes the game as a survival-horror adventure in which ammunition and supplies are limited, temporal anomalies connect a post-apocalyptic future with 1980s-era Poland, and creatures you kill can return through a process called “Merging.” Those systems can make combat scenes more demanding than quiet exploration.
When a fight becomes busy, pause briefly before assuming a configuration failure. Check whether the slowdown is limited to the encounter, whether controller input still registers, and whether the display is applying motion processing. If the game returns to its usual cadence after the scene, the behavior matches the reported occasional struggles during hectic encounters.

- Keep Game Mode enabled when docked.
- Remove unnecessary HDMI devices from the signal path.
- Do not switch between handheld and docked during the game.
- Install any available software update before repeating the same encounter.
- Do not promise that a lower television resolution, a different cable label or a hidden console option will produce 60 FPS; the evidence does not support that conclusion.
Preventing and recovering from the handheld-to-docked crash
The most specific reported stability issue is a hard crash when changing from handheld to docked. Until an official update is confirmed, treat the mode as fixed for each play session.

Before launching
- Decide whether the session will be handheld or docked.
- If docked, connect the dock, television and power first.
- If handheld, leave the console undocked and connect headphones before starting if you plan to use them.
- Launch Cronos only after the chosen setup is stable.
If the game crashes after a mode change
- Close the software from the HOME menu rather than repeatedly moving the console in and out of the dock.
- Restart Cronos in the mode you intend to use.
- Check System Settings > System > System Update and the game’s Software Update menu.
- Reproduce the problem only after saving or reaching a safe point, because a hard crash can discard unsaved progress.
- Record whether the crash occurred during handheld-to-docked, docked-to-handheld, or another action, along with the software version shown on the HOME menu.
The currently verified information does not establish whether a later patch has removed this issue. Check the publisher’s news page and the in-game version number before treating the report as resolved.
Audio, controller and room setup
Audio
Survival horror depends on subtle cues, so use headphones or a quiet television setup if you need to locate movement by sound. Keep the volume at a level that remains comfortable over a long session. Audio hardware cannot improve frame pacing, but clear sound can reduce missed cues when the image is dark or the encounter is chaotic.
Controller input
Use the controller layout that lets you move, aim and interact without stretching your hands. If input feels delayed only in docked mode, compare the same action in handheld mode before changing game controls. A difference between modes points toward the television or HDMI processing chain rather than a Cronos graphics setting.
Recommended Free Tools
Room lighting
Play in lighting that avoids reflections on the television or handheld screen. A completely dark room can make a bright display feel harsher, while strong light behind you can obscure black levels. Adjust the room first, then set the game or display brightness; otherwise you may compensate for glare by over-brightening the image.
A practical session checklist
- Confirm that you are running the Nintendo Switch 2 version.
- Check for a game update and note the installed version if troubleshooting.
- Choose handheld, tabletop or TV mode before launching.
- For TV play, enable Game Mode and use a stable direct HDMI input.
- For handheld play, use the built-in screen and keep the console undocked.
- Expect 30 FPS in both docked and handheld modes.
- Expect occasional struggles during hectic encounters.
- Do not search for an undocumented 60 FPS, Performance or Quality selector.
- Do not change between handheld and docked while Cronos is running.
- Keep ventilation clear and use reliable power for long sessions.
What the game includes and where it fits
Bandai Namco describes Cronos: The New Dawn as a third-person survival-horror game in which you salvage the past to fight for the future. You explore a post-apocalyptic setting, travel through time to 1980s-era Poland, and manage limited ammunition and supplies while dealing with temporal anomalies. The publisher warns that creatures you kill “won’t stay dead for long” because fallen enemies can be absorbed through Merging.
A physical Nintendo Switch 2 Standard Edition was announced for major retailers in EMEA and Australia, and the publisher’s shop describes that edition as including the full game. Availability, regional packaging and any current retail terms can change, so verify those details for your country rather than assuming that an edition listed for EMEA or Australia is sold in every market.
Limits of the current technical information
The available Switch 2 coverage establishes platform modes and a practical 30 FPS expectation, but it does not provide a publisher benchmark with a numeric resolution figure. It also does not verify the current patch number or confirm a fix for the handheld-to-docked crash. For that reason, this guide avoids claiming a guaranteed resolution, a fixed minimum frame rate, a 60 FPS option or a particular patch status.
If a future update adds a graphics selector or changes the crash behavior, the in-game menus and the publisher’s update notes should take precedence over this baseline setup. Until then, the safest configuration is still a fixed play mode, low-latency display processing when docked and realistic 30 FPS expectations.
Final recommendation
Use Game Mode and a clean HDMI path for docked Cronos sessions, or use the built-in screen for handheld sessions. Start in the mode you intend to keep, because switching from handheld to docked has been reported to cause a hard crash. Accept 30 FPS as the Switch 2 target, understand that hectic encounters can still struggle, and do not expect an undocumented Performance mode or numeric resolution guarantee. Those choices address the settings that can actually be controlled without promising improvements the port does not document.
