For swimming, choose headphones that play audio stored on the headset: Bluetooth streaming from a phone or watch is unreliable underwater because water disrupts the signal. Shokz OpenSwim Pro is a versatile option to consider if you want MP3 playback for swims and Bluetooth for workouts on land. For another bone-conduction swimming model, compare H2O Audio TRI 2 PRO Multi-Sport. Neither an IPX8 nor an IP68 label alone tells you how deep or how long a specific headset can be submerged, so check the model’s own instructions.

How to choose swimming headphones

Start with the way you will listen underwater, then check the headset’s stated water-use limits, battery life in the relevant playback mode, fit with your swim gear, and how you will load or access audio. Bone conduction leaves the ears open, but the models below still differ in playback, limits, and intended use.

  • Playback: Look for onboard MP3 playback or a model-specific offline feature. Bluetooth can be useful out of the water, but do not assume it will stream reliably while you swim.
  • Water limits: Follow the exact model’s instructions for depth and use. A rating such as IPX8 is not a universal promise of the same depth or duration across products.
  • Battery: Compare the stated runtime for the mode you will use. A headset may have different claimed runtimes for Bluetooth and MP3 playback.
  • Fit: Consider whether the headset sits comfortably with your goggles and swim cap, and whether you also want to wear it for land workouts. Fit varies by swimmer; no comparative fit testing is established here.
  • Audio workflow: Check the exact regional version’s supported file formats, storage, and transfer method before buying.

Why Bluetooth streaming usually fails underwater

Bluetooth relies on radio signals, and water interferes with their transmission. Shokz explicitly limits OpenSwim Pro underwater listening to MP3 mode, while H2O Audio’s comparison distinguishes Bluetooth-underwater range from the available playback modes. Shokz product information H2O Audio product comparison In practice, select music or other audio on the headset before getting in, or use an offline feature specifically supported by that model; do not count on a phone or watch streaming to a submerged headset.

Check before you buy

  1. Confirm the exact model and variant. Similar names can refer to different playback capabilities. In particular, original OpenSwim is not Bluetooth compatible, unlike OpenSwim Pro. Shokz support
  2. Read the water-use instructions. Look for the manufacturer’s stated depth and any use conditions. Do not translate an IP rating into a depth limit that the maker has not stated.
  3. Check how audio gets onto the headset. Verify the file formats, transfer method, storage, and whether Bluetooth is intended only for use out of the water.
  4. Compare runtime in swim mode. Use the MP3 or offline-mode figure when that is how you plan to listen underwater, and treat manufacturer runtimes as claims rather than guaranteed results.
  5. Consider your swim setup. Check whether the shape works with your cap and goggles, and whether you want the same headset for open-water sessions or land workouts.

The cited third-party coverage offers editorial assessments, not a standardized head-to-head test of comfort, sound quality, or open-water reliability.
