For plowed winter roads, prioritize appropriate winter tires and a well-matched AWD or 4WD system; for deep, unplowed snow, ground clearance becomes more important. No single SUV is established as the overall snow winner by the available evidence, and a powerful engine alone does not make a vehicle safer or more capable on snow.
What matters most in an SUV for snow?
Snow driving involves separate challenges: getting moving, maintaining grip while turning or braking, and clearing snow that could contact the vehicle’s underside. AWD and 4WD can distribute drive torque to help with acceleration, but they do not by themselves establish braking or cornering grip. Tires and driving conditions matter too.
AWD and 4WD
Compare the specific vehicle’s drivetrain and controls rather than relying on the AWD or 4WD label alone. Some vehicles offer selectable terrain settings. Edmunds discusses Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD configurations with Selec-Terrain snow mode as examples of features to investigate, not as proof of comparative performance (Edmunds’ guide to SUVs for snow).

Clearance matters most when snow is deep enough to reach the underside. Edmunds cites 8.7 inches for the Subaru Crosstrek in its guide; that figure is tied to the source’s model context and should not be assumed to apply to every year or trim. Check the current manufacturer specifications for the exact vehicle you are considering.

Tires, braking, and cornering
AWD or 4WD does not make winter tires unnecessary. Tire choice and fitment are vehicle-specific, and the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) says all four tires should be the same size unless the vehicle manufacturer specifies otherwise. It also says it is preferable to use winter/snow tires on all wheel positions. Follow the owner’s manual and consult a qualified tire professional when confirming fitment (USTMA tire care and service guidance).
Which SUVs are worth comparing?
These examples illustrate features to check, not a ranked snow test. Verify each vehicle’s model year, trim, equipment, and local availability before deciding.

Choose for your winter routes
Mostly plowed roads and slush
Focus on winter-tire availability and correct fitment, then compare the AWD or 4WD system and any snow mode. For these conditions, an SUV’s label or engine output is not a substitute for suitable tires and careful driving.

Deep snow or unplowed routes
Give ground clearance more weight because snow can contact the underside. Check the exact trim’s clearance and drivetrain, and consider whether your routes realistically require more capability than ordinary plowed-road driving. The cited vehicle examples do not establish a universal depth threshold or a comparative winner.
Check before buying or fitting tires
- Define the route: distinguish plowed roads and slush from deep or unplowed snow.
- Confirm the exact vehicle: verify the model year, trim, AWD/4WD configuration, terrain settings, and ground-clearance specification with current manufacturer information.
