If you want the closest follow-up to Resident Evil, start with 28 Days Later (2002) for infection panic and a deserted-world opening. Choose Dawn of the Dead (2004) for barricades, weapons and group resource pressure; [REC] (2007) for sealed-building, first-person-feeling panic; Event Horizon (1997) for an isolated-facility nightmare in space; and The Descent (2005) for claustrophobic creature survival underground.
These are editorial matches by mood and mechanics, not official adaptations or interchangeable versions of the game or film series. The useful question is which part of Resident Evil you want next: an outbreak, a siege, a hostile enclosed space, scarce safety, or a protagonist forced to keep moving.
Quick guide: which movie should you watch first?
| Film | Best match for | Threat | Main space | Pacing and combat feel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 28 Days Later (2002) | Infection panic and the shock of an apparently deserted world | Infected humans | Empty urban and rural environments | Relentless pursuit; survival under pressure rather than tactical inventory management |
| Dawn of the Dead (2004) | Barricades, weapons, group survival and dwindling resources | Undead | A fortified building surrounded by danger | Action-focused siege survival with recurring supply and trust problems |
| [REC] (2007) | Contained panic and a first-person-feeling point of view | Infection-driven human threat | A sealed apartment building | Investigative dread that can erupt into sudden flight and close-quarters escape |
| Event Horizon (1997) | Isolated-facility horror with a science-fiction explanation | Supernatural or cosmic force | A stranded spacecraft | Slow, disorienting escalation; survival depends on understanding what the facility is doing |
| The Descent (2005) | Claustrophobia, creatures and an environment that is itself a threat | Hostile creatures and physical hazards | An underground cave system | Gradual tension that turns into improvised escape and creature survival |
How to choose a survival-horror movie after Resident Evil
Resident Evil combines several kinds of fear that do not always appear together. There may be an outbreak, but also a locked facility, limited ammunition, environmental obstacles, a mystery to investigate and a route that keeps narrowing. The five films above separate those ingredients so you can choose by feeling instead of by a questionable universal ranking.

Pick 28 Days Later when you want the threat to feel fast, contagious and socially destabilizing. It is the clearest choice for searches such as “best infection outbreak movies” and “survival horror movies with zombies,” although its infected are not presented as the same kind of undead seen in a conventional zombie siege.

For a siege and resource decisions
Dawn of the Dead is the choice when you remember the weapons, barricades and group arguments more than the laboratory mystery. Its central pleasure is watching people turn a temporary refuge into a defensive system while every decision about supplies and trust changes how long that refuge can last.
For a sealed location and immediate panic
[REC] is the strongest “claustrophobic horror like Resident Evil” pick. The contained setting removes the relief of a wide escape route, and the first-person-feeling presentation keeps the viewer close to the characters’ uncertainty.
For science-fiction facility horror
Event Horizon transfers the dangerous-building formula into a spacecraft. It is the natural answer to “space horror like Event Horizon,” especially if what you liked in Resident Evil was an isolated facility whose design and history are part of the threat.
For underground entrapment and creatures
The Descent is a mood match rather than an infection story. It concentrates on darkness, confined movement, navigation and creatures in an environment where even a successful retreat can leave the characters in greater danger.

28 Days Later (2002): the best infection-panic match
Why it feels like Resident Evil
The film begins from the premise that ordinary society has been overwhelmed, then uses the resulting emptiness as a source of dread. A protagonist moving through spaces that should be busy but are not creates the same unease as entering an abandoned game location and wondering what happened just before arrival. The infection threat is active rather than static: the danger pursues, forcing movement and quick choices.
Sony Pictures classifies the film as horror, science fiction, suspense and thriller. That combination explains why it works for viewers who want more than a conventional zombie story. The horror comes from exposure and contagion; the thriller momentum comes from pursuit; and the science-fiction frame gives the outbreak a wider implication than a single attack.
What kind of survival loop it delivers
- Threat: infected people who turn every encounter into a chase rather than a slow, predictable obstacle.
- Space: a world that feels emptied out, so open streets can be as unnerving as a locked corridor.
- Pacing: a rapid survival rhythm built around reaching the next safe place before the threat catches up.
- Combat feel: escape and improvisation matter more than a neatly stocked arsenal.
- Tone: grim, urgent and grounded in the social consequences of an outbreak.
Who should choose it
Watch this first if your favorite Resident Evil moments involve an outbreak escaping containment, a protagonist waking into a changed world, or the fear that one mistake can expose everyone nearby. It is less suitable if you specifically want a fortified-room siege or a supernatural explanation.

Why it feels like Resident Evil
The 2004 film puts survival inside a fortified building. That setup turns architecture into a game board: entrances need watching, supplies need managing and every person inside can affect the group’s odds. Time describes it as violent, action-focused survival horror, which is a useful shorthand for its emphasis on armed defense and sustained pressure.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Unlike an isolated protagonist moving through a sequence of rooms, this film makes survival communal. The group must agree on priorities, decide when to leave safety and cope with the fact that a refuge can become a trap. Those decisions echo the tension of conserving ammunition and choosing whether to explore a dangerous area for a needed item.
What kind of survival loop it delivers
- Threat: undead attackers who make every opening, exit and noise a potential breach.
- Space: a barricaded building that offers protection but also limits options.
- Pacing: alternating preparation, confrontation and periods in which the group’s defenses are tested.
- Combat feel: firearms, improvised defenses and coordinated group action rather than solitary stealth.
- Tone: brutal, kinetic and focused on the cost of keeping a community alive.
Who should choose it
Choose Dawn of the Dead when you want “movies like Resident Evil” that emphasize weapons, safe-room logic and resource pressure. It is not the best first pick for a quiet mystery or a single-character descent into madness; its strength is the siege and the arguments that surround it.
[REC] (2007): the strongest contained-panic pick
Why it feels like Resident Evil
[REC] traps its characters inside an apartment building while an emergency is unfolding around them. The first-person-feeling perspective makes the viewer experience the uncertainty directly: information arrives when the camera reaches it, and a hallway or stairwell can become dangerous before anyone has time to plan.
A Resident Evil similarity listing places [REC] alongside Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and 28 Days Later. The useful connection is not that the films share a plot. It is that each turns an infection-driven threat into a problem of movement, containment and incomplete information.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
What kind of survival loop it delivers
- Threat: infected humans whose behavior makes close contact and delayed decisions especially dangerous.
- Space: a sealed residential building with limited routes and no dependable outside help.
- Pacing: investigation and observation repeatedly give way to sudden panic.
- Combat feel: improvised escape and split-second reactions rather than confident firepower.
- Tone: immediate, breathless and documentary-like in its sense of proximity.
Who should choose it
Watch it when you want the feeling of being locked inside a level with no reliable map and no safe reset. It is especially effective for viewers who prefer short sightlines, crowding and the dread of hearing something before seeing it. If handheld or first-person-style presentation makes you uncomfortable, choose one of the more conventionally filmed options instead.

Why it feels like Resident Evil
The film follows a rescue crew responding to a signal from a spacecraft and discovering a horror that threatens both their bodies and their sanity. Paramount’s official synopsis describes the crew confronting “an unimaginable interstellar horror that will test the entire team’s sanity and souls.” That wording captures the movie’s central shift: the facility is not merely damaged; its history and purpose become sources of fear.
This is the pick for viewers who liked the laboratory, ship or research-station side of Resident Evil. The environment is isolated, systems are unreliable and the crew cannot simply step outside. Science-fiction technology supplies the setting, while cosmic or supernatural forces supply the uncertainty.

Who should choose it
Choose Event Horizon when your ideal follow-up is “space horror like Event Horizon” with a rescue mission, sealed corridors and a threat that may be impossible to understand. It is a poorer match if you want an infection outbreak or a straightforward undead attack.
The Descent (2005): the claustrophobic creature-survival choice
Why it feels like Resident Evil
The Descent moves survival horror underground, where darkness, narrow passages and difficult navigation create danger before the creatures appear. The cave system is not a neutral backdrop: it restricts posture, visibility, speed and escape routes. That makes the film a strong mood match for the trapped-in-a-dangerous-place tension associated with Resident Evil.
It is important to set expectations. This is not an infection narrative, and it does not reproduce the series’ laboratory or outbreak structure. Its connection is mechanical: characters enter a hostile enclosed environment, lose reliable control over their route and must keep moving while the surroundings become less forgiving.
What kind of survival loop it delivers
- Threat: creatures combined with falls, darkness, tight spaces and the risk of becoming lost.
- Space: an underground cave network where retreat can be as difficult as advancing.
- Pacing: slow claustrophobic escalation followed by urgent creature survival.
- Combat feel: improvised, close-range and inseparable from the need to navigate.
- Tone: physically oppressive, tense and intensely focused on confinement.
Who should choose it
Pick this film for “claustrophobic horror like Resident Evil,” especially if the series’ underground labs, maintenance tunnels and hidden rooms are your favorite locations. Skip it as your first choice only if you need an outbreak story or a large-scale urban setting.
Three watch paths depending on the feeling you want
The closest outbreak path
- Start with 28 Days Later (2002) for the infection and pursuit framework.
- Follow with [REC] (2007) to compress that threat into a sealed building.
- Finish with Dawn of the Dead (2004) for the group’s attempt to turn temporary shelter into a defensible base.
The enclosed-facility path
- Watch Event Horizon (1997) for an isolated spacecraft whose purpose becomes part of the horror.
- Move to [REC] (2007) for immediate, human-scale containment panic.
- End with The Descent (2005) to trade corridors and machinery for natural tunnels and physical confinement.
The action-and-survival path
- Begin with Dawn of the Dead (2004) for barricades, firearms and group strategy.
- Continue with 28 Days Later (2002) when you want pursuit and movement rather than a fixed defense.
- Choose The Descent (2005) for close-range improvisation in a space where conventional firepower offers limited comfort.
How these films differ from the 2026 Resident Evil reboot
The 2026 reboot has been described as an all-new story about a medical courier caught in “an action-packed, non-stop race for survival.” GamesRadar+ reports a 95-minute runtime and characterizes it as a back-to-basics survival-horror ride built around scarce ammunition, environmental obstacles and an Umbrella-lab climax.
Those details make the five recommendations useful in different ways. 28 Days Later supplies the outbreak urgency; Dawn of the Dead supplies weapons and defensive resource pressure; [REC] supplies containment and point-of-view immediacy; Event Horizon supplies the isolated-facility model; and The Descent supplies claustrophobic movement through a hostile environment. None should be treated as an official prequel, adaptation or definitive “winner” for Resident Evil fans.
