If you want an alternative to Minecraft or Valheim, start with the kind of survival experience you actually want. Choose Valheim for cooperative building, crafting, boss progression and procedural exploration; The Long Dark for demanding solo wilderness survival and an authored story path; Subnautica for underwater discovery, technology and habitat construction; or Don’t Starve Together for stylized multiplayer survival built around fighting, farming, building and exploration.

There is no single winner here. These games use the word “survival” for four very different loops, so the useful question is whether you want a shared construction project, an isolated environmental challenge, a guided expedition or a group game that keeps everyone under pressure.

Quick comparison

The table below is a fit guide rather than a ranking. Each recommendation is strongest on a different axis.

For the broadest explanation of Valheim’s procedural world, bosses, cooking, crafting and building, see PC Gamer’s survival-games overview. The same overview describes Subnautica’s underwater survival, crafting, habitat and submarine systems.

#1 Best Overall
Don't Starve Together Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Cooperate with your friends in a private game, or take your chances with strangers online. Work with other players to survive the harsh environment, or strike out on your own. Do whatever it takes, but most importantly, Don't Starve.

How to choose an alternative without guessing

  1. Decide whether other players are central. Pick Valheim if you want a long-running shared world and construction project. Pick Don’t Starve Together if the multiplayer survival systems themselves are the point. Pick The Long Dark or Subnautica when you want a primarily solo experience.
  2. Choose your preferred kind of pressure. The Long Dark makes weather, isolation and scarce resources the challenge. Don’t Starve Together applies immediate pressure while you fight, farm and build. Valheim combines survival needs with combat and boss progression. Subnautica balances survival requirements against the urge to explore deeper and unlock technology.
  3. Decide how much story guidance you want. The Long Dark has a distinct story mode, Wintermute. Subnautica uses environmental discovery and technology progression to give exploration direction. Valheim and Don’t Starve Together lean more toward stories that emerge from what you and your group do.
  4. Pick the setting you will enjoy inhabiting. An Arctic wilderness, a Viking-inspired procedural landscape, an alien ocean and a stylized wilderness produce very different moods even when they share gathering, crafting and shelter-building ideas.
  5. Check your platform before buying. Platform listings and regional store availability can change. Klei’s official pages list Don’t Starve Together for Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, the Apple App Store and Google Play; its support page specifically names PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android: Klei’s game page and Klei’s support article. Valheim: the alternative for a shared building project

What the game prioritizes

Valheim is the strongest choice when survival is a reason to build a home, gather materials and prepare for the next expedition with friends. Its large procedural world, crafting, cooking, base building and boss fights create a loop in which the settlement is both a practical refuge and a long-term construction project. PC Gamer’s coverage identifies those systems as central to the experience: read the Valheim discussion in PC Gamer’s guide.

Procedural generation matters because exploration is not simply a one-time tour through a fixed sequence. Each group has to learn its world, decide where to establish a base and plan journeys around the resources and threats it encounters. That makes Valheim a good fit for friends who enjoy comparing discoveries, improving a shared base and turning each expedition into preparation for the next objective.

Why it works for co-op

Co-op gives Valheim’s construction systems a clear social purpose. One player can focus on gathering and cooking while another improves the base or prepares for combat, then the group can travel together toward a boss encounter. The game also supports solo play, but its combination of a persistent-feeling home, shared projects and expedition planning is especially compelling when several people contribute.

What to expect from survival pressure

Valheim does not frame survival as isolation alone. Food, crafting and shelter sit alongside combat and boss progression, so the pressure rises as your group decides how far to explore and when it is ready to confront a stronger threat. If you want a game in which every building improvement supports a wider adventure, this is the most natural pick of the four.

Who should choose it

  • Choose Valheim if your ideal session includes gathering resources, expanding a base and setting out with friends.
  • Choose it if procedural exploration is more appealing than following a fixed map or chapter sequence.
  • Choose another game if you want a primarily authored narrative, a dedicated solo wilderness challenge or a non-Viking setting.

The Long Dark: the solo choice for environmental survival

What makes it different

The Long Dark treats the environment itself as the main opponent. Its appeal is isolation, resource management and the need to make careful survival decisions in an Arctic wilderness rather than constructing a large multiplayer base. The official site describes Survival Mode as offering “100s of hours of free-form, open-world survival gameplay”: The Long Dark’s official site.

That design changes what “progress” means. Instead of measuring success by how elaborate a settlement becomes or how quickly a group defeats a boss, you are managing exposure to risk, deciding which resources are worth carrying and judging when a journey is safe enough to attempt. The resulting tension comes from consequences in the landscape and from the limits of what you can obtain.

Two ways to play

Survival Mode is the open-ended option. It is suited to players who want to set their own priorities and continue exploring, scavenging and managing resources without a prescribed story route. The same official site presents Wintermute as a story mode following bush pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood. That gives The Long Dark a clearer authored path than Valheim or Don’t Starve Together while retaining a separate free-form mode.

Why it is best for solo players

The Long Dark is the direct recommendation when you want the wilderness to feel quiet, demanding and personal. There is no need to coordinate a shared base or divide tasks among a group. Every decision belongs to one survivor, and the game’s environmental focus keeps attention on observation, preparation and efficient use of supplies.

Who should choose it

  • Pick The Long Dark if you want a solo-first game where weather, distance, shelter and supplies shape every plan.
  • Pick Wintermute if you want an explicit story involving Mackenzie and Astrid.
  • Pick Survival Mode if you prefer a free-form open world and self-directed objectives.
  • Look elsewhere if cooperative construction or a brightly stylized multiplayer world is the main attraction.

Subnautica: underwater exploration with a clear sense of discovery

The core loop

Subnautica shifts survival into an alien ocean. PC Gamer describes it as a combination of survival, crafting and building in an underwater world, with resource gathering, sustenance, habitats, submarines, coral reefs, caves and trenches all contributing to exploration and progression: PC Gamer’s Subnautica coverage.

The setting is more than visual decoration. Water determines how you travel, where you can build and what you can discover. A trip may begin as a search for resources and become an expedition into a cave or trench, while newly unlocked technology expands the places you can reach and the equipment you can use. Habitats provide a construction goal, but they also support continued exploration rather than replacing it.

How progression stays directed

Subnautica is a strong alternative for players who like survival systems but do not want a purely procedural sandbox. Environmental clues, new materials and technology unlocks give the world a sense of direction. You still decide where to go and what to gather, yet the setting keeps presenting questions: what lies beyond the reef, what is inside a deeper cave and which technology will make the next area accessible?

That combination makes it more story-led than Valheim or Don’t Starve Together without relying on a conventional chapter-by-chapter structure. Discovery supplies the momentum. Building a habitat or submarine is meaningful because it enables the next stage of investigation.

Why it suits solo exploration

The cited coverage frames Subnautica around solo exploration. It is therefore the best match here for someone who wants to gather resources, build a personal base and uncover a world at their own pace, with technology progression providing a steady sense of purpose.

Who should choose it

  • Choose Subnautica if alien-ocean exploration is more appealing than forests, snowfields or a stylized wilderness.
  • Choose it if you want construction to support exploration through habitats and submarines.
  • Choose it if you prefer environmental storytelling and technology unlocks to boss-led progression.
  • Choose another title if your priority is an explicitly multiplayer survival experience.

Don’t Starve Together: multiplayer survival under constant pressure

What the official description promises

Klei describes Don’t Starve Together as “Fight, Farm, Build and Explore Together in the standalone multiplayer expansion to the uncompromising wilderness survival game, Don’t Starve.” That wording captures its identity: the game is designed around doing survival tasks with other people rather than merely allowing a solo game to be shared. See Klei’s official game page.

Its stylized presentation does not make the systems casual. The central activities—fighting, farming, building and exploring—compete for attention while the wilderness keeps applying pressure. A group must decide what to do now, what can wait and how to divide work without losing track of survival needs.

Why it is different from Valheim

Both games support cooperative building and exploration, but their emphasis differs. Valheim is a long-form procedural adventure in which a shared base, crafting and boss progression give the group a broad building-and-expedition arc. Don’t Starve Together makes multiplayer pressure more immediate and foregrounds the need to fight, farm, build and explore as connected survival jobs.

Choose Don’t Starve Together when the group itself is the organizing principle. Choose Valheim when you want a larger construction project and a progression path built around exploration and bosses.

Platform coverage

Klei’s official listings include Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, the Apple App Store and Google Play. Klei’s support documentation names PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. These listings establish broad platform coverage, not guaranteed cross-play or identical editions, so check the current store page for the devices and region you use.

Who should choose it

  • Pick Don’t Starve Together when you want survival mechanics designed for a group from the outset.
  • Pick it if fighting, farming, building and exploration all need to matter in the same session.
  • Pick another title if you want an authored solo story or a calmer, technology-led exploration arc.

How the four games differ on the questions that matter

Solo versus co-op

The Long Dark is the clearest solo-first choice. Subnautica is also best framed around solo exploration in the cited material. Valheim supports solo play but becomes especially compelling as a shared world. Don’t Starve Together is the explicit multiplayer recommendation because its title and official description center on doing survival tasks together.

Building freedom

Valheim and Don’t Starve Together make building a central activity. In Valheim, the base is part of a larger crafting, cooking, exploration and boss loop. In Don’t Starve Together, construction is one of several urgent group responsibilities. Subnautica uses habitats and submarines as progression tools that open more exploration. The Long Dark focuses on shelter and resource decisions rather than a large construction sandbox.

Story guidance

The Long Dark offers the most clearly authored route through Wintermute, while Survival Mode remains free-form. Subnautica guides discovery through environmental storytelling and technology progression. Valheim and Don’t Starve Together leave more of the narrative to emergent events, group goals and the places you choose to explore.

Survival pressure

The Long Dark and Don’t Starve Together apply the most immediate pressure, but in different ways: environmental isolation and resource decisions in The Long Dark, versus a stylized multiplayer wilderness that asks the group to fight, farm, build and explore. Valheim layers survival over combat and boss progression. Subnautica balances survival needs with curiosity and the steady reward of new technology.

Setting and mood

Choose the Arctic wilderness for isolation, a Viking-inspired procedural world for communal adventure, an alien ocean for discovery, or a stylized wilderness for cooperative pressure. This choice is not cosmetic: it determines whether the game feels like endurance, expedition, investigation or coordinated crisis management.

Decision guide for common “what should I play?” questions

“What should I play after Minecraft?”

Start with Valheim if the part of Minecraft you value most is building with friends while exploring a world and preparing for major encounters. Try Subnautica instead if you want building to support a more directed, discovery-focused journey. Pick Don’t Starve Together if you want multiplayer survival to be more demanding and task-oriented.

“What is the best survival game like Valheim?”

There is no single equivalent because “like Valheim” can mean different things. Don’t Starve Together is the closest fit for cooperative survival responsibilities, while Subnautica is the better alternative for resource gathering, habitats and exploration with stronger environmental direction. The Long Dark is the deliberate opposite if you want to leave co-op building behind and test yourself alone.

“Which is best for solo play?”

Choose The Long Dark for the most focused solo wilderness challenge and for the option of an authored story through Wintermute. Choose Subnautica when you want solo exploration to be driven by technology, habitats and environmental discovery.

“Which is best with friends?”

Choose Don’t Starve Together when the group wants survival systems explicitly organized around fighting, farming, building and exploration. Choose Valheim when friends want to spend a long time improving a shared base, traveling through a procedural world and preparing for boss fights.

Practical checks before you commit

  • Confirm the edition and platform. Store listings, supported devices and regional availability can change. The official Klei pages provide the clearest platform information for Don’t Starve Together; verify every other title on the store associated with your device.
  • Decide whether you want a fixed story or a self-directed run. Wintermute supplies an authored route in The Long Dark, while Survival Mode is free-form. Subnautica sits between those approaches through environmental clues and technology progression. Valheim and Don’t Starve Together are more emergent.
  • Ask what you want your base to do. In Valheim, it is a communal home and staging point for expeditions and bosses. In Subnautica, habitats and submarines extend access to the ocean. In Don’t Starve Together, construction is one of several group survival jobs. In The Long Dark, shelter is primarily part of resource and risk management.
  • Set expectations for multiplayer. “Supports co-op” and “designed around multiplayer” are not identical. Valheim supports solo and co-op, with co-op especially strong; Don’t Starve Together is explicitly built as a multiplayer expansion. Do not assume cross-play or identical content across platforms without checking the current listing.

The bottom line for each type of player

For a shared building-and-exploration world: choose Valheim.

For demanding solo wilderness survival: choose The Long Dark, with Wintermute if you want an authored story or Survival Mode for free-form play.

For underwater discovery and technology-led progression: choose Subnautica.

For stylized survival that is fundamentally a group activity: choose Don’t Starve Together.
