Grounded is the best first choice for most State of Decay players on Xbox Game Pass. It combines scavenging, resource management, equipment crafting, dangerous creatures and a base that can be attacked, while supporting solo play or online co-op with up to three friends. It does not reproduce State of Decay 2’s survivor recruitment or community simulation, however.
If you want a different kind of survival, The Long Dark shifts the focus toward solitary wilderness survival, while Subnautica 2 offers underwater exploration, base building and optional co-op. Grounded 2 also shares the open-world survival and crafting loop, but its Game Preview status and current catalog listing must be checked before you rely on it.
What makes State of Decay difficult to replace?
State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition combines a zombie-apocalypse action game with a persistent home base. You scavenge for supplies, improve facilities, equip survivors and protect the settlement from threats. The Xbox listing describes customizable survivor facilities and cross-platform multiplayer with up to three friends, and lists the game as included with Game Pass.

That combination matters when choosing an alternative. A game can have crafting without having a home to defend, or co-op without having any community-management layer. The recommendations below therefore compare five separate qualities:

How the trade-offs map to State of Decay
Base and community management
State of Decay 2 makes the settlement itself part of the strategy. Its Xbox description specifically points to customizable facilities for survivors. That means an alternative should be judged on two separate questions: can you construct or improve a home, and can you manage a community inside it? Grounded clearly addresses the first question through a threatened base, but its cited description does not establish survivor recruitment, morale, facility specialization or a persistent roster. Subnautica 2 is likewise described in terms of constructing bases rather than managing human survivors. If the social simulation is your favorite feature, none of these recommendations is documented as a direct substitute.
Survival and crafting
Grounded is the clearest match for a resource loop built around equipment. Its official description highlights craftable and upgradeable armor and weapons, giving gathered materials an immediate purpose. Subnautica 2 takes a broader exploration-and-adaptation approach in an alien ocean and also includes base construction. The two games therefore overlap in gathering, making equipment and returning to a safe location, but they change the hazards and the reasons you explore. Grounded supports solo play and online co-op with up to three friends. Xbox Wire describes Subnautica 2 as designed for solo play with optional online co-op for up to three friends. Those player limits resemble the four-player group size implied by State of Decay 2’s listing, but a matching headcount does not guarantee matching progression, world ownership or save behavior. Confirm the current multiplayer instructions on each live title page before organizing a long-running group. For The Long Dark, verify the current mode rather than assuming it offers the same online structure.
Setting and tone
State of Decay is a zombie-apocalypse story in a human settlement. Grounded shrinks the action to a miniature backyard where ordinary creatures become major threats. The Long Dark points toward an isolated wilderness experience. Subnautica 2 replaces ruined streets with an alien ocean and underwater exploration. Grounded 2 keeps the miniature-world direction while presenting a newer open-world survival and building loop. Choose by the atmosphere you want to inhabit, not only by the shared word “survival.”
Availability certainty
A title can appear in an Xbox gallery without being included in your particular Game Pass plan or territory. Why State of Decay players should try it
- There is a real home-base loop. Your construction and preparation matter because the backyard remains dangerous. You are not simply moving through disposable levels.
- Crafting affects readiness. Gathering resources and upgrading armor and weapons gives scavenging a practical purpose, similar to the way State of Decay turns supplies into better odds for the next expedition.
- Threats roam the world. Creatures replace zombies, so the tension comes from a hostile environment rather than an undead community.
- Co-op is built in. The game supports solo play and online co-op with up to three friends, matching the size of a typical State of Decay co-op group.
What Grounded does not replicate
Grounded’s miniature backyard is a very different fantasy from a town occupied by human survivors. The official description does not establish survivor recruitment, morale, interpersonal conflicts or a persistent community simulation. You build and defend a base, but you should not expect to manage a roster of interchangeable survivors or make the same social decisions as in State of Decay 2.

Choose Grounded when the base, crafting and co-op loop are your priorities. Choose another title if managing a group of survivors is the feature you cannot give up.
Release and catalog check
Grounded reached full release on September 27, 2022. Before installing, search the current Game Pass catalog for your region and subscription plan; catalog membership can change even for a fully released game.
2. The Long Dark: choose it for a more solitary wilderness
The Long Dark is a candidate for readers who want survival in a wilderness setting rather than another action game about the undead. Xbox’s action-adventure gallery lists the title, but the available evidence does not establish its current Game Pass plan or regional eligibility, nor does it provide enough detail to describe all of its systems confidently.
Where it fits
The editorial distinction is straightforward: this is the option to investigate when you want isolation, environmental danger and a slower survival tone. It is not presented as a direct substitute for State of Decay’s base defense or co-op community play.

3. Subnautica 2 (Game Preview): underwater exploration with optional co-op
Subnautica 2 moves the survival formula to an alien ocean. Xbox Wire describes an underwater survival adventure built around adapting, exploring and constructing bases, playable alone or with optional online co-op for up to three friends. That makes it a strong choice if the part of State of Decay you value most is leaving a safe base to gather what you need in a dangerous world.
Why the loop may appeal
- Exploration drives progression. The environment itself is the central obstacle, replacing State of Decay’s ruined towns and zombie infestations with an alien ocean.
- Base construction remains important. You still have a place to build and return to, but the setting and hazards are fundamentally different.
- Co-op is optional. You can play solo or invite up to three friends online, so the game does not require a group.
Game Preview limitations
Subnautica 2 entered Game Preview on May 14, 2026, following an Xbox Wire announcement published May 4, 2026. It does not establish eligibility for every Game Pass plan or territory.

4. Grounded 2 (Game Preview): another crafting-and-building option
An Xbox Wire announcement dated July 15, 2025 described Grounded 2 as an open-world survival game with crafting, base building and solo or friend play, and announced a Game Pass arrival on July 29, 2025. Those details make it relevant to State of Decay players, but they are historical evidence of an announced launch rather than confirmation that the game remains in your catalog today.
Why it belongs on your shortlist
At a high level, Grounded 2 shares the loop many players are seeking: explore an exposed world, gather materials, make equipment and improve a place you can use as a base. The miniature-world premise still separates it from zombie community management, so the recommendation is about structure rather than setting.
Check its status first
Look up the live Xbox listing for your country and plan. Confirm whether it is still in Game Preview, whether access is included with your subscription and which platforms are supported. Do not infer current availability solely from the July 2025 announcement.
Requirements and cost considerations
These recommendations are digital Game Pass choices, not accessories or physical products. You do not need to buy a disc, printed guide or special controller to evaluate them. The practical requirement is an active subscription plan that includes the title in your region, plus the supported Xbox or PC platform shown on the live listing. Choose Grounded 2 if you want a newer version of the same broad loop
Grounded 2 is worth checking for players who want open-world survival, crafting and building in a newer Game Preview. Treat its catalog status as unconfirmed until the current Xbox listing says otherwise.
How to check Game Pass availability before you install
Game Pass is a changing library, and an Xbox gallery is not a guarantee that a title is included with every plan or in every country. Use this process each time you make a choice:

Grounded and Subnautica 2 are described as supporting solo play with online co-op for up to three friends. That tells you the group size, not whether progression, saves, difficulty or host requirements work like State of Decay 2.
