The strongest all-purpose layout in Supermarket Simulator is a modular grid of straight, category-based aisles with a continuous perimeter route from the entrance to checkout. Keep chilled, frozen, ambient, and produce areas distinct; put high-turnover stock near storage access; and place produce scales immediately before the tills. This arrangement reduces unnecessary walking, makes restocking predictable, and leaves clear expansion points.

There is no developer-published blueprint, universal aisle-width number, or guaranteed customer-path formula. The plan below is a practical starting template based on the game’s stated efficiency goals, the Snap/Grid System, and experienced-player guidance. Adjust it using your actual stockouts, sell-through, and traffic rather than treating any community number as an engine rule.

The best all-round blueprint

Start with a rectangular customer loop. Leave a clear route along the store perimeter from the entrance, past the shopping areas, to the checkout zone. Inside that loop, place straight parallel aisles in a modular grid. Align shelf ends and refrigerators to the grid instead of creating diagonal runs or isolated islands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the entrance side for the first shopping zone, reserve one side or rear wall for chilled and frozen equipment, and keep produce stalls together beside the checkout area. The exact compass direction does not matter; the important features are a legible route, category grouping, and unobstructed access for both customers and restockers.

At every aisle end, leave enough open floor for a customer or employee to turn without clipping a shelf, rack, checkout, or another aisle. Because the developer has not published a numeric aisle-width requirement, judge spacing by movement tests: walk a loaded restocking route, observe customers turning at both ends, and widen any end where traffic hesitates or staff repeatedly reroute.

What this layout optimizes

  • Walking distance: fast-selling products can be replenished from a nearby storage exit.
  • Route clarity: customers can follow one obvious loop instead of encountering dead ends.
  • Restocker access: straight runs and open ends reduce turns and blocked approaches.
  • Merchandising: related products remain in readable groups, while discounts receive additional facings.
  • Expansion: a grid lets you extend an aisle or add a parallel run without rebuilding the whole shop.

Build the floor plan in this order

  1. Mark the perimeter route. Before placing furniture, reserve a continuous path from the entrance to checkout. Do not fill this corridor with temporary racks; it becomes the main circulation spine as the store grows.
  2. Turn on and use the Snap/Grid System. Patch 1.5.0 introduced the system and made grid size customizable. Snap shelves, refrigerators, freezers, stalls, and checkout furniture to consistent lines. If an update causes overlaps or clipping, pick up and reposition affected furniture rather than building around the error.
  3. Lay out straight aisle modules. Place parallel shelf runs with matching ends. Keep each run long enough to be useful but short enough that customers and employees can turn at both ends without crossing the main perimeter route.
  4. Assign each run a category. Decide which rows are ambient packaged goods, chilled goods, frozen goods, or another unlocked group before filling them. Leave a planned gap for a future run instead of wedging new furniture into a high-traffic corner.
  5. Put cold equipment together. A refrigerator run and a freezer run should be visually distinct from ordinary shelves. This makes both shopping and replenishment easier to read.
  6. Create a produce-and-checkout zone. Group produce stalls near the tills. Install the scale directly before checkout, not in the middle of a shopping aisle.
  7. Test with a restocking trip. Walk from the storage exit to the emptiest shelf in each category. If that route crosses the customer loop repeatedly, move the category or storage access point before buying more furniture.
  8. Observe one complete selling cycle. Watch for queues, customers turning around, employees waiting at corners, and shelves that empty earlier than neighboring products. Make one change at a time so you can identify its effect.

Zone shelves by product type and replenishment needs

Ambient packaged goods

Use ordinary shelf aisles for ambient products and keep related items in contiguous runs. A customer should not need to cross the store to move between products that naturally belong together. Consistent category blocks also make it easier to identify an incorrectly placed item or a shelf that has not been assigned the intended product.

Place the most frequently replenished ambient products on runs nearest the storage access route. Lower-turnover items can occupy the farther ends, provided they do not block a high-volume path.

Chilled goods

Keep refrigerators in a dedicated run rather than mixing them into every ordinary aisle. A cold-food block gives the player and restockers a predictable destination and preserves clear turning space around bulky equipment. Leave the approach to refrigerator doors open; a visually tidy row is not useful if a rack or checkout blocks access.

Frozen goods

Use the same principle for freezers: group them in a freezer run and keep their replenishment path direct. Frozen equipment tends to consume more floor depth than a normal shelf, so plan the turning area before placing the first unit. Do not sacrifice the perimeter route to fit one more freezer.

Produce

Give produce its own stall-and-scale zone beside checkout. Keeping stalls together prevents weighing traffic from cutting across ordinary shopping routes. The scale is the final stop a customer makes before checkout, according to the Steam Community guide, so place it immediately before the tills and keep that approach unobstructed.

How much shelf space each item needs

There is no fixed universal facing count that guarantees a full day of sales. A 2025 Steam Community guide says that stocking about 20 units of an item will generally be enough for a day, but presents this as player guidance rather than a guaranteed rule. Use it as an initial order size, then compare the opening stock with the quantity sold and the time of each stockout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Discounts change the calculation dramatically. The same guide reports that a product discounted by 40%–60% can sell 100–200 items per day and therefore needs more shelf space. Those figures are community observations, not a promise that every product or store will reach that volume. When an item goes on sale, add facings before the rush, place its reserve stock near the storage exit, and check actual sell-through before permanently rebuilding the aisle.

Demand signal Initial placement decision What to monitor
Normal, steady seller Begin with roughly 20 units as a community-guided daily starting point. Whether it sells out early or still has stock at closing.
40%–60% discount Add extra facings and reserve stock; community guidance reports 100–200 sales per day in some cases. Actual sales rate, remaining units, and replenishment trips.
Repeated stockout before the next delivery Move the item closer to storage and increase its shelf space. Whether the change reduces crossings and missed sales.
Consistent leftover stock Reduce facings or use the space for a faster seller. Demand over several ordinary days, not one unusual day.

Give volatile products flexible space. A modular run lets you remove one shelf or add a second facing without disturbing an entire category. Keep discounted or unusually popular items in a location customers can reach without blocking the scale or checkout queue.

Place produce, scales, and checkouts to avoid congestion

Use a single, readable sequence: produce stalls, scale, then checkout. The scale should be close enough to the tills that customers do not need to backtrack, but not so close that its queue blocks the checkout approach. Keep the produce cluster outside the main aisle spine so shoppers buying packaged goods can continue around the loop.

If you employ a customer helper, position the helper’s work area where it does not narrow the produce-to-scale approach. When congestion appears, first move a stall or decorative object; do not immediately lengthen every aisle. The scale’s fixed role as the last stop means a poorly placed scale can create a bottleneck even when the rest of the store is spacious.

Design the storage room for short, repeatable trips

Storage should be organized around the exit route, not simply filled to its maximum capacity. Use wall runs for racks, then compact central rows while preserving a straight path from the loading area to the store door. Keep the fastest-moving stock nearest that exit so a refill requires fewer crossings.

Label racks consistently. A simple scheme such as category first and product second is more useful than labels that change whenever a new license unlocks. Keep similar categories together and avoid using unlabeled racks as permanent overflow; the Steam Community guide specifically recommends managing unlabeled-rack use when organizing storage.

That guide reports that at least 82 racks can fit in a storage room and suggests moving the computer there to free supermarket floor space. Treat 82 as a community benchmark for a particular game version, not a guaranteed capacity for every future patch or room shape. Verify the fit after major updates and leave a walking corridor rather than filling every remaining tile.

Storage placement priorities

  1. Put sale items and products that routinely empty first along the exit-side wall.
  2. Place chilled and frozen reserves where their corresponding store runs are easiest to reach without crossing the whole room.
  3. Keep a direct loading-to-door lane clear.
  4. Move the computer into storage if doing so releases a useful customer-facing tile and does not obstruct the staff route.
  5. When a rack is moved, update its label immediately so the next refill does not become a search task.

Compare layout patterns before you commit

Layout pattern Strength Weakness Best use
Modular parallel grid Clear categories, predictable turns, and simple expansion. Requires planning space at aisle ends. Most stores and most stages of progression.
Single perimeter loop with interior islands Very legible customer circulation. Interior islands can lengthen storage-to-shelf trips if categories are scattered. Small stores with limited furniture.
Dense wall-to-wall packing Maximizes immediate display capacity. Creates blocked turns, awkward restocking, and little room for discounts or new licenses. Only as a temporary measure while testing demand.
Mixed-category rows Can use leftover shelf space quickly. Harder to scan, refill, and expand without moving several products. Short-term overflow, not a core plan.

Choose between plans by comparing six practical measures: walking distance from storage to shelf, clarity of the customer route, congestion around scales and checkouts, facings available for volatile products, restocker access, and how easily a new license or furniture type can be inserted.

Aisle width, turning space, and blocked routes

The available sources do not establish an exact aisle-width number. Instead of copying a numeric rule from another game, use a functional test. Walk the route while carrying stock, observe a customer entering from both ends, and watch a restocker approach the shelf. If any actor pauses, turns around, clips furniture, or abandons the direct line, widen the aisle or clear its end.

Keep the widest turning areas at intersections, checkout approaches, refrigerator and freezer ends, and the storage doorway. A straight aisle can be relatively compact in its middle section, but its ends need room for turning. Avoid placing a decorative object, rack, or checkout terminal in that turning envelope.

Signs that an aisle is effectively too narrow

  • Restockers repeatedly stop at the same corner.
  • Customers enter an aisle and immediately reverse direction.
  • A checkout or scale queue spills into a product run.
  • You cannot carry a refill from storage without crossing a shelf end diagonally.
  • Adding one new facing forces several unrelated shelves to move.

Prevent restockers from getting stuck

Most restocking problems are route problems rather than a lack of shelf capacity. Keep the storage exit, perimeter route, and aisle ends free of temporary furniture. Place high-turnover shelves where the employee can approach from a straight segment, and avoid making a restocker cross a checkout or produce queue to reach ordinary stock.

When a worker appears stuck, identify the exact tile or corner where the route fails. Remove the nearest obstruction, widen that turn, and test the same delivery again. If the obstruction was created by a recently moved shelf, use the Snap/Grid System to realign the entire run instead of nudging one object out of line. After patch updates, inspect furniture that overlaps or clips; Patch 1.5.0 warned that existing furniture could require repositioning after the grid change.

When to expand the store

Expansion should solve a measured bottleneck, not compensate for an unorganized floor. Before buying a larger section, correct blocked aisles, repeated stockouts caused by poor shelf placement, and slow storage-to-shelf trips. The community guide emphasizes licenses and product variety as primary income-growth priorities and recommends expanding only when necessary.

Use an expansion tile for a complete module: a new parallel aisle, a dedicated cold run, or a larger produce-and-checkout approach. Avoid buying space merely to add isolated shelves. A planned module keeps categories readable and preserves the same perimeter route after growth.

Maintenance after patches and new unlocks

  1. Open the store after an update and inspect every grid-aligned run for overlap or clipping.
  2. Walk the storage-to-shelf routes for the fastest sellers.
  3. Check that scales still sit immediately before checkout and that their approach is not blocked.
  4. Review rack labels after adding a category or moving the computer.
  5. Recount facings for discounted products and remove temporary sale space when demand returns to normal.
  6. Reserve one open module for the next license instead of filling every gap.

Patch behavior can change furniture placement and movement, so a layout that worked before an update may need small corrections. Reassess based on observed traffic and replenishment rather than assuming the old arrangement remains optimal.

Pricing and inventory decisions that affect shelf placement

A 2025 Steam Community guide suggests pricing products 5%–7% above market price for minimal complaints. This is player guidance, not an official pricing rule, and it is separate from the physical layout decision. If a price change creates a sudden demand shift, respond by adjusting facings and storage position only after watching actual sales.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep one day’s normal stock accessible, but do not permanently devote half an aisle to a product that is popular only during a discount. Flexible shelf modules let you react without destroying category zoning.

A practical daily operating checklist

  • Walk the perimeter from entrance to checkout and confirm that no rack, queue, or decoration breaks the route.
  • Check produce stalls, the scale, and checkout approaches before opening.
  • Inspect sale items and other fast sellers for sufficient facings.
  • Verify that the storage exit and loading-to-door lane are clear.
  • Refill high-turnover shelves first, using the nearest labeled racks.
  • Watch one restocking cycle for repeated pauses at aisle ends.
  • Record which products sell out early and which retain stock at closing.
  • Make one layout adjustment at a time, then observe the next selling cycle.

What is and is not established by the available evidence

The developer’s Steam description establishes the game’s emphasis on optimizing efficiency and aesthetics, deciding where products are displayed, managing aisles, and maintaining a smooth shopping experience. The Snap/Grid System confirms that furniture can be aligned precisely and that grid size is customizable. Neither source publishes a guaranteed best blueprint, an exact aisle width, or a universal customer-path formula.

Community recommendations are therefore useful starting points, not certification of an optimum. The modular grid, category zoning, checkout-side produce, short storage routes, and post-patch inspections are robust planning principles; the 20-unit daily starting point, 100–200 sale-day volume, 82-rack storage benchmark, and 5%–7% pricing suggestion should all be validated against your store’s current version and observed results.
