For most groups, a managed game host that offers a Nitrox template is the easiest way to run a Subnautica multiplayer server. The host installs the server, exposes a control panel and usually handles routine restarts and updates. Self-hosting is the better fit when you need complete file access, already own an always-on machine and can configure networking yourself. No provider in the available evidence is independently established as “the best,” so choose by setup effort, control, location, price transparency and confirmed compatibility rather than by marketing slogans.
What you need before choosing a host
Nitrox is sensitive to version and network configuration. Prepare these items before paying for a plan or installing anything:
- A legitimately purchased PC copy of Subnautica on Steam is required for the server to obtain the game files, according to a community hosting guide. Do not assume a cracked or incomplete installation will work.
- Every player and the server should use a compatible Subnautica build and Nitrox release. The current release was not confirmed in the available information, so check the official project site immediately before installation.
- UDP port 11000 must be reachable from the internet when players connect directly. A router port-forwarding rule, or a VPN tool such as Hamachi, can provide that reachability.

A managed template removes routine setup, but it does not eliminate compatibility checks. Ask support which Nitrox build the template installs, how quickly it is updated and whether you can pin a version when a new release causes problems.

Managed Nitrox hosts to investigate
The following options appeared in provider material. Their feature and price statements are marketing claims, not independent uptime or performance measurements. Confirm the current terms, supported game build, refund policy and player limit before ordering.
BisectHosting
Its Nitrox offering is deployed through a Starbase control panel. The provider’s help material covers joining the server, setting passwords, managing administrators, selecting game mode and changing starting statistics. A multi-game plan is also advertised. The practical advantage is a guided panel rather than manual installation; verify whether the template tracks the Nitrox release you intend to run and whether file access is included on your chosen plan.

Setup is performed in GPanel, with the administrator password supplied through startup variables. The default password is a placeholder and must be replaced before inviting anyone. Treat that change as mandatory security work: a known default can let an unintended user obtain administrator access.

Its guidance emphasizes choosing a server location near the players to reduce latency. FTP/SFTP access is mentioned for configuration files, which is useful when you need to edit or back up files that a panel does not expose. Confirm the exact Nitrox template version and whether transfers are enabled on every plan tier.

Its sales material claims instant setup, 24/7 live chat, free DDoS protection, cross-platform play and automatic port forwarding. Those are unverified provider claims. Ask what “cross-platform” covers (Steam, Epic or Microsoft Store), whether automatic forwarding works with your router or carrier-grade NAT, and what DDoS protection limits apply.
How to compare plans without falling for ambiguous specifications
Confirm the real player limit
Player capacity can be expressed as a hard software limit, a provider policy or a performance recommendation. Request all three numbers. A listing that combines “unlimited slots” with “up to 10 players” demonstrates why a screenshot of a sales page is not enough.
Compare like-for-like memory allocations
Per-GB pricing is meaningful only when you know whether RAM is dedicated, burstable or shared. Ask whether the advertised amount is reserved for the Nitrox process, whether panels and backups consume it, and whether upgrades can be made without reinstalling the world.

Check location and routing
Choose the region nearest the players, not merely the cheapest region. If your group spans continents, select a central location and test latency from each player’s normal connection during the provider’s cancellation window.
Ask about files, backups and version control
- Is FTP or SFTP available, or can you only use panel controls?
- Can you download world and configuration files before an update?
- Can the server remain on an older Nitrox build while clients update?
- Are scheduled restarts and manual rollback supported?
- What happens to your files if a plan is cancelled or payment fails?
Separate support promises from measurable terms
“Instant setup,” “live chat” and “free DDoS protection” describe a service promise, not guaranteed latency or uptime. Look for a published status page, maintenance policy and response-time commitment. No independent uptime dataset was available for the providers listed above.

Self-hosting works when you can leave a machine online and administer its network. The steps below follow the official launcher workflow, with the network details that a home server requires.
- Install a legitimate Subnautica copy. Install the Steam edition on the server machine or otherwise make the licensed game files available as required by the Nitrox installer. Keep the game fully updated only after confirming that the target Nitrox release supports that build.
- Install the Nitrox launcher. Download it from the official project source and let it locate the Subnautica installation. If the launcher reports missing files, repair the Steam installation before troubleshooting networking.
- Start the server from the launcher. Use the server option rather than launching a client world. The official guide has the current menu labels; labels can change between Nitrox releases.
- Set the server identity. Enter a recognizable server name, create a non-obvious join password and set a separate administrator password or account. Never leave a placeholder credential in place.
- Reserve a local address. Give the server computer a DHCP reservation or static address on your router. A changing local address will invalidate a port-forward rule after a reboot.
- Forward UDP 11000. Create a router rule that maps external UDP port 11000 to UDP port 11000 on the server’s local address. Do not forward unrelated ports. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary forwarding may not work; use a VPN overlay or request a public address.
- Allow the executables through the firewall. Add inbound and outbound exceptions for the Nitrox launcher/server and the game components on the server operating system. A port rule alone is insufficient if the local firewall silently drops the process.
- Test from outside your home network. Have a friend connect using the public address while the server is running. Testing from the same Wi-Fi can succeed even when internet clients are blocked by the router’s lack of NAT loopback.
- Record recovery information. Keep the server name, port, configuration location, backup path and administrator credentials in a secure password manager. Back up the world before changing versions or mods.
Hardware and operating-system requirements
No official Nitrox hardware specification was identified. The figures below come from a community hosting guide and should be treated as a starting point, not a guarantee.

For a home server, wired Ethernet is preferable to Wi-Fi, and an uninterruptible power supply can prevent abrupt shutdowns from corrupting saves. Those are operational precautions rather than stated Nitrox requirements.
Docker and small computers
Container images can simplify repeatable deployment, but they are community projects rather than official Nitrox distributions. The cuteminded/nitrox-server image lists tested environments of Ubuntu 24.04 x64, macOS Tahoe ARM64, Windows 11 x64 and Raspberry Pi OS 13 (Trixie) ARM64. Its example publishes UDP port 11000. The project also reports a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4 GB of RAM and an external SSD among tested setups. These reports do not establish a universal minimum or guarantee performance with your player count.
A second image, qub1/nitrox-server, is listed on Docker Hub, but its details were not captured. Inspect its documentation, image age, exposed ports, update method and backup instructions before deploying it.
When using Docker, persist the world and configuration directories outside the container. Pin an image tag instead of silently tracking latest, publish only UDP 11000, and keep a copy of the previous image so you can roll back if a new Nitrox build changes compatibility.

Version matching and update strategy
Version mismatch is one of the most likely causes of a server that starts but refuses connections. The exact current Nitrox release was not confirmed in the available material; Docker metadata suggested 1.8.x but with low confidence. Do not treat that metadata as an authoritative release number.

- Check the official Nitrox release information and launcher before buying a template or downloading an image.
- Write down the Subnautica build and Nitrox version on the server and on every client.
- Update one component at a time, back up the world, then test with a single client.
- If a host auto-updates, ask whether updates can be paused or rolled back.
- After an update, verify that server name, password, administrator settings and port 11000 remain unchanged.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server does not appear or friends cannot connect
- Confirm the server process is running and listening on UDP 11000.
- Check that the router forwards UDP, not only TCP, to the correct local address.
- Review operating-system firewall exceptions for both the server executable and launcher.
- Test from a different internet connection. If outside clients fail but local clients work, suspect forwarding, carrier-grade NAT or the public address.
- Use a VPN overlay such as Hamachi when you cannot obtain a routable public address.
Clients report a version or handshake error
- Compare the exact Nitrox release and Subnautica build on every machine.
- Ask the host which template revision is installed; a panel may show a friendly name while running an older binary.
- Restore the last known-good server and client versions from backups rather than repeatedly changing both at once.
The server is unstable under load
- Watch memory and CPU while several players are active. The community figures are baselines, not capacity guarantees.
- Move the server closer to players or choose a better-routed data-center region if latency, rather than crashes, is the problem.
- Reduce background jobs, keep the world on fast storage and verify that the machine is not swapping.
- On a managed plan, request logs and ask whether the advertised RAM is dedicated.
An administrator account is compromised

- Check for FTP/SFTP, downloadable backups, scheduled restarts and rollback options.
- Calculate the recurring price from the actual RAM allocation; do not compare a per-GB quote with an unspecified flat plan.
- Change every default password before sharing the address.
- Test a complete join from an external network while you can still cancel.

Choose a managed Nitrox template when convenience and dependable 24/7 availability matter more than low-level control. Choose self-hosting when you already have an always-on machine, understand UDP forwarding and want unrestricted access to files and updates. In every case, verify the current Nitrox release, Subnautica build and UDP 11000 connectivity before committing money or migrating a world.
