Start with Modern Controls if your priority is landing combos with less memorization and fewer demanding motion inputs. Switch to Classic Controls when you want Street Fighter 6’s complete six-button layout and traditional inputs. Treat Dynamic Controls as an offline novelty rather than a competitive setting: Capcom restricts it to selected Fighting Ground modes and does not permit it online.
For clearer practice and troubleshooting, turn on Input History Display so you can see the exact buttons and directions the game received. Choose controls per character instead of forcing one scheme on the entire roster. There is no single, officially established brightness, motion-blur, graphics or latency preset that applies to every PC and console, so those visual settings must be tuned to your display and hardware.
The best SF6 setup at a glance
Street Fighter 6 does not have one universal “easy mode” configuration. The most useful setting depends on whether you need simpler execution, the full move set, or a casual offline demonstration. Use this decision table before changing anything:

Modern is the clearest first recommendation for “easier combos.” Classic is not a worse setting; it is the right choice when learning the complete traditional system matters more than reducing execution. Dynamic serves a different purpose and should not be confused with an online beginner control scheme.

What Modern Controls actually change
Modern Controls reduce the amount of memorization and hand movement needed for many actions. Capcom describes the type as allowing special attacks through simple button combinations, and its launch explanation says holding the Assist button while pressing attack buttons can produce simple combos. That gives a new player a practical route from neutral play to a repeatable combo without first mastering every quarter-circle, charge or dragon-punch motion.
Capcom Support states: “Modern Controls will allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations, designed for players who want to enjoy fighting without memorizing special move button combinations.” The statement is from “What are the control types in Street Fighter 6?”, updated July 20, 2026.
When Modern is the right choice
- You are still learning where attack buttons, Drive mechanics and character specials are located.
- You can recognize a combo but routinely drop it because the motion input is late or incomplete.
- You want to test a character’s game plan before investing time in traditional execution.
- You are choosing a character with a motion or charge requirement that currently blocks your progress.
What to expect from assisted combos
Modern’s Assist-based routes are a starting point, not a promise that every route is optimal in every situation. Use them to learn hit-confirm timing, spacing and when a move connects. Once you can reproduce a route consistently, compare it with the character’s available manual options and decide whether the extra damage, range or resource behavior is worth learning. The official material establishes the simplified inputs and assisted routes, but it does not publish a universal percentage for combo success or input-error reduction.

When Classic Controls are better
Classic Controls retain the full six-button layout and traditional motion-input structure associated with Street Fighter. Choose them if your goal is complete access to normal attacks, manual special commands and the established arcade-style control language. They demand more precise directions and timing, but that demand is part of the skill you are trying to build.
Choose Classic if you value completeness
- You want every normal attack available through the conventional punch-and-kick layout.
- You are transferring muscle memory from earlier Street Fighter games or another traditional fighting game.
- You prefer entering each command yourself instead of using an assisted route.
- You are willing to spend practice time on motion cleanliness, charge timing and button priority.
Classic is also useful when a Modern layout feels restrictive for a particular character. You can keep Modern for one character and Classic for another; the game supports a per-character preference rather than requiring one global choice.

Why Dynamic Controls are a separate case
Dynamic Controls are an AI-controlled auto-attack scheme for immediate, casual play. Capcom’s official web manual calls it: “This is an AI-controlled auto-attack control type.” You press basic directions or buttons and the game selects attacks for you instead of asking you to execute a normal command sequence.
Dynamic can help someone sample a character, show the game to a first-time player, or act immediately in a local session. It is not a replacement for Modern or Classic when you are trying to learn a character’s decisions. Capcom limits Dynamic to certain Fighting Ground modes and does not allow it in online matches, so do not build an online practice plan around it.
How to change your control type and mappings
Use the following menu paths rather than searching through every submenu:
- Open Multi Menu > Options > Controls to configure battle controls.
- For button assignments and battle-control mappings, open Options > Battle.
- In Battle Settings, open the Character tab and select the preferred control type for each character.
- If you want the same choice applied broadly, use the edit-character screen’s option to apply the selected control type to all characters, then return to the Character tab and change exceptions individually.
- Enter Training and enable Input History Display in the training display options before diagnosing a missed command.
Menu labels can vary slightly by platform or language, but the Options, Battle and Character locations above are the documented route. Confirm the selected character before testing: changing a global preference and then loading a character with a per-character override can otherwise make it appear that the setting did not save.
Use Input History Display to fix missed combos
Input History Display is the most useful diagnostic aid for execution problems. It provides a live feed of the buttons and directions the game received, letting you distinguish a bad idea from a bad input. PlayStation describes the feature as a display of button presses; in practice, read it as the game’s record of your command sequence.

A practical diagnosis routine
- Turn on Input History Display in Training.
- Stand at the distance where the combo normally starts and perform the first attack once.
- Check whether the expected direction appears in the feed. A missing direction means the problem occurred before the attack button, not after it.
- Repeat slowly, separating the direction and button enough to see each entry, then gradually restore the intended speed.
- Record whether the attack itself connects. If the input is correct but the move does not reach, adjust spacing or timing instead of changing controls.
- After the sequence works three times slowly, test it at normal speed and from both sides of the screen.
Common Input History patterns

This process prevents a common mistake: changing graphics or buying a different controller when the history shows that the game received a different command than the one you intended.
Make combos easier with a repeatable practice plan
1. Start with one reliable route
Choose a short combo that begins from a normal attack you can land in a real match. On Modern, begin with the character’s assisted route. On Classic, choose a simple confirm that uses one special motion rather than trying to learn the longest damage sequence first.
2. Separate recognition from execution
Practice the attack by itself, then practice the special or follow-up by itself, and only then join them. Input History Display tells you whether the failure is a missing command or a late cancel. This separation makes each repetition informative instead of repeating an entire sequence without knowing which part failed.
3. Add both sides and different starting distances
Many players can perform a motion on one side and fail when the character faces the opposite direction. Test left-facing and right-facing versions, then move the opponent one step farther away. A route that works only at point-blank range is not yet a dependable match tool.
4. Add a decision after the first hit
Once the mechanical route is stable, practice confirming whether the first attack connected before committing to the rest. The control type can simplify execution, but it cannot decide when an attack is safe or whether the opponent blocked.

5. Review replays with the same diagnostic mindset
When a combo fails in a match, identify the exact moment: wrong button, incomplete direction, premature cancel, bad spacing or a decision to attack when blocking was better. Input History Display in practice helps you reproduce the mechanical part; replay review supplies the context.
Per-character settings are more useful than one global rule
Street Fighter 6 lets you choose a preferred control type on the Character tab in Battle Settings, so use that flexibility deliberately. A character whose specials are currently blocking your progress can stay on Modern while a character whose normal-attack layout you already know remains on Classic.
A sensible mixed roster setup
- Modern main: use it for a new character while you learn neutral tools, anti-airs and a small set of confirms.
- Classic main: use it where full six-button access and traditional motions are central to how you want to play.
- Experiment slot: switch a character temporarily to the other type to understand which execution barrier is actually costing you rounds.
Do not switch control types in the middle of a serious practice block without noting the change. Muscle memory is layout-specific; a correct command on one scheme can be a different attack on another.

The documented, broadly useful clarity setting is Input History Display during training and replay analysis. It exposes the command sequence and helps separate an execution error from a spacing or timing error.

Platform-neutral visual checks
- Use a brightness level at which you can distinguish the stage background from character silhouettes without washing out effects.
- If motion blur makes attacks harder for you to track, test the game with it disabled; if your display handles motion differently, compare both settings in the same training stage.
- Keep the same display setup while comparing settings so your judgment is not confounded by a different television mode or monitor profile.
- Judge responsiveness in Training and ordinary matches, not from a claimed universal latency number that the official material does not provide.
These are testing guidelines, not a published one-size-fits-all preset. The control recommendations remain valid regardless of whether you play on PC or console.
A beginner setup you can apply in one session
- Open Multi Menu > Options > Controls.
- Open Options > Battle and inspect the current mappings.
- In Battle Settings > Character, select Modern for the character you are learning.
- Enter Training and enable Input History Display.
- Learn one assisted combo, one anti-air response and one safe way to approach. Keep the list short enough to repeat accurately.
- Use the history feed to correct missing or out-of-order inputs before adding a second combo.
- After several consistent sessions, try the same character on Classic if you want the full six-button and traditional-motion toolkit.
- Leave Dynamic for a local, offline demonstration or casual Fighting Ground session; do not expect it to be available in an online lobby.
Troubleshooting control and combo problems
“Modern did not make my combo work.”
Modern lowers execution demands; it does not remove timing, spacing or hit-confirm requirements. Verify that the selected character is actually using Modern, watch Input History Display for the command the game received, and test the route from the correct distance.
“My controls changed after I switched characters.”
Check the Character tab in Battle Settings. Control type can be set per character, so a character-specific choice may override the broad setting you expected.

That behavior is intentional. Dynamic is restricted to certain Fighting Ground modes and is not permitted for online play. Use Modern for the lowest-execution online option.
“The combo works on one side but not the other.”
Practice the mirrored motion separately and inspect the history feed for the reversed direction sequence. Do not assume that a successful left-facing repetition proves the right-facing motion is clean.
“The game looks hard to read.”
Adjust display preferences on your own hardware and compare them in the same stage. The official documentation does not specify a universal brightness, blur or latency preset, so avoid treating another player’s values as guaranteed improvements for your setup.
Modern versus Classic: the final decision
Pick Modern when the immediate goal is easier combos, faster access to special moves and a lower execution barrier. Pick Classic when learning the complete six-button system and traditional motion inputs is itself the goal. You do not lose the ability to change your mind: assign the type per character, use Input History Display to identify the exact source of mistakes, and move to Classic when the limitations of a streamlined layout—not the difficulty of the game’s decisions—become the thing holding you back.
