There is no single best streaming service for every U.S. household in 2026. HBO Max is the strongest all-around library choice in Tom’s Guide’s August and September 2026 comparisons, Peacock is its value pick, Sling TV is the live-TV choice, and Hulu is the cord-cutter choice. Your best value still depends on the shows, sports, channels, video quality, simultaneous streams and monthly limit you actually need.
How to choose a streaming service in 2026
Compare the specific plan, not just the app’s name. Two tiers from the same service can differ in advertising, picture quality, downloads, simultaneous streams and price. Regional rights also determine whether a particular movie, series or sports event is available where you live.
- Library fit: List the programs your household will watch this month, then check which service carries them.
- Live channels and sports: A subscription library is not a replacement for a live-TV service when you need local broadcasts, news or sports rights.
- Ad tolerance: The cheapest tier may include commercial breaks. Confirm whether an ad-free option also changes downloads or stream limits.
- Household use: Check the number of permitted simultaneous streams and whether everyone can use the service from your location.
- Total cost: Include taxes, bundle charges and any subscription you keep year-round rather than canceling after a show ends.
Editorial picks from the 2026 comparisons
Tom’s Guide’s comparison, updated August 20, 2026, evaluates major streaming services and cable alternatives by content, live-TV options, features and usability. Its September 6 report card again names HBO Max its overall recommendation, but these are editorial judgments rather than universal rankings.
HBO Max: best overall library pick
The service combines HBO originals, Warner Bros. films and other programming. It suits households that prioritize premium scripted series and major studio movies over a broad live-channel lineup. Confirm the current catalog, regional rights and the exact tier before subscribing.

Peacock: best value-oriented choice
Tom’s Guide highlights classic shows, sports and next-day episodes from NBC and Bravo. It can be a practical low-cost complement to another service when those specific programs matter, although its value depends on which events and episodes are available in your market.
Sling TV: best for live-TV replacement
Sling TV is positioned as a cable alternative with live channels. It is more relevant than an on-demand service when you need scheduled news, sports or entertainment networks. Channel packages and local availability vary, so check your ZIP code and the exact package.

Apple TV announced an increase to $14.99 on August 29, 2026, after the report card used $12.99. Recheck every price on the provider’s checkout page before paying. Disney+ and Hulu also announced new U.S. subscription prices effective September 23, 2026; some existing subscribers’ changes began on or after October 21, 2026. The available announcement summaries do not establish a complete plan-by-plan price table.
Bundles: useful, but not interchangeable
The Hulu Help Center describes a bundle combining Disney+, Hulu and HBO Max with two plan options. A bundle does not make the three apps operate under identical rules. The services can have different simultaneous-stream allowances, video quality, geographic restrictions, download availability and other functionality. Compare the included tiers with your actual devices and viewing habits, and calculate the bundle’s total against separate subscriptions.

Do you need a new streaming device?
Probably not if your smart TV, game console or existing player already supports the required apps. The 2026 comparison guide lists Fire TV as a supported platform for HBO Max, Peacock, Hulu and Sling TV. An Amazon Fire TV Stick can therefore be a practical optional solution for a television that lacks those apps, but the evidence does not establish that a particular model is required or that every TV needs one. Check the app store for your exact TV model first.

- Write down the services your household watched in the previous 30 days.
- Cancel services with no specific program or event planned.
- Use one service for a month, finish the priority series, then rotate to another.
- Recalculate bundles after any price-change notice; a discount can disappear when a tier changes.
- Set a household ceiling. In Tom’s Guide’s June 2026 survey, more than 35% of respondents said they paid over $60 per month for streaming. That describes that survey’s respondents, not all U.S. households.
