Choose StreamElements if you want a browser-based overlay editor with a single browser-source integration and room for custom widgets. Choose Streamlabs if you already produce your stream in OBS and want Streamlabs widgets and overlays inside that workflow. The right fit depends on your broadcast software, operating system, customization needs, and which features are included in the plan you intend to use—not on a proven performance or engagement advantage.
What a YouTube streaming overlay does
An overlay is a visual layer on top of your broadcast. It can include alerts, labels, goals, chat, and other widgets. The overlay tool creates or supplies those elements; your broadcast software displays them as part of the stream. That makes your existing production workflow a useful starting point for choosing a tool.
How the two overlay workflows compare
| Tool | Workflow | Customization | Compatibility and plan points | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| StreamElements | Compose an overlay in its Overlay Editor, then render it in broadcast software through one browser source. | No-code setup is available; developers can code custom widgets when built-in options are insufficient. StreamElements currently advertises customizable alerts and widgets as free. | Check that the specific widgets and integrations you need are supported. The free claim is the vendor’s current offer, not an independent guarantee. | Creators who want a browser-based editor and a single-source integration, with the option to customize widget code. |
| Streamlabs OBS plugin | Add Streamlabs overlays, widgets, alerts, and other Streamlabs tools to OBS. Streamlabs distinguishes this plugin from its all-in-one desktop software. | Provides Streamlabs features within an OBS workflow; the reviewed plugin page does not establish a comparable custom-code workflow. | Streamlabs says the plugin is free to download and use. Some premium overlays and server-side multistreaming require Ultra. The plugin page currently identifies Windows as supported. | Creators already using OBS who want Streamlabs tools integrated into that setup. |
These are different workflows rather than a universal ranking. StreamElements is the clearer match when browser-source setup and widget customization matter; Streamlabs is the clearer match when you want its tools within OBS. Neither reviewed vendor source establishes that one gives better stream quality, uses fewer computer resources, or increases engagement. Feature availability, plan limits, and operating-system support can change, so confirm the current details with the vendor before committing to a setup.
Choose based on your broadcast setup
If you want a browser-source overlay
Start with StreamElements. Its documented workflow is to compose the elements in the Overlay Editor and add the result to your broadcast software as a single browser source. This keeps overlay composition separate from the software that handles your scenes and broadcast. Begin with its no-code tools; custom widget code is an option if the built-in elements do not meet your needs.
#1 Best Overall
If you already use OBS and want Streamlabs tools
Consider the Streamlabs OBS plugin. Its purpose is to bring Streamlabs overlays, widgets, alerts, and other tools into OBS. Check that your computer runs Windows, the operating system the plugin page currently lists as supported, and verify whether any overlay or multistreaming feature you want is part of Ultra. Do not confuse the OBS plugin with Streamlabs Desktop: the vendor describes them as separate products.
If you need custom behavior
First check whether a built-in widget can do the job. StreamElements documents a no-code starting path as well as custom widget development for creators who need behavior beyond its built-in options. The reviewed Streamlabs plugin source establishes the plugin’s integration with Streamlabs tools, but does not establish an equivalent custom-code capability. That is a reason to verify requirements before choosing, not proof that a particular custom feature is unavailable.

Set up the overlay in the workflow you choose
StreamElements
- Build the visual composition in the StreamElements Overlay Editor. Add only the elements you need, such as alerts, labels, goals, chat, or widgets.
- Use the editor’s no-code options first. If a built-in widget cannot meet a specific requirement, assess whether a custom widget is appropriate.
- In your broadcast software, add the overlay as a browser source. StreamElements documents the overlay as rendering through one browser source.
- Check the elements and integrations you intend to use, and verify that the overlay appears correctly in your broadcast workflow before going live.
Streamlabs with OBS
- Confirm that your operating system is Windows, which Streamlabs currently lists as supported for the OBS plugin.
- Install and use the Streamlabs OBS plugin to bring Streamlabs overlays, widgets, alerts, and other tools into OBS. The plugin is distinct from Streamlabs Desktop.
- Check the plan requirement for each feature you want. Streamlabs says the plugin itself is free, while some premium overlays and server-side multistreaming require Ultra.
- Confirm the current plugin compatibility and feature terms with Streamlabs before building your production around them.
Keep the overlay separate from production controls
A programmable controller such as Elgato Stream Deck is an optional way to trigger broadcast-software actions, including scene changes. It is a control accessory, not overlay-creation software, and it is not required to use either overlay workflow. A 2022 peer-reviewed study by Ian Drosos and Philip J. Guo examined 40 YouTube setup videos to analyze streaming production tools; that is the study’s sample, not a current estimate of the market or of how common any tool is.

If your goal is an always-on prerecorded YouTube channel
An overlay editor is for broadcast visuals; it does not keep a prerecorded video running continuously by itself. If you instead want uploaded videos to loop as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and your computer does not have to stay on.
- StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home.
- It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot.
- It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo plans, or start your free day.
