Google TV Streamer (4K) is the most direct replacement for a Chromecast with Google TV if you want to keep Google’s interface and account environment. It is a small HDMI-connected box, not a dongle. Choose Roku Streaming Stick 4K for a comparable stick shape and Roku’s interface, an explicitly named Fire TV Stick generation for an Alexa-centered setup, or Apple TV 4K for a premium Apple-oriented home with strong format support and an Ethernet option. The right choice depends on ecosystem, placement, HDR and audio requirements, networking, and budget—not the 4K label alone.
Specifications below reflect manufacturer information checked on October 13, 2026. Retail prices, stock, model names, and regional app catalogs change, so verify the exact model and local listing before ordering.
Quick answer: which Chromecast replacement should you buy?
| Best for | Pick | Why it fits | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keeping Google TV | Google TV Streamer (4K) | Continues the Google TV experience in a box form factor and has 4 GB of RAM according to Google’s comparison. | It is not the old compact HDMI dongle; check the space around your TV and power outlet. |
| A stick-shaped alternative | Roku Streaming Stick 4K | Plugs into an HDMI port and supports 4K, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+ when the TV and content are compatible. | Its interface and account ecosystem are Roku’s rather than Google’s. |
| Alexa and Amazon services | Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025), or another precisely identified Fire TV model | Fire TV offers several generations, including a 2025 4K Plus model; Amazon’s specifications identify Wi-Fi 6 on the Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen). | “Fire Stick” is not a sufficient model name. Features differ by generation and country. |
| Apple-focused households | Apple TV 4K | A15 Bionic chip, Wi-Fi 6, broad HDR support, Dolby Atmos, and a Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration with Gigabit Ethernet. | It costs more in many markets, uses Apple’s ecosystem, and Apple says the HDMI cable is sold separately. |
What matters when replacing Chromecast with Google TV
A replacement has to solve two different problems: putting streaming apps on the television and preserving the way you browse, cast, sign in, and connect other devices. No alternative reproduces every detail of another platform. Decide which of the following matters most before comparing specifications.

Interface and account ecosystem
Google TV Streamer is the continuity choice. It keeps Google’s TV-oriented interface and is the least disruptive option for someone already comfortable with Google accounts and recommendations. Roku has its own home screen and channel model. Fire TV is built around Amazon’s interface and Alexa environment. Apple TV 4K is designed for Apple services, Apple accounts, and Apple devices.

- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
App availability is country-specific. A service that appears on a manufacturer’s US page may have a different name, catalog, or availability elsewhere. Check the apps you actually pay for in your country before switching platforms; do not assume that a familiar Chromecast app or casting workflow behaves identically on every replacement.
Stick versus box
Roku Streaming Stick 4K and Fire TV Stick models are stick-style players that sit behind or beside the television and connect directly to HDMI. Google TV Streamer is a set-top-box-style device that connects by HDMI and normally rests on a shelf. Apple TV 4K is also a box and provides more room for wired networking and ports than a typical stick.
Measure the clearance behind the TV, identify an available HDMI input, and make sure the supplied power cable can reach an outlet. A crowded wall-mounted installation may favor a stick; a shelf with an Ethernet run may favor a box.

Resolution is only one part of picture quality
“4K” describes a maximum resolution, not a guarantee that every service will deliver 4K or that HDR will look better on your television. The display, HDMI path, subscription tier, streaming title, network connection, and chosen device all have to support the desired mode. HDR formats also differ: Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG are not interchangeable labels.

Networking and placement
All four options can use wireless networking, but the standard and wired choices vary by model. Apple lists Wi-Fi 6 on both Apple TV 4K configurations and Gigabit Ethernet on the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model. The Roku and Fire TV pages identify the relevant models and compatibility, but you should confirm the wireless standard and power arrangement for the exact version you buy. If your television is far from the router, behind dense furniture, or in a congested apartment network, a wired port or better placement can matter more than a nominal resolution upgrade.
Google TV Streamer (4K): the closest platform replacement
Choose Google TV Streamer (4K) when your priority is continuity with Google’s television interface rather than preserving the old dongle shape. Google describes it as working with any TV or display that has HDMI, even when the display resolution differs from the device. Google recommends a 4K television for the best experience, but an HDMI display with another resolution can still be used.
What changes from Chromecast with Google TV
The physical design is the most obvious change: Google TV Streamer is a box rather than the small Chromecast dongle. That can make cable management and shelf placement easier, but it takes more visible space. Treat older accessories and casting behaviors as use-case-specific; confirm the exact feature you depend on instead of assuming every Chromecast workflow transfers unchanged.

Documented memory difference
Google’s current support comparison lists 4 GB of RAM for Google TV Streamer (4K), compared with 2 GB for Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and 1.5 GB for the HD model. Those are manufacturer specifications, not an independent speed test. They establish a hardware difference, but they do not prove a particular loading time, frame rate, or subjective performance advantage.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Who should select it
- Households that prefer Google TV’s recommendations and navigation.
- People who want the least disruptive account and interface transition from Chromecast with Google TV.
- Viewers whose television has HDMI but is not necessarily 4K; the device can connect to a different-resolution display.
- Buyers comfortable with a box form factor and a separate power connection.
Roku Streaming Stick 4K: the straightforward stick alternative
Roku Streaming Stick 4K is the natural candidate if you want the compact stick shape and are willing to move to Roku’s interface. Roku states that it works with any TV that has HDMI. The stick approach is convenient behind a wall-mounted television and avoids placing a box on a shelf.
Picture formats and their conditions
Roku identifies support for 4K, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+. Its compatibility caveat is important: playback of those formats requires compatible TV hardware and compatible content. A 4K television that lacks Dolby Vision, a title mastered only in HDR10, or a subscription that supplies HD video will not be upgraded by the stick itself.
Services and the Roku interface
Roku describes free entertainment on The Roku Channel and the option to add subscription or live-TV services. Catalogs and availability vary by market, and “free” does not mean every program or service is included. Review the local lineup and the subscriptions you already use before treating a platform change as cost-neutral.

- People who prefer a simple HDMI installation and do not need built-in wired Ethernet.
Fire TV Stick: identify the generation before you buy
“Fire Stick” describes a family, not one fixed specification. Amazon’s official device-specifications page lists the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025), while its specifications also identify Wi-Fi 6 support on the Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen). These are different model names and should not be treated as interchangeable.

How to compare Fire TV listings
- Read the complete product name, including “4K Plus (2025),” “4K (2nd Gen),” or another generation marker.
- Confirm that the listing is for your country; names, bundles, and availability can differ by region.
- Check the stated wireless standard, supported video and audio formats, included remote, and power accessories for that exact model.
- Match the model’s HDMI and power requirements to the television before ordering.
The available specifications establish product identity and selected capabilities, but they do not establish that one Fire TV generation is faster or better value than another. Avoid relying on a seller’s shortened “Fire Stick 4K” label when two generations are available.
Who should select Fire TV
- Households already comfortable with Amazon’s interface, Alexa, or Fire TV accounts.
- Buyers who are willing to compare generations carefully rather than selecting by the family name alone.
- Viewers whose preferred apps and live-TV services are confirmed for their country and the selected Fire TV model.
Apple TV 4K: the premium Apple-oriented option
Apple TV 4K is the strongest fit for a household centered on Apple devices and services, or for someone who wants a box with an Ethernet configuration. Apple’s current specifications list an A15 Bionic chip, HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.0.
Storage and networking configurations
| Configuration | Storage listed by Apple | Networking |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi model | 64 GB | Wi-Fi 6 |
| Wi-Fi + Ethernet model | 128 GB | Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit Ethernet, and Thread networking |
The 64 GB and 128 GB figures are capacities, not a claim that either model is faster. Select the Ethernet version when a stable wired connection or Thread networking is worth the additional hardware; otherwise the Wi-Fi model may be sufficient.

Apple lists SDR video up to 2160p/60, Dolby Vision up to 2160p/60, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG. It also lists Dolby Atmos. Apple says a 4K/HDR television is required for 4K/HDR streaming, so the device cannot create HDR on a display that does not support it. The HDMI cable is sold separately, which is an easy setup cost to miss.

- Installations where Gigabit Ethernet is preferable to wireless.
- Users who want 64 GB or 128 GB of listed storage and accept a box form factor.
Format and hardware comparison
| Device | Form factor | Resolution and HDR information | Audio information | Networking or hardware notes |

| Apple TV 4K | HDMI-connected box | SDR up to 2160p/60; Dolby Vision up to 2160p/60; HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG. | Dolby Atmos listed by Apple. | A15 Bionic, HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0; 128 GB Ethernet model adds Gigabit Ethernet and Thread. |
How to choose in five steps
- Choose the ecosystem. Stay with Google TV for the least disruptive interface change; select Roku, Fire TV, or Apple TV only if you are comfortable with that platform’s accounts, recommendations, and app layout.
- Choose the physical form. Select a stick when the player must hide behind the television. Select a box when shelf placement, easier access, or wired networking is more important.
- Check the television. Confirm an unused HDMI input, the panel’s maximum resolution, and whether it supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, or HLG. Do not pay for an HDR mode your television cannot display.
- Check the network. Measure wireless reliability where the television sits. If the router is nearby and wireless is stable, Wi-Fi may be enough. If not, Apple’s Wi-Fi + Ethernet model is the clearly documented wired option in this comparison; verify networking for every other exact model.
- Check the complete model listing and total setup cost. Include the correct remote, power supply, regional availability, and—if choosing Apple TV 4K—a suitable HDMI cable, which Apple says is sold separately. Prices and stock are volatile, so compare current local listings rather than relying on an old ranking.
Installation checklist
- Television with an available HDMI input.
- Power outlet close enough for the player’s adapter or cable.
- Home Wi-Fi credentials, or an Ethernet cable for the Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi + Ethernet model.
- A current account for the selected platform: Google, Roku, Amazon, or Apple.
- Subscriptions for the services you intend to watch; the device does not replace those subscriptions.
- For 4K or HDR, a compatible television, HDMI path, network connection, title, and service plan.
- For Apple TV 4K, an HDMI cable because Apple lists it as sold separately.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by “4K” alone
A 4K badge does not establish Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, Ethernet, or the right app catalog. Match every format to the television and the content you actually watch.
Assuming every Fire TV Stick is the same
Generation names matter. Compare the complete model title and the specification page for your country; do not treat Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025) and Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen) as one product.
Expecting RAM numbers to predict everyday speed
Google’s 4 GB, 2 GB, and 1.5 GB figures document hardware configurations. They are not independent measurements of launch time, scrolling smoothness, or app performance.
Expecting an old Chromecast workflow to transfer perfectly
Google TV Streamer is the continuity choice, but accessories and individual casting behaviors should be checked for the particular task. Roku, Fire TV, and Apple TV use different interfaces and account systems.
Forgetting regional availability
Apps, channels, live-TV services, bundles, and even model names can vary by country. Verify local availability before replacing a device that currently supports a service you need.
Ignoring placement and cable requirements
A box needs a suitable surface, while a stick needs clearance around the HDMI port. Apple TV 4K also requires a separately purchased HDMI cable according to Apple’s specifications.
Bottom line
Buy Google TV Streamer (4K) when preserving Google TV matters more than preserving the old dongle shape. Buy Roku Streaming Stick 4K when you want a stick and accept Roku’s ecosystem. Choose a specifically identified Fire TV generation for an Amazon and Alexa-centered home, checking every model suffix. Choose Apple TV 4K when Apple integration, documented HDR and Dolby Atmos support, storage, or Gigabit Ethernet justify a premium box. In every case, verify the exact generation, local app availability, television compatibility, network conditions, and current price before checkout.
