Buying a new streaming device is not a guaranteed cure for crashing apps. A crash can come from the app itself, the player’s software, low storage, background processes, or an unreliable network. Troubleshoot the current platform first; replace hardware only when the problem is platform-wide, the built-in software is no longer usable, or a different app ecosystem fits your services better.
The most defensible choices are therefore compatibility-led: Apple TV 4K when its supported services and Apple ecosystem fit, Roku Ultra when you prefer Roku’s interface and diagnostics, and a Fire TV Stick model when its apps, controls and support window suit you. No official source establishes a lower crash rate for any of them.
Identify what is actually crashing
Write down the symptom before changing hardware. “One app closes immediately” points to a different fix from “every app fails to open” or “video stops during playback.” Test two or three unrelated services and note whether the failure happens at launch, after sign-in, or only during streaming.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Also note whether the problem began after an app update, a player update, a password change, a router change, or a period when the device was nearly full. That short timeline helps separate a local software problem from an account, service, storage or network problem. Record the exact device model and software version as well; a product family can contain generations with different support periods.

Only one app fails
Update that app, restart the player, and install it again if necessary. If other services work, the app or its account service is the leading suspect. Google advises updating apps, force-stopping the affected app and contacting its developer when the problem remains; its help page is specifically for an app that crashes while using Google TV (Google TV Help).
Try a second title and, if possible, a different profile in the same service. If only one account or one title fails, do not assume the streamer is defective. A service outage, account entitlement or corrupted local session can look like a hardware fault. Reinstalling may sign you out, so have the service credentials and any two-factor device ready.
Several apps fail, but menus work
Check the internet connection and available storage, then restart the device. A common platform or network condition is more likely than simultaneous bugs in unrelated apps. If every app reports a network error but menus respond normally, test another network before buying anything. If apps launch but updates fail, low free space can be as important as connectivity.
The device itself freezes or reboots
Look for a system-software update, disconnect unnecessary USB or network equipment, and perform the platform’s least destructive restart. If the failure returns across multiple apps after a clean restart and update, a replacement becomes more reasonable. Keep notes on how often the freeze occurs and whether it happens only during demanding playback; those details are useful if you contact platform support.
Playback fails while apps open normally
Test another title and another service. Buffering, quality drops or playback errors usually require network diagnosis rather than a new player. A weak Wi-Fi signal or an internet-provider problem can also prevent an app from opening, according to Roku’s support guidance. A temporary hotspot or another access point is a useful diagnostic comparison, not a permanent recommendation: if playback succeeds there, investigate the home network first.
Try these fixes before buying anything
- Restart the player. Use the on-screen restart command or unplug it briefly if the menu is unresponsive. Roku calls a system restart “the least invasive reset method” and says it will not affect settings (Roku Support). Give the device enough time to complete the restart before judging the result.
- Update the affected app. An app update can replace a corrupted or incompatible build. Recheck the app after the update rather than testing only the home screen. If an update will not install, check storage and network status first.
- Force-stop or close the app. Google’s documented Google TV sequence includes force-stopping the problem app. Reopen it after the stop has completed. This is less disruptive than resetting the entire player.
- Clear cache and data where the platform offers those controls. On Fire TV, Amazon says to clear the app cache and data or restart the device when a downloaded app is not working as expected (Amazon Customer Service). Clearing data normally signs you out, so have your credentials available. Cache clearing and data clearing are separate controls; data clearing removes more local state.
- Uninstall and reinstall. This removes the local app package and downloads a fresh copy. It does not fix an outage or an app that no longer supports the device. Test the newly installed app before restoring every optional setting.
- Check free storage. Remove unused apps when storage is tight. Roku identifies low storage as a possible cause of “Can’t run app” and “Insufficient memory” messages. Leave room for both app packages and future system updates instead of filling the device immediately.
- Check the connection. Run the platform’s network test, restart the router if appropriate, and try the player on a stronger connection. If every device in the home is slow, contact the internet provider rather than replacing the streamer. A connection test should be repeated at the time the crash occurs, because an earlier successful test does not rule out intermittent trouble.
- Install the player’s system update. Firmware can contain compatibility and security fixes. Record the exact model before deciding whether its support window is still suitable. Do not infer that an update date for one model applies to another generation.
- Retest in a controlled order. After each change, launch the same app, open a second service, and play a title for long enough to reproduce the original symptom. Changing several variables at once makes it impossible to know which step helped.
Platform-specific troubleshooting
Roku
For “Can’t run app” or “Insufficient memory,” Roku lists internet problems and low storage among the possible causes. Start with a system restart, then remove apps you no longer use and check the network. The restart preserves settings; a factory reset is a much more disruptive step and should not be the first response. Roku’s article was last updated September 6, 2026, so menu wording can change as software evolves (Roku’s current instructions).
If removing one or two unused apps restores the affected service, treat that as a storage diagnosis rather than evidence that a new premium player will never crash. If a stronger connection fixes the issue, resolve Wi-Fi placement or provider trouble before changing hardware. Capture the on-screen error wording; “Can’t run app” and “Insufficient memory” point support toward different checks.

Google TV
Google’s official sequence is to update apps, force-stop the app that crashes and, if the issue persists, contact that app’s developer. That last step matters when only one service is affected: the platform manufacturer may not control the app’s code or account system (Google TV Help).
Use the same one-app-versus-many-apps test on a Google TV device. If several services fail after their updates and a restart, check the device connection and system software before blaming a single developer. When contacting a developer, include the app version, device model, operating-system version, exact crash point and whether another account reproduces it.
Fire TV
Amazon recommends restarting, clearing cache and data, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, and checking for a Fire TV software update. The cited support page is the UK version, so labels, account flows and local support details can differ in other countries (Amazon Customer Service).
Because clearing data can remove local sign-in information, plan the order: restart first, then clear cache, then clear data or reinstall if needed. Check whether the problem affects one download or multiple apps after each step. A fresh install cannot overcome an app outage, a missing regional listing or a device that no longer meets the app’s requirements.

Apple’s product page establishes the services available in its ecosystem, but the material here does not provide a comparative crash-rate test or a platform-specific repair sequence. Use Apple’s current on-device update, restart and app-management controls, and verify that the exact services you need are offered in your country before purchasing.
If an app behaves identically on Apple TV and the television’s built-in platform, compare the network and account before assuming both players have the same hardware defect. Keep the Apple device’s model and software version with your purchase records so future support questions are precise.
When a separate streaming player is a sensible fix
An external player can bypass a television’s outdated or unstable built-in platform. It does not repair the TV’s software and does not guarantee that the same app will be crash-free elsewhere. The case for buying one is strongest when:

- multiple unrelated apps fail on the TV after updates, restart and network checks;
- the TV’s platform no longer receives the app or system updates your services require;
- your must-have services are available on another platform in your country;
- you want a consistent interface across televisions; or
- the TV is in a location where replacing the whole television is impractical.
Keep the original TV platform available during setup. If the same service crashes on both platforms, the account, service outage or network is more likely than either player. Buying a player adds hardware cost and setup time, so it is sensible only when it solves a diagnosed platform or compatibility problem. If the current device works after a restart or reinstall, keeping it is the lower-cost and lower-disruption choice.
Current device options, without an unsupported reliability ranking
| Option | What is established | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K | Apple lists Disney+, Prime Video, Netflix, HBO Max, ESPN and other major services, plus thousands of additional apps in its App Store (Apple TV 4K). | Households already using Apple devices that want Apple’s interface and app ecosystem. | The page demonstrates app breadth, not universal availability in every region or a lower crash rate. |
| Roku Ultra | Roku provides documented diagnostics for app-opening errors, storage and connectivity problems (Roku Support). | Viewers who prefer Roku navigation and want straightforward restart, storage and network checks. | No comparative crash-frequency statistic or reliability ranking is established here. |
| Amazon Fire TV Stick family | Amazon documents restart, cache/data clearing, reinstall and software-update procedures (Amazon Customer Service). | Users whose required services are available on Fire TV and who are comfortable managing app data. | The cited troubleshooting page is UK-specific; verify local menus and app availability. |
| Another Google TV-based player | Google documents app updates, force-stop and developer-support steps for crashing apps (Google TV Help). | Viewers who rely on Google’s app and account environment. | The available evidence does not identify a specific model that is less crash-prone. |
More storage, a higher price or a premium badge should not be treated as proof of fewer crashes. Choose by service compatibility, platform controls, network position and support information for the exact model. The least expensive device that supports every required service can be a better decision than a more expensive model whose platform does not offer one essential app.
Verify app and regional compatibility before checkout
- List must-have services. Include live-TV services, sports, children’s apps and any regional broadcaster you actually use. Separate essential services from nice-to-have apps.
- Check the service’s country availability. An app listed on a manufacturer’s global page may not be downloadable in your store region. Apple’s list of major services demonstrates breadth, not universal availability in every country.
- Confirm the exact model. A product family can contain generations with different software support and app requirements. Save the model number from the retailer listing and compare it with the manufacturer’s support page.
- Check sign-in and subscription requirements. Some services require a separate subscription, and a reinstall may require two-factor authentication. A device cannot replace a missing subscription or regional entitlement.
- Plan the network connection. Place the player where Wi-Fi is reliable, or use a supported wired option if your diagnosis points to wireless instability. If network tests fail on several household devices, address the connection first.
- Check platform controls. Prefer a platform that lets you update, force-stop, clear data or reinstall in a way you are comfortable managing. Those controls help recovery, but they do not guarantee fewer future crashes.
- Confirm return and support details. Keep purchase documentation and verify the manufacturer’s support route for your country. A regional support page may show different menu labels or contact options.
Read support dates narrowly
Amazon publishes security-update dates by Fire TV model. Its list includes many Fire TV Stick models through December 31, 2030; the Fire TV Stick 4K (1st Generation) is listed through December 31, 2029 (Amazon’s Fire TV update information). These are security-update dates, not promises that a device will last that long, continue running every app, or receive identical features worldwide. Amazon explicitly warns: “Please note the update period is not a guarantee as to how long your device will last.” Do not transfer those dates to Roku, Apple or Google TV products.
A security-update end date also is not an app-support end date. Services can change requirements, remove regional versions or suffer outages independently of the operating system. Use the date as one ownership factor alongside current app compatibility, the exact model and the platform’s troubleshooting options.
A practical decision tree
Keep the current device
Keep it when one app fails, updates or reinstall resolve the issue, other apps work, and the player still receives system updates. This is the lowest-cost and least disruptive outcome. Keep a short record of the successful fix so you can repeat it if the app fails again.
Recommended Free Tools
Try a different network before replacing hardware
Use a temporary hotspot or another access point for a short test. If the app works there, investigate Wi-Fi placement, interference, router configuration or the provider. Buying a faster streamer will not repair a failing connection. Return the device to the normal network afterward and verify whether the issue follows the network.
Buy an external player
Buy one when the built-in platform remains unstable across apps after documented fixes, lacks a required service, or no longer receives necessary updates. Select the platform that supports your services in your region; do not select it on an assumed crash-rate advantage. Budget for the player itself and any required subscriptions, but do not treat a higher purchase price as evidence of better crash resistance.

Replace the television only for television-level faults
A new TV is justified by display, power or hardware problems, not simply by an app crash that an external player can isolate. A separate player is usually the more targeted test when the screen and inputs work normally.
Setup checklist for a new player
- Install the latest system update before downloading all your apps.
- Connect to the intended network and run its connection test.
- Install one or two essential apps first and test launch, sign-in and playback.
- Add remaining apps in small groups; this makes a newly introduced problem easier to identify.
- Keep free storage available for app and system updates.
- Save the exact model number, software version and support page for future troubleshooting.
- Test the service that originally crashed on the old platform before migrating every account.
- Keep passwords and two-factor authentication available, since reinstalls and new devices commonly require a fresh sign-in.
Common mistakes that prolong crashes
- Factory-resetting immediately: it erases settings and accounts without proving that the cause is local.
- Testing only one title: a single broken stream can be a service-side issue.
- Assuming a new device fixes an outage: if the provider is down, every compatible player can fail.
- Ignoring storage warnings: low space can prevent an app from launching or updating.
- Confusing security support with app support: a published update date does not promise compatibility with every future app.
- Using a regional support page as a universal menu: Fire TV instructions cited here are from the UK and may differ elsewhere.
- Changing network, app and hardware at once: you lose the evidence needed to identify the actual cause.
- Restoring every app immediately: add apps in groups so a newly introduced crash is easier to trace.
- Assuming storage capacity proves reliability: no evidence here shows that a larger-capacity or higher-priced player crashes less often.
Frequently asked questions
Will buying a new streaming device stop apps from crashing?
Not necessarily. Official Roku, Google TV and Amazon guidance lists app, software, storage and connectivity causes. A new player can bypass an outdated television platform, but it cannot fix an account issue, provider outage or weak network.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I replace the device if only Netflix or another single app crashes?
Usually troubleshoot that app first: update it, restart, force-stop where available, clear data or reinstall, and contact the app developer if the platform’s documented steps fail. If unrelated apps work, a full hardware replacement is not the first conclusion.
What does “Insufficient memory” mean on Roku?
Roku identifies low storage as one possible cause and recommends restarting and removing apps to free space. Connectivity can also contribute to app-opening errors, so check both storage and the network.
Does clearing Fire TV data delete my subscription?
Clearing app data removes local app information and normally signs you out; it does not itself cancel a service subscription. Have your credentials ready and confirm account status with the service if sign-in fails afterward.
Is Apple TV 4K guaranteed to have fewer crashes?
No comparative crash-rate evidence is established here. Apple’s page confirms many major apps and thousands of additional App Store apps, so choose Apple TV 4K for service availability and ecosystem fit rather than a guaranteed reliability advantage.
Are Amazon’s 2030 dates a promise that a Fire TV Stick will last until then?
No. They are model-specific security-update dates. Amazon explicitly says the update period is not a guarantee of device lifespan, and the dates do not guarantee every app will remain compatible.

Should I buy a router or other networking equipment instead?
Only when testing implicates the network. Roku notes weak Wi-Fi or an internet-provider problem can prevent an app from opening. Diagnose with another access point or device first, then choose networking equipment appropriate to the confirmed issue.
What information should I give support?
Provide the exact model, software and app versions, country, error wording, when the crash occurs, whether other apps work, storage status, network-test result and the troubleshooting steps already completed. This prevents repeating generic fixes and helps determine whether the app developer or platform manufacturer owns the problem.
Bottom line
There is no evidence-backed “crash-proof” streaming device. Diagnose whether the failure is one app, the platform, storage or the network; apply the documented fix for that platform; then buy an external player only to gain a compatible, better-supported ecosystem. Apple TV 4K, Roku Ultra and Fire TV Stick models are reasonable candidates for different platform preferences, but compatibility and exact-model support matter more than an unproven reliability ranking.
