The fastest reliable Stray setup is the one you can repeat under pressure: a familiar control layout, deliberate camera handling, legal custom bindings, and stable frame pacing. On PC, start with the published keyboard mapping, keep resolution at 100%, disable V-Sync and motion blur, and use the highest quality preset that never produces stutter. A controller is equally legitimate when its layout lets you move, turn, jump, and interact without changing your grip.

Recommended speedrun setup at a glance

There is no authoritative universal sensitivity value, controller model, or graphics preset that makes every runner faster. The practical target is consistency. A theoretically optimal binding is useless if it causes missed jumps, delayed interactions, or accidental camera turns during a route.

Area Starting point Why it works
Keyboard WASD movement; Left Shift run; Space jump; Q interact; Left Alt meow; Tab menu These are the published PC defaults and keep movement, running, jumping, and interaction available without reaching across the keyboard.
Mouse Use the assigned buttons for Defluxor, first-person view, and camera recentering Separate mouse actions leave the left hand focused on movement and route timing.
Controller Movement and camera on separate sticks; run on a holdable trigger or bumper; jump and interact on reachable face buttons This is an ergonomic recommendation rather than a record-setting configuration. It preserves camera control while running.
Graphics Resolution scale 100%; frame rate uncapped; V-Sync, motion blur, and sharpness off; Effects, Shadows, Textures, and Mesh High This is the baseline published by PCGamesN on July 29, 2022. Reduce quality only when your hardware cannot maintain consistent frame times.
Rules Custom keybinds and permitted controller-configuration features only Speedrun.com allows custom bindings, including Steam controller configuration and PlayStation accessibility settings, but requires human inputs and disallows other third-party tools.

Use this as a starting configuration, then test it in ordinary play and in the exact route segments that usually cause mistakes. Change one variable at a time so you know whether an improvement came from the control layout, camera timing, or performance.

Know the legal limits before changing controls

Speedrun.com’s rules notice states: “Custom keybinds are now allowed! This includes using Steam’s controller configuration settings and the Playstation’s accessibility settings.” The same notice says inputs must be human inputs and that other third-party tools are not allowed.

#1 Best Overall
Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Allowed customization

  • Remapping keys in Stray’s Controls menu.
  • Using Steam’s controller-configuration features within the category’s rules.
  • Using the PlayStation accessibility settings specifically covered by the rule notice.
  • Rearranging buttons to suit your hand position, provided every action still comes from a human input.

Do not use automation

  • Macros that issue several inputs from one press.
  • Scripts, turbo functions, or automated mouse and keyboard tools.
  • Tool-assisted-speedrun software or any process that generates inputs for you.

Rules can change, and individual categories can add requirements. Read the current rules for the category and platform you intend to submit before locking in a setup. A fast but illegal configuration is not a valid speedrun configuration.

Keyboard controls that remain dependable under pressure

The published keyboard reference lists the following defaults:

Action Default key Speedrun consideration
Move W, A, S, D Keep these together so directional changes do not require hand repositioning.
Run Left Shift Hold it while retaining access to Space and Q.
Jump Space Use a key you can press while holding movement and run.
Interact Q Keep it close enough for repeated puzzle and object interactions.
Meow Left Alt Leave it reachable without confusing it with movement or jump.
Menu Tab Keep it distinct from route inputs to avoid opening the menu accidentally.
Defluxor, first-person view, camera recenter Mouse buttons Use the assigned buttons without taking the movement hand off WASD.

When to remap

Remap only when the default arrangement creates a repeatable problem: a missed jump because you cannot hold run, an interaction that forces an awkward reach, or a camera action that interrupts movement. Make a single change, then play a normal section and a practiced route segment. If the new key feels faster in one room but causes hesitation elsewhere, keep the old binding. Route familiarity and repeatability matter more than a theoretical reduction in finger travel.

A simple keyboard test

  1. Load a familiar save or opening segment.
  2. Hold a directional key and Left Shift together for several seconds.
  3. While still moving and running, press Space repeatedly, then Q repeatedly.
  4. Use the mouse actions required by your category without releasing movement.
  5. Repeat the sequence after a short break. A layout that works only when you concentrate on your fingers is not ready for attempts.

Controller layout: prioritize grip and camera access

Stray has Full Controller Support on Steam, so a gamepad is a legitimate option. No cited source establishes one controller brand or model as universally fastest. Compare devices by the actions you can perform consistently, not by a claim that one shape guarantees a better time.

Recommended functional arrangement

  • Keep movement on the left stick and camera control on the right stick.
  • Assign run to a trigger or bumper that can be held for long periods without sacrificing right-stick control.
  • Put jump and interact on buttons reachable without changing your grip.
  • Keep camera recentering and any first-person-view action on controls you can identify immediately.

This arrangement is an ergonomic recommendation, not a published record-setting configuration. Some runners prefer a different face-button order or a toggle rather than a hold; the correct choice is the one that produces fewer accidental releases and fewer camera corrections in your route.

Controller versus keyboard

Decision factor Keyboard Controller
Movement input Digital WASD directions Analog stick movement
Camera turns Mouse movement and assigned mouse actions Right-stick movement
Run access Left Shift by default Place on a trigger or bumper you can hold while turning
Remapping Controls menu and permitted platform tools Controls menu, Steam configuration, or permitted accessibility settings
Best fit Runners who prefer discrete directional presses and mouse camera control Runners who prefer an integrated grip and analog camera movement

Do not switch input types immediately before a serious attempt. Learn the new device in ordinary play, then rehearse the route until the same hand positions produce the same actions every time.

Camera technique is a route skill

Camera handling can save or lose more time than a graphics tweak. The Avid Achievers route guide documents several camera-specific situations: lining up the camera during the opening scene while movement is unavailable, moving during a camera transition, walking blind briefly in the Control Room, and shortcuts whose success depends on camera position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pre-aim before control returns

During the opening scene, use the period when movement is unavailable to line up the camera for the next action. The objective is not a dramatic turn; it is to have the view already pointed where your first input needs to go. Practice the timing until you can make the adjustment without guessing when control will return.

Make turns deliberate

Rapid corrective flicks can leave the character facing the wrong direction. Use a deliberate turn, confirm the visual landmark, and then commit to movement. This is especially important before an interaction sequence, a chase, or a narrow corner where a recovery costs more time than a slightly slower initial turn.

Rehearse blind movement

The Control Room includes a short period in which the route guide recommends walking without a dependable view. Learn the input sequence from a fixed landmark or timing cue rather than trying to improvise the camera during the segment. A blind section should feel like a memorized rhythm: movement, turn, interaction, and correction in the same order on every attempt.

Separate camera practice from route practice

  1. Choose one camera-sensitive section, such as an opening alignment, a transition, or the Control Room blind segment.
  2. Repeat only the camera movement until the view ends in the correct orientation.
  3. Add the character movement while keeping the same camera timing.
  4. Add interactions and the following route section.
  5. Move on only when the sequence succeeds repeatedly without conscious correction.

This isolates camera errors instead of hiding them inside a full-run reset.

Setting Baseline Adjustment rule
Resolution scale 100% Lower it only when the native workload causes unstable frame pacing or missed inputs.
Maximum frame rate Uncapped Keep it uncapped as the published baseline; if your platform offers a reliable cap that removes pacing spikes, test it separately and keep the more consistent result.
V-Sync Off Use the baseline unless your own display setup requires a different choice; judge by input consistency and pacing.
Motion blur Off Removes an image effect that can make fast camera movement harder to read.
Sharpness Off Leave off in the baseline and enable only if you have a specific visual reason after testing.
Effects High Lower on older GPUs or handhelds when frame-time spikes occur.
Shadows High Lower before sacrificing control responsiveness if shadows are a major workload on your hardware.
Textures High Lower when memory pressure or stutter appears, particularly on older GPUs and handhelds.
Mesh High Lower when geometry detail contributes to unstable frame times.

The guide specifically notes that lower textures, shadows, effects, and mesh settings can help older GPUs and handhelds, while higher resolutions and quality settings increase load. The correct speedrun setting is the highest level that remains stable through the entire route, not the highest level that produces the largest peak-FPS number.

Why frame pacing matters more than peak FPS

A brief stutter can arrive during a jump, camera transition, or interaction prompt. Even if an overlay reports a high average frame rate, that hitch can delay a visual cue or cause an input to land late. Judge a setup by repeated route runs: watch for pauses, uneven camera motion, delayed prompts, and input misses in the same locations. If those symptoms appear, lower resolution scale first, then reduce the quality options that place the greatest load on your hardware.

Hardware requirements and what they do not promise

Steam lists these Windows requirements for Stray:

Requirement Minimum Recommended
Operating system 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit Windows 10 class
Processor Intel Core i5-2300 or AMD FX-6350 Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600
Memory 8 GB RAM 8 GB RAM
Graphics GTX 650 Ti 2 GB or Radeon R7 360 2 GB GTX 780 3 GB or Radeon R9 290X 4 GB
DirectX DirectX 12 DirectX 12 class
Storage 10 GB 10 GB

These are compatibility targets published by Valve/Steam, not guarantees of speedrun performance, a particular frame rate, or stable frame times. A system that meets the minimum can still require lower resolution or quality settings. A system that meets the recommended specification still needs route testing because individual scenes can stress the hardware differently.

Route priorities before graphics tweaking

The Avid Achievers guide emphasizes small movement and camera optimizations that compound over a run:

  • Use the right-middle-left cat interaction order in the opening.
  • Cut pipe and scaffolding corners rather than taking wide turns.
  • Choose direct routes through chases.
  • Begin movement early during camera transitions when the route permits it.
  • Memorize interaction order in puzzles instead of searching for the next object.
  • Prefer a safe movement line when a risky shortcut causes frequent deaths; a death can cost more time than the shortcut saves.

These are route skills, not settings to toggle. Practice them with your final control layout and graphics baseline so that muscle memory reflects the configuration you will actually use.

A repeatable setup and testing workflow

  1. Choose the platform and category. Confirm whether you are running on PC, Steam Deck, PlayStation, or Xbox and read the current category rules.
  2. Record the starting configuration. Write down the keyboard or controller bindings and each graphics option before making changes.
  3. Apply the legal control layout. Start with the published keyboard defaults or the controller arrangement that keeps movement, camera, run, jump, and interact available together.
  4. Run a comfort test. Play ordinary sections for several minutes, including movement, camera turns, jumps, and repeated interactions.
  5. Run a route test. Practice the opening, a camera transition, the Control Room blind segment, a chase, and a puzzle interaction sequence.
  6. Check frame pacing. Repeat the same sections while looking for stutter, delayed prompts, or uneven camera motion rather than focusing only on average FPS.
  7. Change one setting. If performance is unstable, lower resolution scale or one quality group, then repeat the exact test.
  8. Freeze the setup. Once the controls and performance are reliable, stop changing them while learning route timing.

Common problems and fixes

I keep missing jumps after remapping

Restore the previous binding and test whether the problem is reach, timing, or an accidental release of run. If a new key is still preferable, practice the jump while holding movement and run until the sequence works without looking at your hands.

The camera is correct in practice but wrong in runs

You may be reacting to visual movement instead of using a timing cue. Rehearse the camera turn from a fixed landmark, then add the preceding interaction and following movement. For blind sections, memorize the entire input sequence rather than attempting to recover the view mid-segment.

The game feels smooth until a chase or transition

Those sections may expose frame-time spikes that do not appear in a quiet room. Repeat the exact section several times, then lower resolution scale or the quality options that are stressing your hardware. Keep the change only if it removes the hitch without creating a new visual or input problem.

A controller feels comfortable but slower

Check whether run forces you to release the right stick, whether jump or interact requires a grip change, and whether camera recentering is easy to trigger accidentally. Move run to a trigger or bumper and retest before abandoning the controller. If the same camera correction remains necessary, compare the sequence on keyboard and choose the input method with fewer recoveries.

My configuration may violate the rules

Remove macros, scripts, turbo functions, and other automation. Keep only in-game remaps, permitted Steam controller configuration, and the PlayStation accessibility settings explicitly allowed by the current notice. When in doubt, ask the category moderators before submitting a run.

How to compare setups fairly

When deciding between two keyboards, controllers, or graphics profiles, compare the same route sections under the same conditions. Use these five axes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Input consistency and comfort: Can you repeat the required holds and presses without hand strain or grip changes?
  2. Camera-turn precision: Do turns end on the intended landmark, including transitions and blind movement?
  3. Rule compliance: Are every binding and platform feature permitted for the category?
  4. Frame-time stability: Does the route remain smooth at the moments where inputs matter, not merely in an empty area?
  5. Portability: Can you reproduce the setup on the PC, Steam Deck, PlayStation, or Xbox category you plan to run?

Keep a short log of misses and their causes. If most failures are camera overshoots, change practice rather than graphics. If they coincide with visible stutter, change performance settings. If they happen when holding several actions, revisit the control layout. This prevents random tweaking from replacing targeted practice.

Final checklist before a serious attempt

  • Controls are documented and legal for the category.
  • Movement, run, jump, and interact are simultaneously reachable.
  • Camera alignment for the opening and camera-sensitive shortcuts is rehearsed.
  • Blind movement in the Control Room is memorized.
  • Resolution scale, frame rate, V-Sync, motion blur, sharpness, and quality levels have been tested in route-critical sections.
  • The system meets Steam’s compatibility requirements for the platform edition being used.
  • The route prioritizes safe, repeatable movement where a death would erase the time saved by a risky shortcut.
  • No macro, automation, or other prohibited third-party input tool is active.
